Summary: Multicomponent community‐based obesity prevention interventions that engage multiple sectors have shown promise in preventing obesity in childhood; however, economic evaluations of such interventions are limited. This systematic review explores the methods used and summarizes current evidence of costs and cost‐effectiveness of complex obesity prevention interventions. A systematic search was conducted using 12 academic databases and grey literature from 2006 to April 2022. Studies were included if they reported methods of costing and/or economic evaluation of multicomponent, multisectoral, and community‐wide obesity prevention interventions. Results were reported narratively based on the Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards. Seventeen studies were included, reporting costing or economic evaluation of 13 different interventions. Five interventions reported full economic evaluations, five interventions reported economic evaluation protocols, two interventions reported cost analysis, and one intervention reported a costing protocol. Five studies conducted cost‐utility analysis, three of which were cost‐effective. One study reported a cost‐saving return‐on‐investment ratio. The economic evidence for complex obesity prevention interventions is limited and therefore inconclusive. Challenges include accurate tracking of costs for interventions with multiple actors, and the limited incorporation of broader benefits into economic evaluation. Summary: Public health research and practice is increasingly employing systems thinking to help grapple with complex issues, from obesity to HIV treatment. At the same time, there is growing recognition that to address a given problem it is essential collaborate with those most at risk of or affected by it. Group model building (GMB), a process grounded in system dynamics, combines systems thinking and participatory methods to structure and address complex issues. As part of the CO‐CREATE project we conducted GMB sessions with young people in six countries to create causal loop diagrams showing the factors that they believe drive obesity. This paper describes the background to GMB and the process we used to construct causal loop diagrams; it discusses how GMB contributed to generating noteworthy and useful findings, and the strengths and limitations of the method. Using GMB, we identified areas of concern to adolescents in relation to obesity that have so far had little attention in obesity research and policy: mental health and online activity. In using GMB, we also helped answer calls for a more participatory approach to youth involvement in research and policy development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary Community‐based interventions (CBIs) can be effective and feasible for the prevention of childhood obesity. The aim of this umbrella review is to determine if systematic reviews report sufficient information to guide replication or adaptation of CBIs to a variety of contexts and aid in further development of childhood obesity prevention CBIs. Six databases were searched for systematic reviews including obesity prevention CBIs involving 0–18 year olds and reporting weight‐related outcomes. Two researchers screened results. Evidence‐to‐decision frameworks guided which details may be required for decision‐makers to design and carry‐out a CBI, including information on intervention characteristics, outcome reporting and translation factors. From 3935 search results, 40 studies were included. The most frequently reported relevant pieces of information were behaviors targeted (100% of systematic reviews), intervention duration (90%) and settings involved (97.5%). Less frequently reported factors included specific actions implemented (48%), intervention intensity (30%) and organizations, or contributors involved (40%). There was a low level of reporting of equity considerations (27.5%), adverse events (20%), and costs/cost‐effectiveness (17.5%). Multilevel interventions for child obesity prevention have demonstrated effectiveness, yet additional documentation of successful intervention processes is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: There is strong support across multiple sectors for the implementation of policies to create healthier food environments as part of comprehensive strategies to address obesity and improve population diets. The existing evidence base describing food retail environments and their relationship with health outcomes is limited in several respects. This systematic review examines the current evidence regarding food retail environments in Australia, including associations with diet and people with obesity, and socioeconomic and geographic disparities. Three databases were searched and independently screened. Studies were included if they were undertaken in Australia and objectively measured the food retail environment. Sixty papers were included. The broad range of methodological approaches used across studies limited the ability to synthesize the evidence and draw conclusions. Results indicated that there is some evidence that disparities exist in food retail environments across measures of socioeconomic position and geographic area in parts of Australia. Overall, there were inconsistent findings regarding the association between the healthiness of food retail environments and diet or people with obesity. Findings support previous calls for standardized tools and measures for monitoring the healthiness of food retail environments. This is imperative to inform evidence‐based policy and evaluation in this critical component of recommended obesity prevention strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
