A comprehensive study of the sediment source-to-sink history of basins arranged along the Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone (BNSZ) is critical for understanding the early Cenozoic topography and drainage systems of central Tibet and its implications for the uplift history of the Tibetan Plateau. Nevertheless, previous provenance analyses work mainly focused on the middle-eastern segment of the BNSZ, those Paleogene basins in the western segment have received less attention, which hinders a full understanding of the early Cenozoic topography of central Tibet. In this study, based on a chronostratigraphic framework developed for the lower Cenozoic continental redbeds of the Gaize Basin, we applied detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology to the well-exposed Paleogene Suonahu Formation in order to reconstruct the basin's source-to-sink history. Integrating these new data with detrital zircon U-Pb results from the underlying Kangtuo Formation, we recognize a major secular shift in sediment provenance characterized by inputs of Lhasa-derived clasts during the Late Eocene. Moreover, we applied statistical analysis to compare the U-Pb age spectra of Eocene strata in the Gaize-Nima-Lunpola basins in order to assess similarities between them and potential source regions. Abstract In this study, the development of the north-eastern Tibetan Plateau is investigated via an integrated study of the sedimentology, magnetostratigraphy, palaeogeography, and cross-section comparisons of the Neogene sedimentary basins of the Tibetan Plateau. From 23 to 17 Ma, this region was characterized by widespread angular unconformities and a sedimentary hiatus, indicating the comprehensive uplift of the plateau. The tectonic event that created the Tibetan Plateau triggered the evolution of sedimentary basins. During the Middle Miocene climatic optimum event, the growing Qilian Shan formed a barrier, leading to cooler and drier conditions on the western side of the mountain. However, humid and warm conditions persisted on the eastern side of the range. After this event, this region was influenced by a global cooling trend and enhanced tectonic activity in the north-eastern Tibetan Plateau. At approximately 10–8 Ma, sedimentary data, which were consistent with low-temperature thermochronological records, indicated the inversion of the surrounding mountains and rapid exhumation of the Laji Shan. Since 5.0–3.6 Ma, these intermontane basins gradually shrank and disappeared due to the overall uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and the accelerated global cooling trend and were associated with unconformities and growth strata that formed during stepwise-north-eastward thrusting tectonism. Abstract As an important geological archive, paleosols have been widely used in reconstruction of paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic conditions. In this study, we undertook detailed analyses of the clay mineralogy and carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of pedogenic carbonates in a series of 13 paleosol horizons within a fluvial section of the Eocene (~52–44 Ma) Lulehe Formation in the Qaidam Basin. Pedogenic smectite and illite/smectite (I/S) mixed-layer minerals are the predominant clay minerals in the paleosols, suggesting that the early Eocene paleoclimate of the Qaidam Basin was strongly seasonal with warm-wet summers. The high levels of pedogenic smectite production and high atmospheric p CO 2 reconstructed from soil carbonate nodule δ13C (mean −7.1 ± 0.8‰) are consistent with elevated temperatures during the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum (EECO). Coeval paleosol carbonate nodules yield estimated paleo-surface water compositions (δ18O psw) of −7.9‰ to −6.0‰ (VSMOW), which are significantly higher than the δ18O value of modern summer precipitation in the Qaidam Basin. The estimated temperature difference (~5.0 °C cooling) implies uplift of the study area by nearly 1000 m to its current average elevation of ~3000 m above sea level. This paleoelevation estimate agrees with modern meteoric water isotopes of Global Network of Isotopes in Precipitation (GNIP) sites in Asia in the same elevation range. Abstract The southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is a key region for understanding the region's surface uplift mechanisms. This study focused on the Jiuziyan and Shuanghe Formations (Fms) in the Jianchuan Basin, both of which include lacustrine calcareous mudstones and marls. Ostracods of the genus Austrocypris found within the Jiuziyan and Shuanghe Fms constrain the age of strata to the Late Eocene. This study used two different proxies, i.e. fossil pollen coexistence and the δ18O (VPDB) values of carbonate (δ18O c), to reconstruct paleoelevation and the extant paleoenvironment from lacustrine calcareous mudstones and marls preserved in the Eocene stratigraphy of the Jianchuan Basin. The coexistence approach (CA) using pollen data from the Shuanghe Fm indicates a paleoelevation of 1.3–2.6 km above sea level (asl), which would most probably have been associated with a vegetation cover consisting of tropical-subtropical, deciduous, coniferous, broadleaf forests. The reconstructed mean annual air temperature (MAAT) had a value of 16.8–21.7 °C, warmer than today's MAAT (~6 °C). Oxygen isotope results from the Jiuziyan Fm, with/without modification between Eocene and modern Myanmar sea level, suggested that the surface of the Jianchuan Basin was at a paleoelevation between 0.5+0.8 –0.5 km asl and 2.5 ± 0.7 km asl (δ18O mw : −8.9 ± 1.3‰, 2σ). During the Shuanghe Fm sedimentation the paleoelevation was between 0.9 +0.7 –0.7 km asl and 2.9 ± 0.6 km asl (δ18O mw : −9.5 ± 1.1‰, 2σ). Our results suggest that a stepwise uplift of Jianchuan Basin and crustal thickening initiated during the Eocene was the cause of passive surface uplift of the southeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) rather than Miocene lower crustal flow. The Beishan Orogen, located in the southernmost Central Asian Orogenic Belt, is a key area for research on accretionary orogens. The formation of the Beishan Orogen is closely related to the evolution of the Paleo-Asian Ocean, but the closure time of a significant branch of the Paleo-Asian Ocean in the Beishan area, i.e., the Hongliuhe–Niujuanzi–Xichangjing (HNX) Ocean, remains controversial. This study investigates the sedimentary sequences of Baihu Basin adjacent to the HNX suture zone and presents new detrital zircon U Pb geochronology and whole-rock geochemistry data to reveal depositional ages, provenance variations, paleogeography changes and attributes of Baihu Basin. Detrital zircon ages indicate that deposition began in the Permian and lasted until the Triassic. Two coarse sandstones in Member 1 and one siltstone in Member 2 contain abundant detrital zircons older than 700 Ma, in addition to the typical age peak that characterises the Gongpoquan Arc at ca. 450 Ma, while two sandstones in Member 3 contain rare detrital zircons older than 700 Ma. The whole-rock geochemistry shows that the lower part of the Hongyanjing Formation possesses numerous old components and higher chemical index of alteration values. The sediment in the lower part of the Hongyanjing Formation was derived from both the Gongpoquan Arc, mainly comprising Palaeozoic arc-related magmatic rocks, and the Shuangyingshan Arc, including large quantities of Precambrian meta-sedimentary rocks. The upper part originated solely from the juvenile Gongpoquan Arc. During the collision, the Shuangyingshan Arc played a role similar to a craton. Craton-derived source rocks and fining-upward sequences in the lower part indicate uplift of the Shuangyingshan Arc, which may represent the development of a forebulge and foredeep. In the upper part, the source rocks were derived from the Gongpoquan Arc and accretionary wedges, with coarsening-upward sequences reflecting the springback of the Shuangyingshan Arc and disappearance of the forebulge. Based on the sedimentary sequences, provenance variations, and paleogeographic changes, we suggest that Baihu Basin is a foreland basin associated with the collision between the Gongpoquan Arc and Shuangyingshan Arc, marking the final closure of the HNX Ocean from the Late Permian to Early Triassic. Determining the provenance of Cenozoic strata in the Qaidam Basin is key to understanding the basin-mountain coupling history in the northern Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, the specific source areas of Cenozoic strata in the northern Qaidam Basin remain highly debated. Here, we combine analyses of detrital zircons U Pb geochronology for recent and ancient fluvial sediments from the northern Qaidam Basin to trace source areas of Cenozoic strata and reconstruct related mountain-building processes. The results indicate that the diagnostic 270–240 Ma zircon U Pb peak, which was previously recognized as the unique input of a southern source area, is widespread in the recent fluvial sediments of the northern Qaidam Basin. Given our new zircon U Pb data, the source-to-sink transport processes of Cenozoic sediments in the northern Qaidam Basin can be summarized as follows. (1) The northern Qaidam Basin has received the eroded detrital material from a dominantly northern source throughout the Cenozoic. (2) The Qaidam BeiShan was uplifted already at least by the early Eocene and served as the single contributor of detritus to the Dahonggou (DHG) region, suggesting that far-field stress due to the India-Asia collision had been propagated to this region as early as the early Eocene. (3) An abrupt change in provenance is observed in the DHG region during 46.5–43.7 Ma. We interpret this middle Eocene source change as reflecting the onset of growth of the North Altyn Tagh Range, implying that the North Altyn Tagh Range was already serving as an important source area for the DHG region by the middle Eocene. (4) The South Qilian Range served again as the dominant source area for the DHG region after 24.6 Ma. Abstract The Lhasa terrane is thought to be a key region for understanding the elevation history of the southern Tibetan Plateau after collision of continental India and Asia in early Paleocene. Stable isotopic studies consistently suggest that the Lhasa terrane had reached its near-present elevation before the Miocene. In this paper we report a plant megafossil assemblage from the Kailas Formation of the Kailas Basin in western part of the southern Lhasa terrane. Our U-Pb dating and magnetostratigraphic correlation show that the studied section of the Kailas Formation ranges from 25.1 Ma to 21.8 Ma in age, and that the fossil flora occurred at 23.3 Ma (latest Oligocene). The uppermost Oligocene Kailas fossil flora is low in diversity and dominated by Populus , Betulaceae and legume. It most likely represents a deciduous, broad-leaf vegetation and suggests a temperate, humid environment with a low to moderate palaeoelevation of 1500–2900 m in the Kailas Basin during the latest Oligocene, based on the co-existing range of the living analogues of the fossil plants. This conflicts with the existence of a continuous, high Gangdese Mountains stretching across the whole southern Lhasa terrane in the late Oligocene. Available evidence appears to suggest strong uplift of the southern Lhasa terrane after the latest Oligocene. The process of marine ecosystem collapse during the Permian–Triassic mass extinction may have varied in different paleogeographic settings and the intensity of oxygen depletion changed with different water depths. It remains largely unknown about the detailed biotic community collapse and its relation to paleo-redox condition in the deep-water basin. At the Kejiao section in the Nanpanjiang Basin of South China, the continuous sedimentation sequences and complete fossil records from the Changhsingian of Permian to the lowest Triassic provide a unique opportunity to study the progressive biotic crisis associated with oxygen deficiency in a deep-water setting. Here, we document high-resolution records of both the biodiversity dataset of different taxa and the redox data from the Kejiao section to achieve a new understanding of ecosystem deterioration associated with changes of redox conditions. The redox evolution revealed by changes in pyrite framboid size and morphology shows a change trend from lower dysoxic to oxygenated, and then to dysoxic interrupted by oxygenated and anoxic conditions in the late Changhsingian, and ending with euxinic conditions in the earliest Triassic. 60 species in 41 genera from radiolarians, bivalves, brachiopods and cephalopods were identified in the section and their occurrences show two pulses of extinction. The first pulse corresponds to the reduction in species richness of planktonic radiolarians and nektonic cephalopods, and the second pulse is documented by the wipe out of benthic brachiopods and remnant nektonic cephalopods and the decline in the species richness of benthic bivalves. This indicates the collapse of plankton and most nekton communities is ahead of the counterpart of benthos in the deepwater setting, supporting what observed in other sections in South China. The plankton and nekton communities inhabited water columns and the benthic community dwelled in the bottom water. Thus, the stagewise collapse of communities might be contributed by the expansion/migration, in particular, the downward expansion of Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) documented by the information from pyrite framboids and the sedimentation. • New records on the largely unknown deep-water palaeocommunity collapse near the PTB. • Radiolarian, bivalve, brachiopod and cephalopod species were examined at Kejiao. • The collapse of plankton and most nekton communities is ahead of that for benthos. • Changes in pyrite framboid sizes show a fluctuated, deficient oxygen condition. • The stagewise collapse of communities recalled the expansion of OMZ. Research on the dynamics of body-size changes in varied water depths can provide important insights into the evolution of palaeoenvironments through time. This paper attempts to investigate how the body sizes of two most commonly found chonetid brachiopod species in the uppermost Permian in South China varied with palaeo-bathymetry. The result shows that there is a broadly negative correlation between the latest Permian brachiopod body size and water depth. There is no simple singular variable that could explain this correlation because bathymetry is correlated, either linearly or nonlinearly, to food availability, redox condition and habitat temperature, as well as substrate conditions. Overall, we found that both oxygen and food availability played a more important role in controlling the differences of body sizes, and specifically several depressed factors (low food availability, anoxia, or abnormal temperature) have compounded and caused small body sizes in deeper waters during the latest Permian. We propose that the brachiopod miniaturization during the Permian-Triassic crisis in South China was collectively driven by anoxia, food restriction and high temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mechanisms and controls of the Middle-Late Miocene paleoenvironmental evolution of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau remain elusive. Here, we present an integrated multiproxy study of total organic carbon isotopes, lipid biomarkers, petrographic components and micropaleontological records in the well-dated Xigou section of the Xunhua Basin. Our data reveal a large decrease (−1.1 ‰) in bulk organic carbon isotopes (δ13C org) at ∼12.7 Ma, a broad minimum at ∼12.7–8.0 Ma, and a large increase (+1.3 ‰) at ∼8.0 Ma. The decline in δ13C org at 12.7 Ma was accompanied by pronounced changes in n -alkane indices, clay minerals, palynology, and ostracods, recording a major rise of lake level of paleo-Lake Xunhua due to increased precipitation in the regional catchment. Our inference of sustained elevated humidity in the Xunhua Basin at 12.7–8.0 Ma is contrary to previously reported cooling and drying trends on the NE Tibetan Plateau for the Middle-Late Miocene (∼14–8 Ma), thus precluding the role of global climate change as the dominant driver. Rather, we attribute the paleoenvironmental evolution of the Xunhua Basin to changes in regional rainfall patterns related to orogenic uplift. The Jishi Shan mountain range reached a critical threshold elevation at ∼12.7 Ma, becoming an orographic barrier to Westerlies-transported moisture and thus enhancing intensified precipitation within the Xunhua Basin. By ∼8 Ma, further uplift caused this orogen to become a barrier to the East Asian monsoon, resulting in aridification of the Xunhua Basin. • The Xunhua Basin sensitively recorded environmental changes on NE Tibetan Plateau. • Uplift of Jishi Shan since ∼13 Ma caused moister Xunhua Basin and drier Lixia Basin. • Regional humidity changes due to trapping of Westerlies moisture to west, rain shadow effect to east. • This environmental change recorded by d13C org , n -alkanes, ostracods, and palynology. • Two key environmental transition periods—at ∼12.7 Ma and ∼8.0 Ma. New analysis of Permian–Triassic brachiopod assemblages and body-size changes in South China provides insights into the process of the environmental crisis in the lead up to the end-Permian mass extinction. The recently discovered Daoduishan section of South China can be considered as an important auxiliary section for the study of brachiopods at the Meishan Section D of South China, the GSSP of the Permian–Triassic Boundary (PTB). This paper studied changes of the brachiopod assemblages and body sizes through the upper part of the Changxing Formation and basal Yinkeng Formation of Daoduishan. The results show that significant changes of brachiopod assemblages took place between Beds 24e and 26. Brachiopods? Prelissorhynchia sp. and Paracruirithyris pygmaea are the dominators in Beds 14–24e, while Tethyochonetes pigmaea and Paryphella spp. are the dominators in Beds 26–29. Body sizes of brachiopods significantly decreased between Beds 24e and 26 and then maintained smaller means in Beds 27–29. Studies of brachiopod morphological features indicate both Tethyochonetes and Paryphella had advantageous adaptations enabling them to copy with living in an anoxic/dysoxic and/or low-productivity environment during the Permian–Triassic crisis. Late Cenozoic changes in chemical weathering and the dust cycle in response to the regional aridification and global cooling in the tectonically active northern Tibetan Plateau is an intriguing issue, although it remains poorly understood. The change in the 87Sr/86Sr ratio of basin water is linked to variations in the overall input of various Sr sources with different 87Sr/86Sr ratios, and analyses of such changes can be a useful tool for revealing changes in regional lithology, weathering regimes and the dust cycle linked to tectonics and climate. In this study, we collected fossil shells of ostracods and gastropods from the Miocene Dahonggou section to reconstruct the paleolake water 87Sr/86Sr ratio from 14.8 Ma to 11.1 Ma in the northern Qaidam Basin on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. The reconstructed paleolake water 87Sr/86Sr ratios based on fossil shells and bulk carbonates from sediments display a coincident and stable 87Sr/86Sr ratio of approximately 0.7115, which did not show any detectable change in response to the enhanced aridification since ~13 Ma as inferred by the ostracod assemblage and its stable carbon and oxygen isotopes. The results indicate that the Sr influx regime from various sources did not change significantly during the aridification processes ~13 Ma, which may have been caused by a less detectable change in proportion of silicate versus carbonate weathering, and/or an overwhelming Sr source (e.g., extrabasinal eolian dust) that occurred from 14.8 Ma to 11.1 Ma. Further, the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of modern lake water and river sand carbonates in the study region are significantly higher, approximately ≥0.001, than those of the Miocene lake water. This observation can be explained by two possible mechanisms that need to be tested in the future: 1) given a Miocene Sr input regime that is similar to today, a large contribution from some extrabasinal Sr source (e.g., eolian dust) with a much lower 87Sr/86Sr ratio is expected to have prevailed from 14.8 Ma to 11.1 Ma but is absent in the modern setting or 2) given a Miocene Sr input regime that could yield an overall lower lake water 87Sr/86Sr ratio of approximately 0.7115, a significant increase in the 87Sr/86Sr ratio of catchment-scale Sr source may have occurred after 11 Ma in response to the uplift of the Qilian Mountains, which would have enhanced hydrothermal activity, metamorphism, glaciation and landslide processes, thereby resulting in more-radiogenic Sr source. The morphology and position of elements in the apparatus are keys to resolving the taxonomy, homology, evolutionary relationships, structure, function and feeding patterns among conodont taxa. Fused clusters preserving natural associations between elements provide direct information on element morphology, the positions of elements within the apparatus, and even their original three-dimensional arrangement. Here, we report 41 fused conodont clusters from Member II of the Guanling Formation in Luoping County, Yunnan Province, southwestern China, which provide a basis for inferring the multielement composition of the apparatus of the early Middle Triassic Nicoraella. The apparatus is composed of 15 elements (a single S 0 element, two pairs of S 1–4 , M and P 1–2 elements) like other apparatuses in Gondolellidae, i.e. the genera Novispathodus and Neogondolella. These Luoping Biota clusters are significant because (a) they permit a positional homology-based comparison of multielement Novispathodus with form genera such as Cypridodella (S 1), Enantiognathus (S 2), and Hindeodella (S 3 and S 4), (b) they facilitate a review of apparatus composition within superfamily Gondolelloidea, (c) they provide direct insight into apparatus architecture currently interpreted largely in light of distantly related Carboniferous polygnathacean ozarkodinins, and (d) these clusters, along with collections of discrete conodont elements, provide a model for inferring the multielement composition of closely related species known only from discrete element collections. • Exceptionally preserved Middle Triassic conodont clusters from Luoping, Yunnan, southwest China; • conodont multielement apparatus of Nicoraella were reconstructed; • The new 15 element conodont apparatus highlights the importance to revise other apparatus in family Gondolelloidea; [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
