Abstract

Exclusive heavy quarkonium photoproduction is one of the most popular processes in EIC, which has a large cross section and a simple final state. Due to the gluonic nature of the exchange Pomeron, this process can be related to the gluon distributions in the nucleus. The momentum transfer dependence of this process is sensitive to the interaction sites, which provides a powerful tool to probe the spatial distribution of gluons in the nucleus. Recently the problem of the origin of hadron mass has received lots of attention in determining the anomaly contribution $M_{a}$. The trace anomaly is sensitive to the gluon condensate, and exclusive production of quarkonia such as J/$\psi$ and $\Upsilon$ can serve as a sensitive probe to constrain it. In this paper, we present the performance of the ECCE detector for exclusive J/$\psi$ detection and the capability of this process to investigate the above physics opportunities with ECCE., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures, 1 table

Abstract

A new electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of 140 lead tungstate (PbWO 4 ) scintillating crystals was constructed for the PrimEx- η experiment at Jefferson lab. The calorimeter was integrated into the data acquisition and trigger systems of the GlueX detector and used in the experiment to reconstruct Compton scattering events. The experiment started collecting data in the spring of 2019 and acquired about 30% of the required statistics. The calorimeter is a prototype for two PbWO 4 -based detectors: the Neutral Particle Spectrometer (NPS) and the lead tungstate insert of the Forward CALorimeter (FCAL) of the GlueX detector. The article presents the design and performance of the Compton calorimeter and gives a brief overview of the FCAL and NPS projects.

4. Light yield of Kuraray SCSF-78MJ scintillating fibers for the Gluex barrel calorimeter

Abstract

Over three quarters of a million 1-mm-diameter 4-m-long Kuraray double-clad SCSF-78MJ (blue-green) scintillating fibers have been used in the construction of the GlueX electromagnetic barrel calorimeter for the Hall D experimental program at Jefferson Lab. The quality of a random sample of 4750 of these fibers was evaluated by exciting the fibers at their mid point using a 90Sr source in order to determine the light yield using a calibrated vacuum photomultiplier as the photosensor. A novel methodology was developed to extract the number of photoelectrons detected for measurements where individual photoelectron peaks are not discernible. The average number of photoelectrons from this sample of fibers was 9.17±0.6 at a source distance of 200 cm from the PMT.

Abstract

The relative gain of the photodetectors for the GlueX Barrel and Forward calorimeters will be monitored using modular LED driver systems. The BCAL system consists of a global controller that feeds power, bias voltage and trigger signals to 96 local controllers situated at the ends of the 48 BCAL modules, which drive 40 LEDs associated with the 40 light guides at the end of each module. The FCAL system consists also of a global controller, a local controller for each acrylic quadrant covering the face of the FCAL, and ten 4-LED pulser boards per local controller connected in a star configuration along the edges of the acrylic panes. The respective systems are currently being installed on the detectors and their tested performance is presented herein.

Abstract

Over three quarters of a million, 4-m long Kuraray double-clad SCSF-78MJ (blue–green) scintillating fibres have been used in the construction of the GlueX electromagnetic barrel calorimeter, as part of the Hall D experimental program at Jefferson Lab. The response and quality of a random sample of 4750 of these fibres have been evaluated by employing a 373-nm UV LED to stimulate the fibres along their length and reading out the light using a spectrophotometer and a photodiode in order to extract the spectral response and the attenuation length, respectively. Single exponential fits to the spectral response in the 100–280 cm distance from the light source yielded an average bulk attenuation length and standard deviation of (387±26) cm. Double-exponential fits to the spectral response over the entire 4-m length also allowed the extraction of long and short wavelength components at (486±54) cm and (75±22) cm, respectively. Finally, diameter uniformity measurements were carried out. The quality assurance results confirmed that the fibres were of high quality and complied with GlueX specifications.

Abstract

The spectral response of PHT-0044 (blue) and BCF-20 (green) scintillating fibers was measured as a function of wavelength using a UV LED. It was observed that significant spectral strength from the PHT-0044 fibers was missing compared to manufacturer's specifications at the origin of the source, shifting the peak value of the spectrum to significantly higher values in wavelength. In contrast, the corresponding shift for the BCF-20 fibers was minimal. The mechanisms responsible for the observed behavior are discussed herein. Moreover, the attenuation length for each fiber type was extracted and studied as a function of wavelength. Finally, the measured fiber spectra were convolved with the wavelength response from a typical bi-alkali photomultiplier as well as a green-sensitive silicon photomultiplier and compared.

Abstract

Silicon photomultiplier devices (SiPM) were investigated as a possible front-end detector system for the electromagnetic barrel calorimeter of the GlueX Project at Jefferson Laboratory, USA, and compared against a traditional 2 in vacuum photomultiplier tube. The SiPM has gain and timing resolution comparable to that of a PMT, requires a simple electronic circuit and is not sensitive to magnetic fields. These attributes allow us to conclude that it is feasible to use the SiPM as a front-end detector for this calorimeter.

Abstract

We report the results of an operational test of the efficiency and position sensitivity of a silica-aerogel Cherenkov detector installed in the HRS-E spectrometer in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. The calibration was performed with data from elastic electron scattering from polarized 3 He . The response of the photo-multiplier tubes was linearized with a quadratic correction, allowing a unique number of photo-electrons (PEs) to be extracted. The result obtained (∼7.3 PEs) is consistent with the performance of the prototype detector tested earlier under ideal conditions.

Abstract

The study of photoreactions on light nuclei with the TAGX spectrometer started in 1987 using the 20% duty-cycle tagged-photon beam at the 1.3-GeV Tokyo electron synchrotron. TAGX is comprised of a π-sr magnetic spectrometer for detection of charged pions, kaons, and protons and a 0.85-sr time-of-flight spectrometer for neutrons. It has served in the past eight years as a unique medium-energy-resolution multi-particle spectrometer for coincidence experiments to detect such final states as pn, pp, π + π − , ppn, pp − , and pn π + π − : some of which were kinematically-complete measurements of three-particle and four-particle final states. Details of the detector components, their performance, data acquisition, event reconstruction analyses, and detector-acceptance calculations are described together with the results of experience acquired in those experiments. A TAGX improvement in the momentum resolution required for charged particle measurements in the 1-GeV photon energy region is also reported.

Abstract

A prototype of a silica aerogel Cherenkov detector to be used for pion-proton discrimination in one of the HRS spectrometers of CEBAF Hall A has been built and tested. Each detector housing is made of carbon fiber composites and incorporates planar parabolic mirrors. The prototype was tested in electron and pion beams. The detection efficiency for particles well above the Cherenkov emission threshold has been measured to be greater than 99%, and the false trigger rate was measured to be less than 3 × 10 −2 . The results are consistent with a Monte Carlo simulation of the prototype detector, indicating that the performance of the detector is well understood.
