Estimates, based on various cladistic methods, of the evolutionary relationship between the species of Haemanthus and Scadoxus are presented. The different methods are compared and discussed. On the data available the compatibility analysis gave a result easier to explain biologically compared to the parsimony analysis. In Haemanthus the results are ambiguous and more data needed. In Scadoxus the following sub–generic division is supported: Two subgenera, Scadoxus and Demeusea, the first with two sections, Scadoxus and Gyaxis, the second with three, Demeusea, Gamolepis and Choananthus.
