The article discusses a pilot study that examined the perceptions of rehabilitation nurses who are working in or who have worked 12-hour shifts in an acute rehabilitation hospital, which can help facilities in retaining their nursing staff. The results indicated that 12-hour shifts allowed greater satisfaction in such areas as family life, communication with nurses and patient care. Facilities are advised to avoid scheduling nurses for shifts longer than 12 hours to lessen fatigue.
