This paper investigates the paleoecology of the Neogene savanna in the northern Black Sea region during the late Miocene, focusing on the " Hipparion fauna" that inhabited the area. The study explores the dietary habits of various ungulates and carnivorans through dental mesowear and microwear patterns, aiming to infer aspects of trophic interactions and ecological niches occupied by different species. The research covers three sites that span from the late Khersonian (late Tortonian; MN11) to the late Maeotian (Messinian; MN13) stages. We report catastrophic bone accumulation at the Grebeniki and Cioburciu 1 sites. Results indicate a significant dietary diversity that is challenging the traditional assumptions about the " Hipparion fauna". Rhinoceroses, specifically Chilotherium schlosseri and Aceratherium incisivum , are identified as true grazers, contradicting previous beliefs about their preference for forested or swampy ecosystems. The hipparions, traditionally considered open landscape foragers, are revealed as browsers or mixed-feeders. The study also highlights the diverse dietary traits among small antelopes, giraffids, and suids, emphasizing their adaptability to various environmental conditions. Data obtained on the hyaenid Adcrocuta eximia indicate a diet very similar to that of the bone-cracking spotted hyena. The microwear pattern of the cubs was very different from both adults and any other carnivorans used for comparison. The large felid Machairodus copei was characterized by a hypercarnivorous diet similar to lions, while smaller-size Ictitherium viverrinum was characterized by a more opportunistic feeding strategy. These findings suggest similarities and differences in feeding patterns between modern and Neogene savanna mammals. The presence of both grazing and browsing herbivores indicates a more heterogeneous landscape, with a mixture of open grasslands and denser vegetation. Additionally, the paper provides insights into the changing paleoenvironment, suggesting a transition from wooded grasslands to open landscapes during the late Miocene. A palynological record from Girraween Lagoon sediments (Darwin region of the Northern Territory, Australia) provides detailed long-term insight into tropical savanna vegetation community patterns, climatic and fire relationships, through Marine Isotope Stage 4 (MIS 4: 71–57 thousand years ago, ka) and Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3: 57–29 ka). Owing to a lack of data in reconstructing northern Australian environments, this paper looks to define and describe to a greater degree the nature and scope of these stadial and interstadial stages for the region. Girraween Lagoon simultaneously provides proximal palaeoecological data for the time and region of Aboriginal people's first arrival into Australia, also encompassing the late Pleistocene continental decline of megafauna. This study provides a dataset enabling full exploration of long-term people-landscape and faunal-floral interactions. Sea levels and associated variations imposed on the transportation of moisture and heat, held implications for MIS 4 and MIS 3 monsoon strength, which was particularly consequential for Girraween regional ecology. Results reveal a prolonged transition from wooded- to grassy-savanna, into a cool drier semi-arid savanna. A rich insect fauna is found in the Cretaceous (Aptian) Nova Olinda Member of the Crato Formation in the Araripe Basin, northeastern Brazil. The Crato Formation was deposited close to the centre of the supercontinent Gondwana, prior to significant rifting. In this paper, we analyzed remains of 1135 insect specimens, representing 55 families, within two limestone facies of the Nova Olinda Member: pale yellow and dark gray limestones. We collected taphonomical data and assessed the paleoecological significance of insect faunas in terms of their distribution and interaction with the paleoenvironment. The insect fauna is dominanted by fully terrestrial taxa despite preservation in an aquatic paleoenvironment. Considering both facies, the distribution of insect families is similar throughout the Nova Olinda Member, which excludes possible overlapping of one entomofauna over another. The pale yellow limestones near the top of the section are richer in fossil insect content and show a higher incidence of aquatic and semiaquatic insects preserved in dorsoventral view compared to the dark gray limestones. This suggests that the Crato insects preserved in the pale yellow limestones experienced short transport distances or prolonged decay or both. In contrast, insects preserved in the dark gray limestones appear proportionally with higher degrees of disarticulation than those preserved in the pale yellow limestones, indicating that these insects underwent a higher degree of postmortem transport in the biostratinomic stage. Compared to descriptions of other Early Cretaceous assemblages, the taxonomic literature of Crato Paleoentomofauna shows distinct differences. The Yixian and Zaza formations are described as being dominated by beetles and wasps. The Crato Formation, however, is relatively richer in Paleoptera species. In the comment on our paper, Prevosti et al. (2024) make a series of criticisms regarding the alleged lack of information provided on the dated samples and their geographic and stratigraphic provenance. In this contribution, we will give a reply to their comments. Our new zircon dating achieves the objective of the original study and provides valuable insights into the paleoecological dynamics of the period. Sanz-Pérez et al. (2024) recently, based on detrital zircon, presented new maximum depositional ages for several sites of the Neogene of central Argentina to constraint the age of the faunas studied with stable isotopes. Unfortunately, the precise provenance of the dated samples is not clear. In this comment, we discuss the absence of key basic information to replicate their (geochronological) study, or even to evaluate their inferences and conclusions. Without more information about the precise geographic provenance of the dated detrital zircons, and their stratigraphic position in the geological profile/schema of each locality the interpretation of the authors is not supported by the presented information. • Detrital Zircon Dates presented by Sanz-Pérez et al. The Late Pliocene fossil locality of Las Higueruelas (central Spain) has been known for many decades; however, in this paper, we describe the fauna of small-sized vertebrates (fish, amphibians, squamate reptiles, and rodents) for the first time based on pre-existing collections in the Museo Provincial de Ciudad Real. In addition to updating the taxonomical nomenclature of previously-published faunal lists, we also report the new occurrences of four fish taxa, a lizard (Lacertidae indet.), and several snakes (Malpolon gr. monspessulanus-mlynarskii , cf. Zamenis scalaris , and a large-sized indetermined viperid, probably from the Oriental vipers group or genus Daboia). The only rodent is identified as Stephanomys minor. Overall this assemblage indicates the predominance of open, dry environments and shrubby vegetation close to more grassy and riparian woodland under warm (15.1 ± 1.8 °C) and semi-arid (556 ± 40 mm) conditions. There was 4-month period of summer aridity similar to a modern Mediterranean climate. Most of the aquatic taxa (Pleurodeles , Pelophylax , and Natrix) were able to tolerate brackish environments, and the amphibians suggest the presence of deep and stable water bodies, with a long hydroperiod and aquatic vegetation, necessary for reproduction. Las Higueruelas is confirmed as being assigned to subchron 2An.1r (3.116–3.032 Ma) like the Camp dels Ninots Konservat-Lagerstätten (Girona, Spain). Palaeoclimate reconstruction for both localities is consistent with the later stages of the mid-Piacenzian Warm Period. Palaeontological comparison between the two sites may support either a small difference in age, or most probably, varied climate zonations within the Iberian Peninsula, with a north-eastern area allowing a local survival of Early Pliocene taxa that are absent from Las Higueruelas. Vertebrate teeth are highly mineralized dermal tissues composed, principally, of bioapatite making them highly resistant to physical and chemical alteration over geologic time scales. This means that the morphology and microstructure of fossil teeth is often preserved, providing diagnostic features for taxonomic classification and enabling inferences about phylogenetic relationships. They also provide abundant information about the feeding ecology of fossil taxa, including diet, feeding behavior, local resource availability, habitat structure, and climate conditions. Tooth shape, tooth wear at different scales, dental chemistry and isotopic composition, as well as ingesta particles aggregated in dental calculus comprise important clues to reconstruct the feeding ecology of a fossil species. This special issue features 21 papers that address the use of dental proxies to infer diet and related ecological habits. Among them, a first paper compares post mortem damages on enamel surfaces with dietary-related tooth wear. Then, nine papers focus on in vivo or in vitro experimentation to test specific hypotheses. Authors address questions about taphonomic processes that may blur dietary or ecological signals, the biotic and abiotic sources of the dental wear, and the calibration of models linking diet composition to dental proxies. Eight papers explore links between dental proxies and ecology and behavior in real world contexts and focus on the study of living mammals in the wild at the individual and population scales. Among those latter studies, three integrate fossil case studies. The remaining papers address questions about niche partitioning, climate effects on local resources and their use, physiology, and the influence of diet on phenotypic selection in extinct species. The earliest Cretaceous (mid-late Berriasian) tracksite Los Corrales del Pelejón is an important dinosaur trackway site in Teruel Province in Spain. The ichnoassemblage occurs in the Galve Formation (Galve sub-basin, Maestrazgo Basin) and comprises around 40 tracks assigned to theropods and ornithopods. In this paper, we undertake a paleoenvironmental analysis of the succession, which includes the overbank deposits of a fluvial environment, and discuss the implications of these findings for trackway preservation and orientation. The track-bearing unit is composed of fine- to very fine-grained, thinly bedded sandstone layers with wave ripples and traces of the Mermia ichnofacies, which were deposited as splay deposits within an ephemeral overbank pond. Two different theropod ichnotaxa (Megalosauripus cf. transjuranicus and Grallatoridae indet.) of three different size classes occur as small-, medium-, and large-sized tracks. The ornithopod tracks are classified as cf. Iguanodontipus isp. Five theropod trackways (M. cf. transjuranicus) show a bimodal orientation pattern with a similar orientation to NE-SW wave ripple crests, suggesting that these animals were walking parallel to the shoreline of the ephemeral overbank pond. Three of them walked in a similar subparallel orientation, but there is no evidence suggesting gregarious behavior as they have slightly different orientations and/or speed values. Rapid cooling during the Eocene-Oligocene transition resulted in a vegetation shift in southern France, from warm, humid vegetation to open savannah-like vegetation; however, the precise nature of this shift is uncertain. In this paper, we study the latest Eocene flora from the Saint-Chaptes and Alès basins (southern France) and compare it with other well-known southern European localities to evaluate vegetation changes near the Eocene-Oligocene boundary. Five plant communities are recognised: 1) hydrophytic vegetation dominated by water lilies and a Limnobiophyllum -like plant; 2) reeds that formed a palustrine belt around the lake; 3) ferns with Osmunda aff. parschlugiana and Pronephrium stiriacum , conifers with Doliostrobus taxiformis , a Sequoia -like plant, angiosperms with Daphnogene sp. , Byttneriopsis sp., Myrica sp., Comptonia difformis and palms, which inhabited the lake shores and constituted the riparian vegetation; 4) Tetraclinis , which grew just behind the riparian vegetation but not far from watercourses, forming open landscapes and 5) Zizyphus ziziphoides , Fabaceae, and probably Ailanthus sp. and Tetraclinis forming an open woodland distal to the lake. The flora of the Saint-Chaptes and Alès basins resembles coeval floras from Sarral (Catalonia, Spain) that are characteristic of Southern Europe, although riparian vegetation is more diverse in the Saint-Chaptes and Alès basins, and Fabaceae diversity is higher at Sarral. We hypothesise that vegetation composition was mainly controlled by (1) basin architecture, allowing for a variety of wetland habitats and (2) climate. The coexistence of genera that are restricted to Central Europe (e.g., Byttneriopsis or Doliostrobus), together with genera more typical of Southern Europe (e.g., diversity of Fabaceae, C. difformis and Z. ziziphoides) suggests that the Saint-Chaptes and Alès basins contain latest Priabonian floras that are transitional between these two regions. • Plant paleoecology at the EOT is studied in the Alès and Saint-Chaptes basins (France). • Plant communities range from lacustrine, wetlands to savannah-like woodlands. • The riparian vegetation is more diverse than in other coeval South European plant sites. • Alès and Saint-Chaptes flora shows taxa characteristic either South or Central Europe. • These plants represent a transitional flora between the two main European vegetations. The Cenomanian–Turonian is considered the warmest interval of the last 150 million years. It was characterized by major disturbances to the global carbon cycle, resulting in elevated pCO 2 levels and global temperatures, and witnessed the rise to dominance of angiosperms floras. In this paper, we assess changes of fossil floras during the Cenomanian–Turonian interval based on palynological studies of two distantly-spaced localities in high southern paleolatitudes: the Mata Amarilla Formation of Patagonia, southern South America and the Tupuangi Formation of the Chatham Islands, New Zealand. Richness estimations for each stratigraphic unit and cluster analysis were conducted to assess the vegetation changes. Palynological dominance and the presence/absence of taxa were compiled for these units and compared with others from the Cenomanian of southern Gondwana. We recognize a peak in richness during the Mid-Cenomanian Event in Patagonia, with a fall in richness after the event due to species being displaced by dominant taxa. Several richness peaks are also recognized in New Zealand, but the lack of stratigraphic control prevents correlation with marine-based events. Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 is not recorded in either study area. The inclusion of Gondwanic palynological records demonstrate that the Tupuangi Formation cluster with sites from the Antarctic Peninsula and south-eastern Australia conforming a 'polar cluster'. However, this area has its own palynological signature, constituting a newly proposed Taxodiaceaepollenites Subprovince. The abundances of key plant groups of the Mata Amarilla Formation cluster with those of Bathurst Island (northern Australia), but also show important differences, likely owing to their geographic separation and latitudinal difference. The trace fossil Paleodictyon is characterized by a regular hexagonal network and has been widely considered to be a characteristic of the Nereites ichnofacies, indicative of a deep-marine environment. Recently, however, some researchers have reported Paleodictyon occurrences in relatively shallow settings, leading to suggestions that the habitat of these burrowers was not restricted to deep-marine environments. A new occurrence of this trace fossil is presented in this study from a shallow-marine succession of Upper Cretaceous deposits in northern Japan. Paleobathymetric and temporal variations in the habitat range of shallow-marine examples of this ichnotaxon are also discussed based on a compilation of previous works. The new Paleodictyon specimens discussed here are from the lowermost part of the Mikasa Formation within the Yezo Group, interpreted as a deposit representing the lower shoreface through to the inner shelf transitional zone. This paper presents the first record of a shallow-marine Paleodictyon from the Pacific region; combined with data from previous studies, records suggest that shallow-marine Paleodictyon are observable from Paleozoic-to-Mesozoic shelf deposits, although no reliable records of their occurrences have so far been reported from the Cenozoic. Increasing bioturbation intensity and predation pressure during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic may have been significant factors preventing the preservation of this ichnogenus in post-Mesozoic shallow-marine settings. The Paleodictyon -bearing interval of the Mikasa Formation also preserves evidence for low-intensity bioturbation, which may account for preservation of the traces in this case. This paper presents the Miocene squirrels of the Linxia Basin in Gansu Province, and a paleoenvironmental and palaeoecological analysis based on the remains collected recently by screen-washing nine localities of early to late Miocene age. The assemblages contain 12 sciurid species (nine genera, three subfamilies), including squirrels with different adaptations, predominantly ground squirrels and chipmunks. Our analysis suggests that Miocene squirrels in Linxia reflect a relatively dry climate and open shrub-steppe environment, and favorable dispersal across Eurasia. The Linxia Miocene squirrels show close taxonomic composition with contemporary faunas known from the Mongol-Xinjiang highland and adjacent regions, implying that northern China represents a single biotic province with uniform paleoenvironment. In addition, the Linxia squirrels are quite different from those found in Yunnan in southern China, which are dominantly tree and flying squirrels that suggest a humid forest biotope. The differences in distribution indicate that Miocene squirrel faunas of China showed distinct provinciality and latitudinal ecological variation. Fossil bovids are key components of the Neogene mammal faunas in Eurasia, showing high diversity and rapid rates of evolution, with important implications for biostratigraphy and understanding past climate change. The Linxia Basin (Gansu Province, China) contains rich Miocene to Early Pleistocene bovid assemblages that provide an opportunity to study the evolution of this group. This paper reviews the fossil record of bovids in the Linxia Basin, which comprises more than 20 genera within seven tribes, spanning nine stratigraphic horizons and distributed across 43 fossil localities. Findings show that the diversity of fossil bovids in the Linxia Basin increased dramatically from the Early to Late Miocene but fell suddenly at the end of the Late Miocene before reaching a second peak in the Early Pleistocene. The Late Miocene mammal assemblages from the Linxia Basin may indicate somewhat younger age than previously thought based on fossil bovid comparisons. With diverse species and rich material, the bovids of the Linxia Basin present an excellent opportunity for further studies on morphology and adaptations within the group. • Linxia fossil bovids from 9 fossiliferous layers comprise over 20 genera (7 tribes). • The Linxia Dashengou Fauna shares similar bovids with Lamagou and Bahe. • Yangjiashan Fauna shares bovids with the Hipparion faunas of Baode and Qingyang. • There is chronological overlap of some faunas. This study aims to quantify the intensity and diversity of plant-insect associations observed in the fossil assemblage of Gelinden, Limburg, Belgium. The site yields a rich collection of well-preserved plant remains, mainly leaves, from a Paleocene European temperate forest. The 780 specimens presented here were scanned using standardized morphotype systems for any trace of damage. This raw data was then used to quantify the intensity and diversity of interactions in the Gelinden flora. This material showed an impressive richness of interactions, contrasting with the poor North American sites covering the period that followed the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction. Both hosts and interaction types observed at Gelinden are two to three times more abundant than in most American floras, in raw numbers and leaf area affected. This is coherent with what has been observed in the few other studies conducted in Europe, South America and Antarctica, pointing toward more regionalized effects of the extinction than previously assumed based on American findings. This greater richness implies that these sites were either less affected or quicker to recover from the Cretaceous/Paleogene extinction, questioning its global impact, at least on the lower levels of the food web, as discussed in the following paper. • We provide quantitative data on plant-insect interactions observed in the Gelinden flora. • One of the few such study on a European locality. • Higher richness compared to similar age North American localities. • Supporting conclusion drawn from previous studies in France and South America. • Recovery from the K-Pg extinction was probably more regionalised than previously assumed. Aferdou el Mrakib, the largest carbonate buildup of the Moroccan Anti-Atlas, is known for its rich, Givetian fossil assemblage, dominated by corals. The core part of the reef was either removed by erosion, or pervasively dolomitised, with corals preserved mostly in the talus beds deposited in the fore-reef environment. This paper focuses on massive colonial tabulate corals, represented by Heliolites porosus and members of the genus Favosites , which constituted the largest tabulates of Aferdou el Mrakib and are frequently found in the reef-derived debris. The study reconstructs survival strategies of these corals based on an analysis of their morphologies, growth patterns, as well as records of interactions with other organisms. Both H . porosus and Favosites are represented predominantly by domal growth forms. As compared to the favositids, the coralla of H . porosus are considerably more abundant and attained notably larger sizes, with some of the colonies exceeding 1 m in diameter. Even the largest coralla were in places found toppled and in upside-down positions, indicating their downslope transportation by gravity flows, and possible periodic involvement of high energy events. H . porosus commonly encrusted and was encrusted by other organisms. The encrustations usually coincide with very frequent, sediment-induced growth interruption surfaces found within the coralla. The growth interruption surfaces rarely preserve the original sediment, attesting the presence of mechanisms of sediment removal by the coral. Similar surfaces occur also in the Favosites coralla, but they are less common and often lined by distinct sediment intercalations. Few encrustations on Favosites were demonstrated to have happened post-mortem, while encrustations on H . porosus typically formed syn -vivo, as evidenced by the coral successfully overgrowing its epibionts. H . porosus was a resistant species, which could endure frequent episodes of sediment influx and defend itself from aggressive encrusters. Favosites colonies, in turn, relied on selective settlement on more sparsely occupied substrates available in deeper parts of the Aferdou el Mrakib reef. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Middle and Upper Jurassic stage of evolution of the anaptychus-type ammonoid jaw apparatus is relatively poorly known due to a small number of findings and uncertainty of their taxonomic position. All previously found anaptychi of this age are preserved either in flattened and dissolved shells or separately from ammonoid conchs. Rhynchaptychus-type jaws were still hitherto unknown from Jurassic deposits. In this paper we describe three-dimensionally preserved ammonoid lower jaws from the Bajocian/Bathonian boundary (Middle Jurassic) beds of Dagestan, Russia. These findings demonstrate a wide variety of their shape and structure. One specimen, consisting only of organic matter which is considered as anaptychus sensu stricto , is located in situ in the body chamber of Lytoceras ( Dinolytoceras ) zhivagoi (Besnosov). Three specimens which likely belonged to any Phylloceratiadae ( Adabofoloceras , Holcophylloceras , or Pseudophylloceras which are presented in the ammonoid assemblage) contain prominent calcareous conchorhynchs, and the outer organic lamellae of these jaws were initially covered with a thin calcareous layer. The last lower jaw, probably from Nannolytocera s, has also a small calcareous conchorhynch in its tip despite a lack of coating. These findings are the first direct evidence of the existence of rhynchaptychus-type lower jaws in the Middle Jurassic. We present and appraise a large compilation of peatland palaeoecological research in Great Britain, and discuss the value of these data for secondary analysis. We identify 475 radiocarbon-dated palaeoecological records from British peatlands published since 1970. Peatland palaeoecological research has been widespread but with some clear spatial biases reflecting factors such as accessibility and the location and interests of active researchers. We show that basic details such as stratigraphic descriptions, site coordinates and full details of radiocarbon dates are omitted from publications with surprising frequency and note the large quantity of data that only ever appears in PhD theses. To allow papers to remain concise while presenting essential background information we propose a system of standardised meta-data in online supplementary material. The extensive body of palaeoecological data for British peatlands has been relatively unexploited. The compilation we present will be a valuable aid in making better use of this data resource. The summits of the tepuis (sandstone table mountains of the Neotropical Guayana region—Guayana Highlands, GH) have been considered valuable for palaeoecological studies due to their pristine nature, which emphasizes the role of natural (i.e. non-human) factors on ecological change. Anthropogenic fires, very frequent in the surrounding Gran Sabana (GS) uplands, have very rarely been documented in the GH, and are therefore not considered an important ecological factor in the high-tepui biome. This paper reports the palynological and charcoal results of a Late Holocene sequence from the summit of Uei-tepui (2104 m elevation), where extensive signs of fire were recently observed. Since ~ 2000 cal yr BP, the landscape of the study site has been dominated by meadows with occasional shrubs and cloud forests, which underwent expansions and contractions driven by climate changes and fire. A major vegetation shift occurred in the mid-18th century, when a sustained increase in local fires favoured the expansion of the low and spreading Cyrilla racemiflora shrublands at the expense of meadows and forests. Uei-tepui fires most probably were the result of human activities and reached the summit under study from the GS uplands through the vegetated slopes that characterize this tepui. The mostly anthropogenic nature of these fires, especially the more recent ones, is supported by the initial occurrence of wetter conditions, and by its coincidence with significant social changes in the GS indigenous populations, mainly the European contact. The emergence of fire as a disturbing agent of the GH biome highlights the need for an effective management plan in the GS uplands, where the vast majority of present-day fires originate, and designed in collaboration with the indigenous communities. The sedimentary record of fossil coastal lagoons is an under-explored archive of environmental change in ancient coastal domains. The significant continentality of coastal lagoons, the small volumes of their water bodies, very shallow depths and intermittent connectivity to oceanic aquafacies all result in a highly complex depositional system. The matrix micrite chemostratigraphy (carbon and oxygen isotope ratios) of two mid-Cenomanian shallow coastal lagoon sections in the western Lusitanian Basin, Portugal, are here presented in comparison to the geochemistry of different diagenetic carbonate materials. Geochemical evidence is placed against independent data from field observations, sedimentology, microfacies analysis, and ostracod palaeoecology. Marine ingressions and coastal lagoonal environments are recorded both in sedimentological, micropalaeontological and geochemical data sets. Intervals of more open, marine conditions are evidenced by overall higher (0 to 2‰) carbon and less 18 O-depleted (− 3‰) isotope ratios. The opposing pattern is observed for periods of more restricted lagoonal conditions. The combination of a detailed ostracod palaeoecology with geochemical and sedimentological findings is considered a strength of this paper as it allowed to disentangle the complex geochemical signals of ancient coastal lagoonal deposits. Community level ecology is considered to support significantly the recognition of the ecological status of plant taxa and the identification of plant ecogroups, thus it generally provides extended data sets on the spatial and temporal changes of ecological factors. Since research based exclusively on plant structure and their supposed adaptation to the environment is now considered inadequate, statistical methods can be used. Assuming that co-occurrence of plant fossils on a single hand specimen in the case of autochthonous or parautochthonous floras is the result of their growth in the same phytocenosis, quantitative ecological analysis on Mesozoic materials would yield significant insights. In this paper, statistical and multivariate quantitative analyses of Early Jurassic plant fossil records from the Steierdorf Formation in Anina (South Carpathians, Romania) are presented. Four palaeoecological groups of taxa were distinguished by principal component analysis (PCA) and interpreted as plant assemblages of various palaeobiotopes associated with the sedimentary facies of the enclosing formation. A group of samples was analysed using the principal coordinate (PCO) method and the statistical significance ( p {less than or equal to} 0.05) ( p ≤ 0.05) of individual binary responses of taxa along the first two PCO ordination axes was tested by general linear model (GLM). They revealed putative palaeoecological gradients: axis 1 – disturbance caused by water level fluctuations, axis 2 – temperature, corresponding with the already assumed environmental and climatic change at the Hettangian/Sinemurian boundary. In this paper, we analyse the upper Barremian-lowermost Aptian Alacón Formation (Oliete subbasin, Maestrazgo Basin) of Spain to understand the progressive opening of a shallow-marine bay found on the northeastern margin of Iberia. The succession consists of four transgressive-regressive sequences (S1S4) bounded by widespread unconformities caused by rapid base-level fall. The transgressive interval of each sequence is characterized by relatively high detrital input and fresh-water inflow that caused the demise of shallow-marine benthic communities. The regressive interval of each sequence triggered progressive regeneration of the benthic carbonate producers. Sequences 1 and 2 consist of lacustrine to restricted shallow-marine facies, followed by accumulations of the gryphaeid oyster Ceratostreon , with progressive colonization of the bay by marine benthic communities subjected to frequent salinity oscillations. Sequences 3 and 4 represent the stabilization of open-marine conditions in the bay with widespread development of high-energy bioclastic tidal dunes. The long-term transgression around the Barremian-Aptian boundary, which gave rise to the progressive flooding of the Oliete bay, was episodically interrupted by shorter-term episodes of abrupt base-level fall, with the eventual subaerial exposure of the entire bay at the end of the deposition of the Alacón Formation. Our data suggest that the observed sequence architecture was mostly controlled by climatic and eustatic sea-level oscillations, with local synsedimentary tectonics having a minor impact. Pollen analysis provides a key technique for the reconstruction of post-glacial vegetation. Modern observation of the plant-pollen relationship, through the use of surface pollen studies, is an instrumental process for informing these reconstructions. However, results from surface pollen studies suggest that the diversity of pollen assemblages is rarely a faithful representation of the diversity of the local vegetation. Pollen diversity at high altitude is determined by both the composition and density of the local vegetation and long-distance pollen. This paper examines the relationship between floristic and palynological diversity using surface samples collected from alpine communities found on three glacier forelands (Austerdalsbreen, Storbreen and Grjøtbreen) in the Jostedalsbreen-Jotunheimen region of Norway. Several diversity indices indicate the complexity of the relationship between palynological and floristic diversity. This is accentuated in open, high altitude, sparsely-vegetated sites, where palynological diversity is a measure of the diversity of the long-distance pollen assemblage rather than the diversity of the local vegetation. Even at sites on older moraines at Storbreen and Austerdalsbreen, where the vegetation is denser and more diverse, the relationship is not simple but depends on pollen production of the taxa that dominate the local vegetation. On Storbreen foreland, for example, the diversity of small, insect-pollinated plants growing locally is poorly represented in the pollen assemblage which is dominated by long-distance arboreal pollen. The surface pollen results were compared with fossil pollen data from a palaeosol at Memurubreen in Eastern Jotunheimen. DCA ordination indicates that the fossil pollen spectra are distinct from the modern samples, due to differences in the pollen assemblages, probably related to lower treelines in the past associated with climatic cooling or human impact. The palaeosol samples are most similar to modern samples from heath and snowbed communities, found on older terrain at Grjøtbreen and Storbreen, and the diversity indices also show strong similarities with these communities. El Salt is an important reference site for understanding the extinction of Neanderthal populations in the eastern Iberian Peninsula during MIS 3. In this paper, we describe the small mammal assemblage from Stratigraphic Unit V, the youngest unit with evidence of human presence, based on nearly 1300 specimens. A total of seven rodents (Microtus arvalis , Microtus duodecimcostatus , Microtus cabrerae , Sciurus vulgaris , Arvicola sapidus , Eliomys quercinus and Apodemus sylvaticus), three insectivores (Talpa occidentalis , Crocidura sp., Sorex sp.) and one lagomorph (Oryctolagus cf. cuniculus) were identified. Palaeocological analyses point to drier conditions in this part of the stratigraphic sequence, supporting the hypothesis that an aridification scenario may have played a role in the extinction of the Neanderthal groups inhabiting this region of the Iberian Peninsula. Tetrapod ichnology is a powerful tool to reconstruct the faunal composition of Middle Triassic ecosystems. However, reconstructions based on a single palaeoenvironment provide an incomplete and impoverished picture of the actual palaeodiversity. In this paper, we analyse Middle Triassic tetrapod ichnoassociations from the detrital Muschelkalk facies of the Catalan Basin of northeast Spain, ranging from terrestrial to coastal settings. We identified two main tetrapod ichnoassociations, preserved in two different palaeoenvironments, comprising the following ichnogenera and morphotypes: Procolophonichnium , Chelonipus, Rhynchosauroides , Rotodactylus , Chirotherium , Isochirotherium , Sphingopus , and indeterminate chirotheriids. We also statistically analyse a database of all known Middle Triassic tetrapod footprint localities worldwide; this database includes, for each track locality, the precise age, the palaeoenvironment and the presence/absence of ichnotaxa. Our results on the composition of ichnofauna within the palaeoenvironments of the Catalan Basin are integrated into this database. This approach allows us to revisit the palaeoenvironmental bias linked to the marine transgression that affected the Western Tethys region. Tetrapod ichnoassociations reveal the following palaeoenvironmental patterns: (1) in coastal settings, ichnoassociations are Rhynchosauroides -dominated and diversity is relatively low; (2) in terrestrial settings and those with less marine influences, ichnoassociations are non- Rhynchosauroides -dominated, usually characterised by more abundant chirotheriid tracks and, generally, a higher track diversity. The correlation between tetrapod ichnoassociations and sedimentary facies reveals how palaeoenvironmental constraints influenced faunal assemblages, especially those of the Middle Triassic of the Western Tethys region. Ichnoassociations allow the ecological response of tetrapod faunas to the environmental changes to be inferred for this critical time interval. We analyse the evolution of carnivoran guilds (body mass, locomotor pattern, and diet preference) across the Middle to Upper Miocene boundary based on a comparison of the carnivoran fauna from Steinheim (Mammal Neogene zone MN 7/8; Servallian to early Tortonian), and from the Eppelsheim Formation (Mammal Neogene zone MN 9/10; mid-Tortonian), Germany. Results reveal a massive faunal turnover between these two communties due to taxonomic differences up to the family level. Guild structures of both carnivoran faunas were similar, implying that Late Miocene taxa replaced Middle Miocene taxa in their respective niches rather than new ecological strategies being added to the guild. This is not surprising, as (1) the majority of Late Miocene taxa were derived from European Middle Miocene ancestors and mostly share their paleoecology, (2) of the few undisputed Late Miocene immigrant taxa (Eomellivora , Simocyon , Sivaonyx), only Eomellivora adds new ecological strategies to the guild, and (3) both faunas occupied the same kind of partly open woodland paleoenvironment. Our paper supports previous studies, suggesting that ecological diversity remains stable across the Middle to Upper Miocene boundary and that similar environments produce similar carnivoran guild structures irrespective of taxonomical composition. • The carnivoran fauna from the Eppelsheim Formation (MN 9/10) includes 18 taxa. • A guild analysis reveals presence of 14 different niches. • Strong taxonomic and little guild difference to carnivorans of Steinheim (MN 7/8). • The ecological turnover of carnivore guild structures took place after MN 10. The paper reports rare occurrence of deep-water solemyid and lucinid bivalves from Cenozoic sequences of Outer Eastern Carpathians, Ukraine. The studied bivalves occur in the Eocene Pasichna Formation, represented by deep-water marls and pelagic limestones intercalated with thin-bedded calcareous sandstones yielding material re-deposited from shallow water. This find offered a chance to study the unaltered shell breakage pattern of these deep-burrowing solemyid bivalves buried in situ by turbidites. The breakage includes arcuate breaks representing likely syn-vivo damage related to active burrowing of the animal while telescopic breaks are most likely post-mortem distortions produced by the load of the heavy sediment covering sea bottom after a turbiditic event. Taxonomic study indicates that both solemyid and lucinid bivalves from the Eocene of the Pasichna Formation are most similar to deep-water members of their respective clades, known from roughly coeval deposits from the Tethys. The available evidence indicates that bivalves in question lived on the deep-sea muddy bottom, influenced by turbidite deposits, and were buried by them syn-vivo or early post-mortem. This is in contrast to the great majority of molluskan faunas from the Carpathian Paleogene, reworked during transport downbasin from shallow-marine settings by mass gravity flows. The detailed study of the occurrence mode of deep-water bivalves in the Carpathian part of the Tethys during the Paleogene, influenced by frequent build-up of oxygen-depleted waters, offers implications for the evolutionary histories of both groups in question. For both solemyids and lucinids, adaptations to oxygen-depleted environments are primordial, and are carried from the Silurian until today, as supported by the presented fossil and actualistic evidence. The proboscidean Notiomastodon platensis is widely recognized in the Pleistocene of Brazil, but direct evidence for its feeding behavior is scant. In this paper, we report palynological assemblages preserved in dental calculi to infer dietary preferences and habitats. Molar specimens (m1 and M3/m3) with significant calculus accumulation were examined from localities along the Coastal Plain (CPRS) and the Campanha region (western state in Pampa biome) in Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil. Palynomorphs obtained from calculus were identified with light microscopy, and we applied species distribution modelling (SDM) for arboreal/shrub pollen taxa to investigate the environmental contexts for proboscideans during the Last Interglacial (LIG, 120 ka BP) and Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 21 ka BP). Pollen assemblages indicate a generalist diet for N. platensis , and corroborate previous paleoecological studies. N. platensis from CPRS showed two patterns: the subadult individual was a specialized browser in wooded habitats, inferred from pollen taxa dominated by arboreal species (mainly Myrtaceae), while mature/senile adult individuals were dominantly grazers to mixed-feeders in open habitats inferred from herbaceous pollen (mainly Cyperaceae) mixed with woody elements. For the Campanha region, diet interpretation is difficult due to the absence of pollen; however, Poaceae phytoliths indicate that grasses may have been important food items, notably pooid C 3 grasses. N. platensis potentially accessed a more heterogeneous environment with mixed open grasslands and forests around the LIG interval because of the larger extension of forest at the time. Phytolith analysis, a well-established tool in archaeology and Quaternary paleoecology, has become a source of data for deep-time paleoecological studies only in the last 15 years. Recent years have also witnessed the publication of numerous soil phytolith inventories from extant vegetation types, representing modern analogues. However, this work suffers from several methodological shortcomings limiting inter-study comparisons, and the development of a single, and repeatable protocol for soil sample collection. In this paper, we focus on two fundamental methodological questions that must be answered before modern analogue studies can be meaningfully applied to deep-time paleoecology. (1) Do phytoliths from the lower portion of the A-horizon (more commonly preserved in paleosols) reflect standing vegetation equally well as the upper A-horizon (which is more commonly used in modern analogue studies but often truncated by erosion in paleosols)? (2) Does a point soil sample (usually collected from paleosols) capture standing vegetation as accurately as a composite soil sample (commonly used in modern analogue studies), which is made from subsamples taken from a small area? To address these questions, we collected soil from 10 × 10 m quadrats in a rainforest (La Selva) and a dry forest (Palo Verde) in Costa Rica and compared phytolith assemblages from upper vs. lower soil A-horizons, and composites vs. single phytolith assemblages. At both sites, phytolith assemblages from the lower vs. upper A-horizon, and from single vs. composite samples provide similar vegetation structure signal despite some compositional differences. These results suggest that the typical approach in deep-time paleoecology of taking point samples from the lower A-horizon of paleosols is likely justifiable (at least for paleosols reflecting rainforest and dry forest soils). After the end-Permian mass extinction (EPME), the marine environment was considered extremely toxic, mainly due to anoxic and high-temperature conditions and ocean acidification; consequently, the ecosystem contained few organisms. This paper describes a new ostracod fauna from the microbialite-bearing Permian-Triassic (P-Tr) strata at Zuodeng, Guangxi region, China. One thousand and seventy ostracod specimens were extracted from forty-eight samples. Fifty-three species belonging to fourteen genera were identified. Ostracods, primarily from the family Bairdiidae, were extremely abundant in the microbialites, which suggests that ostracods were opportunists that could survive the EPME within this special microbial ecosystem with sufficient food and scarce competitors and predators rather than undergoing a rapid and early recovery after the EPME event. Ostracods having simultaneous Paleozoic and Meso-Cenozoic affinities coexisted in this fauna. The similarities and differences among the ostracod faunas in the microbialite sections of the P-Tr boundary around the Paleo-Tethys indicate that there was a long-distance dispersal of ostracods, but the faunas maintained endemism at the species level. Previous studies have regarded microbialites as whole units, and it is difficult to detect environmental changes within a microbialite interval based on paleoecological groups of (super)families. In this study, high-resolution sampling was applied to identify changes in the ostracod abundance, diversity, assemblages and proportion of five dominant species in the section, which exhibited an evolutionary trend from the " Bairdia " group to the " Liuzhinia antalyaensis - Bairdiacypris ottomanensis " group. Geographically isolated insular species face energetic restrictions and commonly evolve adaptations that distinguish them from their mainland ancestors. During the Pleistocene, several Mediterranean islands were inhabited by now extinct Hippopotamidae. They underwent diverse changes in locomotion, dentition and body size. Based on these differences, it is supposed that they occupied different ecological niches depending on their respective faunal complexes and available resources. In this paper, we assess the paleoecology of dwarfed hippopotami from Crete, Malta, Sicily and Cyprus using a novel dental multiproxy approach. We applied dental topography analysis (SAGA-GIS) to measure the mean slope of the dental occlusal surface, mirroring dietary adaptations, as well as 3D surface texture analysis (3DST) to quantify the surface of occlusal wear facets, which correlate with dietary abrasiveness. Low slope values were found in the larger, more hypsodont hippopotami, whilst the smaller Phanourios minor displayed the highest occlusal relief with large compression basins. Since Hippopotamus pentlandi exhibited lower mean slope values than the larger, more hypsodont Hippopotamus amphibius , we conclude that lower occlusal reliefs reflect adaptations to lower diet quality and arid environments, which are characteristic of freshwater-limited island habitats. The 3DST analysis revealed distinct ecological niches for the investigated insular hippos. Hippopotamus creutzburgi exhibited enamel surface textures analogous to those of Hippopotamus amphibius , a fresh grass grazer, thus confirming a semiaquatic lifestyle at the upland lake at Katharo, Crete. Hippopotamus pentlandi was bound to a similar niche to the extant form, probably due to the mainland character of its fauna, but experienced more dust intake. Hippopotamus melitensis had to cope with high ingestion of abrasives, seemingly on account of a more generalistic diet in its resource-limited and small habitat. Results point to either Phanourios minor broadening its dietary niche in its almost competition-free habitat, or suggest a dietary shift following a climatic change.
