Portfolios are used in midwifery education to provide students with a central place to store their accumulative evidence of clinical experience for initial registration in Australia. Portfolio formats can be paper-based or electronic. Anecdotal discussion between midwifery students in Queensland debated the best format to document the requirements for the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) standard 8.11. Midwifery students using paper-based portfolios envisioned that an ePortfolio would be streamline, simple, safe to use, and able to be used anywhere with WIFI, while some students using an ePortfolio expressed a desire to have a paper-based portfolio as a hard copy. This situation called for evidence of a comparison to resolve the debate. This discussion paper highlights the importance of Australian nursing and midwifery students' lack of exposure to electronic medical records during their undergraduate programs. There is pressure on universities offering nursing and midwifery programs to provide students with opportunities to learn to use patient electronic medical records. This will provide authentic rehearsal with the digital technology prior to clinical placements and increase graduate work readiness. Informed by contemporary literature, we describe the benefits of implementing electronic medical records (eMR) in health organisations and identify the challenges and barriers to implementing and integrating the education of electronic records into undergraduate nursing and midwifery programs. Undergraduate students who had not experienced eMR as part of on-campus learning felt unprepared and lacked confidence when commencing clinical practice. Some international nursing and midwifery programs have found that student's skills improve in decision-making and documenting patient observations when eMR is integrated into their university education program. Successful integration of an eMR program should consider academic/teaching staff skills and confidence in technology use, initial and ongoing costs and technical support required to deliver the program. In conclusion, Australian universities need to embed eMR learning experiences into the nursing and midwifery undergraduate curricula to increase students work-readiness with a focus on patient safety. Abstract Registered Nurses (RNs) are regulated health professionals who are educated and accountable for safe medication administration (MA). Binding their practice are standards, policies, procedure and legislation. MA competence is taught and assessed during professional pre-registration education programs. However, different philosophies, theories and models are used by education providers making curriculum content disparate and competency frameworks diverse. Additionally, healthcare contexts are increasingly complex and clinical environments unpredictable. Competency models must respect contemporary practice. This paper focusses on the outcomes of Australian PhD research that combined Appreciative Inquiry (AI) principles with a qualitative study to identify MA safety strategies. In this 2-phase descriptive study, twenty RNs were observed then interviewed about their MA experiences. This paper discusses the interview findings. The participants explained how they assessed patient's needs and implemented strategies to administer medications safely. They presented their actions as being underpinned by a desire to do 'the right thing for the patient' despite their practice going beyond traditional procedural frameworks and not reflecting organisational protocols. Instead, they developed common strategies to enhance safe MA. The participants' described using clinical reasoning and patient-centredness during MA. This study contributes to the knowledge needed for future practice development by highlighting what works. Abstract During a three-year study, 32% (n = 67) in 2015, 16% (n = 44) in 2016 and 55% (n = 161) of students in 2017 expressed an interest in using digital badges to enhance their learning. But who are these students? This paper explores the features of students who are interested in using digital badges as a motivational reward to prepare for weekly face-to-face classes through engaging with online activities and resources. This paper uses a first-year undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing bioscience topic at an Australian university to report nursing students' interests around playing games, their digital badge history during the topic, and their self-reported attitudinal interest in using digital badges to enhance and personalise their learning. Overall, the results indicate that some students chose to enhance their learning potential in class by earning digital badges prior to class. The results of this paper are relevant for nursing educators and educational designers seeking to integrate digital badges into motivational teaching practices, by evaluating the role digital badges play as a motivational game-based learning design element. A student's accuracy on drug calculation tests may be influenced by maths anxiety, which can impede one's ability to understand and complete mathematic problems. It is important for healthcare students to overcome this barrier when calculating drug dosages in order to avoid administering the incorrect dose to a patient when in the clinical setting. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of maths anxiety on healthcare students' ability to accurately calculate drug dosages by performing a scoping review of the existing literature. This review utilised a six-stage methodology using the following databases; CINAHL, Embase, Medline, Scopus, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, Trip database ( http://www.tripdatabase.com/ ) and Grey Literature report ( http://www.greylit.org/ ). After an initial title/abstract review of relevant papers, and then full text review of the remaining papers, six articles were selected for inclusion in this study. Of the six articles included, there were three experimental studies, two quantitative studies and one mixed method study. All studies addressed nursing students and the presence of maths anxiety. No relevant studies from other disciplines were identified in the existing literature. Three studies took place in the U.S, the remainder in Canada, Australia and United Kingdom. Upon analysis of these studies, four factors including maths anxiety were identified as having an influence on a student's drug dosage calculation abilities. Ultimately, the results from this review suggest more research is required in nursing and other relevant healthcare disciplines regarding the effects of maths anxiety on drug dosage calculations. This additional knowledge will be important to further inform development of strategies to decrease the potentially serious effects of errors in drug dosage calculation to patient safety. The aim is to present outcome and engagement data from the initial years of the implementation of a new teaching approach in entry to practice nursing and midwifery education. The Block Model (TBM) is a teaching approach that involves studying one unit of study at a time over a four-week period, as opposed to the traditional semester model. This paper presents data revealing the impact of TBM on student engagement and overall experience in entry to practice Bachelor of Nursing and Midwifery programs. The evaluation retrospectively compared key indicators pre- Block Model implementation with outcomes for nursing and midwifery students using TBM approach using standard data sets and external comparators such as the Student Experience Survey and National Employability Survey. The study presents a comparative analysis of key indicators and graduate outcomes for students. We use reportable data and two external comparators, the Student Experience Survey and the National Employability Survey, to gauge student learning and graduate employability. The evaluation was conducted in a tertiary institution in Australia with for nursing and midwifery students who completed their studies using TBM approach at the university. The implementation of TBM in nursing and midwifery programs resulted in improvements in learner engagement, retention rates and pass rates. Improvements were also noted graduate outcomes, with an increase in full-time graduate employment. The results suggest the Block Model is a promising new teaching approach in nursing and midwifery education, with potential benefits for learner engagement, retention and pass rates. In this ‘Issues for Debate’ paper, the issue is debate. Today's nurses must be able to advocate, lead, and grow ‘big ideas’, as well as knowing their way around a patient's body and mind. This paper reports, partly, on a research study into the use of debate to develop clinical reasoning and thinking skills in nursing students. The study was conducted with first and third-year nursing students enrolled at an Australian regional university. Students were asked to comment on the effectiveness of debate as an educational strategy. We combine the results of this research study with literature and discussion into the educational uses of debate to put the argument that using debate in nursing education can be an effective way to foster the type of creative, intelligent, thoughtful and forward-thinking nurses needed in the modern healthcare system. This paper focuses on the co-creation approach to develop culturally and linguistically appropriate educational interventions to promote the uptake of skin-to-skin contact. Skin-to-skin contact is beneficial to mothers and newborns, but it is rarely practised in Saudi Arabia. Co-creation involving service users to develop evidence-based resources about skin-to-skin contact relevant to the target population is an approach increasingly used to improve health outcomes. A three-step method was used to develop the educational intervention including: (1) a systematic scoping review to identify the evidence-based information for education regarding skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby post-birth; (2) Co-creation of the resources using the Knowledge to Action Framework. The resource was developed collaboratively with academic staff from Australia and health care staff from Saudi hospital; and (3) Finalisation of the educational materials through a consensus development conference and Implementation. The systematic scoping review generated useful information about the gaps in knowledge and barriers to skin-to-skin practice. Information was tailored and translated according to the needs of the Saudi population. A variety of educational materials including pamphlets, a PowerPoint presentation and a short video were co-created with the help of the stakeholders. Consensus was reached when 93% (87–100%) of the participants agreed about the mode of delivery and appropriateness of the PowerPoint and 100% agreed on the e-pamphlets and video. The skin-to-skin online educational resource was created by integrating co-creation principles and the Knowledge to Action framework with the aim of developing and customizing a culturally appropriate intervention using the best available evidence. The aim of this discussion paper is to discuss learning theories in midwifery education, as related to the Midwifery Continuity of Care Experience and to propose an original conceptual framework based on Heutagogy. Midwifery education curricula include a number of midwifery practice experiences. One of the requirements is for students to provide Midwifery Continuity of Care. To achieve these experiences, students in Australia are required to provide care to at least ten (10) women through pregnancy, be on call for the woman's birth and provide at least two visits post-birth. Continuity of care experiences appear to have been incorporated without sufficient consideration of the educational purpose of the experience, or how the experiences contribute to the development of the profession. Although we do know midwifery practice embraces woman-centred care as its philosophical underpinning, a learning approach that is congruent with this philosophy needs to be clearly articulated. A discussion paper that compared and contrasted learning theories to align with Midwifery Continuity of Care experiences. A review of the literature on learning theories was conducted before comparing and contrasting the theories to arrive at a conceptual framework focused on learning theory and its application to the Midwifery Continuity of Care Experience. Heutagogy provides a potentially congruent educational learning approach to underpin the continuity of care experiences, in comparison to traditional learning theories of pedagogy and andragogy. With a paucity of research in the application of heutagogy to midwifery education, it's conceptual underpinnings and the possible application to the Continuity of Care Experience, this paper explores the possible theoretical applications of heutagogy to midwifery education. As a learning theory, heutagogy is well - aligned with woman-centred care. Heutagogy provides a theoretical framework suitable to underpin strategies, including the conceptual framework proposed, that may assist in empowering students to participate in their own education by giving them the ability to be self-determined in both their approach to learning and to evaluate their own learning needs. This paper discusses the findings from the observation phase of a more extensive, appreciative inquiry qualitative study exploring registered nurses' experiences of administering medications. The observations aimed to explore the participants' application of the five-rights of medication administration in practice. Twenty registered nurses working in inpatient medical/surgical units at a regional Australian hospital were observed administering medications from the commencement to the completion of their shift. A data collection tool based on the five-rights of medication administration was used. The findings indicated that medication administration was not as routine as the rights framework suggests. Indeed, what was observed rarely reflected all the criteria of the rights framework. Notably, in practice, some of the rights were unable to be observed because the critical thinking that underpins the rights are implicit. However, the participants were observed to implement strategies beyond those described by the rights framework that ensured safe and timely medication administration. In brief, medication administration in contemporary healthcare settings is more complicated than the linear process suggested by the rights framework. So more attention is warranted, to the safe practice strategies of nurses who, to deal with complex clinical contexts. Abstract The Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework has the potential to contribute to online education by addressing the nexus of pedagogy, technology, and learners' needs. However, there has been limited investigation of the application of CoI to Australian online tertiary education, with the awareness of CoI amongst Australian nurse educators being unknown. This paper reports on a project which used an online survey to investigate the level of awareness of the CoI framework and its applicability to the design of online and blended courses in Australian higher education nursing schools. Most respondents ranked the core concepts of the CoI framework as applicable for nursing education, but only 20% of the participants were familiar with the CoI framework before they participated in the survey. While nearly 90% of the participants viewed instructional design and a theoretical framework as essential for building an online course, 70% of respondents indicated that they did not use an explicit theoretical framework to guide the design or the evaluation of their nursing teaching and learning. These results provide the impetus for further investigation of factors influencing the development of online nurse education including the specific consideration of CoI frameworks. This paper aims to understand the factors influencing the adoption of teaching, social and cognitive presence in online nursing education and explain the novice nurse academics journey in adopting these aspects. The quality of the online/blended courses is about the content and a need for suitable pedagogical design, clear instructions and a collaborative environment based on a valid and reliable theoretical framework. A qualitative study involves semi-structured interviews with 11 nurse academics from three Australian Universities and thematic analysis was conducted. The Community of Inquiry framework informed three themes including several factors in each from the interviews: (1) Teaching Presence (TP): the lack of understanding of educational theory use, the inadequate course evaluation and the resources scarcity found to be the factors affecting the adoption of TP in online nursing education; (2) Social Presence: the engagement difficulty and creating a learning community affected the adoption of SP; and (3) Cognitive Presence: the variety in learning styles and formative assessment and discussion forums found to be affecting the adoption of CP. This study paper is unique because it uses the Community of Inquiry framework and Meleis's Transition Theory and provides insight on how to facilitate the transition [from role insufficiencies to role supplementation to role mastery] of nurse academics' journey in adopting teaching, social and cognitive presence for online higher education. Nursing is a social and collaborative profession; therefore, nursing education requires a pedagogy that supports the establishment of a collaborative learning community. Despite the limited use of the Community of Inquiry framework in Australian nursing courses, the educators viewed it as applicable for course design. This paper aims to understand Australian nurse educators' current practices in designing and delivering courses using the Community of Inquiry lens. This paper represent the second phase of the explanatory mixed-methods approach—the data collected in October 2019 via semi-structured interviews with eleven nurse academics from 3 Australian universities. the deductive thematic analysis using the Community of Inquiry coding template confirmed that the 'cognitive presence' and its indicators are implicitly embedded in online/blended courses. But the 'social presence' and 'teaching presence' are faced with some challenges: the underuse of discussion forums by students, the use of social media pages with exclusion of educators and the educators' role of content development rather than course design. The study findings suggest that the Community of Inquiry framework's explicit application would strengthen 'social and teaching' presences in nursing courses design. In contemporary higher education contexts, active learning pedagogy pervades in discourses around designing quality student experiences. Transposing student bodies from passive to active participants in learning experiences is widely considered best practice in curriculum and pedagogical design. While literature on active learning is vast and recommendations on how to transform into an active learning approach abounds, such advice is often prescribed to individual teachers or courses. What remains unknown in this transformational space is how leadership for person-centred teaching can guide a whole school to shift philosophical presuppositions and take-up active learning as the guiding pedagogy. This paper describes the challenges, processes and steps for how one school, the School of Nursing at an Australian University, invoked transformational change through a philosophical and practice-based shift across all learning spaces (online/ face-to-face/ blended, undergraduate and postgraduate domains). Current international research suggests universities providing nursing education should focus on shifting students' attitudes towards valuing clinical learning derived from aged care settings, offering support and education for aged care facility staff supervising nursing students’ learning in the aged care setting, and encouraging nursing graduates to consider pursuing careers in gerontology nursing. Against this international backdrop, one Australian School of Nursing designed a structured clinical learning experience to offer final year nursing students an opportunity to further their knowledge and understanding of the complexities of the role of the gerontology registered nurse. Additionally, this clinical learning experience included provision for nursing academics to offer support and expertise to the aged care facility staff around the role of supervising and assessing final year nursing students’ clinical learning. The aim of this paper is to present fifteen final year nursing students' and nine registered nurse supervisors’ evaluations of the gerontology clinical learning experience and the success of the learning experience towards meeting the project aims. Mostly participants reported positive experiences and agreed the experience illuminated the role of the gerontology registered nurse. The aim of this paper is to report the results of a cross-national study that evaluated a range of simulation sessions using an observation schedule developed from evidence-based quality indicators. Observational data were collected from 17 simulation sessions conducted for undergraduate nursing students at three universities in Australia and the United Kingdom. The observation schedule contained 27 questions that rated simulation quality. Data were collected by direct observation and from video recordings of the simulation sessions. Results indicated that the highest quality scores were for provision of learning objectives prior to the simulation session (90%) and debriefing (72%). Student preparatiosn and orientation (67%) and perceived realism and fidelity (67%) were scored lower than other components of the simulation sessions. With the increasing risk of mass casualty incidents from extreme climate events, global terrorism, pandemics and nuclear incidents, it's important to prepare nurses with skills and knowledge necessary to manage such incidents. There are very few documented accounts of the inclusion of mass casualty education within undergraduate nursing programs. This paper is the first to describe undergraduate mass casualty nursing education in Australia. A final year Bachelor of Nursing undergraduate subject was developed. The subject focused on initial treatment and stabilisation of casualties predominantly within pre-hospital environments, and included a capstone inter-professional mass casualty simulation. Students experience of the subject was evaluated using the Satisfaction with Simulation Experience Scale (Levett-Jones et al., 2011) and a subject evaluation survey. Student satisfaction and evaluations were extremely positive. As a tool for developing clinical skills, 93% (n = 43) agreed that the simulation developed their clinical reasoning and decision making skills. In particular, the simulation enabled students to apply what they had learned (77%, n = 35, strongly agree). Due to the frequency of mass casualty events worldwide, there is a need for educational exposure in undergraduate nursing curricula. This paper outlines a study that was undertaken to investigate the different nurse education service models being utilised in acute care metropolitan hospitals across Australia with a view to make recommendations for future nurse education service delivery within healthcare organisations. This research study used a mixed methods approach comprising three phases. Phase one involved interviews and focus groups with nurse educators at one tertiary teaching hospital in Perth, Western Australia (WA). Phase two involved focus groups and interviews with nurse educators and coordinators of nurse education services in acute care metropolitan hospitals in W.A. Phase three of the study consisted of the development of a survey tool from the findings of the previous phases and a national survey of nurse educators in acute care metropolitan hospitals across Australia. The findings of this study demonstrate that a centralised nurse education service model undertakes more functions than, and delivers significant advantages over, the decentralised and combination models. Expensive simulation equipment continues to sit idle in nursing learning and teaching environments. To identify factors that influence nursing educator comfort in the use of simulation at an Australian university an explorative qualitative research project was undertaken using an interpretative constructivist methodology. The Goodwin et al. (2007) adapted Comfort Theory for nursing education has been used. The aim of the study was to identify factors that influence nurse educator's comfort in the use of simulation. Research question asked was: What are the barriers and enhancers to using simulation as a learning and teaching modality. Thematic analysis of data from focus groups on four different campus sites was undertaken. Four themes identified that affected participants' comfort in this study were: 1) Personal barriers; 2) Human resource barriers; 3) Structural barriers and 4) Suggestions to address barriers. Further understanding of the themes and how they relate to educator comfort with simulation are shared with the reader. The paper also outlines emerging recommendations to improve educator comfort. Preparing a person-centred nursing workforce to work in diverse settings is a global health priority. Nursing students' first placement experience is a key transitional moment that shapes professional understanding and motivation to become a nurse. This paper reports the outcomes of combining flipped and simulated learning to enhance nursing students' understanding of person-centred care, the professional nursing role and preparation for placement. The study design was exploratory, the setting, an undergraduate nursing program in an Australian University. Participants included first year nursing students, academic tutors and clinical facilitators. Data collected via survey, semistructured interviews and focus group discussion were analysed descriptively and thematically. Over 90% of students surveyed considered the unit structure, content and resources prepared them well for placement. Pre-class preparation and simulated tutorial activities facilitated student engagement and knowledge translation. Students, tutors and clinical facilitators valued the person-centred approach. Tutors considered the unit materials and focus enhanced students' professional understanding. Clinical facilitators deemed students well-prepared for placement. These results from multiple perspectives, though limited, support combining the flipped classroom and person-centred simulation in nursing education as a strategy to prepare students for clinical placement, translate person-centred values into practice and promote professional understanding and role socialisation. To summarize the effect of the flipped classroom method (FCM) on student engagement in nursing education and provide the implications for future practice. Technological advancement of learning approaches including flipped classroom has become increasingly popular in nursing education. However, no integrative review has been published that specially explore the behaviour engagement, cognitive engagement and emotional engagement of flipped classroom use in nursing education. Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes and Study (PICOS) strategies were implemented to investigate the literature from published peer-reviewed papers from 2013 to 2021 in CINAHL, MEDLINE and Web of Science. The initial search identified 280 potentially relevant articles. After comprehensively reviewing the initial catchment using several analytical phases, 16 articles were considered for the final review. Most of articles targeted on undergraduate nursing students and were conducted in the USA and Australia. The review primarily identified positive learning outcomes among nursing students in term of student engagement. However, a few studies reported contrasting findings, possibly due to students are still dependent on traditional lecture-based classroom. This review suggests that use of the FCM in nursing education could promote students' behavioral engagement and cognitive engagement but yield a mixed outcome in emotional engagement. This review contributed to our understanding of the effect of the flipped classroom method on student engagement in nursing education, the strategies for promoting student engagement in future flipped classroom practice and recommendation for future research on flipped classroom. Evolving knowledge and professional practice combined with advances in pedagogy and learning technology create challenges for accredited professional programs. Internationally a sparsity of literature exists around curriculum development for professional programs responsive to regulatory and societal drivers. This paper evaluates a participatory curriculum development framework, adapted from the community development sector, to determine its applicability to promote engagement and ownership during the development of a Bachelor of Midwifery curriculum at an Australian University. The structures, processes and resulting curriculum development framework are described. A representative sample of key curriculum development team members were interviewed in relation to their participation. Qualitative analysis of transcribed interviews occurred through inductive, essentialist thematic analysis. Two main themes emerged: (1) ‘it is a transformative journey’ and (2) focused ‘partnership in action’. Results confirmed the participatory curriculum development process provides symbiotic benefits to participants leading to individual and organisational growth and the perception of a shared curriculum. A final operational model using a participatory curriculum development process to guide the development of accredited health programs emerged. The model provides an appropriate structure to create meaningful collaboration with multiple stakeholders to produce a curriculum that is contemporary, underpinned by evidence and reflective of ‘real world’ practice. Approximately three quarters of all major mental disorders begin in adolescence. Finding ways to buffer against stress, access social support and connection and flexibly draw upon a range of coping mechanisms are vital strategies that young people can use to promote mental health and wellbeing and to navigate this turbulent life transition successfully. Within Australia, like other parts of the world such as the UK and the USA, it is a sad reality that when young people do become distressed they are not self-caring or supporting others effectively, and not seeking or receiving appropriate help. In order to respond proactively to this issue, a nurse-initiated mental health promotion program was developed. It is termed, iCARE, which stands for Creating Awareness, Resilience and Enhanced Mental Health. The aim of this paper is to discuss the underpinning educational theory that assists in developing in young people a sense of belonging, empathy, self-care and resilience, and why the strategies chosen to engage young people are likely to be effective. Bullying in health workplaces has a negative impact on nurses, their families, multidisciplinary teams, patient care and the profession. This paper compares the experiences of Australian and UK baccalaureate nursing students in relation to bullying and harassment during clinical placement. A secondary analysis was conducted on two primary cross-sectional studies of bullying experiences of Australian and UK nursing students. Data were collected using the Student Experience of Bullying during Clinical Placement (SEBDCP) questionnaire and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The total sample was 833 Australian and 561 UK students. Australian nursing students experienced a higher rate of bullying (50.1%) than UK students (35.5%). Students identified other nurses as the main perpetrators (Aust 53%, UK 68%), although patients were the main source of physical acts of bullying. Few bullied students chose to report the episode/s. The main reason for non-reporting was fear of being victimised. Sadly, some students felt bullying and harassment was ‘part of the job’. A culture of bullying in nursing persists internationally. Nursing students are vulnerable and can question their future in the ‘caring’ profession of nursing after experiencing and/or witnessing bullying during clinical placement. Nursing students are not always well prepared for the kind of adverse events they may experience in the workplace and yet it seems apparent that future students could benefit from learning about such experiences so that they can be avoided, or their impact minimised. This research aimed to identify nursing students' experiences of adversity, collaborate with students to discern important lessons for future students in their experiences, and make recommendations for other educators on how to use these adversity stories as lessons. Seven Australian nursing students were interviewed using critical incident technique consisting of 7 questions. This paper focuses on the responses to the questions: “Does this story's message have a place in the curriculum?” and “How would you teach this lesson?” Data were analysed using critical discourse analysis. Four recurring discourses emerged including: power relationships are a two-way street; learn from mistakes to prevent mistakes; begin cultural consciousness-raising in first year, first semester; and become critically self-aware. Narratives derived from original stories of adversity may be a valuable source of learning about the realities of the workplace but to benefit fully, educators need to assist students to notice and analyse embedded messages. Many higher education institutions have adopted mentoring programs for students as a means of providing support, improve learning and enhance the student experience. The aim of this project was to improve midwifery students experience by offering a peer mentoring program to commencing students to assist with the transition to university life and the rigours of the midwifery program. This paper reports the evaluation of this specific mentoring program and the ongoing development and implementation of a sustainable program within an Australian University. A survey design was adopted to gather feedback from both mentees to evaluate if the peer mentoring program enhanced the first year midwifery student experience and ascertain how the program could be further developed. Fifty-five students engaged with the peer mentors and completed the questionnaire regarding the mentoring program. Specifically valuable was the positive impact that mentoring had on midwifery student confidence, managing the demands of the program and being motivated to keep going when the program requirements were challenging. Maternal oral health is important yet many pregnant women are unaware of its significance. Midwives are advised to promote oral health during pregnancy and are supported to do this in Australia through the Midwifery Initiated Oral Health training program. However, limited undergraduate education is being provided to midwifery students in this area. The objective of this paper is to describe how an innovative oral health education module for an undergraduate midwifery course in Australia was designed using a multidisciplinary approach. Midwives experienced in curriculum development and key investigators from the Midwifery Initiated Oral Health program designed the module using existing literature. Constructive alignment, blended learning and scaffolding were used in the design process. The draft module was then reviewed by midwifery academics and their feedback incorporated. The final module involves 4 h of teaching and learning and contains three components incorporated into first year course units. Each component is aligned with existing learning outcomes and incorporates blended learning approaches and tutorials/class activities as well as online quizzes and personal reflection. The module details key information (current evidence; basic anatomy/physiology; common oral conditions; and guidelines during pregnancy) that could better prepare students to promote oral health in clinical practice. There is a wealth of research investigating the role of the clinical facilitator and the student experience of clinical education. However, there is a paucity of recent research reviewing the students' perspectives of facilitators' qualities that influence their learning. This paper explores undergraduate nursing students' perceptions of the qualities of a clinical facilitator that enhanced their learning. The study was designed as a cross-sectional survey. A total of 452 third year nursing students at one Australian University were invited to participate. A total of 43 students completed the survey and were analysed; thus, the response rate was 9.7%. Results of the study indicate that nursing students perceive availability, approachability and feedback from the clinical facilitator to be highly influential to their learning in the clinical setting. The relational interdependence of these is discussed. Clinical facilitators have an important role in student learning. The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) has set regulatory standards, that require midwifery students to verify how they have met ANMAC standard 8.11 requirements prior to registration as a midwife. The most common formats for recording achievement of the ANMAC requirements are paper-based or electronic portfolios. Research was conducted to compare student's experiences of completing their university portfolio format. Focus group interviews were held at two south east Queensland universities. This study has found that there is disparity between universities in the level of detail documenting evidence of midwifery experiences. The paper-based portfolio was criticised for not having sufficient space for the students to explain the extent of their experiences, in contrast students completing the ePortfolio felt their reflective entries were excessive. Some students felt the portfolio was not being used to its full potential with suggestions that all experiences that fall within the midwife scope of practice should be recorded as evidence of practice experiences. Students felt the current ANMAC Standard 8.11 requirements limit the range of experiences and are repetitive in requiring up to 100 recordings for some experiences. No nationally agreed format exists of how students are required to document their required ANMAC experiences. • The depth of detail recorded as evidence for ANMAC differs between universities. • No national consistency exists in students' documentation of ANMAC standards. • Student's thoughts on their learning from normal experiences were unexpected. • Cognitive dissonance was experienced by students in this study. Indigenous people are the most disadvantaged population within Australia. The Bachelor of Nursing program at a large university in Western Sydney embedded Indigenous health into the undergraduate teaching program. This paper reviews the negative responses received towards course content on evaluation of the Indigenous health unit and explores the predictors for the negative attitudes towards Indigenous Australians. Two surveys were used (baseline and follow-up) to: 1. Determine the main predictors for negative attitudes towards Indigenous people and; 2. Explore students' perceptions of the educational quality of the Indigenous health unit. The surveys allowed collection of socio-demographic, academic data and included the 18 item ‘Attitude Toward Indigenous Australians’ (ATIA) scale and open-ended responses. Students who were: 1. Overseas born, 2. Enrolment category: International student and; 3. Whose primary source of information about Indigenous Australians were the media and school were significantly more likely to have higher negative attitudes towards Indigenous Australians. Qualitative data revealed some unfavourable comments dismissing the value and educational quality of the content within the Indigenous health unit. Community engagement is paramount to enhancing the student experience. Movement away from media driven ‘hype’ to an educated perspective is necessary to create an accurate portrayal of the Indigenous community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Professional values are integrated into undergraduate nursing curricula and taught in various ways. A significant influence on students' developing values and their definition of a ‘good nurse’ are the nurses they interact with in practice. The aim of this paper is to present the findings from a study that explored the professional values that graduating students viewed as important and how these values were illustrated in the behaviours of the nurses whose clinical practice they admired and wished to emulate. Fourteen students from one Australian university were interviewed on the last day of their final clinical placement. An interpretive qualitative design employing semi-structured interviews framed the study. Data were audio recorded, transcribed and thematically analysed. The participants' descriptions illustrated a range of professional values and behaviours. Four main professional values were identified, these included: being person-centred; kindness and caring; being in control; and commitment to learning. Findings demonstrated that the participants understood the meaning and relevance of professional nursing values, from a theoretical, moral and practical stance. Discussions continue within the midwifery profession around the number of and type of clinical experiences required to ensure competent midwifery graduates. Introduction of the three year Bachelor of Midwifery in Australia, almost two decades ago, was intended to reduce the pressure students were under to complete their academic requirements whilst ensuring students developed midwifery practice that encapsulates the philosophical values of midwifery. Currently, midwifery students are mandated to achieve a minimum number of clinical skills and Continuity of Care Experience (CCE) relationships in order to register upon completion of their degree. To achieve these experiences, universities require students to complete a number of clinical practicum hours. Furthermore students are required to demonstrate competent clinical performance of a number of clinical skills. However, there is no evidence to date that a set number of experiences or hours ensures professional competence in the clinical environment. The aim of this paper is to promote discussion regarding the mandated requirements for allocated clinical practicum hours, specified numbers of clinical-based skills and CCE relationships in the context of learning to be a midwife in Australia. Patient harm from medication error is a significant issue. Individual failures by health professionals including knowledge deficits and poor communication have been identified as increasing the likelihood of medication administration errors. In Australia, the National Strategy for Quality Use of Medicines in 2002 compels health professionals to have the knowledge and skills to use medicines safely and effectively. This paper examines nursing students' perceptions of the effectiveness of a flipped classroom approach to increase understanding of pharmacology principles and the application of this knowledge to medication practice. An internet-based self-completion questionnaire was used in 2013 (n = 26) after the flipped classroom approach was implemented, and pre- (n = 6) and post-flipping (n = 25) in 2014. Students who engaged with digitally recorded lectures (eLectures) prior to face-to-face workshops stated that they had greater understanding of the subject and enhanced critical thinking skills. The replay function of the eLecture was perceived by some students as most beneficial to independent learning. However, for some students, time constraints meant that they relied on eLectures alone, while others preferred traditional teaching methods. The objective of this paper was to evaluate pre-registration nursing students' experiences of a pilot program that placed them in community based non-government organisations for clinical placement as part of a core mental health subject. Clinical placements that adopt a Service Learning model in primary health care environments are valuable to nursing students but are not commonly available in Australia. In order to enhance student exposure to primary health care models and support experiential learning about the social determinants of health, a pilot Service Learning program was designed to provide clinical placements in nongovernment organisations. Qualitative data were collected through one focus group with program participants. The focus group was audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis of transcribed data was undertaken. The overarching theme identified was 'new ways of seeing'. Three sub-themes -- 'learning outside the box', 'confronting the real world' and 'transformative experiences' -- were also identified. The authors have concluded that nursing students in community organisations for clinical practicum facilitated valuable learning and generated professional and personal insight leading to increased understanding of the social determinants of health and increased awareness of mental health nursing in the community. In Australia, like other countries, two levels of nurse are registered for entry to practice. Educational changes for second level nurses in Australia have led to questions regarding roles and career options. This paper reports on interviews with nursing course coordinators to examine educator expectations of roles and career pathways of registered and enrolled nurses. Coordinators of eight degree (registered) and diploma (enrolled) nursing programs were interviewed to determine their opinions on roles and careers that students were prepared for. Transcripts were thematically analysed. Educators reported similar graduate roles, although high acuity care was primarily the role of registered nurses. Career expectations differed with enrolled nurses having limited advancement opportunity, and registered nurses greater career options. Health organisations were unprepared to accommodate increased practice scope of enrolled nurses and limited work practice through policies stipulating who could perform procedures. Organisational health policies need to accommodate increased enrolled nurse skill base. Education of practising nurses is necessary regarding increased scope of enrolled nurse practice to ensure they are used to their full potential. An increased burden of chronic and complex conditions treated in the community and an aging population have exacerbated the primary care workload. Predicted nursing shortages will place further stressors on this workforce. High quality clinical placements may provide a strategic pathway to introduce and recruit new nurses to this speciality. This paper is Part 2 of a two part series reporting the findings of a mixed methods project. Part 1 reported on the qualitative study and Part 2 reports on the quantitative study. Forty-five pre-registration nursing students from a single Australian tertiary institution and 22 primary care Registered Nurse (RN) mentors who supervised student learning completed an online survey. Students largely regarded their primary care placement positively and felt this to be an appropriate learning opportunity. Most RNs were satisfied with mentoring pre-registration nursing students in their setting. Furthermore, the RNs desire to mentor students and the support of general practitioners (GPs) and consumers were seen as key enablers of pre-registration nursing placements. Findings from this study provide a preliminary impression of primary care clinical placements from the perspective of pre-registration nursing students and registered nurse mentors. Further research should examine whether a broader scope of non-traditional health settings such as non-government organisations, charities, pharmacies, welfare and social services can also provide appropriate learning environments for pre-registration nursing students. Nursing students' first clinical placement experience can be a critical turning point -reinforcing professional aspirations for some, and for others, a time of emotional turbulence. There is a paucity of research focusing on students' perceptions and concerns prior to their first placement experience. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore the concerns of first year bachelor of nursing students from one Australian university as they prepared for their first clinical placement. Participants completed an online 'readiness for practice' survey consisting of 22 items. This paper focuses on participants' responses to the one open ended question: 'Please comment on any concerns that you have in relation to being prepared for your first clinical placement'. Summative qualitative content analysis was used for analysis. 144 students (55%) responded to the open ended question. Responses were categorised into six themes including: Not prepared for placement; feeling nervous, anxious and worried; bullying and belonging; practicalities; patient safety and making mistakes; and working outside of my scope of practice. It appears that activities designed to equip students with the capacity to manage the inherent challenges of undertaking a clinical placement may sometimes have a paradoxical effect by increasing students' level of stress and anxiety. This paper explores the values and meaning of the nursing profession utilising a sample of new nursing graduates just entering the workforce. Nursing practice has shifted over the course of the 20th and 21st Centuries, with varied and shifting positions on the values and philosophy that underpin it. Reported here is data from a cohort of Australian and New Zealand nurse graduates (n = 97) who submitted survey responses to the open-ended question "I love nursing and/or midwifery because ..." as part of the web-based Graduate e-Cohort Study (GeS). Data were analysed relying on qualitative content analysis. Five themes emerged from the complete analysis of the responses. These themes were; self and personal development, immediate reward (intrinsic work values); meaning making and greater good, mobilities and momentum (extrinsic work values); and person-centred care (social work value). The findings suggest that while economic, workplace, organisational and professional influences may have influenced nursing work, when asked about what they value in nursing, the traditional values emerge as central. Nursing curricula and nurse educators would do well to promote these values and meanings leading to the education and recruitment of individuals suited to the work of nursing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite attempts, there remains a theory practice gap for undergraduate nursing students transitioning to clinical practice on graduation, especially for specialty areas of clinical practice, such as palliative care, where there are limited opportunities to gain specialty knowledge and skills. As a result, undergraduate nursing students largely feel unprepared for end-of-life care in clinical practice. End-of-life care simulation is gaining momentum for helping prepare students to undertake this important care. However, little is known of whether end-of-life care simulation is a transformative learning strategy that can be transferred to clinical practice. The aim of this paper is to report on undergraduate nursing students transformative learning through end-of-life care simulation. A qualitative research design using narrative inquiry was used with data collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using Clandinin and Connelly's three dimensions of narrative inquiry. Eighteen 3rd year undergraduate nursing students enrolled in a compulsory palliative care unit, at an Australian university participated in an immersive end-of-life care simulation. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using Clandinin and Connelly's three dimensions of narrative inquiry. This study revealed that transformative learning occurred through three disorientating dilemmas of: caring for a dying patient; approaching difficult conversations; and witnessing death for the first time. Knowledge of palliative care and clinical skills were also found to be transferred to clinical practice. This paper sought to investigate the influence of the supernumerary clinical nurse educator role on the newly qualified graduate nurses' professional development and successful transition to competent and confident practitioners in the acute care hospital environment. The novice nurses learning in the inpatient clinical environment is affected by increasing patient acuity, complex conditions and organisational expectations. The supernumerary clinical nurse educator is uniquely positioned to prioritise these nurses' education through protected and available time to support adaption in the workplace culture and retention in the organisation. A convergent mixed methods design was used to investigate the relationship between the supernumerary clinical nurse educator role through the opinions and experiences of the graduate nurse. Data were collected in February - July 2015 from graduate nurses from three hospital sites in a healthcare organisation in Western Australia. The research used online questionnaires (n = 39) and face to face interviews (n = 10). Analysis of quantitative data used descriptive statistics and qualitative data used thematic analysis. Four main themes were identified. These were: acknowledges new and challenging experiences, available to provide constructive responses, sympathises with anxiety and missing in action. The graduate registered nurses perceived that clinical sympathy provided by the clinical nurse educator was essential to their new role of frontline nurses influencing their delivery of quality patient care and as a practical solution to champion the graduate nurses' longevity in the future nursing workforce. This paper sought to investigate the perceptions of final-year nursing students regarding general practice nursing as a new graduate career path. General practice nurses have become increasingly important in providing community-based care, in response to the growing burden of chronic conditions and the ageing population. To sustain this workforce, there is a need to optimise strategies to promote a consistent supply of new graduate nurses. This qualitative descriptive study was undertaken within a sequential explanatory mixed methods project. Data were collected through semi-structured telephone interviews with sixteen final-year nursing students from five Australian universities. Interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. Four main themes were identified, namely; a) general practice is not a priority career path, b) opportunities for skills development and consolidation, c) perceptions of employment conditions, and d) transition support is limited. To meet current workforce needs in areas with increasing demand, nurse educators need to support undergraduate nursing students to explore a wide range of career pathways following graduation. Informed career choices and well-structured educational preparation during undergraduate education may be an effective strategy in building a sustainable future workforce in settings such as general practice. General practice nurses play a key role in addressing the growing needs of the community. Early career academic nurses can struggle to meet the demands of career development due to feelings of being overwhelmed. Studies indicate that programs targeting these challenges are often sporadic and inconsistent, leading to dissatisfaction and missed opportunities.This paper reports on findings evaluating a program designed to build career-resilience in a group of early career academic nurses who, through the provision of a structured program of support, were enabled to succeed and thrive in the academy. This six session program was informed by Knowles' adult learning theory, Mezirow's transformational learning theory and Lord's reliance on critical transactions.This study was undertaken in a large metropolitan university in Sydney, Australia. Participants included nine early career academic nurses. All had been full-time academics from one to six years. A qualitative descriptive design was employed using Braun and Clarke's six stage process for data analyses. Three themes emerged: the program fostered connections, strengthened expertise and clarified directions. This analysis provided deep insights into the value of collegial relationships to galvanise career success. The program's strength was its ability to lessen participants' feelings of isolation and to develop behaviours that enhance career-resilience. • Nurses entering academia sometimes struggle with a lack of support in career development. • Appointing individual mentors can be challenging when there is a shortage of experienced academics. • Programs designed to build resilience can benefit early career academic nurses' professional progress. Studies have described the value of international clinical placements from the student perspective. However, little has been reported on the experiences of clinical facilitators during international clinical placements. This study is part of a larger study that explored shared learning experiences of Australian and Balinese midwifery students and clinical facilitators during a two-week international clinical placement in Bali, Indonesia. This paper reports on the experiences of clinical facilitators from both visiting and host countries in facilitating Australian and Balinese midwifery students whilst on clinical placement in Bali. A qualitative research design using focus group discussion was used to gain insight into the experience of the clinical facilitators. Data was analysed using thematic analysis and three broad themes emerged, those being "new experiences", "differences in midwifery practice" and "revised learning approach". New experiences included learning together and English language challenges. Working together allowed the exploration of midwifery practice differences between countries and an appreciation of the different approaches to teaching and learning practices. Health professionals are required to reflect on practice to evaluate and improve care in rapidly changing health care environments. This study explored the professional development needs of educators facilitating development of reflective capacity in midwifery students using the Bass Model of Holistic Reflection. Thirteen midwifery academics at two Australian universities took part in the study conducted in three phases. Phase 1 identified the learning needs of educators described as 'understanding the building blocks of reflection' ; ' practical application of the model, and 'assessment of reflective capacity'. Phase 2 involved an Intervention including development of a reflective practice tool kit and delivery of a two-day workshop. Phase 3 evaluated the experience of educators using the resources and four themes emerged: 1) ' Educators value a reflective practice toolkit '; 2) ' A toolkit builds confidence and trust in the model through promotion of deep personal reflection' ; 3) ' Effective use of the model is key to achieving consistency in application by educators ; and 4) ' Deeper understanding of the model promotes transformation of practice '. Whilst it is widely accepted that the ability to critique, interpret and integrate research is an integral part of the evidence-based practice of nursing and midwifery, teaching such skills to undergraduate students is equally recognised as challenging. From a student's perspective the theoretical aspects, concepts and language of research design may seem far removed from the imperative of developing skills and gaining clinical experience. Simulation has been widely demonstrated as an effective pedagogical approach to engage students in learning and developing practical skills. The 'hands-on' approach provides a cognitive link between theory and practice that is immediately relevant to the student. Simulation training has also been used in other areas of healthcare such as communication and ethics. However, the use of simulation to demonstrate the theoretical and practical aspects of research design to midwifery and nursing students has not been explored. This paper describes a novel approach to teaching undergraduate students fundamental concepts of randomised controlled trial design through their participation in a simulated research trial. Students experienced aspects such as consent, randomisation, intervention, data collection, analysis and interpretation. Post workshop evaluations suggest that students found the approach engaging, increased their knowledge and understanding of research and evidenced-based practice. • Students may find understanding concepts of research design challenging. • Simulation that provides hands-on experience improves knowledge and critical thinking skills. • Participating in a simulated trial improved students understanding of randomised controlled design concepts. Diversity characteristics such as culture, sexual orientation, and social situation potentially impact the participation of older individuals in healthcare. An awareness of diversity characteristics and their potential to impact on older people's access to health and aged care by professionals through training is important. This paper outlines the development and initial validation of a survey using adapted Delphi methodology and distribution to 195 health and aged care professionals pre- and post-diversity training. An initial pool of 31 items were developed with an expert reference group and reduced to 21 through exploratory factor analysis. A two-factor solution was extracted, measuring skills and attitudes of professionals relative to providing services to older people with diverse characteristics. Internal consistency of the items yielded a Cronbach alpha of 0.78. T-tests conducted on the pre- and post-survey data showed significantly higher scores on the domains of skills and attitudes following the training. Knowledge was not effectively captured using this method, with true-false or free-recall questions being a more appropriate approach. This tool fills a gap in the evaluation literature, providing an important first step to assess outcomes of diversity training in community aged care. Nursing research teaching is seen as central to nurse education and practice, but the impact of exposure to research teaching on students' attitudes towards research remains unclear. The aims of this study were to explore the attitudes towards research of undergraduate nursing students, before and after exposure to research teaching online. A further aim of this study was to better understand students' attitudes towards research, to inform future teaching strategies. This descriptive quasi-experimental study used pre-semester and post-semester data collected by means of an online questionnaire. The Attitudes Towards Nursing Research Scale measured student attitudes via 18 Likert items that assessed four domains: Research Abilities, Usefulness of Research, Personal Interest in Research and Using Research in Clinical Practice. There were no statistically significant changes in the overall Attitude Towards Research Scale. Individual item analysis did show statistically significant changes in two items: Understanding of research terminology increased (p = 0.001), but Intention to conduct research decreased (p = 0.035). This study generated evidence on attitudes of nursing students toward research before and after their exposure to a research subject. Research teaching online may be insufficient to effect a change in student nurses' attitudes towards research. Issue: Research is a foundational topic in undergraduate nursing curricula, but students often find the topic to be challenging to learn, while academics find it challenging to engage students in learning about research.What is Already Known: A validated instrument, Attitudes Towards Research, can be used to ascertain if teaching affects attitudes.What this Paper Adds: Overall attitudes of first year, second semester students did not change after experiencing a semester long introductory research subject. Being 'with woman' is a fundamental concept of midwifery philosophy. Minimal evidence explicates ways this important construct is learned or taught. This paper reflects one part of a larger study and explored midwives' experiences of learning and teaching related to the phenomenon of being 'with woman'. Using a descriptive phenomenological approach, 31 midwives working in a variety of models in Western Australia were interviewed to explore the phenomenon of being 'with woman'. Rich descriptions of how midwives learned and taught others to be 'with woman' were obtained. Descriptive phenomenology is useful in revealing features of the phenomenon through description of lived experiences of purposively sampled participants. Giorgi's method was used to analyse data from the two main interview questions. The themes for learning to be 'with woman' were observing midwives; inspirational leaders; learning from the women; a variety of experiences enhances learning; and, develops over time. The themes for teaching being 'with woman' were, approaches for teaching; teaching is implicit; reliance on observation, comprehension and assimilation. Insights into the learning and teaching of practices supported by professional philosophy offer educators and leaders new knowledge and ways to enhance the transfer of knowledge and skills of being 'with woman'. • Midwives learned to be 'with woman' by observing other midwives, women and leaders. • The ways in which midwives learned to be 'with woman' influenced their teaching. • Teaching was implicit and rarely intentionally taught. • Reliance on observation, comprehension and assimilation of practices inherent to being 'with woman'. This paper examines pre-registration nursing students' perceptions of the practice of intentional rounding and perceived benefits for nurses and patients. Intentional rounding was developed to ensure nursing staff regularly check on patients to ensure that all care needs are met. It has been linked to a reduction in falls and call bell use, and an increase in patient safety. No previous studies have examined pre-registration nursing students' role in the practice of intentional rounding during clinical placements nor the perceptions of rounding practices, important from a future workforce perspective. A cross-sectional multisite study was undertaken, and pre-registration nursing students completed the Nurses' Perceptions of Patient Rounding Scale between August 2017– June 2018, distributed using online education platforms and email. Strobe reporting guidelines were used to report findings. Participants perceived positive benefits in intentional rounding for nurses and patients. Mixed opinions surrounded the sufficiency of education received around the intervention. Previous nursing experience was linked to opposing opinions of intentional rounding, depending on education levels. Participants had a positive perception of intentional rounding practices overall. Education surrounding intentional rounding needs to be consistent, and introduced before students are expected to actively participate in the practice of rounding on clinical placement. • Nursing students benefit from intentional rounding practices, as do their patients. • Nursing students require education and active participation in intentional rounding. • There are inconsistencies in theory and observed practice of intentional rounding.
