Abstract

Diffuse optical tomography (DOT) is a reliable and widespread technique for monitoring qualitative changes in absorption inside highly scattering media. It has been shown, however, that acousto-optic (AO) imaging can provide significantly more qualitative information without the need for inversion algorithms due to the spatial resolution afforded by ultrasound probing. In this Letter, we show how, by using multiple-wavelength AO imaging, it is also possible to perform quantitative measurements of absorber concentration inside scattering media. Abstract

We propose an adaptive optics light-sheet fluorescence microscope (AO-LSFM) for closed-loop aberrations' correction at the emission path, providing intrinsic instrumental simplicity and high accuracy when compared to previously reported schemes. The approach is based on direct wavefront sensing, i.e., not on time-consuming iterative algorithms, and does not require the use of any guide star, thus reducing instrumental complexity and/or sample preparation constraints. The design is based on a modified Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor providing compatibility with extended sources such as images from optical sectioning microscopes. We report an AO-LSFM setup based on such sensors, including characterization of the sensor performance, and demonstrate for the first time to the best of our knowledge a significant contrast improvement on neuronal structures of the ex vivo adult drosophila brain in depth.

Abstract

International audience; Probing local displacements on a scattering surface can be achieved using an adaptive interferometer. Photorefractive-crystal based interferometer are popular, but alternatives exist, such as Adaptive Gain interferometer. Such setups take advantage of the non linear phenomena in laser media. Because of the gain saturation, it is possible to write a gain hologram and a refractive index hologram to achieve an adaptive interferometer with a linear response. In addition, laser media based setups have a fast response time (≤ 100 µs), which makes them interesting for application such as detection of photoacoustic waves in living biological samples.

Abstract

International audience; We study the potential of photoacoustic guidance for light focusing through scattering samples via wavefront-shaping and iterative optimization. We experimentally demonstrate that the focusing efficiency on an extended absorber can be improved by iterative optimization of the high frequency components of the broadband photoacous-tic signal detected with a spherically focused transducer. We demonstrate more than 12-fold increase in the photoacoustic signal generated by a 30 μm wire using a narrow frequency band around 60 MHz. By monitoring the speckle pattern evolution during the optimization process with a CCD camera, we experimentally confirm that such optimization leads to a smaller optical focus than what would be obtained by optimizing lower frequencies of the photoacoustic feedback.

Abstract

International audience; Acousto-optic imaging is a technique that maps the optical properties of thick scattering sample with a millimetric resolution. The detection of the acousto-optic signal represents a challenge because it is very weak amongst a strong parasitic signal. Various methods based on holography in photorefractive crystals or digital holography have been studied. Here dynamic holography is obtained with the gain medium Nd:YVO4. We study the experimental feasibility of a detection system based on holography in a gain media and show the first acousto-optic results obtained in a 5mm slice of chicken breast.

Abstract

We investigate the possibility of using a scattering medium as a highly multimode platform for implementing quantum walks. We demonstrate the manipulation of a single photon propagating through a strongly scattering medium using wavefront-shaping technique. Measurement of the scattering matrix allows the wavefront of the photon to be shaped to compensate the distortions induced by multiple scattering events. The photon can thus be directed coherently to a specific output mode. Using this approach, we show how entanglement of a single photon across different modes can be manipulated despite the enormous wavefront disturbance caused by the scattering medium.

Abstract

We address the problem of the transmission through subwavelength dielectric gratings. Following Maurel et al. [Phys. Rev. B 88, 115416 (2013)], the problem is reduced to the transmission by an homogeneous slab, either anisotropic (for transverse magnetic waves, TM) or isotropic (for transverse electric waves, TE), and an explicit expression of the transmission coefficient is derived. The optimum angle realizing perfect impedance matching (Brewster angle) is shown to depend on the contrasts of the dielectric layers with respect to the air. Besides, we show that the Fabry-Perot resonances may be dependent on the incident angle, in addition to the dependence on the frequency. These facts depart from the case of metallic gratings usually considered; they are confirmed experimentally both for TE and TM waves in the microwave regime.

Abstract

International audience; Acousto-optical coherence tomography (AOCT) consists in using random phase jumps on ultrasound and light to achieve a millimeter resolution when imaging thick scattering media. We combined this technique with heterodyne off-axis digital holography. Two-dimensional images of absorbing objects embedded in scattering phantoms are obtained with a good signal-to-noise ratio. We study the impact of the phase modulation characteristics on the amplitude of the acousto-optic signal and on the contrast and apparent size of the absorbing inclusion.

Abstract

International audience; We demonstrate that the reflecting properties of a single particle nanoantenna can be extremely sensitive to its distance from a quantum emitter at frequencies lower than the plasmon resonance. The phenomenon is shown to arise from rapid phase variations of the emitter field at short distances associated with a phase of the antenna particle polarizability lower than π=4.

Abstract

This work reveals an experimental microscopy acquisition scheme successfully combining Compressed Sensing (CS) and digital holography in off-axis and frequency-shifting conditions. CS is a recent data acquisition theory involving signal reconstruction from randomly undersampled measurements, exploiting the fact that most images present some compact structure and redundancy. We propose a genuine CS-based imaging scheme for sparse gradient images, acquiring a diffraction map of the optical field with holographic microscopy and recovering the signal from as little as 7% of random measurements. We report experimental results demonstrating how CS can lead to an elegant and effective way to reconstruct images, opening the door for new microscopy applications., vol 35, pp 871-873

Abstract

International audience; We study the spontaneous decay rate of a dipole emitter close to a metallic nanoparticle in the extreme near-field regime. The metal is modeled using a nonlocal dielectric function that accounts for the microscopic length scales of the free electron gas. We describe quantitatively the crossover between the macroscopic and microscopic regimes and the enhanced nonradiative decay due to microscopic interactions. Our theory is in agreement with results previously established in the asymptotic near-and far-field regimes. The controlled modification of spontaneous emission is a central issue in photonics. Modifications of the spontaneous decay rate of molecules close to metallic surfaces [1] or atoms in cavities [2] have become textbook examples. The development of nano-optics techniques has stimulated the use of metallic nanopar-ticles or tips to act on the excited-state lifetime [3], on the fluorescence intensity [3,4], and on the radiation pattern [5,6] of isolated emitters, leading to the concept of optical nanoantenna. The interplay among the enhancement of the excitation intensity, nonradiative decay, and changes in the radiation pattern [7,8] offers useful degrees of freedom. Fluorescence enhancement can be optimized for imaging applications or single photon sources, while efficient quenchers can be designed for biochemical applications [9,10]. In this Letter we study quantitatively the spontaneous decay rate of a single emitter coupled to a metallic nanoparticle, up to a regime in which the mac-roscopic description of the electrodynamics of the metal surface breaks down. This regime is expected when the distance to the metal surface is on the order of the microscopic length scales driving the electron dynamics. In this regime, the metal surface has to be described using a spatially nonlocal dielectric function. In the context of molecular fluorescence, a general formalism and the main trends have been described by Ford and Weber [11]. More recently, a giant enhancement of the nonradiative decay rate due to microscopic interactions at a plane metal surface has been predicted [12], and a simplified nonlo-cal model has been used to describe the change in the radiative and nonradiative decay rates of molecules adsorbed on small nanoparticles [13]. In the present study, we describe the full crossover between the far-field regime and the extreme near-field regime (up to physical contact) in the case of nanoparticles with size R satisfying ᐉ Ͻ R Ӷ␭, where ᐉ is the electron mean free path and ␭ is the emission wavelength. Note that this condition does not include the case of very small particles ͑R Ͻ 10 nm͒ [13,14] in which other mechanisms, such as quantum confinement, can be involved. Handling the full emitter-nanoparticle distance range requires a more sophisticated model than that used in [12,13] and allows us to determine precisely the breakdown of the macro-scopic approach, thus providing an answer to a recurrent issue in nano-optics [15]. In the weak-coupling regime, the spontaneous decay rate of a dipole emitter located at position r takes the form ⌫ = ͑2/ប͉͒p͉ 2 Im͓u · G͑r , r , ␻͒ · u͔, where p is the transition dipole, u = p / ͉p͉, and ␻ is the emission frequency [16]. The dyadic Green's function G describes the electrodynamic response of the environment. It connects an electric dipole at position r to the radiated electric field at position rЈ through the relation E͑rЈ , ␻͒ = G͑rЈ , r , ␻͒ · p. In free space, the decay rate is obtained from the vacuum Green's function and reads ⌫ 0 = ␻
