In this paper, we propose a generalized discrete Lotka-Volterra equation and explore its connections with symmetric orthogonal polynomials, Hankel determinants and convergence acceleration algorithms. Firstly, we extend the fully discrete Lotka-Volterra equation to a generalized one with a sequence of given constants { u 0 (n) } and derive its solution in terms of Hankel determinants. Then, it is shown that the discrete equation of motion is transformed into a discrete Riccati system for a discrete Stieltjes function, hence leading to a complete linearization. Besides, we obtain its Lax pair in terms of symmetric orthogonal polynomials by generalizing the Christoffel transformation for the symmetric orthogonal polynomials. Moreover, a generalization of the famous Wynn's ε-algorithm is also derived via a Miura transformation to the generalized discrete Lotka-Volterra equation. Finally, the numerical effects of this generalized ε-algorithm are discussed by applying to some linearly, logarithmically convergent sequences and some divergent series. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, based on the direct method proposed by Akira Nakamura, we present an efficient numerical scheme to calculate the N-periodic wave solutions to the Tzitzeica equation and the (2 + 1)-dimensional modified Bogoyavlenskii-Schiff (mBS) equation which can be transformed into a coupled bilinear system with some dependent variable transformation. By using this numerical scheme, we calculate their 2-periodic wave solutions and 3-periodic wave solutions as examples. We also show the asymptotic behaviors under a "small amplitude" limit of these quasi-periodic wave solutions numerically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the literature, most known sequence transformations can be written as a ratio of two determinants. But, it is not always this case. One exception is that the sequence transformation proposed by Brezinski, Durbin, and Redivo-Zaglia cannot be expressed as a ratio of two determinants. Motivated by this, we will introduce a new algebraic tool—pfaffians, instead of determinants in the paper. It turns out that Brezinski-Durbin-Redivo-Zaglia’s transformation can be expressed as a ratio of two pfaffians. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to introduce pfaffians in the expressions of sequence transformations. Furthermore, an extended transformation of high order is presented in terms of pfaffians and a new convergence acceleration algorithm for implementing the transformation is constructed. Then, the Lax pair of the recursive algorithm is obtained which implies that the algorithm is integrable. Numerical examples with applications of the algorithm are also presented. Based on the integrable discrete hungry Toda (dhToda) equation, the authors designed an algorithm for computing eigenvalues of a class of totally nonnegative matrices (Ann Mat Pura Appl, doi:). This is named the dhToda algorithm, and can be regarded as an extension of the well-known qd algorithm. The shifted dhToda algorithm has been also designed by introducing the origin shift in order to accelerate the convergence. In this paper, we first propose the differential form of the shifted dhToda algorithm, by referring to that of the qds (dqds) algorithm. The number of subtractions is then reduced and the effect of cancellation in floating point arithmetic is minimized. Next, from the viewpoint of mixed error analysis, we investigate numerical stability of the proposed algorithm in floating point arithmetic. Based on this result, we give a relative perturbation bound for eigenvalues computed by the new algorithm. Thus it is verified that the eigenvalues computed by the proposed algorithm have high relative accuracy. Numerical examples agree with our error analysis for the algorithm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
