The Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) paradox is an exquisite no-go theorem that shows the sharp contradiction between classical theory and quantum mechanics by ruling out any local realistic description of quantum theory. The investigation of GHZ-type paradoxes has been carried out in a variety of systems and led to fruitful discoveries. However, its range of applicability still remains unknown and a unified construction is yet to be discovered. In this work, we present a unified construction of GHZ-type paradoxes for graph states, and show that the existence of GHZ-type paradox is not limited to graph states. The results have important applications in quantum state verification for graph states, entanglement detection, and construction of GHZ-type steering paradox for mixed states. We perform a photonic experiment to test the GHZ-type paradoxes via measuring the success probability of their corresponding perfect Hardy-type paradoxes, and demonstrate the proposed applications. Our work deepens the comprehension of quantum paradoxes in quantum foundations, and may have applications in a broad spectrum of quantum information tasks.

The resource theory of coherence studies the operational value of superpositions in quantum technologies. A key question in this theory concerns the efficiency of manipulation and inter-conversion of the resource. Here we solve this question completely for qubit states by determining the optimal probabilities for mixed state conversions via stochastic incoherent operations. Extending the discussion to distributed scenarios, we introduce and address the task of assisted incoherent state conversion where the process is enhanced by making use of correlations with a second party. Building on these results, we demonstrate experimentally that the optimal state conversion probabilities can be achieved in a linear optics set-up. Quantum entanglement is the key resource for quantum information processing. Device-independent certification of entangled states is a long standing open question, which arouses the concept of self-testing. The central aim of self-testing is to certify the state and measurements of quantum systems without any knowledge of their inner workings, even when the used devices cannot be trusted. Specifically, utilizing Bell’s theorem, one can infer the appearance of certain entangled state when the maximum violation is observed, e.g., to self-test singlet state using CHSH inequality. In this work, by constructing a versatile entanglement source, we experimentally demonstrate a generalized self-testing proposal for various bipartite entangled states up to four dimensions. We show that the high-quality generated states can approach the maximum violations of the utilized Bell inequalities, and thus, their Schmidt coefficients can be precisely inferred by self-testing them into respective target states with near-unity fidelities. Our results indicate the superior completeness and robustness of this method and promote self-testing as a practical tool for developing quantum techniques. Certifying entanglement, and even fully characterizing some quantum states, can be done even with devices that we don’t trust. Chuan-Feng Li and coworkers from University of Science and Technology of China (Hefei) have devised an improved method for quantum “self-testing”, meaning characterizing properties of quantum states (in particular entanglement, the notorious “spooky” quantum correlation) without assuming fully-correct functioning of the measurement apparatus, but based only on the measurements’ violation of mathematical inequalities that can happen only for specific quantum states. Li’s method was also tested experimentally on entangled photons, proving one of its main strengths: robustness with respect to imperfections. Self-testing would allow to strengthen even more the capabilities of quantum techniques for intrinsically-secure communication based on entanglement.

Quantum entanglement is one of the most important resources in quantum information. In recent years, the research of quantum entanglement mainly focused on the increase in the number of entangled qubits or the high-dimensional entanglement of two particles. Compared with qubit states, multipartite high-dimensional entangled states have beneficial properties and are powerful for constructing quantum networks. However, there are few studies on multipartite high-dimensional quantum entanglement due to the difficulty of creating such states. In this paper, we experimentally prepared a multipartite high-dimensional state $|\Psi_{442}\rangle=\frac{1}{2}(|000\rangle+|110\rangle+|221\rangle+|331\rangle)$ by using the path mode of photons. We obtain the fidelity $F=0.854\pm0.007$ of the quantum state, which proves a real multipartite high-dimensional entangled state. Finally, we use this quantum state to demonstrate a layered quantum network in principle. Within the framework of quantum refereed steering games, quantum steerability can be certified without any assumption on the underlying state nor the measurements involved. Such a scheme is termed the measurement-device-independent (MDI) scenario. Here we introduce a measure of steerability in an MDI scenario, i.e., the result merely depends on the observed statistics and the quantum inputs. We prove that such a measure satisfies the convex steering monotone. Moreover, it is robust against not only measurement biases but also losses. We also experimentally estimate the amount of the measure with an entangled photon source. As two by-products, our experimental results provide lower bounds on an entanglement measure of the underlying state and an incompatible measure of the involved measurement. Quantum thermodynamics aims at investigating both the emergence and the limits of the laws of thermodynamics from a quantum mechanical microscopic approach. In this scenario, thermodynamic processes with no heat exchange, namely, adiabatic transformations, can be implemented through quantum evolutions in closed systems, even though the notion of a closed system is always an idealization and approximation. Here, we begin by theoretically discussing thermodynamic adiabatic processes in open quantum systems, which evolve non-unitarily under decoherence due to its interaction with its surrounding environment. From a general approach for adiabatic non-unitary evolution, we establish heat and work in terms of the underlying Liouville superoperator governing the quantum dynamics. As a consequence, we derive the conditions that an adiabatic open-system quantum dynamics implies in the absence of heat exchange, providing a connection between quantum and thermal adiabaticity. Moreover, we determine families of decohering systems exhibiting the same maximal heat exchange, which imply in classes of thermodynamic adiabaticity in open systems. We then approach the problem experimentally using a hyperfine energy-level quantum bit of an Ytterbium $^{171}$Yb$^+$ trapped ion, which provides a work substance for thermodynamic processes, allowing for the analysis of heat and internal energy throughout a controllable engineered dynamics., 14 pages and 7 figures

The certification of entanglement dimensionality is of great importance in characterizing quantum systems. Recently, it is pointed out that quantum correlation of high-dimensional states can be simulated with a sequence of lower-dimensional states. Such problem may render existing characterization protocols unreliable---the observed entanglement may not be a truly high-dimensional one. Here, we introduce the notion of irreducible entanglement to capture its dimensionality that is indecomposable in terms of a sequence of lower-dimensional entangled systems. We prove this new feature can be detected in a measurement-device-independent manner with an entanglement witness protocol. To demonstrate the practicability of this technique, we experimentally apply it on a 3-dimensional bipartite state and the result certifies the existence of irreducible (at least) 3-dimensional entanglement., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, comments are welcome

The recently established resource theory of quantum coherence allows for a quantitative understanding of the superposition principle, with applications reaching from quantum computing to quantum biology. While different quantifiers of coherence have been proposed in the literature, their efficient estimation in today's experiments remains a challenge. Here, we introduce a collective measurement scheme for estimating the amount of coherence in quantum states, which requires entangled measurements on two copies of the state. As we show by numerical simulations, our scheme outperforms other estimation methods based on tomography or adaptive measurements, leading to a higher precision in a large parameter range for estimating established coherence quantifiers of qubit and qutrit states. Recently, vacancy-related spin defects in silicon carbide (SiC) have been demonstrated to be potentially suitable for versatile quantum interface building and scalable quantum network construction. Significant efforts have been undertaken to identify spin systems in SiC and to extend their quantum capabilities using large-scale growth and advanced nanofabrication methods. Here we demonstrated a type of spin defect in the 4H polytype of SiC generated via hydrogen ion implantation with high-temperature post-annealing, which is different from any known defects. These spin defects can be optically addressed and coherently controlled even at room temperature, and their fluorescence spectrum and optically detected magnetic resonance spectra are different from those of any previously discovered defects. Moreover, the generation of these defects can be well controlled by optimizing the annealing temperature after implantation. These defects demonstrate high thermal stability with coherently controlled electron spins, facilitating their application in quantum sensing and masers under harsh conditions., 15 pages, 4 figures

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering describes a quantum nonlocal phenomenon in which one party can nonlocally affect the other's state through local measurements. It reveals an additional concept of quantum nonlocality, which stands between quantum entanglement and Bell nonlocality. Recently, a quantum information task named as subchannel discrimination (SD) provides a necessary and sufficient characterization of EPR steering. The success probability of SD using steerable states is higher than using any unsteerable states, even when they are entangled. However, the detailed construction of such subchannels and the experimental realization of the corresponding task are still technologically challenging. In this work, we designed a feasible collection of subchannels for a quantum channel and experimentally demonstrated the corresponding SD task where the probabilities of correct discrimination are clearly enhanced by exploiting steerable states. Adaptive techniques have great potential for wide application in enhancing the precision of quantum parameter estimation. We present an adaptive quantum state tomography protocol for finite dimensional quantum systems and experimentally implement the adaptive tomography protocol on two-qubit systems. In this adaptive quantum state tomography protocol, an adaptive measurement strategy and a recursive linear regression estimation algorithm are performed. Numerical results show that our adaptive quantum state tomography protocol can outperform tomography protocols using mutually unbiased bases and the two-stage mutually unbiased bases adaptive strategy, even with the simplest product measurements. When nonlocal measurements are available, our adaptive quantum state tomography can beat the Gill–Massar bound for a wide range of quantum states with a modest number of copies. We use only the simplest product measurements to implement two-qubit tomography experiments. In the experiments, we use error-compensation techniques to tackle systematic error due to misalignments and imperfection of wave plates, and achieve about a 100-fold reduction of the systematic error. The experimental results demonstrate that the improvement of adaptive quantum state tomography over nonadaptive tomography is significant for states with a high level of purity. Our results also show that this adaptive tomography method is particularly effective for the reconstruction of maximally entangled states, which are important resources in quantum information.

Quantum entanglement, resulting in correlations between subsystems that are stronger than any possible classical correlation, is one of the mysteries of quantum mechanics. Entanglement cannot be increased by any local operation, and for a sufficiently large many-body quantum system there exist infinitely many different entanglement classes, i.e., states that are not related by stochastic local operations and classical communications. On the other hand, the method of entanglement polytopes results in finitely many coarse-grained types of entanglement that can be detected by only measuring single-particle spectra. We find, however, that with high probability the local spectra lie in more than one polytope, hence providing only partial information about the entanglement type. To overcome this problem, we propose to additionally use so-called local filters, which are non-unitary local operations. We experimentally demonstrate the detection of entanglement polytopes in a four-qubit system. Using local filters we can distinguish the entanglement type of states with the same single particle spectra, but which belong to different polytopes. An experiment-friendly method has been proposed to detect the entanglement type of multi-particle states. The way of characterizing entanglement types is a central question in studying entanglement. Entanglement polytopes serve as an elegant method to solve this issue by using the information of single particles alone, namely their local spectra. However, classifying states via entanglement polytopes is limited due to the large overlap of different polytopes. Here an international group of scientists proposed to use SLOCC (stochastic local operation and classical communication operations to overcome this difficulty. They experimentally detected the entanglement polytopes for two four-qubit states having the same local spectra by using SLOCC operations to move them to a non-overlapping region. Their method sheds light on experimental detection of entanglement in a general way.
