Aim: This research aimed to uncover elements of a comprehensive, trauma-informed (TI) multidisciplinary health professions simulation framework to improve the delivery of care to traumatized patients., Background: Trauma is a pervasive public health problem requiring a TI approach. Simulation is an evidence-based teaching strategy that advances knowledge and clinical reasoning. There is a lack of scientifically based simulation education models addressing the delivery of TI care for the health professions., Method: A Delphi study utilizing a panel of experts was conducted to identify the most critical elements of a simulation framework., Results: Phase one identified 10 content areas and 111 subcontent areas. Background: The change from clinical nurse specialist to nurse practitioner model with emphasis on the biomedical prescriber role significantly affected graduate education/practice., Aim/method: This article reports solutions, lessons learned, and insights from faculty in a four-year Workforce Development Project supported by an academic-practice partnership. Lessons learned that are shared as administrative and clinical practice insights include use of experiential learning platform and interaction process recordings, confirmation of the state of nurse psychotherapy blocks to clinical placements, movement toward a salutogenic psychosocial nursing process, changing student evaluation language of preceptors, and implementation of an Advanced Practice Nursing model for clinical supervision., Results: The educational hypothesis that in-person experiential learning in a workshop format with live simulations is critical to the professional development of psychiatric mental health advanced practice nursing is supported. Resistance to the cultural change operationalized through the curriculum is described. Abstract: Graduate students are faced with many stressors, including school, work, and home roles. They may not have the self-care skills and support to manage the increased stress from school. Self-care goal setting check-ins were implemented in a graduate course to support students' stress management. Student resilience levels, wellness, and burnout were moderate. Students indicated the check-ins were helpful, yet still found challenges in completing self-care. They also stated less assignments and integrating more wellness into the curriculum would be helpful in supporting their self-care goals. Abstract: Prelicensure nursing students manage various stressors, including a rigorous curriculum, physically and psychologically demanding clinical rotations, supplementary work, family responsibilities, and an evolving licensure exam. Because of these stressors, nursing programs must address students' mental health concerns and the potential impact on academic performance. At a private university in the Midwest, a student-centered care plan reflection was implemented to support mental health concerns about the National Council Licensure Examination and promote coping skills. Background: The change from a clinical nurse specialist to nurse practitioner model has significantly affected graduate education and practice because of emphasis on the dominant biomedical prescriber role, marginalizing the nurse-psychotherapy and consultation-liaison roles fundamental to quality psychiatric advanced practice nursing practice., Aim/method: We report on a four-year Workforce Development Project supported by an academic-practice partnership to restore formation and skill building of the marginalized roles. Abstract: An educational innovation centered on mindfulness was developed to support the well-being of first-year nursing students at a large public university. Students participated in a week-long experiential learning program before their first semester. They then enrolled in a one-credit course that fostered well-being through research and evidence-based mindfulness practices. Abstract: The objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) is effective for the evaluation of clinical competence. Studies examining the use of OSCEs in undergraduate mental health nursing education in the United States are limited. A pilot study and a follow-up study were conducted to establish the reliability and validity of a mental health OSCE to evaluate the clinical competence of prelicensure nursing students. Aim: The aim of the study was to explore relationships between perceived faculty support and prevalence of severe/extremely severe depression, anxiety, and stress levels among undergraduate baccalaureate nursing students., Background: Emerging research supports nursing students suffering from extreme psychological distress. Educational success and mental health wellness are influenced by external support., Method: A mixed-methods design was used for this descriptive, cross-sectional study. A national convenience sample of 1,163 undergraduate baccalaureate nursing students completed the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21, Perceived Faculty Support Scale, and a demographic questionnaire. Emerging themes in the qualitative data were identified., Results: Nearly 54 percent of nursing students suffered from severe/extremely severe depression, anxiety, or stress. Abstract: With deep historical roots in psychiatry, structural racism persists in psychiatric nursing today. Psychiatric nurses may hold implicit biases and stereotypical beliefs that influence how they perceive, assess, and interact with people from different racial backgrounds, leading to discrimination, poor treatment, and misdiagnosis. To eliminate discrimination in clinical care and diversify the workforce, there is an urgent need to integrate teaching and learning strategies that address influences of racism and racial identity in psychiatric nursing education. Abstract: The number of people facing mental health issues continues to grow in the aftermath of COVID-19. Background and Purpose: Although the prevalence of dissociative disorders (DDs) is up to 10 percent of the general population, psychiatric-mental health (PMH) registered nurses lack education on how to care for individuals diagnosed with these disorders., Method: Sixty-two PMH nurse educators completed an anonymous online survey about their perceptions of teaching DDs to nursing students. Braun and Clarke's six-phase framework was used to conduct an inductive, reflexive thematic analysis of the data., Results: Three primary themes were identified: lack of resources, differing opinions on the value of teaching DDs, and stigma., Conclusion: Though roughly 75 percent of participants reported that they teach DDs to their nursing students, they endorsed concerning misperceptions about the diagnoses. Abstract: Utilizing Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice™, a virtual reality (VR) platform was created to meet American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essential and Quad Council Public Health competencies. The scenario, involving major depressive disorder with suicidal ideation and alcohol dependency, engages learners in assessing suicide risk, recognizing symptoms, and recommending treatment. Eighty-four prelicensure nursing students have taken part in this mental health VR simulation since spring 2023. Although no significant difference was observed between pre-post knowledge, learners appreciated the VR experience. Abstract: Emotional exhaustion in online nursing students leads to attrition in educational and professional settings. Few studies have been performed on practicing nurses enrolled in online programs. The purpose of this study was to explore factors contributing to emotional exhaustion in nursing students. Survey methodology targeted licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, and advanced practice registered nurses enrolled in online programs. Data collected from 116 students included demographics and answers to closed- and open-ended questions regarding emotional exhaustion. Participants reported high levels of emotional exhaustion related to multiple factors. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of mentoring programs on undergraduate nursing students' mental health., Background: The study of nursing has been cited as stressful, with negative effects on academic and physical well-being and mental health in nursing students., Method: An integrative review of the literature using the method of Whittemore and Knafl was performed on mentoring programs designed to mitigate student stress. Electronic databases searched included CINAHL, Medline, PubMed, Embase, ERIC, and Scopus., Results: The eight studies included in this review suggest that mentoring has positive impacts on nursing students' mental health, reducing stress and anxiety and enhancing well-being and sense of belonging., Conclusion: Mentoring programs have positive effects on mental health outcomes in undergraduate nursing students. Abstract: The rigors of graduate nursing education create significant stress for nurse anesthesia students. The taxing background of an intensive care nurse, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, compounds the inherent pressures of doctoral study. Abstract: Family nurse practitioners (FNPs) are often gatekeepers and can recognize the warning signs of suicidality yet may lack adequate education or self-confidence in identifying people in crisis. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of an online suicide prevention simulation with 53 FNP students. Pre/post responses were found to be statistically significant across all preparedness and attitudinal items following the Kognito© training (p < .001). Abstract: The purpose of this course innovation was to introduce Next Generation NCLEX (NGN)-style questions and create supplemental cooperative learning assignments (CLAs) to enhance content mastery in a prelicensure maternity course. The course itself is divided into three modules focusing on maternal, newborn, and women's health. Three CLAs and two Canvas quizzes were developed to reinforce the course content and integrate NGN-style case studies and questions. The CLAs and quizzes aligned with the course module content. Aim: Study purposes were to 1) establish the relevance and clarity of a new instrument, the Leadership in Nursing Education (LNE©) for nurse educators, and 2) provide evidence to support the reliability and validity of the LNE., Background: The future of nursing education is dependent upon the leadership of nurse faculty. Competency development requires self-assessment to engage in meaningful pathways for leadership development., Method: A Delphi study was conducted with 50 nurse faculty leaders to determine the content validity of the LNE. Aim: The aim of this study was to develop an instrument to measure competencies of gerontological nursing faculty., Background: There is no accepted instrument to assess competencies of gerontological nursing faculty., Method: To develop the Gerontological Nursing Competency Questionnaire (GNCQ), we used a modified Delphi technique focused on consensus building among experts from the National Hartford Center for Gerontological Nursing Excellence. The 25-item GNCQ measures confidence in knowledge, confidence in teaching, and interest in further training in gerontological nursing. The instrument was piloted in a large nursing department at a university in southern California., Results: Low faculty competencies in knowledge and teaching and low interest in further training were observed., Conclusion: The GNCQ demonstrated initial content validity and an ability to identify key areas of deficiency in knowledge and teaching among nursing faculty. Abstract: Caring is a fundamental professional nursing value. This study examined the effect of the clinical learning environment (CLE) on nursing students' caring behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Valuing nursing work in the CLE increased the knowledge and skills aspect of caring behavior. Higher CLE scores in affordances and engagement and student centeredness increased the respectful deference of others and positive connectedness aspects of caring behaviors. Abstract: Because the demands of nursing education can impact the physical and mental health of nursing students, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's revised Essentials require inclusion of self-care and resilience education in nursing curricula. This article describes the development, implementation, and evaluation of a self-care module in a new online undergraduate course. Using the REST mnemonic (relationships, exercise, soul, and transformative thinking), students developed personalized self-care plans for the semester. End-of-course evaluations revealed an increase in self-care activities. Abstract: This study aimed to assess and compare the global health competencies (GHCs) of nursing students in Jordan. GHCs are crucial to ensure the delivery of culturally sensitive care to diverse populations. A cross-sectional survey using the GHC questionnaire was administered to 256 nursing students. Aim: The purpose of this qualitative study was twofold: 1) explore factors contributing to the shortage of academic nurse educators (ANEs) and 2) identify opportunities to address these factors from the perspectives of nursing education institutions., Background: The nurse faculty shortage is a major national concern, with inadequate recruitment and retention. Addressing the nursing faculty shortage is important to maintain a sustained nursing workforce., Method: Using a nominal group technique (NGT), a group of 45 diverse nurse educators from across the United States formed a virtual workgroup., Results: Findings led to an action plan formulated to guide educational institutions with ways to decrease the ANE shortage through recruitment and retention., Conclusion: The evidence demonstrates the need for educational institutions to concentrate efforts on recruiting and retaining ANEs to combat the nursing shortage. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the development and impact of a project to create a statewide test bank of Next Generation NCLEX®-style items., Backround: Using a train-the-trainer model, champions created an open access resource of Next Generation NCLEX-style items to use to teach clinical judgment and then trained peers on item writing and test bank use., Method: Stufflebeam's CIPP (context, inputs, process, and products) model provided the framework for the evaluation. Data were synthesized from multiple sources including participation rates, item utilization, and survey data., Results: Twenty faculty from 13 schools were trained as champions and submitted 54 case studies, 33 bowties, and 21 trend items to the test bank. Items were used over 60,000 times in the first year., Conclusion: The statewide test bank met a need for more teaching resources. Abstract: This qualitative descriptive study explored the perceptions of 63 prelicensure undergraduate nursing students about their learning experiences and the formation and development of professional identity in nursing (PIN). Students enrolled in a required course that included PIN concepts completed a guided reflective writing assignment. Four themes emerged with data analysis: 1) learning and applying ethics and values, 2) nursing knowledge is specific to nursing practice, 3) all nurses should be leaders, and 4) demonstrating professional comportment. Implications include effective use of reflective writing assignments to facilitate student PIN formation. Abstract: Telehealth has become ubiquitous, and advanced practice nurses will need to be proficient in its use. Recent literature has shown that graduate nursing curricula may not fully prepare students for clinical telehealth practice. This article describes an interactive, module-based course that was built using instructional design principles for the training of graduate nursing students to prepare them to conduct telehealth encounters. Abstract: Doctor of nursing practice (DNP) projects with impactful health system outcomes can be a challenge for graduate students and graduate program faculty to develop. Rigorous DNP projects address patient and health system needs, meet programmatic requirements, and result in a portfolio of sustainable scholarship for DNP graduates. A strong academic-practice partnership may result in a greater likelihood of successful and impactful DNP projects. Aim: The aim of this study was to create a theoretical framework that describes how mentoring relationships in academic nursing unfold from the perspectives of nurse faculty mentors., Background: Mentoring is a strategy that can promote the satisfaction and retention of nurse faculty. Although research has focused on the experiences of protégés in mentoring relationships, little is known about mentoring from the perspectives of nurse faculty mentors., Method: Constructivist grounded theory was used to interview 24 experienced nurse faculty about their mentoring experiences., Results: The theoretical framework Growing Together: Mentors' Perspectives on Mentoring included four phases (getting together, getting going, going together, going beyond) and three strands (relationship with protégé, work of mentoring, emotional impact of mentoring)., Conclusion: Participants experienced a variety of benefits from mentoring while also experiencing a variety of challenges. Abstract: This study used a quantitative descriptive survey with a sample of 92 participants to assess perceived nurse faculty competency in their role at Saudi Arabian universities. Participants' perceptions overall were highly positive in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service competencies. Participants reported less competence in the areas of scholarship and service when they started in their role. Orientation and a mentor relationship with senior faculty were reported to aid in their transition to the faculty role. Abstract: Undergraduate nursing education builds on knowledge obtained from previous semesters to grow critical thinking skills and promote clinical judgment attainment. Aim: This study aimed to identify associations between psychological distress and perceived stress and the educational environment among baccalaureate nursing students., Background: BSN students are a high-risk group for mental problems. High attrition rates are noted among students who screen for psychological distress., Method: A quantitative descriptive design was utilized with a convenience sample of 202 students. Psychological distress was correlated with perceived stress and educational environment. Regression analysis was used to analyze the data., Results: Psychological distress was reported in 45 percent of the sample. A significant positive relationship between being married and experiencing reduced psychological distress was found. Abstract: A team-based, active learning activity was created to facilitate undergraduate nursing students' understanding of qualitative research concepts. Working in small groups, students utilized the full-text lyrics of albums by recording artist Taylor Swift to analyze phrasing, create a qualitative coding scheme, code the data, and create a content and thematic analysis. The students then collaboratively created a Google Slide to present their findings for the class. Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness of using objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) and standardized patient (SP) simulations in family nurse practitioner (FNP) education to increase students' knowledge and skill competency., Background: Many programs use OSCE and SP simulation, but there is limited empirical data demonstrating their effectiveness for Kirkpatrick's level of learning., Method: A systematic search of published and unpublished literature was conducted in seven databases/registries in February 2023. Quantitative, experimental studies and quasi-experimental studies with comparison and explicit FNP learner population were included., Results: Of 4,442 records, zero studies met the inclusion criteria. Abstract: This study aimed to uncover the educational requirements of minority rural students who aspire to pursue a career in nursing. To achieve this goal, focus groups and interviews were organized for middle school students (seventh to ninth grade) and community members with a stake in education. The outcomes of these discussions revealed crucial themes: limited knowledge of educational pathways, constraints posed by limited community resources, and a strong yearning for a mentorship program that is both informative and interactive. Abstract: Nurse educators design simulations with the intent that students transfer previous academic learning. Transfer of learning (TOL) is a complex and abstract concept with critical literature gaps needing measurement research. This study examined the association between simulation characteristics and students' TOL attitudes and the effect strength. This baseline study evidenced simulation design characteristics, as category groupings, were associated with students' TOL attitudes with positive and mostly modest effects. Aim: This scoping literature review was conducted to determine what is currently known about holistic wellness support systems (HWSSs) for nursing faculty., Background: The nurse faculty shortage has contributed to the national nursing shortage. Literature published from 2003 to 2023 was included. Abstract: This article introduces the Hybrid-Theory Innovative Clinical Teaching Strategy (HICTS) as a response to the challenges faced by nurse faculty in clinical education. With a shortage of clinical placements, preceptors, and evolving certification demands, faculty creativity is vital. HICTS integrates several learning theories to provide a transformative educational approach. Through shadowing and reflecting on faculty and peer actions, learners gain confidence and improved clinical reasoning. Abstract: The academic performance of nursing students significantly impacts their ability to deliver quality patient care. This descriptive correlational study investigated the effects of nursing students' locus of control, motivation, and learning strategies on their academic performance in a sample of 515 students. External locus of control was associated with higher scores in extrinsic goal orientation, task value, elaboration, and academic performance. Locus of control, test anxiety, and organization were identified as predictors of academic performance. Abstract: Over time, unmanaged stress and anxiety can potentially impact nursing students' health and academic performance. A randomized controlled approach explored the effects music has on stress and anxiety levels in undergraduate nursing students. Students ( n = 89) were randomized into two recording groups, and variables such as demographics, heart rate, blood pressure, and State-Trait Anxiety (STAI) scores were measured and compared. There were significant differences in mean STAI scores ( p < .001), in heart rate means ( p < .000), and in mean blood pressures ( p < .001). Abstract: Burnout, one possible cause of the nurse faculty shortage, may be mitigated by resilience. This study found that faculty who scored unusually low in resilience were likely to feel emotionally exhausted and depersonalized; however, even those with average scores in resilience were likely to feel emotionally exhausted, if not depersonalized. These findings suggest that interventions that increase resilience may reduce the frequency of the most severe burnout profiles among nurse educators. Aim: The primary purpose of this study was to explore relationships between self-efficacy, peer support, coping style, intent to work at the bedside, and resilience in nursing students., Background: Resilience correlates with one-year retention at the bedside. Retention of bedside nurses improves patient outcomes., Method: A quantitative, correlational design determined relationships between variables. Surveys were completed by 205 participants. Surveys included a program type list, intent to work at the bedside items, the Brief Cope Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Peer Group Caring Interaction Scale., Results: Significant relationships were found between resilience and self-efficacy, resilience and coping style, and peer support and approach coping style. Half of the respondents intended to work at the bedside for two years after graduation.
