This paper takes a broad overview of the outlook for the Iraqi gas industry. It notes that the country is the least explored among the major hydrocarbon producers, and that its undiscovered gas reserves (free and associated) are estimated at more than 9,000 billion cubic metres — compared with 3,000 bcm for proven reserves. Gas production and consumption have been growing steadily in the past ten years, despite war damage and the United Nations embargo. Liquefied petroleum gas is the preferred domestic fuel, and plans are under consideration for enhancing its consumption. Studies are being directed towards optimising the use of the countrys gas resources, both associated and free, and the export possibilities are being examined. more...
