This paper presents a survey of the experiments on runaway electrons (RE) carried out recently in frames of EUROFusion Consortium in different tokamaks: COMPASS, ASDEX-Upgrade, TCV and JET. Massive gas injection (MGI) has been used in different scenarios for RE generation in small and medium-sized tokamaks to elaborate the most efficient and reliable ones for future RE experiments. New data on RE generated at disruptions in COMPASS and ASDEX-Upgrade was collected and added to the JET database. Different accessible parameters of disruptions, such as current quench rate, conversion rate of plasma current into runaways, etc have been analysed for each tokamak and compared to JET data. It was shown, that tokamaks with larger geometrical sizes provide the wider limits for spatial and temporal variation of plasma parameters during disruptions, thus extending the parameter space for RE generation. The second part of experiments was dedicated to study of RE generation in stationary discharges in COMPASS, TCV and JET. Injection of Ne/Ar have been used to mock-up the JET MGI runaway suppression experiments. Secondary RE avalanching was identified and quantified for the first time in the TCV tokamak in RE generating discharges after massive Ne injection. Simulations of the primary RE generation and secondary avalanching dynamics in stationary discharges has demonstrated that RE current fraction created via avalanching could achieve up to 70–75% of the total plasma current in TCV. Relaxations which are reminiscent the phenomena associated to the kinetic instability driven by RE have been detected in RE discharges in TCV. Macroscopic parameters of RE dominating discharges in TCV before and after onset of the instability fit well to the empirical instability criterion, which was established in the early tokamaks and examined by results of recent numerical simulations. This work has been carried out within the framework of the EUROFusion Consortium and has received funding from the EURATOM research and training programme 2014–2018 under grant agreement No 633053. IST activities also received financial support from "Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia" through project UID/FIS/50010/2013. A.E. Shevelev and E.M. Khilkevitch are grateful for financial support from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation (Agreement No.14.619.21.0001, 15.08.2014, id RFMEFI61914X0001). The experiments on COMPASS were supported by the MEYS CR project No. LM2015045. The views and opinions expressed herein do not necessarily reflect those of the European Commission. Publicado

In this paper, the results of resistive wall mode (RWM) control experiments using several sets of active coils are presented. The control effectiveness as a function of coil number and covered torus surface is studied in the RFX-mod device, thanks to the powerful and flexible MHD active control system. Active control is tried using similar coil number and size both in the reversed field pinch (RFP) and in the tokamak configurations, giving a good experimental set to exploit the differences between the two cases. The experimental results are compared with predictions by a new integrated simulator for closed loop RWM growth. The numerical tool couples, in a self-consistent way, a full 3D finite element description of the machine boundaries, a 2D toroidal model of RFP plasma stability and a model of the RFX-mod control system, producing an overall dynamic model cast in the state variable space. In this way a full dynamic flight simulator of RWM control experiments is implemented, where coil coverage and experimental proportional-integral-derivative gains are explored in simulations. Both in the performed experiments and in simulations wall mode active control is proven to be possible in both the configurations with a very reduced set of active control coils. The non-resonant magnetic braking effect induced by a non-axisymmetric magnetic perturbation is investigated on JET and TEXTOR. The collisionality dependence of the torque induced by the n = 1, where n is the toroidal mode number, magnetic perturbation generated by the error field correction coils on JET is observed. The observed torque is located mainly in the plasma core (normalized radius ? < 0.4) and increases with decreasing collisionality. The neoclassical toroidal plasma viscosity (NTV) torque in the collisionless regime is modelled using the numerical solution of the bounce-averaged drift kinetic equation. The calculated collisionality dependence of the NTV torque is in good agreement with the experimental observation on JET. The reason for this collisionality dependence is that the torque in the plasma core on JET mainly comes from the flux of the trapped electrons, which are still mainly in the 1/? regime. The strongest NTV torque on JET is also located near the plasma core. The magnitude of the NTV torque strongly depends on the plasma response, which is also discussed in this paper. There is no obvious braking effect with n = 2 magnetic perturbation generated by the dynamic ergodic divertor on TEXTOR, which is consistent with the NTV modelling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The kinetic effects of thermal particles on the resistive wall mode (RWM) are studied in reversed field pinch (RFP) by adopting the toroidal hybrid stability code MARS-K (Liu et al 2008 Phys. Plasmas 15 112503) where the drift kinetic effects are included self-consistently. It is found that the transit ion resonance can provide ion acoustic Landau damping to stabilize the RWMs in high-beta plasmas. The trapped particles do not play a significant role in kinetic stabilization. The required critical flow rotation frequency is in the ion acoustic range which is much smaller than that predicted previously by fluid theory (Guo et al 1999 Phys. Plasmas 6 3868). The most unstable mode, having its rational surface closest to the plasma, can be stabilized for the wall near the plasma (e.g. n = 6 mode in RFX-mod) with the flow rotation in a few per cent of the Alfvén frequency. For other RWMs with different toroidal wave numbers n the stabilization conditions depend on the wall position and plasma β
p . An analysis based on the potential energy components is carried out for physical understanding. The preliminary study on the effects of collisionality is also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

A new integrated simulator for experiments of resistive wall mode (RWM) closed-loop control and its benchmark against experimental data are presented. The numerical tool couples in a self-consistent way a full 3D finite element description of the machine boundaries (Cariddi code), a 2D toroidal model of RFP plasma stability (MARS-F code) and a realistic representation of the RFX-mod control system producing an overall dynamic model cast in the state variable space. In this way a full dynamic 'flight simulator' of RWM control experiments has been implemented where the interaction of proportional-integral-derivative controller gains and plasma equilibrium parameters can be explored. As an application of the new integrated tool, closed-loop RWM stability analyses have been benchmarked against experimental data. In this way it was possible to experimentally prove that the control simulator correctly reproduces closed-loop RWM growth rates under different control conditions. Time domain simulations were also run to assess the overall accuracy of the model including the presence of non-linear blocks. The achieved results are discussed in connection with the broader international effort towards an effective control of RWMs in both tokamak and RFP configurations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we analyse the effects of three-dimensional ITER conducting structures on resistive wall modes (RWMs) growth rates. In particular, a highly detailed description of the thick ITER blanket modules (BMs) is given, with a volumetric mesh including slits, holes, pockets and an anisotropic resistivity to take into account cooling channels. Also other important details of the vacuum vessel are included, such as the outer triangular support, copper cladding, port extensions. To deal with the resulting huge computational model, a fast/parallel implementation of the CarMa code has been successfully developed and used. Both n = 1 (kink-like instability) and n = 0 (axisymmetric vertical instability) RWM are considered. The computational model is validated, on 2D test cases, by the consistency of fits to the growth rate with no-wall and ideal-wall limits calculated with MARS-F. Considering the full 3D model, the detrimental effect of ports on n = 1 growth rates is essentially counteracted by the beneficial effect of BMs.
