• We designed a fiber sensor system comprising fused silica fiber Bragg grating and silicon core fiber-based fiber Bragg grating. • A hybrid fiber Bragg grating sensor system was proposed, employing only two sensing devices to detect three different environmental targets. • Our focus was solely on addressing the connection between two distinct fibers, namely fused silica and silicon core fiber. We discussed the associated loss and spectral distortion issues. In this article, we introduce a multi-parameter fiber sensor system that utilizes a hybrid FBG design. The design combines a fused silica fiber Bragg grating and a fiber Bragg grating based on a silicon core fiber. This combination enables the sensor to detect surrounding temperature, water level, and refractive index. The sensor successfully measured temperature within the range of 10 to 40 °C, water level within the range of 40 to 140 cm, and refractive index within the range of 1.2 to 1.4. These ranges exhibit a high level of linearity within the proposed sensing range. Additionally, we discuss the challenges associated with connecting the fused silica fiber and the silicon core fiber. A C-band erbium doped fiber ring laser is proposed and investigated. With the use of two sub-ring cavities and a saturable absorber, a high quality and stable fiber ring laser is obtained for high optical signal to noise ratio operation in lightwave transmission. As different fiber Bragg gratings are employed as the wavelength filter, a narrow 3 dB-bandwidth is necessary for the high quality operation. • 8-time division multiplexed sensors and 58.78m sensing fiber for each element. • Low background phase noise level below 100 Hz. • Low inflection frequency for all the 8 elements. • Low TDM crosstalk. An inline time division multiplexed (TDM) fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interferometric sensor array for low frequency bands was presented. The length of the sensing fiber for each element was 58.78 m and the TDM number was 8, both of which are the largest to the best of our knowledge. Besides, in order to pick up phases stably in this ultra-long array with low background noise, a polarization switching (PS) and crosstalk suppressing method was adopted in which a hybrid interference complex synthesis and phase generated carrier (ICS-PGC) algorithm played an important role. A unified demonstration of the ICS-PGC method suitable for 8 or more TDM channels was presented. Experiments showed that even when the PGC modulation frequency was limited to be 6 kHz, the measured noise level could achieve −92 dB@100 Hz, making the system attractive for low frequency sensing applications.
