A novel technique is proposed to process the occlusion of a background hologram when synthesizing a front scene hologram from its light field. Unlike conventional techniques which process the occlusion in the light field domain after converting the background hologram to its light field, the proposed technique directly processes the occlusion between different domains, i.e., the background hologram and foreground light field. The key idea is to consider the background hologram as a carrier wave illuminating the front scene when synthesizing the front scene hologram from its light field. The proposed technique is not only computationally efficient as it does not require conversion between the light field and hologram domains but also accurate because all angular information of the background hologram and foreground light field is naturally considered in the occlusion processing. The proposed technique was verified by numerical synthesis and reconstruction.

A bi-focal integral floating system using a geometrical phase (GP) lens can provide switchable integrated spaces with enhanced three-dimensional (3D) augmented reality (AR) depth expression. However, due to the chromatic aberration properties of the GP lens implemented for the switchable depth-floating 3D images, the floated 3D AR images with the red/green/blue (R/G/B) colors are formed at different depth locations with different magnification effects, which causes color breaking. In this paper, we propose a novel technique to resolve the color breaking problem by integrating the R/G/B elemental images with compensated depths and sizes along with experiments to demonstrate the improved results. When we evaluated the color differences of the floated 3D AR images based on CIEDE2000, the experimental results of the depth-switchable integral floating 3D AR images showed that the color accuracies were greatly improved after applying a pre-compensation scheme to the R/G/B sub-images in both concave and convex lens operation modes of the bi-focal switching GP floating lens.

A transmission-type structure based on woodpile photonic crystal layers is proposed for use in color filters. Selective bandpass filters for red, green, and blue wavelength bands are constructed using optimally designed multilayered woodpile photonic crystals. The R/G/B color filtering for a wide range of incidence angles of light is demonstrated numerically, and the operation principle and design method are described. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

A three-dimension(3D)/two-dimension(2D) convertible display system is proposed. The proposed system realizes a thin structure by adopting a pinhole array to generate point light sources for 3D display mode from a backlight source. The optical efficiency of 2D display mode is also enhanced using polarization control. By experiments, the proposed method was proven and compared with a previous one.

An improved integral imaging process is proposed that can display a depth-enhanced three-dimensional (3D) image by using two parallel-layered display devices. With the use of layered display devices, it is possible to construct 3D images on several depth planes and increase the depth remarkably. In addition, the translucent problem between 3D images was resolved for the first time to the author's knowledge by a time-multiplexing method. The proposed method was proven and compared with the conventional one by preliminary experiments.

Integral imaging has been attracting much attention recently for its several advantages such as full parallax, continuous view-points, and real-time full-color operation. However, the thickness of the displayed three-dimensional image is limited to relatively small value due to the degradation of the image resolution. In this paper, we propose a method to provide observers with enhanced perception of the depth without severe resolution degradation by the use of the birefringence of a uniaxial crystal plate. The proposed integral imaging system can display images integrated around three central depth planes by dynamically altering the polarization and controlling both elemental images and dynamic slit array mask accordingly. We explain the principle of the proposed method and verify it experimentally.

A resolution and viewing-angle enhanced integral imaging system using electrically movable pinhole array is proposed. A pinhole array on liquid crystal is adopted as dynamic pinhole array in integral imaging. The location of the pinhole array is controlled electrically. The pinhole array is expected to be moved fast enough to make an after-image effect, and the corresponding elemental images are displayed synchronously without reducing the 3D viewing aspect of the reconstructed image. With the proposed technique, the resolution and the viewing angle can be improved remarkably, and the upper resolution limit imposed by the Nyquist sampling theorem is overcome. The explanation of the proposed system is provided and the experimental results are also presented.

A wide-viewing-angle 3D/2D convertible display system with a thin structure is proposed that is able to display three-dimensional and two-dimensional images. With the use of a transparent display device in front of a conventional integral imaging system, it is possible to display planar images using the conventional system as a backlight source. By experiments, the proposed method is proven and compared with the conventional one.

We propose an enhanced three-dimensional integral imaging system using a curved lens array. Incorporation of a curved lens array instead of a conventional flat lens array expands the viewing angle remarkably. The flipped images are eliminated effectively by adopting barriers. The principle of the proposed system is explained and the experimental results are also presented.

Integral three-dimensional (3D) imaging provides full-motion parallax, unlike other conventional stereoscopy-based techniques. To maximize this advantage, a 3D system with a wide view along all directions is required. We propose and demonstrate a new integral imaging (InIm) method to enhance the viewing angle along both horizontal and vertical directions. Elemental lens switching is performed by a combination of spatial and time multiplexing by use of double display devices and orthogonal polarizations. Experimental results show that the viewing angle of the system is enhanced along all directions without any mechanical movement or any cross talk between afterimages. We believe that the proposed method has the potential to facilitate practical use of the wide-viewing InIm system.

In spite of many advantages of integral imaging, the viewing zone in which an observer can see three-dimensional images is limited within a narrow range. Here, we propose a novel method to increase the number of viewing zones by using a dynamic barrier array. We prove our idea by fabricating and locating the dynamic barrier array between a lens array and a display panel. By tilting the barrier array, it is possible to distribute images for each viewing zone. Thus, the number of viewing zones can be increased with an increment of the states of the barrier array tilt.
