A highly sensitive relative humidity (RH) sensor based on Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPI) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor is fabricated by splicing a segment of hollow core Bragg fiber (HCBF) with single mode fiber (SMF) and functionalized with chitosan and ultraviolet optical adhesive (UVOA) composite at the end of HCBF to form a hygroscopic polymer film. The reflection beams from the splicing point and the two surfaces of the polymer film generate the Vernier effect in the reflection spectrum, which significantly improves the humidity sensitivity of the sensor. To demodulate the envelope based on the Vernier effect and realize multi-point sensing, a digital signal processing (DSP) algorithm is proposed to process the reflection spectrum. The performance of the DSP algorithm is theoretically analyzed and experimentally verified. The proposed sensor demonstrates a high sensitivity of 1.45 nm/% RH for RH ranging from 45% RH to 90% RH. The compact size, high sensitivity and multiplexing capability make this sensor a promising candidate for RH monitoring. Furthermore, the proposed DSP can potentially be applied to other sensors based on the Vernier effect to analyze and extract valuable information from the interference spectrum.

We demonstrate a flat broadband time-stretched swept source based on extra-cavity spectral shaping. By adjusting the polarization-dependent gain profile and driving current of the booster optical amplifier (BOA), extra-cavity spectral shaping is optimized to generate output with a 1-dB bandwidth of ∼100 nm, 3-dB bandwidth of ∼140 nm and output power of ∼21.4 mW. The short-term and long-term stabilities are characterized. The average cross correlation of 183,485 round trips is 0.9997 with a standard deviation of 2×10−5, indicating high single-shot spectral similarity and high coherence. The noise floor of relative spectral energy jitter is −141.7 dB/Hz, indicating a high short-term spectral energy stability. The proposed highly stable flat broadband time-stretched swept source is applied to an optical coherence tomography (OCT) system. The axial resolution is 10.8 µm. The proposed swept source can serve as excellent light sources in ultra-fast coherent detection systems for high precision sensing and imaging.

Electro-optic (EO) modulators with a high modulation bandwidth are indispensable parts of an optical interconnect system. A key requirement for an energy-efficient EO modulator is the low drive voltage, which can be provided using a standard complementary metal oxide semiconductor circuity without an amplifying driver. Thin-film lithium niobate has emerged as a new promising platform, and shown its capable of achieving driverless and high-speed EO modulators. In this paper, we report a compact high-performance modulator based on the thin-film lithium niobate platform on a silicon substrate. The periodic capacitively loaded travelling-wave electrode is employed to achieve a large modulation bandwidth and a low drive voltage, which can support a driverless single-lane 100Gbaud operation. The folded modulation section design also helps to reduce the device length by almost two thirds. The fabricated device represents a large EO bandwidth of 45GHz with a half-wave voltage of 0.7V. The driverless transmission of a 100Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation signal is demonstrated with a power consumption of 4.49fj/bit and a bit-error rate below the KP4 forward-error correction threshold of 2.4×10−4.

Chromatic dispersion (CD) is always an obstacle to C-band high-speed intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) transmissions, especially with a fiber reach of > 20 km. To reach beyond net-100-Gb/s IM/DD transmission over 50-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF), we for the first time present a CD-aware probabilistically shaped four-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PS-PAM-4) signal transmission scheme with a FIR-filter-based pre-electronic dispersion compensation (FIR-EDC) for C-band IM/DD transmission system. With the help of the FIR-EDC at the transmitter, 100-GBaud PS-PAM-4 signal transmission at 150-Gb/s line rate and 115.2-Gb/s net rate over 50-km SSMF is realized with only feed-forward equalization (FFE) at the receiver side. The superiority of the CD-aware PS-PAM-4 signal transmission scheme over other benchmark schemes has been successfully verified by experiments. Experimental results show that 24.5% improvement of system capacity is obtained by the FIR-EDC-based PS-PAM-4 signal transmission scheme in comparison to the FIR-EDC-based on-off keying (OOK) signal transmission scheme. Compared with the FIR-EDC-based uniform PAM-4 signal transmission scheme or the PS-PAM-4 signal transmission scheme without EDC, the capacity improvement obtained by the FIR-EDC-based PS-PAM-4 signal transmission scheme becomes more profound. The results show the potential and feasibility of such CD-aware PS-PAM-4 signal transmission scheme applied in CD-constrained IM/DD datacenter interconnects.

Rayleigh scattering-based distributed optical fiber sensors with long sensing distance and large dynamic range are highly desired for application scenarios such as vehicle tracking, structure health monitoring, and geological survey. To enlarge the dynamic range, we propose a coherent optical time domain reflectometry (COTDR) based on double-sideband linear frequency modulation (LFM) pulse. By utilizing I/Q demodulation, both the positive and negative frequency band of the Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) signal can be properly demodulated. Consequently, the dynamic range is doubled without increasing the bandwidth of signal generator, photodetector (PD), and oscilloscope. In the experiment, the chirped pulse with 10 μs pulse width and 498 MHz frequency sweeping range is launched into the sensing fiber. Single-shot strain measurement is achieved over 5 km single-mode fiber with a spatial resolution of 2.5 m and a strain sensitivity of 7.5 pε/Hz. A vibration signal with 3.09 με peak-to-peak amplitude (corresponding to 461 MHz frequency shift) is successfully measured with the double-sideband spectrum, which cannot be properly recovered with the single-sideband spectrum.

The bandwidth limitation of optoelectronic devices is a key constraint for realizing higher capacity short-reach optical communication systems. In this work, we show that the performance of the timing recovery algorithm will significantly impact the performance of bandwidth-limited optical PAM-4 signals. To address this problem, we introduce a moving average filter (MAF) into the Gardner retiming loop to realize ultra-stable retiming without any pilot symbols. It enables a significantly reduced timing jitter, especially for bandwidth-limited conditions. Based on simulations, we show that the proposed retiming scheme will give a stable sampling phase, which is beneficial to the performance of the decision feedback equalizer. Compared to the system based on the traditional Gardner timing synchronization algorithm, the 2-dB power budget gain is realized. The proposed method improves the equalization performance of short-reach optical communication systems where complexity and processing latency are important concerns.

The practical cable design for optical submarine communications has a limited fiber pair count due to the mechanical considerations of cable weight and size. Consequently, multi-core fibers (MCFs) could exhibit higher capacity than the conventional single-mode fibers (SMFs) thanks to space division multiplexing (SDM). That is because the power supply to a submarine cable is fed by the voltage difference between shores. Under the power limited condition, SDM improves the cable capacity by using more paths which outperforms the SMF link whose capacity approximately complies with a logarithmic relationship to optical power. At the same time, fiber nonlinearity can be alleviated by the reduced power density of transmitted light in MCFs, due to the increased spatial diversity and mode coupling among coupled cores. In this work, we theoretically investigate the potentials of MCFs including weakly-coupled mutlicore fiber (WC-MCF) and strongly-coupled multicore fiber (SC-MCF) as the propagation media for submarine communications across the Atlantic and the Pacific. To fairly compare the performances of SMFs- and MCFs-based submarine cables, Gaussian noise (GN) model for SDM links is employed to optimize the systematic settings including modulation format, optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and single span length. Then, we develop an SDM and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) fiber transmission model based on coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations (CNSE) to investigate the optical filed coupling effect in MCFs-based cables. Developed transmission model has been self-examined by measuring the inter-core crosstalk (IC-XT) and spatial mode dispersion (SMD), referring to the set values. As indicated by the theoretical analysis, the WC-MCFs cable exhibits larger capacity than the SMFs cable, when fiber pair count is limited below 32. Moreover, the SC-MCFs cable outperforms the WC-MCFs cable thanks to the reduced fiber nonlinearity due to the random mode coupling and the assitance of multiple-input and multiple-output digital signal processing (MIMO-DSP). At last, the marginal influences of IC-XT, SMD and insertion loss of Fan-in and Fan-out couplers are also analyzed for the MCFs cable.

Kerr soliton frequency comb generation in nonlinear microcavities with compact configurations are promising on-chip sources. Current Kerr comb generation by using a single microcavity with a tunable CW pump laser or high-power femtosecond pulse pump are difficult to be integrated on chip. In this paper, we propose an on-chip soliton comb generation scheme by tuning the coupling coefficient of two coupled microcavities instead of tuning the wavelength of the cw pump laser or using a pulsed pump laser in a single microcavity. The two microcavities are assumed to be identical. We showed by numerical simulation that Kerr comb generation is possible in both the blue and red detuned regions of the main microcavity in the coupled cavity system. We further found that the range and boundary of the soliton generation region of the couple microcavities depend on the coupling coefficient between the coupled cavities. To ensure that the modes being coupled have identical optical paths, we designed a Sagnac loop structure which couples the clockwise and counterclockwise modes in a single microcavity and demonstrated Kerr comb generation in both the blue and red detuned regions by tuning the coupling coefficient. The proposed Kerr comb generation scheme can be utilized for chip-scale integrated soliton comb sources, which will contribute to the development of on-chip applications.

An optimized design of 7-ring-core 5-mode-group fiber for mode-group-based dense space-division multiplexing (DSDM) is proposed. It is found that decreasing the refractive index of the center and trench of each ring core can increase the available ring-core thickness and meanwhile suppress the radial higher-order modes. Based on the simulation, a fiber, with a thicker ring core and a relatively low refractive index contrast at the ring-core boundaries, is found of higher mode purity and lower macro-bending-caused mode coupling. In the experiment, the seven cores of the fabricated fiber have low transmission losses around −0.25 dB/km with only a few fluctuations. The three higher-order mode groups (MG2,1, MG3,1, and MG4,1) are verified to be in a weak-coupling state (crosstalk of which are less than −12 dB) over a transmission length of 23 km.

To increase the transmission capacity, ultra-wideband wavelength-division multiplexing (UWB WDM) has been exploited to enlarge the spectral range. However, inter-channel stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS) results in power transition from high-frequency channels to low-frequency channels in wideband scenarios, which degrades the Q-factor of signals. Hence, we modify the optimization method of power control by applying the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm to search for the optimal power slopes and offsets of three bands to construct an optimum distribution of launch powers over channels. High transmission capacity can be reached by carrying 384 channels (96+96+192) in the C+L+S band with the consideration of dynamic Raman gain and channel-dependent parameters. We show that compared to using brute-force searching (BFS), a comparable and even higher transmission capacity can be achieved by the SA algorithm. Meanwhile, the searching speed of the SA algorithm is much faster. Also, different optimizing strategies can be selected to balance the trade-off between capacity and spectral flatness. This method can be used for designing arbitrary optical fiber UWB WDM systems before practical testing.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate symmetrical (homo-modal) and asymmetrical (hetero-modal) full-duplex bi-directional architectures based on dual-vector eigenmodes multiplexing over a 3 km few mode fiber (FMF). Firstly, 4 vector modes (VMs) of 2 mode groups (MGs), l = 0 (HE11o and HE11e modes) and l = +2 (EH11o and EH11e modes), each carrying a 14 GBaud quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signal, are utilized in the up and down links and a 224 Gb/s same-mode bi-directional transmission is successfully realized. The crosstalk between the VMs in l = 0 and l = +2 of this full-duplex system is less than −13.8 dB. To strengthen the immunity to performance degradation induced by connector reflection and back scattering, we propose an effective approach to mitigate impairments by using hetero-modes on two terminals of the bi-directional system. Then, 2 VMs of l = 0 and 2 VMs of l = +2 are respectively employed in the up and down streams. The channel isolation between the VMs in l = 0 and l = +2 of such full-duplex link is larger than 19 dB, which supports a 448 Gb/s bi-directional transmission with 28 GBaud 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) modulation over a 3 km FMF by using 2 × 2 MIMO. Moreover, mode-wavelength division multiplexing including 2 modes and 4 wavelengths in both up and down streams is implemented in the transmission system. A total capacity of the 1.792 Tb/s link with 28 GBaud 16-QAM signal over each channel is successfully realized over the 3 km FMF. The measured bit-error-ratios (BERs) of all channels are below the 7% hard decision forward error correction (FEC) threshold at 3.8 × 10−3. The experimental results adequately indicate that such a scheme has a great potential in high-speed bi-directional point-to-point (P2P) optical interconnects.

A low-complexity sparse absolute-term based nonlinear equalizer (AT-NLE) is proposed to eliminate the nonlinear signal distortions for intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) systems. By performing the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm to adaptively obtain the significant kernels of both the linear and absolute terms, the computational complexity of the proposed sparse AT-NLE is dramatically reduced and independent of the memory length. The performance of the proposed sparse AT-NLE is experimentally evaluated in a C-band 56-Gbit/s four-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM-4) system over a 30-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). Experimental results show that compared with the conventional diagonally-pruned Volterra nonlinear equalizer (DP-VNLE) or DP-AT-NLE, the proposed sparse AT-NLE saves 77.7% or 76% real-valued multiplications when their achieved bit error ratios (BERs) are similar. Meanwhile, the proposed sparse AT-NLE reduces the computational complexity by > 28% compared to the sparse DP-VNLE at a BER of 5 × 10−4. The proposed low-complexity sparse AT-NLE shows great potential for high-performance and low-cost IM/DD optical transmission systems.

To cope with the nonlinear distortions and the chromatic dispersion (CD) induced power fading in double-side band (DSB) intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) transmission systems, high-performance Volterra nonlinear equalizers (VNLEs) including Volterra feed-forward equalizer (VFFE) and Volterra decision-feedback equalizer (VDFE) are widely applied. However, the conventional VNLEs have high computational complexity, especially for longer memory lengths. In this paper, based on sparse and weight-sharing strategies for significant kernel reduction, we propose four low-complexity NLEs including a sparse diagonally pruned VDFE (S-DP-VDFE), a sparse diagonally pruned absolute-term DFE (S-DP-ATDFE), a weight-sharing DP-VDFE (WS-DP-VDFE), and a weight-sharing DP-ATDFE (WS-DP-ATDFE), and present a comprehensive comparison among them in terms of computational complexity and bit error ratio (BER) performance in a C-band 100-Gbit/s PAM-4 transmission system over 60-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). The experimental results show that the proposed S-DP-VDFE and WS-DP-VDFE not only exhibit comparable performance with the conventional DP-VDFE but also reduce the complexity by 54.5% and 45.9%, respectively. While the proposed S-DP-ATDFE and WS-DP-ATDFE yield lower complexity at the expense of a slight performance degradation. Compared with the proposed S-DP-VDFE, S-DP-ATDFE, and WS-DP-VDFE, the proposed WS-DP-ATDFE with the lowest number of real-valued multiplications of 45 achieves up to 90.9%, 81.6%, and 95.8% complexity reduction, respectively, at the 7% hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) BER limit of 3.8 × 10−3. The proposed low-complexity WS-DP-ATDFE shows great potential in low-cost and high-performance IM/DD optical transmission systems.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel interference fading suppression method for phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) using space-division multiplexed (SDM) pulse probes in few-mode fiber. The SDM probes consist of multiple different modes, and three spatial modes (LP01, LP11a and LP11b) are used in this work for proof of concept. Firstly, the Rayleigh backscattering light of different modes is experimentally characterized, and it turns out that the waveforms of Phi-OTDR traces of distinct modes are all different from each other. Thanks to the spatial difference of fading positions of distinct modes, multiple probes from spatially multiplexed modes can be used to suppress the interference fading in Phi-OTDR. Then, the performances of the Phi-OTDR systems using single probe and multiple probes are evaluated and compared. Specifically, statistical analysis shows that both fading probabilities over fiber length and time are reduced significantly by using multiple SDM probes, which verifies the significant performance improvement on fading suppression. The proposed novel interference fading suppression method does not require complicated frequency or phase modulation, which has the advantages of simplicity, good effectiveness and high reliability., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 17 references

In this paper, a high-sensitivity distributed optical fiber salinity sensor based on frequency-scanning phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR) and polyimide-coated single-mode fiber is proposed. Distributed salinity sensing over an 1100 m polyimide-coated fiber with a 1 m spatial resolution was demonstrated, and a sensitivity of 782.4 MHz/(mol/L) was achieved with the salinity changing from 0 mol/L to 1.61 mol/L. Then the measurement accuracies of frequency shift and salinity were evaluated theoretically and experimentally. Both theoretical and experimental results show that the measurement accuracy deteriorates as the pulse width decreases, resulting in a trade-off between the spatial resolution and measurement accuracy. The measurement uncertainty of salinity is 0.022 mol/L in the case of 30 cm spatial resolution. And when the spatial resolution is set to be 2 m, the measurement uncertainty of salinity decreases to 0.005 mol/L. The response time of the fiber to external salinity change has also been investigated, and it takes about 8 minutes for the fiber to reach a stable state. The proposed salinity sensor exhibits high sensitivity and long measurement range, which may be used for distributed marine environmental monitoring.

Distributed acoustic sensors (DASs) have the capability of registering faint vibrations with high spatial resolution along the sensing fiber. Advanced algorithms are important for DAS in many applications since they can help extract and classify the unique signatures of different types of vibration events. Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which have powerful spectro-temporal feature learning capability, are well suited for event classification in DAS. Generally, these data-driven methods are highly dependent on the availability of large quantities of training data for learning a mapping from input to output. In this work, to fully utilize the collected information and maximize the power of CNNs, we propose a method to enlarge the useful dataset for CNNs from two aspects. First, we propose an intensity and phase stacked CNN (IP-CNN) to utilize both the intensity and phase information from a DAS with coherent detection. Second, we propose to use data augmentation to further increase the training dataset size. The influence of different data augmentation methods on the performance of the proposed CNN architecture is thoroughly investigated. The experimental results show that the proposed IP-CNN with data augmentation produces a classification accuracy of 88.2% on our DAS dataset with 1km sensing length. This indicates that the usage of both intensity and phase information together with the enlarged training dataset after data augmentation can greatly improve the classification accuracy, which is useful for DAS pattern recognition in real applications.

We propose the asynchronous control of anisotropic diffusion (AD) algorithm, and such asynchronous anisotropic diffusion (AAD) algorithm is demonstrated experimentally to reduce noise from the sensing signals obtained from Brillouin distributed optical fiber sensors. The performance of the proposed AAD algorithm is analyzed in detail for different experimental conditions and compared with that of block-matching and 3D filtering, two-dimensional wavelet denoising, AD, and non-local means algorithms. Some key factors of the proposed algorithm, such as the impact of convolution kernel size on the performance of AD algorithms, the influence of low sampling point number (SPN) on the quality of Brillouin frequency shift and the selection of diffusion thresholds are analyzed and discussed with experimental results. The experimental results validate that the AAD algorithm can provide better root-mean-square error (RMSE) and spatial resolution (SR) than the other four algorithms, especially for higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement and higher SPNs. For lower SPNs, the performance of AAD is also not inferior to the RMSE performance of NLM and AD. The runtime of the AAD algorithm is also quite low. Moreover, the proposed algorithm offers the best SR performance as compared to other noise reduction algorithms investigated in this study. Thus, the proposed AAD algorithm can be an effective candidate to improve the measurement accuracy of Brillouin distributed optical fiber sensors.

A novel inline Mach-Zehnder interferometric (MZI) sensor based on a homemade grapefruit microstructured fiber (GMF) was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensing unit consists of a short segment of a GMF sandwiched between two single mode fibers using lateral offset splicing. The fabrication of the GMF and the GMF-based MZI sensor was introduced. Mode analysis of the GMF and theoretical simulation of the proposed MZI sensor were investigated and matched well with experimental results. The sensing performance of the MZI sensor for temperature and strain was tested. The strain and temperature sensitivity are 1.97pm/μɛ and 37pm/°C, respectively. The compact size, low cost and high sensitivity makes the MZI sensor a good candidate for sensing application.

ϕ-OTDR perturbation detection applications demand optimal precision of the perturbation location. Strategies for improving both signal-to-noise (SNR) and precision of the perturbation location in a laboratory environment may fail when applying to a very long fiber under test (FUT) in real-field environments. With this deployment, meaningful energy points representing the response of a certain perturbation can be located at random locations of the fiber other than the original location of the perturbation. These random locations are referred to as the ghost energy points that confuse the system to mistakenly consider the location of these points as the original perturbation location. We present in this paper a novel space-time scanning (ST-scan) method that segregates the ghost energy point locations from those of the real perturbation so that the original perturbation location estimation is improved.

In this paper, video block-matching and 3D filtering (VBM3D) denoising has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time in 100.8 km long-distance Brillouin optical time domain analyzer (BOTDA) sensing system with 2 m spatial resolution. Both experiments under static and slowly varying temperature environment are carried out. A temperature uncertainty of 0.43°C has been achieved with denoising by VBM3D in static temperature measurement. To our knowledge, this is one of the best temperature uncertainty reported for a sensing distance beyond 100 km. The slowly varying temperature at the end of 100.8 km fiber has also been accurately measured. VBM3D exploits both the spatial and temporal correlations of the data for denoising, thus it can significantly reduce the temperature fluctuations and keep the measured values close to the real temperature even if the temperature is temporally changing. We believe it would be useful for the long-distance sensing where the measurand may have temporal evolution in the slowly varying environment.

An improved weighted decision-feedback equalizer (IWDFE) is adopted and experimentally demonstrated to mitigate chromatic dispersion (CD) induced power fading for C-band four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) system. Based on a compressed sigmoid nonlinear function, the IWDFE is superior to the conventional DFE, rule-1 and rule-2 based WDFEs in reducing both the error propagation probability and percentage of errors. The IWDFE is combined with a feed-forward equalizer (FFE) to deal with both pre-cursor and post-cursor interference simultaneously. We also introduce 2nd-order polynomial nonlinear terms in both FFE and IWDFE at receiver side, constructing a nonlinear FFE-IWDFE (N-FFE-IWDFE) to simultaneously equalize both the CD-induced power fading and nonlinear distortions. Experimental results show that compared with nonlinear FFE-DFE (N-FFE-DFE), rule-1 and rule-2 based nonlinear FFE-WDFEs (N-FFE-WDFEs), the N-FFE-IWDFE can significantly reduce the bit error ratio (BER), which is close to that of the error-propagation-free N-FFE-DFE. By utilizing the N-FFE-IWDFE, 120-Gb/s PAM-4 transmission system over 50-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) is realized with the BER below 7% hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) limit of 3.8 × 10−3, achieving around 1.1-dB improvement of the receiver sensitivity over the N-FFE-DFE. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that an IWDFE is employed for C-band IM/DD optical transmission system.

We propose and demonstrate an all-fiber Er-doped mode-locked laser with a 3-dB spectrum of 114 nm by using nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR), which to the best of our knowledge is the first realization to date of such a broad spectrum without any spatial optical devices. The repetition rate and pulse width of the laser are 183.6 MHz and 3.7 ps, respectively. Such an all-fiber NPR mode-locked laser is then applied in time-stretch optical coherence tomography. The axial resolution is 12.1 µm. The all-fiber high speed broadband swept laser based on the time stretching technique has compact structure and high stability, which is a promising source for frequency metrology and high resolution optical coherence tomography.

In this paper, an all-fiber sensor based on hollow core Bragg fiber (HCBF) is proposed and successfully manufactured, which can be used for human breath monitoring. Benefiting from the identical outer diameters of HCBF and single mode fibers (SMFs), the sensor can be directly constructed by sandwiching a segment of HCBF between two SMFs. Based on optical propagation properties of HCBF, the transmission light is sensitive to specific environmental change induced by human breath. Thus, the breath signals can be explicitly recorded by measuring the intensity of the transmitted laser. The sensor presents a rapid response time of ∼0.15 s and recovery time of ∼0.65 s. In addition, the HCBF-based sensor shows good insensitivity to the variation of temperature and curvature, which enables its reliable sensing performance in the dynamic and changeful environment.

To combat chromatic dispersion (CD) in intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) systems, three chirp-free demonstrations are experimentally performed with an iterative pre-electronic dispersion compensation (pre-EDC) algorithm at the transmitter end, for 28 GBaud non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK), 56 GBaud NRZ-OOK and 28 GBaud four-level pulse-amplitude-modulation (PAM-4) signals, over distances of 100 km, 50 km and 40 km of single mode fiber (SMF), respectively. The iterative pre-EDC algorithm is based on the Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm, which treats the unconstrained phase at the direct detection receiver as a degree of freedom. At the receiver side, only a linear fractionally-spaced (T/2) post-feed-forward equalizer (post-FFE) is employed to combat the residual inter-symbol interference (ISI). Experimental results show that the aforementioned three demonstrations can approach the forward error correction (FEC) bit error rate (BER) threshold of 3.8 × 10−3 with (15 pre-EDC iterations and 5-tap post-FFE), (30 pre-EDC iterations and 15-tap post-FFE), and (10 pre-EDC iterations and 25-tap post-FFE), respectively. The results indicate the applicability of the pre-EDC algorithm in high-capacity IM/DD systems for transmission distances below 100 km of SMF.

Compared to glass walls with a positive curvature, those with a negative curvature have been proven to have stronger confinement of light. Therefore, we change the multi-layered air holes in a photonic crystal fiber into several negative curvature tubes. As a result, the confinement medium is shifted from a low-index cladding material into a special structure. The theoretical analysis shows that each vector eigenmode has a corresponding threshold value for the outer tube thickness. It means that we can confine the target modes and filter the unnecessary modes by shifting the outer tube thickness. After substantial investigation on this fiber, we obtain the appropriate values for each structural parameter and then fabricate this negative curvature ring-core fiber under the guidance of the simulation results. Firstly, we draw the central cane under vacuum condition, then stack the cane and six capillaries to form the preform, and finally draw the ring-core fiber by using vacuumization method. The fiber test experiment indicates that the fiber length should be at least 15 m∼20 m to form the donut facula, and the tested losses of OAM+1,1, OAM+2,1, OAM+3,1, and OAM+4,1 are 0.30 dB/m, 0.36 dB/m, 0.37 dB/m, and 0.42 dB/m, respectively.

Spectral efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) can improve the spectral efficiency for next-generation optical and wireless communications. In this work, we apply SEFDM in beyond 100-Gb/s optical intensity modulation and direct detection transmissions and propose a low-complexity logarithmic-maximum-a-posteriori (log-MAP) Viterbi decoding algorithm to achieve the maximum likelihood (ML) detection. We evaluate the likelihood of detections using a posteriori probability instead of Euclidean distance by taking both noise and inter-carrier interference into consideration. In order to balance the performance and complexity, we then employ Viterbi decoding principle to retain only certain paths with ML detections (a.k.a., the surviving paths) while discarding the others during the decoding procedure. Results show that the proposed log-MAP Viterbi decoding scheme achieves optimal performance due to the precise likelihood evaluation, which guarantees the retention of the global ML detection. By using the proposed decoding scheme, the data rate of SEFDM signals can reach 150-Gb/s in a 2-km standard single mode fiber transmission, using only 28-GHz bandwidth and 16-QAM modulation. Experimental results show that the 16-QAM modulated SEFDM signal with a bandwidth compression factor of 0.8 outperforms 32-QAM modulated OFDM, while both signals have the same bandwidth (28-GHz) and data rate (140-Gb/s), which demonstrate the superiority of SEFDM in optical short reach applications.

Instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) of microwave signals using photonic methods provides a novel and efficient approach for fast and broadband radio frequency (RF) signal analysis. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic-assisted IFM method utilizing a few-mode fiber-based microwave photonic technique. By offset splicing the few-mode fiber (FMF) with a single mode fiber, both LP01 and LP11 modes can be excited, which is used to develop a microwave photonic filter (MPF). A detailed analysis of the FMF as the true time delay line is presented. An amplitude comparison function (ACF) that is the ratio of frequency response traces of an MPF pair is established, which is used to determine the unknown microwave frequency instantaneously. The proof-of-concept experiment demonstrates a frequency measurement range of 0.5 GHz to 17.5 GHz and a measurement accuracy of ±0.2 GHz in most of the frequency points. The proposed system has the merits of simplicity, cost-effectiveness, compactness and robustness.

As one of the key indicators of signal quality in fiber communication systems, optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) needs to be accurately monitored to ensure reliable network planning, operation, and reconfiguration. OSNR monitoring techniques considering only accumulated amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise are no longer suitable for dispersion unmanaged long-haul and dense wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems, where the contribution of fiber nonlinearity to total SNR cannot be neglected. In this paper, we propose a modulation-format-transparent, accurate joint linear and nonlinear noise monitoring scheme based on calculation of correlation between two spectral components at the upper and lower sideband of the signal spectrum. Different characteristics of flat linear noise spectrum and non-flat nonlinear noise spectrum are used to distinguish the influences on the correlation value from both noise sources. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can accurately monitor SNRlinear and SNRnonlinear within a wide launch power range from −5 dBm to 5 dBm per channel for multi-channel WDM systems with a 915-km single mode fiber (SMF) link. The performance of the proposed scheme is further experimentally verified in up-to-7 channel WDM systems over a 915 km SMF link.

This paper reports an electrically generated optical waveguide for the transverse-magnetic wave. The waveguide is formed in a z-cut single-crystal lithium-niobate (LN) thin film by the electro-optic effect, where the extraordinary refractive index (RI) of the LN film is increased by a voltage applied to patterned electrodes that define the waveguide geometry. Such a waveguide can be made to exist or disappear by turning on or off the applied voltage. A straight waveguide and an S-bend waveguide with an RI contrast of ∼0.004 are generated at a voltage of 200 V. The propagation loss of the generated waveguide measured at the wavelength 532 nm is 1.8 dB/cm. Electrically generated optical waveguides could fulfill useful functions in photonic integrated circuits, such as reconfigurable cross connect and switching that require wavelength-independent and mode-independent operation.

Spectral efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) can offer a higher spectral efficiency (SE) than orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). In this work, we propose a diversity technique based on SEFDM for beyond 100-Gb/s optical intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) long reach (LR) applications. We mathematically demonstrate that the self-created inter-carrier interference of SEFDM signals can be reused to achieve a diversity gain on each sub-carrier and, in turn, improve the tolerance to power fading induced by chromatic dispersion (CD) in IM/DD LR links. Based on the proposed diversity technique, we further demonstrated a 112-Gb/s SEFDM transmission over 80-km standard single-mode fiber, using only 28-GHz bandwidth and modulation format of up to 16-QAM. Experimental results show that SEFDM with the proposed diversity technique performs robust against CD effects and outperforms the conventional OFDM with adaptive bit and power loading of the same bandwidth and data rate, which validates the superiority of the proposed SEFDM in optical IM/DD LR transmissions.

The recently proposed b-modulation method for nonlinear Fourier transform-based fiber-optic transmission offers explicit control over the duration of the generated pulses and therewith solves a longstanding practical problem. The currently used b-modulation however suffers from a fundamental energy barrier. There is a limit to the energy of the pulses, in normalized units, that can be generated. In this paper, we discuss how the energy barrier can be shifted by proper design of the carrier waveform and the modulation alphabet. In an experiment, it is found that the improved b-modulator achieves both a higher Q-factor and a further reach than a comparable conventional b-modulator. Furthermore, it performs significantly better than conventional approaches that modulate the reflection coefficient.

Benefiting from both Brillouin amplitude and phase spectral responses during Brillouin scattering, a support vector machine (SVM) assisted Brillouin optical time domain analyzer (BOTDA) enabling the improvement of sensing accuracy with only a slight sacrifice of processing speed has been proposed and demonstrated. Only one SVM model, i.e. SVM-(g + p), is required to effectively combine the Brillouin gain and phase information in the training and testing phases, which avoids separate Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) and Brillouin phase spectrum (BPS) fitting, and hence saves the processing time. Both simulation and experiments using different parameters were conducted to evaluate the improved performance of SVM-(g + p). Compared with the case of using BGS only or BPS only, SVM assisted BOTDA using combined BGS and BPS enhances the accuracy of temperature extraction by about 30% over a wide range of simulation and experiment parameters, only at a slight expense of the processing speed. Although the processing of both gain and phase information takes extra time, SVM-(g + p) assisted BOTDA still has a processing speed 80 times faster than that of using a conventional curve fitting method like Lorentzian curve fitting (LCF). The improved accuracy, together with fast processing speed, is crucial for future high-speed and accurate BOTDA sensors based on both Brillouin gain and phase detection.

In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated an IM/DD short reach transmission system with a total capacity of 608Gbit/s (net capacity of 565.4Gbit/s exclude 7% FEC overhead) employing half-cycle 16QAM Nyquist-SCM signal and 25Gbps EML at O band. Direct detection-faster than Nyquist (DD-FTN) technique was employed to compensate channel impairments. Number of taps of DD-LMS and tap coefficient of post filter in DD-FTN were experimentally studied for different baud rates. Single-lane 152Gbit/s transmission over 10km of SSMF was experimentally demonstrated. Employing a 4-lanes LAN-WDM architecture, a total capacity of 608Gbit/s transmission over 2km was successfully achieved with a receiver sensitivity lower than -4dBm. To the best of authors' knowledge, this is the highest reported baud rate of half-cycle 16QAM Nyquist-SCM signal and the highest bit rate employing IM/DD and 25Gbps EML in a four lanes LAN-WDM architecture for short reach systems in the O band.

In this paper, we present a novel accelerometer based on the Sagnac interferometer configuration using a polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF), which has a sensitivity of ~8 pm/G, and a resonant frequency exceeding 2.5 kHz. The proposed accelerometer is capable of functioning with a constant sensitivity in a large frequency range from 0 to 1 kHz which is much wider than many FBG-based accelerometers. Experimental results obtained from a field test in railway monitoring, demonstrate a broader frequency range for the proposed accelerometer compared to that of the FBG based accelerometer and is comparable to the conventional piezoelectric sensor. The abrupt change in the acceleration measured by the sensor aids in locating any defect or crack present on the railway track. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of an accelerometer based on a fiber interferometer aimed for the railway industry. The proposed accelerometer operating at high accelerations (>40 G) and capable of functioning at a broad frequency range, shows significant potential in being used in applications which require detection of strong and fast vibrations, especially in structural health monitoring of trains and railway tracks in real time.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a modulation-format-transparent dual-polarization (DP) transmitter (Tx) in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalance estimation scheme based on maximum likelihood independent component analysis (ML-ICA). The proposed scheme can separate Tx IQ imbalance from polarization crosstalk and phase noise and achieve accurate IQ imbalance estimation without training data and the information of modulation format. Firstly, the complex-ML-ICA is used to implement format-transparent polarization de-multiplexing to remove polarization crosstalk; then the real-ML-ICA is employed to estimate inverse IQ mixing matrix and compensate Tx IQ imbalance/phase noise on each polarization channel. Inverse IQ mixing matrix contains the information of phase noise and Tx IQ imbalance; Finally, Tx IQ imbalance is derived from the inverse matrix by analytic method. The impact of Tx IQ imbalance on polarization demultiplexing and carrier phase recovery (CPE) is investigated by numerical simulation from three aspects of Jones space, Stokes space, and Kurtosis. The simulation results demonstrate the proposed scheme has strong robustness to phase noise, quantization noise, and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise. The proposed ML-ICA algorithm is verified experimentally in polarization division multiplexing (PDM) quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK)/8 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)/16QAM/64QAM systems. The experimental results show the scheme can accurately estimate Tx IQ imbalance within wide range in a format transparent manner.

Significant research efforts have focused on techniques for alleviating the nuisance alarm rate (NAR) in the field of ϕ-OTDR pattern recognition systems. Unfortunately, ephemeral events were mostly neglected in previous research and algorithms meant for improving classification accuracy were emphasized at the cost of acquiring a very large number of traces. This problem engendered an additional source of NAR in a specific class of events. The proposed solution uses a novel correlation based wrapper on top of differential signals that aims to filter out the effect of unnecessary phases in direct detected ϕ-OTDR systems. This technique avoids the use of irrelevant data in these differential signals by exploiting a better use of these unnecessary phases and provides a better intensity translation with fewer acquired traces as compared with contemporary techniques of extracting features.

Linear and nonlinear impairments severely limit the transmission performance of high-speed visible light communication systems. Neural network-based equalizers have been applied to optical communication systems, which enables significantly improved system performance, such as transmission data rate and distance. In this paper, a memory-controlled deep long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network post-equalizer is proposed to mitigate both linear and nonlinear impairments in pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) based visible light communication (VLC) systems. Both 1.15-Gbps PAM4 and 0.9Gbps PAM8 VLC systems are successfully demonstrated, based on a single red-LED with bit error ratio (BER) below the hard decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) limit of 3.8 x 10−3. Compared with the traditional finite impulse response (FIR) based equalizer, the Q factor performance is improved by 1.2dB and the transmission distance is increased by one-third in the same experimental hardware setups. Compared with traditional nonlinear hybrid Volterra equalizers, the significant complexity and system performance advantages of using a LSTM-based equalizer is demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of using deep LSTM in VLC systems.

For hitless flexible coherent transceivers based next-generation agile optical network, efficient modulation format identification (MFI) is an essential element in digital signal processing (DSP) flow at the receiver-side (Rx). In this paper, we propose a blind and fast MFI scheme with high identification accuracy at low optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) regime. This is achieved by first raising the signal to the 4th power and calculate the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the corresponding spectra to distinguish 32 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) from quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 16 and 64QAM signals. Then, followed by iterative partition schemes to remove signals with phase ±π4,±3π4 (or QPSK-like phases) based on the signal amplitudes, the PAPR of the remaining signals is calculated to distinguish the other three formats. Additionally, by frequency offset (FO) pre-compensation, the spectrum can be obtained using sparse-fast-Fourier-transform (S-FFT), which greatly reduces the total complexity. The MFI performance is numerically and experimentally investigated by 28 Gbaud dual-polarization (DP) coherent optical back-to-back (B2B) and up to 1500 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) transmission system using QPSK, 16QAM, 32QAM, and 64QAM. Results show that high identification accuracy can be achieved, even when OSNR is lower than that required for the 20% forward error correction (FEC) threshold of BER=2×10-2 for each format. Furthermore, fast format switching between 64QAM-32QAM and 32QAM-16QAM are demonstrated experimentally for B2B scenario and 900 km SSMF with the proposed MFI technique, respectively.

Simultaneous temperature and strain measurement with enhanced accuracy by using Deep Neural Networks (DNN) assisted Brillouin optical time domain analyzer (BOTDA) has been demonstrated. After trained by using combined ideal clean and noisy BGSs, the DNN is applied to extract both the temperature and strain directly from the measured double-peak BGS in large-effective-area fiber (LEAF). Both simulated and experimental data under different temperature and strain conditions have been used to verify the reliability of DNN-based simultaneous temperature and strain measurement, and demonstrate its advantages over BOTDA with the conventional equations solving method. Avoiding the small matrix determinant-induced large error, our DNN approach significantly improves the measurement accuracy. For a 24-km LEAF sensing fiber with a spatial resolution of 2m, the root mean square error (RMSE) and standard deviation (SD) of the measured temperature/strain by using DNN are improved to be 4.2°C/134.2με and 2.4°C/66.2με, respectively, which are much lower than the RMSE of 30.1°C/710.2με and SD of 19.4°C/529.1με for the conventional equations solving method. Moreover, the temperature and strain extraction by DNN from 600,000 BGSs along 24-km LEAF requires only 1.6s, which is much shorter than that of 5656.3s by the conventional equations solving method. The enhanced accuracy and fast processing speed make the DNN approach a practical way of achieving simultaneous temperature and strain measurement by the conventional BOTDA system without adding system complexity.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a vector Brillouin optical time domain analyzer (BOTDA) system, which enables both distributed Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) and Brillouin phase-shift spectrum (BPS) measurements without trace averaging. The proposed scheme generates and launches a reference light into the fiber under test (FUT), together with the Stokes probe light to indicate the phase noise and distortion in the probe. The commercial integrated coherent receiver at the detection end, using a local oscillator (LO) generated with single sideband (SSB) modulation, on the one hand, improves the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to avoid the need of trace averaging for the signal acquisition. On the other hand, by processing and analyzing the receiver outputs at specific intermediate frequencies (IF), the amplitude and phase signals carried by the Stokes probe and the reference light can be resolved at once. In this way, both Brillouin gain and Brillouin phase-shift signals can be obtained simultaneously. By scanning the the Stokes probe light frequency and recording the Brillouin response at each scanning frequency, both distributions of Brillouin gain spectrum and phase-shift spectrum have been acquired. The configuration is approved by experiments carried out over an 18.2 km FUT with the spatial resolution of 2 m.

We report the demonstration of a novel in-fiber spatially integrated Michelson interferometer based on weakly coupled multicore fiber (MCF) for vibration sensing. The compact interferometer is constructed by using two separate cores of the MCF, where the fiber end is cleaved in order to generate strong Fresnel reflection, and independent light coupling between the cores of MCF and the single mode fibers (SMFs) is enabled by the fan-in coupler. Vibration gives rise to differential strain variation between cores which results in the modification of phase difference of the interferometer. A narrow linewidth laser is employed, in order to interrogate the phase change induced reflection power variation. Vibration event can be identified and the vibration frequency can be retrieved by processing the measured reflection power with fast Fourier transform (FFT). Broad vibration frequency response range up to 12 kHz (limited by the cut-off frequency of the voltage driver of the vibration source) has been achieved. Performance of the sensor has been shown to be independent of the selection of different core pairs, where the MCF is wound to a piezoelectric transducer (PZT). The proposed in-fiber integrated spatial interferometer does not require any special processing of the fiber (e.g., tapering, splicing, and so forth). The unique sensor structure provides some extraordinary merits, including ultra-compact size, high mechanical strength, high sensitivity and temperature insensitivity.

Polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) with coherent detection is a promising low cost solution for 80 km inter-datacenter transmissions at 100 Gb/s and beyond. In this paper, three modified adaptive equalization algorithms for the PDM-PAM4 optical coherent systems, i.e. signal-phase aid least-mean-square (SP-LMS) algorithm, training multi-modulus algorithm (TMMA) and cascaded four-modulus algorithm (CMMA-4), are proposed and compared. Based on the proposed algorithms, 112 Gb/s PDM-PAM4 transmission over 80 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) in C-band for a bit error rate (BER) below 3.8e-3 is successfully demonstrated without optical amplifier, chromatic dispersion (CD) pre-compensation and extra carrier recovery operations.

We demonstrate generation and detection of 120-Gbaud PAM-4 signals using an I/Q modulator based on optical band interleaving (OBI) technique. The spectral components of target PAM signals are split and pre-processed before being sent to two digital-to-analog convertors (sub-DACs) whose outputs are imprinted to an optical carrier by an optical I/Q modulator forming a carrier-suppressed tandem single side-band (SSB) signal. The PAM signals can be recovered after photo-detection provided that an optical beating tone is added at the edge of the signal spectrum along with the modulator output. The proposed method requires only half of the Nyquist bandwidth of the target PAM signal for the transmitter and has the advantage of a simple implementation. Using Kramers-Kronig (K-K) detection, a 120 Gbaud PAM-4 transmission over 80-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) is successfully demonstrated. The proposed scheme entails a simple implementation and a much lower bandwidth requirement at the transmitter compared with conventional all-electronic high baud rate signal generation schemes.

The transmission performance of 112 Gbit/s PAM-4 signal with commercial 25 G-class EML and APD is experimentally studied by using advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, i.e. pre-equalization (Pre-EQ), error-table based pre-correction (ETC), least-mean square (LMS) based equalization, direct detection faster than Nyquist (DD-FTN) algorithm. Among them, Pre-EQ and ETC are implemented at the transmitter, and ETC is a symbol-pattern-dependent pre-compensation algorithm based on the look-up-table approach. In order to obtain these pre-compensated parameters readily, a joint equalization and error table generation (JEEG) module is proposed. Employing the combination of ETC, LMS, and DD-FTN, a single line 112 Gbit/s PAM-4 40 km amplifier-less transmission with a record receiver sensitivity of -16.6 dBm (at 7% HD-FEC threshold) is experimentally demonstrated. In addition, the computational complexities of different DSP schemes are analyzed and discussed in detail. The receiver computational complexity can be effectively reduced by employing appropriate ETC and Pre-EQ in the transmitter.

We proposed a novel torsion sensor based on inter-core mode coupling in seven-core fiber (SCF). The torsion sensor is fabricated by tapering a commercially available SCF spliced with two single mode fibers. Waist diameter and length of the taper structure were experimentally optimized to achieve good transmission spectrum. Based on this structure, the torsion measurement was conducted, and the experimental results demonstrated that the transmission spectrum shows a red shift with the fiber twist. The torsion sensitivity increases with the twisting angle, which can achieve as high as 1.00 nm/°. The direction of wavelength shift was observed to be opposite when twisting the tapered SCF in clockwise and counter-clockwise direction, demonstrating its capability to discriminate the rotation orientation. Moreover, all the measurements were repeated in attempts to confirm its stable performance as well as high accuracy. Mode coupling dynamics and theory of optical anisotropy in twisted fiber are adopted to discuss the sensitivity performance, which agrees well with experimental results. The novel torsion sensor could provide a promising candidate for the applications requiring accurate rotation.

We have experimentally analyzed and compared the performance of Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer (BOTDA) sensors assisted by non-local means (NLM) and wavelet denoising (WD) techniques in terms of measurement accuracy and experimental spatial resolution, respectively. Degradation of the measurement accuracy and experimental spatial resolution after denoising by NLM and WD are observed, which originate from the fact that higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement is achieved at the expense of sacrificing the details of BOTDA data, and smaller data sampling point number (SPN) gives rise to insufficient redundant information for denoising. The two parameters degrade to different extents depending on the amount of SNR improvement and SPN adopted in data acquisition. Compared with WD, NLM relies more on the features of the raw data, which makes its performance highly dependent on the level of neighbouring data similarity. Also, for the first time we propose and demonstrate a BOTDA assisted by advanced Block-Matching and 3D filtering (BM3D) denoising technique, which minimizes the degradation of the two parameters even under higher SNR improvement and smaller SPN. BM3D takes the advantage of NLM and WD and utilizes the spatial-domain non-local principle to enhance the denoising in the transform domain, thus it shows the least degradation of measurement accuracy/experimental spatial resolution after denoising. Thus the BOTDA assisted by BM3D maintains the best measurement accuracy/experimental spatial resolution compared with those by NLM and WD. We also show that BM3D has the advantage of temperature independent performance, unlike NLM where the accuracy is affected by the temperature value. We believe BM3D would be an excellent denoising technique for state-of-the-art BOTDA sensors. In addition, this work is also valuable for practical applications of image denoising techniques in BOTDA sensors with respect to the appropriate choice of image denoising techniques, design of SNR improvement and the adoption of SPN to maintain optimal measurement accuracy/experimental spatial resolution/data acquisition speed.

High spectral efficiency modulation format based unrepeatered transmission systems using distributed Raman amplifier (DRA) have attracted much attention recently. To enhance the reach and optimize system performance, careful design of DRA is required based on the analysis of various types of impairments and their balance. In this paper, we study various pump RIN induced distortions on high spectral efficiency modulation formats. The vector theory of both 1st and higher-order stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effect using Jones-matrix formalism is presented. The pump RIN will induce three types of distortion on high spectral efficiency signals: intensity noise stemming from SRS, phase noise stemming from cross phase modulation (XPM), and polarization crosstalk stemming from cross polarization modulation (XPolM). An analytical model for the statistical property of relative phase noise (RPN) in higher order DRA without dealing with complex vector theory is derived. The impact of pump RIN induced impairments are analyzed in polarization-multiplexed (PM)-QPSK and PM-16QAM-based unrepeatered systems simulations using 1st, 2nd and 3rd-order forward pumped Raman amplifier. It is shown that at realistic RIN levels, negligible impairments will be induced to PM-QPSK signals in 1st and 2nd order DRA, while non-negligible impairments will occur in 3rd order case. PM-16QAM signals suffer more penalties compared to PM-QPSK with the same on-off gain where both 2nd and 3rd order DRA will cause non-negligible performance degradations. We also investigate the performance of digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms to mitigate such impairments.

Discrete multi-tone (DMT) modulation is an attractive modulation format for short-reach applications to achieve the best use of available channel bandwidth and signal noise ratio (SNR). In order to realize polarization-multiplexed DMT modulation with direct detection, we derive an analytical transmission model for dual polarizations with intensity modulation and direct diction (IM-DD) in this paper. Based on the model, we propose a novel polarization-interleave-multiplexed DMT modulation with direct diction (PIM-DMT-DD) transmission system, where the polarization de-multiplexing can be achieved by using a simple multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) equalizer and the transmission performance is optimized over two distinct received polarization states to eliminate the singularity issue of MIMO demultiplexing algorithms. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed PIM-DMT-DD system are investigated via theoretical analyses and simulation studies.

We present a method to mitigate the chromatic dispersion (CD)-induced power fading effect (PFE) in high-speed and short-reach carrier-less amplitude and phase (CAP) systems using the degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) effect and a decision feedback equalizer (DFE). Theoretical and numerical investigations reveal that DFWM components produced by the interaction between the main carrier and the signal sideband help to mitigate PFE in direct detection systems. By optimizing the launch power, a maximum reach of 60 km in single mode fiber (SMF-e + ) at 1530nm is experimentally demonstrated for a 40 Gbit/s CAP32 system. In addition, we study the performance of a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) and a traditional linear equalizer (LE) in a channel with non-flat in-band frequency response. The superior PFE tolerance of DFE is experimentally validated, and thereby, the maximum reach is extended to 80 km. To the best of our knowledge, this is the twice the longest transmission distance reported so far for a single-carrier 40 Gbit/s CAP system around 1550 nm.

We propose a simple non-data-aided (or unsupervised) and universal cycle slip detection and correction (CS-DC) technique based on locating the minimum of the sliding average of twice estimated phase noise. The CS-DC can be appended to any carrier phase estimation(CPE) technique and is modulation format independent. We analytically derive the probability density function of the CS detection metric and study how the sliding window length and detection threshold affects CS detection performance. Simulation results reveal significant cycle slips reduction for various modulation formats with a residual CS probability of 2 × 10−7 for single carrier system even in unrealistic highly nonlinear system setups. In addition, we show that a second stage of CS-DC with a different sliding window length can further reduce the cycle slip probability by at least an order of magnitude. We also show that CS-DC is tolerant to inter-channel nonlinearities and residue frequency offset effects. Overall, the proposed CS-DC technique can be used in conjunction to other CS reduction techniques to maximize the ability of CS mitigation in next generation optical transceivers.
