Abstract

The way in which reviewers and essayists configure relationships between the biographer and the reader and the uses of epistolary evidence and the narrative that frames it are discussed. The use of the letter and narrative in periodical reviews and advice to biographers and readers of biography about how they should be considered has indicated how these negotiations display the importance of the periodical press in adding a further context to the sources and resources for a study of life writing.
