The gem -difluoroalkene moiety is frequently found in medicinal chemistry. From α-keton sulfides and thioic acids, we were able to develop a universal approach for the synthesis of γ,γ-difluoroallylic ketones and δ,δ-difluoroallylic ketones via a desulfurative/defluorinative alkylation process. We expect that this mild and efficient method will be complementary to other known strategies.

Three novel BN-embedded V-shaped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with different π-conjugation lengths were designed and successfully synthesized. Their single-crystal structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis, and it is found that the molecular stacking structure can be effectively tuned by extending the length of π conjugation. Meanwhile, owing to the unique V-shaped molecular geometry, they exhibit moderate host-guest supramolecular interactions with both fullerenes C 60 and C 70 .

A bent ladder-type hexaphenylene with a carbazole core and spiro-linkage is designed and synthesized by using the ortho-linked spirobifluorene. The design eliminates the possibility of forming a positional isomer. As a blue-emitter, the BLHPC shows good thermal and color stability. A simple light-emitting device fabricated from BLHPC exhibits a maximum current efficiency of 1.46 cd/A and a maximum luminance of 505 cd/m(2).

Two trifluoromethyltriphenodioxazines were efficiently synthesized as active materials for n-type organic field-effect transistors, and their optical and electrochemical properties were characterized. Air-stable and high-performance thin film transistors based on the two compounds were fabricated.

N,N'-Bis(n-octyl)-2,3,6,7-tetrabromonaphthalene diimide (TBNDI) was synthesized by a new imidization reaction and characterized by HRMS, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, elemental analyses, FT-IR, UV-vis, and single-crystal X-ray analysis. The TBNDIs are the key precursors for the synthesis of core-tetrasubstituted-naphthalene diimides.

1,6,7,12-Tetrabromoperylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid bisanhydride and the corresponding tetrabrominated perylene bisimide were first synthesized with high yields. The Suzuki coupling reaction of novel tetrabromoperylene bisimide with phenylbonoric acid was studied. The four bromines in the bay position of the perylene core were substituted successfully to yield 1,6,7,12-teraphenylperylene bisimide. The photochemical properties of the novel perylene bisimides were studied and presented.
