Cryptic species are morphologically identical but genetically distinct, and are prominent across numerous phyla. The coexistence of such closely related species on local scales would seem to run counter to traditional coexistence and competition theory; it has been hypothesized as a consequence of differences in their resource use or tolerances to environmental conditions. We developed an individual-based model of a community of three cryptic Litoditis marina (nematode) species, to understand how individual-level interspecific and intraspecific interactions might explain the coexistence of these closely related species. The model incorporates individuals' reproduction, competition, dispersal and resource use. Data characterizing the cryptic species (growth rates, dispersal ability, competitive interactions and responses to changing environmental conditions) were obtained from laboratory experiments involving both mono- and multispecific nematode cultures, and are used to parameterize the model. Simulation studies are used to investigate which individual-level mechanisms of dispersal and interaction lead to the characteristic population-level patterns observed experimentally. Our results highlight the key role of intraspecific competition in mediating dispersal and therefore co-occurrence of the cryptic species. The differences in dispersal also influence the response of the cryptic species to competition, a combination of factors that provides an explanation for their co-occurrence. These results provide insights into how changes in individual-level processes can be amplified to affect population-level co-occurrence.

There are currently few predictions about when evolutionary processes are likely to play an important role in structuring community features. Determining predictors that indicate when evolution is expected to impact ecological processes in natural landscapes can help researchers identify eco-evolutionary ���hotspots', where eco-evolutionary interactions are more likely to occur. Using data collected from a survey in freshwater cladoceran communities, landscape population genetic data and phenotypic trait data measured in a common garden, we applied a Bayesian linear model to assess whether the impact of local trait evolution in the keystone species Daphnia magna on cladoceran community trait values could be predicted by population genetic properties (within-population genetic diversity, genetic distance among populations), ecological properties (Simpson's diversity, phenotypic divergence) or environmental divergence. We found that the impact of local trait evolution varied among communities. Moreover, community diversity and phenotypic divergence were found to be better predictors of the contribution of evolution to community trait values than environmental features or genetic properties of the evolving species. Our results thus indicate the importance of ecological context for the impact of evolution on community features. Our study also demonstrates one way to detect signatures of eco-evolutionary interactions in communities inhabiting heterogeneous landscapes using survey data of contemporary ecological and evolutionary structure.

Colonization dynamics may strongly influence within and among population genetic variation and evolutionary potential of populations. We here analyze the genetic structure during the first three years of 12 cyclical parthenogenetic Daphnia populations in newly created pond habitats. One to three genotypes were observed to colonize the populations, indicating a limited number of founders. Pronounced changes in genetic structure were associated with hatching of sexual dormant eggs after a period of absence of the newly founded populations from the active community. Despite rapid colonization, genetic differentiation among populations was fairly high with limited decay over time, suggesting long-lasting founder effects. After initial colonization, no new alleles were observed in any of the populations, and our analyses suggests that this reflects reduced establishment success of later arrivals. Rare alleles increased in frequency, which likely is the result of inbreeding depression in selfed offspring of initially abundant clones, providing a fitness advantage to the sexual offspring of initially rare clones.

Only recently ecologists started treating the previously separately considered benthic, littoral and pelagic zones of lake ecosystems as closely connected compartments. Here we study a link between organisms belonging to a different compartment - namely the pelagic and the littoral - through behavior in a series of laboratory experiments. Waterfleas of the genus Daphnia are inhabitants of the pelagic zone and suffer a high predation pressure from syntopic vertebrate predators (mainly fish). Presumably to escape this predation, they sometimes migrate in the day to the littoral to seek refuge within macrophytes and return to the pelagic at night. Zygopterans from the genus Ischnura do commonly co-occur in ponds with Daphnia and are known as opportunistic predators of Daphnia. In two initial experiments in microcosms in the lab we showed that Ischnura larvae are littoral predators strongly associated with macrophytes. Although we found that predation rates of individual Ischnura larvae on Daphnia are approximately 1.5 fold lower in macrophytes compared to open water, total predation from Ischnura on Daphnia per unit area is tenfold higher within macrophytes than in open water, making the open water a safer place for Daphnia with regard to Ischnura predation. In a third microcosm experiment we monitored horizontal distribution of Daphnia in the absence, presence and odor only of Ischnura larvae. After 2 hours, on average 10% less Daphnia remained within the vegetation when Ischnura larvae or only their odor were present compared to when Ischnura or their odor were absent. We interpret this as a behavioral anti-predation response of Daphnia to the presence of Ischnura larvae that seems primarily chemically mediated. The observed horizontal migration of the pelagic prey driven by the littoral predator may couple both lake compartments and may interact with the predator-prey relationships within the pelagic.

Competition is one of the main drivers of dispersal, which can be an important mechanism to achieve permanent or temporal coexistence of multiple species. This coexistence can be achieved by a dispersal-competition tradeoff, spatial store effects or neutral dynamics. Here we test the effect of inter- and intraspecific competition on dispersal of four species of the marine nematode species complex Litoditis marina. A previous study in closed microcosms without a possibility for dispersal had demonstrated pronounced interspecific competition, leading to the exclusion of one species. We now investigated whether 1) the dispersal is affected by interspecific interactions, by intraspecific competition (density) or by food availability, 2) the dispersal dynamics influence assemblage composition and can lead to co-occurrence of the species, and 3) the abiotic environment (here salinity) can affect these dynamics. We show that density is the main driver for dispersal in two of the four species. Dispersal of a third species always started at the same time irrespective of density, whereas in the fourth species interspecific interactions accelerated dispersal. Remarkably, this fourth species was not a strong competitor, suggesting that a dispersal–competition tradeoff does not explain the observed coexistence. Salinity did not alter the timing of dispersal when interspecific interactions were present but did affect assemblage composition. Consequently, spatial store effects may influence coexistence. All four species co-occurred in fairly stable abundances throughout the present experiment indicating the importance of species specific dispersal strategies for coexistence. Co-occurrence can be facilitated because competition is postponed or avoided by dispersal. Neutral dynamics also played a role as intra- and interspecific competition were of similar importance in three of the four species. We conclude that dispersal is a driver of the coexistence of closely related nematode species, and that population density and interspecific interactions shape these dynamics.
