Abstract The subduction history of the Neo-Tethys is critical for understanding the early-stage tectonic evolution of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. Arc volcanics, which usually record the subduction process, thus can help trace the evolution of the Neo-Tethys. In this paper, we report for the first time zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb ages, whole-rock major and trace element geochemistry, as well as Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic data for the volcanic rocks from the Danshiting Formation at the southern edge of the Lhasa Terrane. Two samples collected from the Danshiting Formation volcanic rocks yield zircon U-Pb ages of 97.1 ± 0.8 Ma and 90.1 ± 0.7 Ma, respectively. The volcanic rocks of the Danshiting Formation are composed dominantly of basalts and andesites characterized by depletion of high-field-strength elements, low (87Sr/86Sr) i ratios (0.7042–0.7045), high ε Nd (t) (+2.1 to +2.7) and high ε Hf (t) values (mean + 11.6). These rocks show geochemical affinity of arc volcanic rocks. The volcanic rocks of the Danshiting Formation may have formed during the northward subduction of the Neo-Tethys. This paper, combined with the previous data, briefly divide the northward subduction of the Neo-Tethys into four periods: the Jurassic (195–150 Ma), when the magmatic activity was controlled by the northward high-angle subduction of the Neo-Tethys that produced volcanics of the Yeba and Bima formations; the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (150–110 Ma), when the Neo-Tethys subducted at low-angles; the Late Cretaceous (110–80 Ma), when subduction was of the Andean-type and produced volcanic rocks of the Danshiting Formation; the Paleogene (70–40 Ma), when there was transition from ocean-to-continent subduction to continent–continent collision that produced volcanic rocks of the Linzizong Group. Often referred to as the "Third Pole", the Tibetan Plateau combines high elevation, extreme cold temperatures, hyper-aridity, and low oxygen levels. The strategy that early populations adopted to adapt to the harsh environment of the Tibetan Plateau has always attracted much attention. However, relevant studies have predominantly focused on the relatively lower elevation northeastern part of the Tibetan Plateau (<3000 m a.s.l.), with limited study in areas of ultrahigh elevation (>3500 m a.s.l.). This paper employed the flotation method and charcoal analysis of survey profiles from thirteen archaeological sites in the ultrahigh-elevation region of the middle Yarlung Zangbo River basin on the southern Tibetan Plateau, and finds that ancient people have been active in this region since the last deglaciation. The primary fuel sources used by ancient populations were small trees such as sea buckthorn (Hippophae gyantsensis) and shrubs such as juniper (Juniperus). The widespread use of undesirable wood (dwarf thorny shrub) like Sophora moorcroftiana and Caragana , along with the phenomenon of many sites relying on a single taxon, reflects the prevalent issue of fuel scarcity in this ultrahigh-elevation region. Past plant diversity dynamics can provide a historical perspective on biodiversity change and ecosystem dynamics as a guide to conservation management in the future. Pollen analysis is one of the most widely used approaches to reconstruct plant diversity change through time, but the representativeness of pollen diversity to plant diversity is not yet fully understood and especially in open landscapes. In this paper, we compare pollen assemblages from topsoil in the open landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau with the surrounding vegetation to investigate their compositional similarity and the correlations between their diversity (richness and evenness), and to evaluate the influence of climate variables, landscape characteristics, and human disturbance on the pollen diversity. The results show that pollen assemblages vary obviously in different vegetation types and they can represent their surrounding plant communities at low taxonomic levels. Pollen richness boarders a better match with plant richness than pollen evenness with plant evenness across the whole study area, but the correlation is weak (r adj 2 < 0.2, p < 0.001). Transforming plants into their pollen equivalents has little improvement for the correlations between pollen and plant richness/evenness. Pollen richness and evenness can capture well the trend in plant richness and evenness along the vegetation gradient, suggesting that they can be used as gamma (landscape scale) rather than alpha (local scale) diversity metrics in the study area. Mean annual precipitation (MAP), mean annual temperature (MAT), and patch richness (PatchS) are positively associated with pollen richness. MAP, PatchS, and human disturbance (HD) are significantly predictors for pollen evenness. The distribution pattern of arid–humid climate in the modern northwest–southeast confrontation in Asia evolved from the zonal distribution pattern of the Paleogene. However, this evolutionary process remains poorly constrained by geological evidence. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of sporopollen assemblages recorded in Late Eocene strata of the Jianchuan Basin in southwest China. We show that vegetation patterns exhibited a remarkable shift from tropical–subtropical sparse forest to subtropical–temperate mixed broad-leaved–coniferous forest at ∼40.6 Ma; this shift is further indicated by the rapid decrease in drought-tolerant plants, mostly Ephedra and Chenopodiaceae, evidence that the previous hot–dry climate was replaced by a warm–humid climate at this time. This evidence suggests that the Asian monsoon began to affect the study area at ∼40.6 Ma. We then comprehensively integrated sporopollen results from several basins across East Asia, revealing that the frontal edge of the humid monsoon climate moved intermittently to the northwest after the Late Eocene, and may have advanced to the Lunpola–Lanzhou line by the early Late Oligocene, this being similar to the position of the leading edge of the modern monsoon. Moreover, the frontal edge of the humid monsoon climate may have extended as far as the Qaidam Basin during the Middle Miocene, but then gradually retreated to the position of the modern monsoon front. The uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and global climate change may have played dominant roles in this evolution. • A Late Eocene sporopollen record was obtained from the subtropical Yunnan region. • The Asian monsoon extended from tropical to subtropical regions around 40.6 Ma. • The Asian monsoon reached the modern monsoon front in the early Late Oligocene. • The Asian monsoon advanced on one occasion to the Qaidam Basin in the Mid-Miocene. Mountain glaciers are one of the most sensitive indicators of climate change. Reconstructing past glacier extents provides valuable insights into the climate change for specific regions where instrumental records are not enough and even absent. In the paper we mapped the outlines for 691 Little Ice Age (LIA) glaciers in terms of prominent moraines beyond contemporary glaciers in the Tanggula Mountains, central Tibetan Plateau (TP). Based on these glacier outlines, we reconstructed the ice thicknesses and surfaces for the LIA glaciers in the region. Accordingly, we calculated the equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) for contemporary and LIA glaciers. By comparing the ELAs between the contemporary and LIA glaciers, we estimated the LIA summer temperature decreases in different subregions of the Tanggula Mountains. Since the LIA, the ELA have risen by 35.6 ± 18.8 m, 26.1 ± 17.6 m, and 63.1 ± 38.6 m in the respective western, central, and eastern subregions of the Tanggula Mountains. Assuming no change in precipitation, the LIA summer temperature would decrease by 0.22 ± 0.12 °C, 0.14 ± 0.09 °C, and 0.34 ± 0.21 °C in the three subregions, respectively. Moreover, glaciers in the western, central, and eastern subregions have lost 13.3%, 23.9%, and 42.8% of their area, 15.4%, 25.3%, and 39.6% of their length, and 20.8%, 39.0%, and 61.0% of their volume, respectively. By compiling the LIA ELA data from previous studies, we also estimated the LIA summer temperature changes for other regions of the TP. Characterized by elevated pCO 2 levels and global warmth, the mid-Miocene climate is a valuable analogue for investigating how the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) may evolve at different time scales. In this paper, we present a quantitative EASM precipitation record with a temporal resolution of ∼14 kyr during the mid-Miocene (∼15.97 to 13.64 Ma) by applying the probabilistic CREST (Climate Reconstruction Software) method to palynological records from the northeast part of the Tibetan Plateau. Reconstructed mid-Miocene EASM precipitation (∼860 mm) was almost twice that of today (∼450 mm), indicating much stronger EASM intensity. The reconstruction shows a gradual long-term decline on which was superimposed a stronger EASM period (∼15.97–14.54 Ma) followed by a relatively stable period (∼14.54–13.84 Ma) and a short period of reduced precipitation (∼13.84–13.64 Ma). The correspondence of EASM precipitation changes with the mid-Miocene climate optimum and west-east thermal gradients in equatorial Pacific suggests these two factors were the main driving forces for EASM evolution from ∼15.97 to 14.54 Ma, whereas the combined impact of global cooling and the northward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone is probably responsible for the slight decline of the EASM from ∼14.54 to 13.84 Ma. The weaker EASM between ∼13.84 and 13.64 Ma was most likely a response to the global significant cooling event Mi-3. On orbital time scales, the precipitation records exhibit a dominant ∼400 kyr periodicity, indicating EASM changes were mainly paced by eccentricity via the modulation of precessional amplitude, and the East Antarctic Ice Sheet variations were probably another important driving force. • A high-resolution, quantitative mid-Miocene EASM precipitation record was obtained. • The mean mid-Miocene MAP of ∼860 mm was almost 2 times that of today in NE TP. • Global temperature played key role in long-term mid-Miocene EASM evolution. • West-east thermal gradients in EP, ITCZ are also vital drivers in some intervals. • Orbitally, mid-Miocene EASM variability was dominated by eccentricity forcing. Understanding human impact on the vegetation of the Tibetan Plateau through the Holocene is important for developing strategies for sustainable ecosystem management in the region. In this paper, 53 pairs of surface-soil samples from inside and outside livestock enclosures were obtained from across the Tibetan Plateau to investigate the differences in pollen assemblages between grazed and ungrazed sites. This modern dataset was then applied to palynological records from four lakes in the northeast Tibetan Plateau region to investigate middle to late Holocene grazing history. Results show that modern grazing activities have a limited impact on the vegetation, although grazing activity leads to an increase in the pollen proportion of Cyperaceae, Artemisia , Ranunculaceae, Brassicaceae, Taraxacum -type, Fabaceae, and Saxifrageceae while representatives of Poaceae, Chenopodiaceae, and Aster -type pollen decrease. Application of these grazing indicators to the pollen spectra obtained from the four lake sites, together with other proxies, reveals that grazing activity only commenced during the last few hundred years in the northeast marginal areas of the Tibetan Plateau at c. 3000 m a.s.l, while there is no grazing signal in pollen records from above 4000 m a.s.l. Our study emphasises the importance of using multi-proxy methods in estimating signals of past human activity. • Pollen assemblage should be insensitive to grazing activities on the Tibetan Plateau. • Human impacts on vegetation at ∼3400 m a.s.l are limited to within a few centuries. • No significant pollen signal of grazing is revealed for the high-elevation areas. The Qilian-Qaidam Orogenic Belt is a component of the western Central China Orogenic Belt, and records a nearly complete evolutionary history of the South Qilian and North Qaidam oceans (branches of the Proto-Tethyan Ocean). However, the timing and process of amalgamation of the microblocks of the western Central China Orogenic Belt and the closure time of the South Qilian and North Qaidam oceans remain uncertain. The Olongbuluke Terrane (OLT), located in the central of the Qilian-Qaidam Orogenic Belt, contains well-developed Precambrian to Paleozoic sedimentary successions that shed light on the tectonic history of these ocean basins. In this paper, detrital zircon U Pb ages combined with ophiolitic, magmatic and high-pressure to ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic records and field investigations, indicate that the OLT was part of a passive continental margin during the early Paleozoic and there was a microblock, named the North Qaidam Terrane (NQT), lying between the Qaidam Block and the OLT. A marked provenance change occurs in the OLT after ca. 517 Ma, which is inferred to record the collision between the OLT and NQT. Later, the North Qaidam oceanic plate subducted under the NQT, and the North Qaidam Ocean closed at ca. 450 Ma. The similar detrital zircon U Pb age spectra of contemporaneous deposit flysch sequences in the Shihuigou Formation (OLT) and the Balonggonggaer Formation (the South Qilian Accretionary Belt) indicates the onset of collision between the OLT and Central Qilian Terrane occurred at ca. 458 Ma. The detrital zircon U Pb age spectra of microblocks from the early Paleozoic strata of the northern Tibetan Plateau share a North Indian affinity, indicating that the closure of the Proto-Tethyan Ocean may relate to the formation of the Gondwanan landmass. • The North Qaidam Terrane may exist between the Qaidam Block and the Olongbuluke Terrane. • The Olongbuluke Terrane collided to the North Qaidam Terrane at ca. 517 Ma. • The onset of collision between the Olongbuluke Terrane and the Central Qilian Terrane at ca. 458 Ma. • The closure of Proto-Tethys may relate to the formation of the Gondwana landmass. Abstract The Lhasa terrane is thought to be a key region for understanding the elevation history of the southern Tibetan Plateau after collision of continental India and Asia in early Paleocene. Stable isotopic studies consistently suggest that the Lhasa terrane had reached its near-present elevation before the Miocene. In this paper we report a plant megafossil assemblage from the Kailas Formation of the Kailas Basin in western part of the southern Lhasa terrane. Our U-Pb dating and magnetostratigraphic correlation show that the studied section of the Kailas Formation ranges from 25.1 Ma to 21.8 Ma in age, and that the fossil flora occurred at 23.3 Ma (latest Oligocene). The uppermost Oligocene Kailas fossil flora is low in diversity and dominated by Populus , Betulaceae and legume. It most likely represents a deciduous, broad-leaf vegetation and suggests a temperate, humid environment with a low to moderate palaeoelevation of 1500–2900 m in the Kailas Basin during the latest Oligocene, based on the co-existing range of the living analogues of the fossil plants. This conflicts with the existence of a continuous, high Gangdese Mountains stretching across the whole southern Lhasa terrane in the late Oligocene. Available evidence appears to suggest strong uplift of the southern Lhasa terrane after the latest Oligocene. Abstract This special issue provides new studies in the field of Cenozoic climate change in eastern Asia. The papers in this volume are multidisciplinary in nature and examine a range of topics including paleovegetation, sedimentology, clay mineralogy, geochemistry, magnetostratigraphy, and climate modelling. The findings of these studies demonstrate that analysis of terrestrial paleoclimate changes in eastern Asia may offer insights into the effects of Tibetan Plateau uplift, and ultimately the dynamic processes of global change that took hold throughout the Cenozoic. The second part of this special issue, to be published later, will add a paleoecology component, examining how Cenozoic climate change has impacted floras and faunas in eastern Asia. The vegetation history of the central Tibetan Plateau over the last two millennia provides an important baseline for exploring future vegetation evolution. In this paper, we analyze high-resolution records of pollen, grain-size, total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) for a 66.5 cm deep sediment core collected from Beilei Co on the central Tibetan Plateau. Between ca. 210 CE and 1988 CE, pollen spectra together with other proxies show that the Beilei Co region was covered by alpine steppe and experienced a relatively stable environment, with only slight changes in vegetation composition and minor climatic variations. However, since 1988 CE, abundances of Artemisia and Cyperaceae have begun to increase, while those of Chenopodiaceae (current accepted Latin name is Amaranthaceae) and Asteraceae have decreased sharply. Both the pollen assemblages and other proxies show that the study area is currently undergoing a major change and that the period of vegetation stability that has characterized the past two millenia has now ended. We argue that the recent changes in the vegetation may be caused by increasing precipitation and/or thawing permafrost due to global warming. In this paper, we undertake a high-resolution palynological analysis of a sediment core covering the last 1500 years obtained from Lake Ayakum in the northern Tibetan Plateau, to improve the understanding of regional climate fluctuations and their driving mechanisms. The pollen spectra are dominated by herbaceous species such as Artemisia , Chenopodiaceae, Cyperaceae and Poaceae, which grew in various alpine desert settings. Four pollen assemblage zones are identified using stratigraphically constrained cluster analysis, representing climate history at different stages. The Artemisia /Chenopodiaceae (A/C) ratio and axis score of the first principal component are used to infer regional moisture conditions and reveal a temporal pattern that is consistent with various records from central Asia. The source of Cyperaceae pollen is mainly from marsh wetlands distributed around the lake, which responded sensitively to the lake level fluctuations. In contrast, arboreal pollen is mainly a long-distance transported component, reflecting changes in regional vegetation. Our findings show that the northern Tibetan Plateau experienced relatively wet conditions during the Dark Age Cold Period and the Little Ice Age, while relatively dry conditions occurred during the Medieval Warm Period and the last two centuries. Fluctuations in moisture levels are broadly consistent with moisture records elsewhere in western China, and show a good correlation with phase changes of the North Atlantic Oscillation. The direction and intensity of Asian Summer Monsoon (ASM) circulation in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) region strongly influence pollen dispersal patterns; however, this spatial effect has been rarely quantified. In this paper, we explore the relative importance of this directional spatial effect. Specifically, we construct a wind connectivity diagram for modern pollen sample sites according to the prevailing monsoon direction, and extract latent spatial variables representing the directional process of the ASM, using the method of asymmetric eigenvector maps. We fit redundancy analysis models using both spatial variables and local climate factors, and conduct variation partitioning to quantify the effect of directional spatial effect by the ASM. Taking into account the joint effect with local climate, the directional spatial process induced by the ASM significantly explains the variation of pollen assemblages on the TP. The effect is detected in pollen groups with contrasting functional types and dispersal modes; for example, the composition of arboreal pollen and non-arboreal pollen are both significantly affected by the ASM, yet best explained by models assuming different monsoon directions. Anemophilous pollen shows a higher percentage of variation explained by the ASM than non-anemophilous pollen. Our results indicate that directional processes induced by the monsoon is an important influence on pollen assemblages in the TP and support the idea that deposition patterns of pollen, especially arboreal pollen is a useful proxy for studying monsoon evolution. A similar approach can also be applied to paleomonsoon simulations using fossil pollen records. The Linxia Basin is an important region for understanding the tectonism and uplift history in the northeast Tibetan Plateau, and also contains rich mammalian faunas of evolutionary significance. In this paper, we conduct a provenance study of Cenozoic sediments, relying primarily on U-Pb dating of detrital zircons, to investigate the exhumation history of surrounding terranes and to gain a better understanding of the relationship between tectonism, basin development and paleoenvironment. Samples were collected from the Maogou section in the central Linxia Basin, which has been recently dated by magnetostratigraphy. Detrital zircon populations show five U Pb age groups of 65–350 Ma, 350–600 Ma, 600–1600 Ma, 1600–2200 Ma and 2200–2600 Ma; however, U Pb age patterns varied up-section, indicating different sources at different times. Sediments from the lower part of the section (>27.8 Ma) were sourced from multiple regions, including the distal East Kunlun Shan, Qilian Shan, and Songpan–Ganzi terranes, and as well as the proximal West Qinling region. Contributions from the Songpan–Ganzi terrane increased considerably during the late Oligocene (27.8–23 Ma), as a result of strong tectonic movements of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. During the early Miocene (23–17.2 Ma), the northern sources of the Laji Shan–Maxian Shan region supplied more sediments to the basin, indicating the uplift and exhumation of these mountain ranges. Until the middle Miocene (17.2–12.8 Ma), the Songpan-Ganzi terrane and the northern sources dominated the basin sediments, while the northern sources and the Jishi Shan region became increasingly important sources at around 11.6 Ma. In this paper, we analyze the Holocene record of extreme flood events in the upper Minjiang River valley of the eastern Tibetan Plateau, China. Slackwater deposits (SWDs), the fine-grained sediments of palaeofloods, were identified within debris flow deposits at a tributary mouth and in channel expansions along the bedrock gorge. Eight palaeoflood SWDs were dated to between 6.0 ± 0.9 ka and 4.6 ± 0.9 ka using optically-stimulated luminescence analysis in combination with the minimum age model and represent at least two phases of palaeoflood events. The palaeoflood history in the upper Minjiang River Valley is consistent with the record of the mid-Holocene flood events in the mainstream of the Yangtze River. These mid-Holocene extreme flood events were closely related to strong ENSO activity and variability of the monsoon climate in the eastern Tibetan Plateau. In our study area, minimum palaeoflood discharges were estimated as 6500–7800 m3/s by the step-backwater method. These estimated discharges are less than the values inferred for the outburst flood that occurred in the upper Minjiang River Valley in 1933. Flood-inundation maps show that palaeoflood SWDs were deposited in low-velocity backwater zones. Artemisia and Chenopodiaceae are the two main pollen taxa in studies of lake sediments on the central and western Tibetan Plateau (TP). In this paper, we present Artemisia /Chenopodiaceae (A/C) ratios in pollen assemblages of surface sediments from 42 lakes on the central and western TP. Relationships between vegetation, climate and A/C ratio are investigated. The results show that the A/C ratio in the study region can distinguish desert from steppe vegetation. As a whole, the A/C ratio was higher than 1.2 in the steppe vegetation and lower than 1.2 in the desert vegetation zone. Statistical analysis revealed that the A/C ratio can be used as a moisture indicator on the TP. Based on the A/C ratio in pollen assemblages of sediment core TAN12-2 from Lake Tangra Yumco, we reconstructed the vegetation and climate history of the southern TP during the transitional period from the late glacial to the Holocene (17.5–10 cal kyr BP). From 17.5 to 16 cal kyr BP, desert vegetation occurred and climate was extremely dry. During 16–15 cal kyr BP, desert was replaced by steppe vegetation and climate became wetter. From 15 to 10 cal kyr BP, the lake basin of Tangra Yumco was covered by the steppe vegetation and climate tended to be more humid. Comparing our results with other lacustrine records on the TP, we found that the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) significantly affected the southern TP earlier than the northeastern TP. The uplift of the Tibetan Plateau has been widely associated with India-Asia continental collision during the Cenozoic. However, recent studies have proposed that a proto-Tibetan Plateau in central Tibet was elevated during the late Mesozoic. This paper improves that understanding by focusing on the Cretaceous terrestrial strata in the Gerze area of central Tibet. Our studies suggest that the Qushenla Formation in the Nare area contains alluvial fan conglomerate intercalated with rhyolitic ignimbrite and vesicular rhyolite. Zircon U Pb dating of rhyolitic ignimbrite (103.9 ± 1.4 Ma) and two granitoid boulders of conglomerate (106.0 ± 1.6 and 106.1 ± 1.5) indicate that the Qushenla Formation was deposited during the late Albian. The compositions of the Qushenla Formation conglomerate were dominated by hypabyssal intrusions on the southern Qiangtang terrane, which recorded a rapid uplift and denudation process in the late Albian, accompanied by intense volcanic eruptions. The second set of terrestrial strata is the Upper Cretaceous Jingzhushan Formation alluvial fan-braided river deposits, which can be divided into a lower conglomerate member (Member 1) and a upper sandstone member (Member 2). The large amount of bioclastic limestone fragments in the Member 1 show that they come from the Upper Cretaceous Langshan Formation in the central and northern Lhasa subterranes. While in the Member 2, abundant limestone debris, detrital zircon yielding Jurassic–Cretaceous ages with ε Hf (t) values between −18.6 and + 8.4, and occurrence of volcanic and ancient zircon grains indicate a volcanic-sedimentary source located in the central and northern Lhasa subterranes, with some input from the Bangong-Nujiang suture zone. This suggests that the central and northern Lhasa subterranes experienced rapid crustal uplift in the Late Cretaceous, thus ending the marine sedimentary environment since the Jurassic. Based on the temporal and spatial sedimentary characteristics of the Qushenla and Jingzhushan formations as well as the regional data, our integrated study suggests that the central plateau (Lhasa and southern Qiangtang terranes) experienced a complex uplift history during the Aptian-Turonian, with southwards stepwise growth in time and space. Furthermore, the uplift mechanism of the central plateau is complex, which was controlled by the diachronous closure of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean from east to west during the Early Cretaceous, and by the far-field forces associated with northwards subduction of the Neo-Tethys Ocean during the Late Cretaceous. The climatic effect of Tibetan Plateau (TP) uplift is a hot topic in paleoclimate research. In this paper, the results of a set of numerical simulations are reported to analyze the impact of regional TP uplift on the Asian monsoon climate. The focus is on the impact of the regional uplift in the west and east parts on South Asian summer monsoon, as well as the impact of regional uplift on East Asian winter monsoon. The results show that the uplifts of the Himalaya and the central-southern TP have little effect on summer precipitation increasing over South Asia. Whereas, the further uplifts of the TP in the west and east parts, including the uplifts of both the eastern and western TP, have important effects on the strengthening of the South Asian summer monsoon. The uplift of the eastern TP leads to low-level cyclonic circulation anomalies appearing in the Bay of Bengal, accompanied by anomalous upward movement, and in turn precipitation markedly increases in the Bay of Bengal. Whereas, the uplift of the western TP produces low-level cyclonic circulation anomalies around the uplifted region and intensifies the moisture transport from the tropical ocean, and thus precipitation further increases in South Asia, especially in the northern Arabian Sea. The strengthened summer monsoon in South Asia is coupled with the intensification in diabatic heating and moisture convergence. For the East Asian winter monsoon, the intensification of winter monsoon winds is related more to the regional uplifts than the uplift of the whole TP. In southwestern China and Southeast Asia modern geology and topography have been influenced strongly by the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates. The southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau is well known for its high biodiversity and diverse vegetation types. While the present diversity is explained by the geological history of this region, to date no study has looked at how past vegetation was shaped by geological and topographical history. In this study, we focus on three coeval late Miocene leaf assemblages from Yunnan: Lincang, Xiaolongtan and Xianfeng. The palaeoelevation of these three sites is reconstructed using enthalpy as a palaeoaltimeter. Enthalpy at the fossil site is reconstructed based on leaf physiognomy; the difference between this enthalpy and enthalpy at sea-level is used as a proxy for altitude. The palaeoaltitudes are resolved as 214 ± 901 m asl for Lincang, 530 ± 901 m asl for Xiaolongtan, and 1936 ± 901 m asl for Xianfeng. The floristic components of these floras are analysed for their geographical elements. There is a gradient in the percentage of tropical genera between the three floras from Lincang, at the lowest elevation, to Xianfeng, at the highest level. For Lincang, this percentage exceeds the threshold used to define present day tropical regions. Our results demonstrate that there was already a floristic differentiation in Yunnan during the late Miocene. Floras with tropical affinities were at low altitude, whereas floras with temperate affinities were at high altitude. With the later uplift of southern Yunnan, floras with tropical affinities retreated to the south where they are still present. Abstract: Marine oxygen isotope records show that the Cenozoic global climate has undergone remarkable fundamental changes. However, how terrestrial ecosystems respond to these changes remains unclear. The Xining Basin on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau holds continuous fine fluvial-lacustrine sediments from the early Eocene to the early Miocene (between ~52Ma and 17Ma). This paper first presents total organic carbon isotope (δ13CTOC) and pollen records from the Xiejia section in the Xining Basin, as indicators of the long-term terrestrial paleoecosystem and paleoclimate changes in the Asian interior of NW China. The δ13CTOC record shows a long term persistently decreasing trend (from ~−20‰ to −23.5‰) superimposed with obvious cycles of five distinctive phases of heavier and lighter δ13CTOC values, along with short pulses of especially low values occurring at ~32.5Ma, 23Ma, 21.5Ma, and 18Ma. These variations generally correlate with changes of gymnosperm content or the ratio of gymnosperm to angiosperm (G/A); i.e., heavier δ13CTOC values correspond with higher gymnosperm content or higher G/A, as well as with global temperatures (for both long term trends and shorter term fluctuations). We propose that global temperatures might provide the major factor controlling the evolution of the gymnosperm content (and the G/A ratio) that determines the δ13CTOC in the sediments. The East Asian monsoon may not have reached this region during the deposition of the sediments, or alternatively, its signals could not clearly be identified in these low resolution paleoecologic records. Abstract: The Yellow River (Huang He) downstream of the Jinshaan Canyon displays well-preserved fluvial terrace sequences below an extensive planation surface at the northeastern Ordos Plateau. Despite a series of well developed geomorphic surfaces, the landscape evolution of the plateau is largely unconstrained. The Jinshaan Canyon, formed by the deeply incising Yellow River through the Ordos Plateau, provides keys to understanding the landscape evolution of this Plateau with respect to the nearby northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. This paper presents two sets of magnetostratigraphic results derived from the aeolian deposits (Red Clay and loess) on the planation surface and the uppermost Yellow River terrace in the middle part of the Jinshaan Canyon. Magnetostratigraphic analysis reveals that the planation surface and the uppermost Yellow River terrace formed respectively at circa 3.7Ma and circa 1.2Ma ago. The Ordos Plateau is the product of a period of planation culminating just before circa 3.7Ma and then was interrupted by an episode of uplift, which may be correlated with the accelerated growth of the Tibetan Plateau in the Miocene–Pliocene. The drainage system in the Jinshaan Canyon was re-organized around 3.7Ma. No correlation seems to exist between an older drainage existing prior to circa 3.7Ma and the present Yellow River network in the Jinshaan Canyon, even though sedimentary and tectonic evidence suggests that the drainage in the middle reach of the Yellow River formed in the late Miocene-early Pliocene. Abstract: The tectonic evolution of the Qiangtang Block in the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau has been a controversial subject for a long time. In this paper, the discovery of new stratigraphic and fusuline fossil evidence from the Permian sequences (Qudi and Lugu formations) of the Qiangtang Block is reported and the palaeogeographical position and tectonic history of this block during the Late Cisuralian (Late Early Permian) are discussed. The Qudi Formation is typified by thick turbidite deposits and contains Artinskian fusulines such as Pseudofusulina and Chalaroschwagerina. The fusulines were deposited as grains involved in debris flow deposits, suggesting a synchronicity with the depositional time of the turbidites. The subsequent Lugu Formation is dominated by seamount-type carbonates with an irregular basalt base. Fusulines Cancellina, Pseudodoliolina and Parafusulina in the base of the carbonates confirm its age as middle Kungurian. The transition from the turbidite Qudi Formation to the seamount Lugu Formation is here interpreted to be a continuous depositional process recording the Qiangtang Block''s separation from the Indian Plate. This separation signaled the opening of the Neotethys Ocean between the Qiangtang Block and the Indian Plate. Palaeogeographically, the Qiangtang Block''s separation is comparable with the Baoshan Block''s separation in the east and Central Pamir''s separation in the west. By contrast, the ultimate opening of the Neotethys Ocean by the separation of India–Pakistan and northern Oman is apparently much later than this event recorded in the Qiangtang Block. Consequently, it is interpreted that the opening of the Neotethys Ocean in the whole northern Gondwanan margin is a diachronous series of events. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Miocene vegetation and climate history of western China remains unclear. However, widely-distributed Miocene sediments of the Tianshui Basin in the NE Tibetan Plateau provide a great potential for deciphering the Miocene vegetation and climate history of this region. This paper presents first sporopollen record from these sediments, covering the period from 17.1 to 6.1Ma. Sporopollen data reveal that temperate, warm-temperate broad-leaved forest of Quercus, Ulmus and Betula dominated the Tianshui region between 17.1 and 14.7Ma, which was replaced by forest or forest-steppe of Ulmus, Artemisia and Betula between 14.7 and 11.7Ma. After a return to a broad-leaved forest of Betula and Quercus during 11.7–8.5Ma, the forest decreased rapidly and was replaced mostly by steppe vegetation (mainly composed of Artemisia, Chenopodiaceae and Poaceae) after 8.5Ma. We interpret the observed vegetation changes as a result of global climate change, which is characterized by global cooling, development of Arctic ice-sheets and permanent El Niño state after the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum. The rapid development of steppe at about 8.5Ma suggested a permanent drying of the Asian interior at this time, coinciding with the onset of the well-known Hipparion red clay deposition in North China. In this paper, we review evidence for a major biotic turnover across the Oligocene/Miocene in the Tibetan Plateau region. Based on the recent study of six well-preserved fossil sites from the Cenozoic Lunpola and Nima basins in the central Tibetan Plateau, we report a regional changeover from tropical/subtropical ecosystems in the Late Oligocene ecosystem (26–24 Ma) to a cooler, alpine biota of the Early Miocene (23–18 Ma). The Late Oligocene fossil biota, comprising of fish (climbing perch), insects and plants (palms), shows that the hinterland of the Tibetan Plateau was a warm lowland influenced by tropical humidity from the Indian Ocean. In the Early Miocene, the regional biota became transformed, with the evolution and diversification of the endemic primitive snow carp. Early Miocene vegetation was dominated by temperate broad-leaved forest with abundant conifers and herbs under a cool climate, and mammals included the hornless rhinoceros, Plesiaceratherium , a warm temperate taxon. This dramatic ecosystem change is due to a cooling linked to the uplift of Tibetan region, from a Late Oligocene paleo-elevation of no greater than 2300 m a.s.l. in the sedimentary basin to a paleo-elevation of about 3000 m a.s.l. Another factor was the Cenozoic global climatic deterioration toward to an ice-house world. • The Tibetan uplift had a profound impact on the evolution of terrestrial ecosystems. • The Oligocene subtropical ecosystem was replaced by a Miocene cooler biota in Tibet. • The Late Oligocene biota showed that the Tibetan hinterland was a warm lowland. • The Early Miocene biota eventually culminated in the present ecosystem of Tibet. • This dramatic ecosystem change is due to the cooling effect of the Tibetan Plateau.
