The article presents a biographical account of seventeenth-century devotional writer Susanna Hopton (1627-1709). Hopton is now chiefly remembered for her association with the manuscripts of author Thomas Traherne, although ironically during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries her reputation flourished, while Traherne himself was almost forgotten. She was commemorated in a number of compilations of "illustrious and celebrated women" and with equal irony it was not until 1932 that the attribution of some of her works began to be questioned.

The article states that listed as L172 in author Geoffrey Keynes's catalogue of books from Donne's library is a copy of author Carolus Stengelius's "Sacrosancti nominis lesu cultus el miracula," published at Augsburg in 1613. Poet John Donne's signature and his Spanish motto, the latter partly cut away by the binder, appear on the title-page, but unlike many of Donne's other books, it contains no pencil markings in the margin as evidence that Donne had read it. Nor do Donne's writings contain any acknowledgment of Stengelius. Carolus Stengelius (1581-1663) was a Benedictine monk at the monastery of SS Udairicus and Afra in Augsburg.
