Robert Musil characterizes the moment of modernity that is the historical setting of his novel The Man without Qualities with the expression "Seinesgleichen geschieht," which he glosses by explaining that the present lacks determinacy and as a result remains unsurveyable (unübersichtlich). This characterization raises the question of how the novel is able to give rise to an understanding of the historical moment that is one object of its narration. Literature attempting to represent the un‐representable is the fundamental form of the problematic called Romanticism, which offers conceptual resources for understanding how Musil goes about narrating an unnarratable present. One of the pivots on which early German Romanticism turns away from transcendental philosophy involves assimilating the Kantian notion of "schematism" to the particular functioning of language Novalis and Schlegel call "Poesie." Schematism is also found working in the narrative technique of Musil's novel. In the sense that schematism names the inscription of relations by which, in the absence of any representable object, the world becomes the world‐for‐us and therefore intelligible, this inscription—this schematism—is the "writing" of modernity. Gegenstand dieses Beitrages sind die neuen Perspektiven, die die Annäherung der Literaturwissenschaft an die Kognitionswissenschaft für die Ausarbeitung einer kognitiven Rezeptionstheorie des literarischen Themas eröffnen kann. Die zentrale Frage, die im Beitrag beantwortet wird, ist, wie die thematische Bedeutung literarischer Texte kognitiv vom Leser generiert wird. Fokussiert wird auf die Mechanismen des menschlichen Geistes, die beim Prozess der Erschließung des literarischen Themas in der Interaktion des Lesers mit dem literarischen Text in Gang gesetzt werden. Dabei wird den Fragen nachgegangen, wie in Anbetracht der kognitiven Aktivität des Lesers das literarische Thema definiert werden kann und wie sich die Literarizität eines Themas erkennen lässt. Es wird diskutiert, wie und ob sich eine im Rahmen einer kognitiven Rezeptionstheorie anwendbare Definition von Literarizität als emergierendes Merkmal eines literarischen Themas eingrenzen lässt. Es wird die Annahme geprüft, dass das literarische Thema in der Wissensstruktur und in den Erlebnis- und Erfahrungsgehalten des Lesers verankert ist. Angestrebt wird ein Weg zur objektiven Auswertung subjektiver thematischer Interpretationen literarischer Texte. Dieser Weg wird darin gesehen, kognitive intersubjektive mentale Operationen bei der Erschließung des literarischen Themas zu isolieren. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
