- Abstract
Objectives: the culture and the eating habits of a territory give shape its gastronomy and determine the nutritional and health status of its population. We set the goal of reviewing food, culture, gastronomy and the nutritional and health status of the Catalan population. Methods: bibliographic and documentation search. Results: the origin of Catalan gastronomy dates back to the classical era. From Greek and Roman times, when olive oil and wine were incorporated into our cuisine, until today, multiple civilizations have influenced it, being the Arab contribution and the discovery of America fundamental events in the increase of Spanish wealth and its gastronomic variety. At Catalan level, the geographical, cultural and social characteristics of Catalonia, with a marked Mediterranean influence, were incorporated and creating Catalan cuisine and gastronomy, which currently have international recognition and prestige. The food consumption of the Catalan population has been studied since 1983. Nowadays, it shows a food consumption and an energy and nutrients intake similar to the national average, similarly to the prevalence of morbidity and lifestyles. Conclusion: in order to that the union of gastronomy and food consumption favors also the health of population, we must encourage the recovery of the healthiest and easiest to prepare dishes from their gastronomy and boost modifications that improve technically the more complex and/ or less healthy dishes. - Abstract
Introduction: This study aimed to analyze the nutritional status among Colombian children and adolescents and to determine the relationship between the nutritional status according to the body mass index (BMI) and the waist circumference (WC). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 6.383 children and adolescents with age of 9 to 17.9 years old from Bogota, Colombia. Participants completed the Krece Plus questionnaire validated by the enKid study as an indicator of the nutritional level with the following categories: high (test ≥ 9), medium (test 6-8) and low (test ≤ 5). Other measures were: weight, height, WC and BMI as markers of the nutritional status. Results: Overall, 57.9% of the participants were girls (mean age 12.7 ± 2.3 years old). The nutritional status was low with out large differences by sex and decreasing by age. In all categories of BMI, over 50% of boys and girls follow lower-quality diet, shown worse with advancing age. In both sexes, trends were observed between low nutritional level with the development of overweight. Also, WC was associated with a lower score in the Krece Plus in both sexes. Conclusions: The low nutritional level is related to changes in the nutritional status (WC and BMI) in scholars from Bogota. These findings may encourage further interventions for the improvement of nutritional habits among scholars from Colombia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: an adequate monitoring and the compliance of the nutritional requirements are essential for fetal development and successful control of pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to determine the association between sociodemographic factors and the pre-birth monitoring associated with perinatal mortality in pregnant women from Colombia. Methods: this was a cross-sectional analysis from the 2010 Colombian Demographic and Health Survey and the National Nutritional Survey that included 14 754 pregnant women between 13 and 44 years old. Sociodemographic factors included: new born sex, geographic region, socioeconomic status (SISBEN), pre-birth monitoring (weight control, uterus height, blood pressure, fetal cardiac activity, biochemistry essays, urine analysis) and the supplementation of iron, calcium and folic acid, were collected by structured questionnaire. Associations were established through multivariable and binary regression models. Results: sociodemographic factors such as living in high-density cities, pacific and western regions and low socioeconomic status (SISBEN I) showed a highest perinatal mortality with rates of 1.7%, 1.5%, 1.4% and 1.4%, respectively. After adjustment by new born sex, geographic region and SISBEN score, an adequate monitoring of weight control (OR = 5.12), blood pressure (OR = 5.18), biochemistry essays (OR = 2.19), supplementation of iron (OR = 2.09), calcium (OR=1.73) and folic acid (OR = 2.73) were associated as facilitators of perinatal mortality. Introduction: Introduction: the aging of S panish population has increased in the last decades; in Santander, 24,73 % of the population are elderly people. Adherence to the recommendations for a healthy diet in this group has been associated with improved health status and quality of life. Objectives: to assess the degree of adherence to the recommendations issued by the Healthy Eating Guide for Primary Care and Citizen Groups of the SENC (2018) in a non-institutionalized population sample between 65 and 79 years of age in the municipality of Santander (Spain). Methods: this was a cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study. A total of 317 individuals aged 71.8 (± 4.1) years, attending three Primary Care Centers (CAP) of the Cantabrian Health Service (SCS), participated. A self-developed questionnaire was extracted from the 2018 SENC Guide recommendations. The relationship between two independent qualitative variables was analyzed using the chi-squared test, considering significant a p-value < 0.05. Results: adherence to the recommendations in foods for daily consumption was: water (23 %), cereals and potatoes (12,9 %), fruits (50,2 %), vegetables (16,7 %), olive oil (61,8 %) and dairy products (39,1 %). For weekly-consumption foods it was: fish (12 %), white meats (17 %), eggs (19,9 %), legumes (75,1 %) and nuts (36,9 %). Conclusions: the results obtained show a low adherence to SENC recommendations except for legumes. For this reason, it is necessary to influence this population group in order to improve their dietary habits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

ADOLESCENT health , *BONE density , *BODY composition , *ADOLESCENT obesity , *DISEASES in teenagers , *OBESITY risk factors - Abstract
Introduction: There is controversy over the effect of overweight and obesity in bone mineralization in adolescence. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the level of bone mineral density (BMD) in a population of adolescents and study its relationship with body composition. Methods: The study population consisted of 157 adolescents (93 women and 64 men) of the province of Granada (Spain). The mean age was 14.22 ±1.41 year. BMD was assessed by calcaneal osteosonography. The densitometric parameters were: Broadbandultrasound attenuafion( BUA), T -score and Z -score. Body composition was determined with bio-electrical Impedance analyser. Results: The overweight and obese adolescents had higher values in the BUA versus normal-weighted adolescents (95.4 ± 17.77 and 90.0 ± 1.08 vs 81.1 ± 17.79), showing significant differences(p < 0.001 and p < 0.05, respectively). Even after adjustment for lean mass and fat mass, differences remained in overweight and obese subjects (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001). Correlation with lean mass was greater than with fat mass (B =, 402 p < 0.000 and B =, 228 p < 0.002). Conclusions: Adolescents with overweight and/or obesity have higher levels of BMD even after adjustment for fat mass and muscle mass. Our results suggest that BMD increases in response to increased muscle mass in adolescents with overweight and/or obesity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
