Abstract

We have measured production cross-sections and longitudinal momentum distributions of fragments from neutron-deficient 36Ar at 1.05A GeV. The production cross-sections show excellent agreement with the predictions of the semiempirical formula EPAX. We have compared these results, involving extremely neutron deficient nuclei, with model calculations to extract information about the response of these models close to the driplines. The longitudinal momentum distributions have also been extracted and are compared with the Goldhaber and Morrissey systematics. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

One-proton removal reactions of 936 MeV/u 8B have been studied with carbon and lead as breakup targets. Using the FRS at GSI, the longitudinal momentum distributions of the 7Be fragments and the one-proton removal cross section of 8B were measured. The relative contributions of the breakup channels leading to 7Be in its ground state and excited state at 429 keV (7Be&ast;) have been determined from measurements of γ rays in coincidence with the fragments from the one-proton removal reaction. The experimental breakup data are discussed in the context of a theoretical (α+3He+p) three-body model. The combined data from the two targets allow a determination of the weight of the 7Be&ast; component in the 8B ground state wave function as (13.3±2.2%) [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Abstract: The very exotic nuclear resonance systems, 10He and 13Li, are produced in proton-knockout reactions from relativistic beams of 11Li and 14Be. The experimentally determined energy and angular correlations between their decay products, and , are analyzed using an expansion of decay amplitudes in a restricted set of hyperspherical harmonics. By considering only a small number of terms it is possible to extract the expansion coefficients directly from the experimental three-body correlations. This provides a model-independent way of getting information about the decay process, on the structure of the decaying nucleus and on the quantum characteristics of the binary subsystems. The results show that the relative-energy spectrum can be interpreted as consisting of two resonances, an ground state and an excited state. The relative-energy spectrum is interpreted as an ground state overlapping with excited states having a structure similar to the state in 10He but spread over several states due to the coupling to the core. The 13Li data also give evidence for a contribution of a configuration where the two neutrons occupy the d-shell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: The unbound nuclei 9He and 10He have been produced in proton-knockout reactions from a 280 MeV/u 11Li beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target at the ALADIN-LAND setup at GSI. Information on their nuclear structure has been obtained from the relative-energy spectra, and , employing reaction models incorporating the structure of 11Li. The relative-energy spectrum is dominated by a strong peak-like structure at low energy, which may be interpreted within the effective-range approximation as the result of an s-wave interaction with a neutron scattering length of . This spectrum also shows evidence for resonance states at and at 2.4 MeV above the threshold. It is argued that the s-state might not be the 9He ground state. For , the analysis of the relative-energy spectrum gives two alternative possibilities for an interpretation: either a narrow resonance at () superimposed on a correlated background, or two overlapping resonances, a ground state at 1.54(11) MeV () together with an excited state at 3.99(26) MeV (). Abstract

The measurement of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance(GMR) in unstable nuclei remains a major experimental challenge due to low radioactive beam intensities and unfavourable conditions in reverse kinematics. At GANIL, we have tested a new experimental method based on the unique capabilities of the active target Maya to probe the GMR by the inelastic scattering reaction 56Ni(d,d'') at 50 AMeV. The preliminary excitation energy spectrum of 56Ni presents a bump between 12 and 25 MeV where isoscalar resonances are expected. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

This paper presents the results of experimental investigations of (p,pn), (p,pα) and (p,p 6He) reactions with relativistic 6He and 8He beams impinging on a hydrogen target. Information on the structure of extremely neutron-rich nuclei was obtained by using the unique characteristic of quasi-free scattering processes and inverse kinematics. For the first time, momentum distributions of complex clusters inside 6He and 8He were measured. Spectroscopic factors for valence neutrons, α- and 6He clusters were deduced from the experimental data. They demonstrate that the filling of the p½ shell is the essential feature of the 8He structure. It is shown that the 8He cluster structure can be considered as a 6He core plus two valence neutrons. Abstract

The recent WMAP results tightly constrain the baryon density in the universe, which in turn constrains the light element abundance predicted in Standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (SBBN). There is a discrepance in the 7Li abundance which cannot be explained by uncertainties in the main reactions included in the SBBN. Up to now, the influence of the reaction 7Be(d,p)2α has been neglected. We have investigated this reaction at SBBN energies using a radioactive 7Be beam and a (CD2) n self-supporting target at the CYCLONE RIB facility at Louvain-la-Neuve. Abstract

Dissociation of a 227 MeV/u 8He beam in a lead target has been studied in a kinematically complete experiment. The results are compared with similar data from the well-known halo nucleus 6He. Coulomb–nuclear interference in the inelastic channel gives evidence for a Iπ=1− resonance in 8He at Ex=4.15 MeV. The deduced B(E1) value of 0.38±0.07 e2fm2 indicates a uniform distribution of the four neutrons around the α-particle core. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
