The paper presents a discontinuity‐based analysis of the settlement pattern changes in the Czechia–Poland cross‐border historical region of Těšín Silesia. An approach based on a well‐known and popular method (regression discontinuity design) was applied to measure spatial discontinuity. To describe the spatiotemporal changes, a combination of spatial, statistical and cartographic methods was used. The observed differences have been developing for more than 150 years; at the start, this area belonged to the territory of one state, and later it was divided by a national border. This paper examines the applicability of DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) to measure and evaluate the efficiency of materials management at the regional level. The research has been conducted for Polish regions as a case study. The basis for the calculation of the efficiency scores was a statistically selected set of materials used in a given region and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The results of the analysis reveal that 4 (Łódzkie, Śląskie, Warmińsko‐Mazurskie, and Zachodniopomorskie) out of 16 Polish regions are relatively efficient. Regional science investigations of geographical disparities in socio‐economic development sometimes utilize entropy, which measures a phenomenon's distributional uniformity across geographical space. Entropy also is widely utilized to measure random phenomenon dispersion, and often used to identify the most probable allocation of a phenomenon in space. Its common formulation is with empirical frequencies, following Shannon. Batty introduces spatial entropy assuming equal probability over space. His specification considers probabilities as fundamentally being spatially independent, which does not hold in most empirical geographical analyses. Hence, an entropy measure can be further modified by controlling extra variation caused by spatial autocorrelation. This paper proposes a Moran eigenvector spatial filtering (MESF) entropy specification that accounts for spatial autocorrelation when modelling georeferenced data. Using eigenvectors from a transformed spatial weights matrix, MESF identifies and isolates spatially autocorrelated components within a georeferenced variable. Coupling it with a non‐normal distribution, such as a binomial or beta probability model, which researchers often employ to describe empirical probabilities, expands its utility. The proposed method is examined with an application to regional income inequality in Poland during 2005–2012. This application demonstrates that accounting for spatial autocorrelation further enhances an entropy measure, showing that the MESF specification provides a flexible method for controlling spatial autocorrelation in an entropy formulation. The goal of this study is to examine the effects of investment in human capital, as funded by EU cohesion policy, on economic development in Poland at the local (LAU 2) level, that is, at the level of municipalities. We found evidence that human capital investment has a positive effect on local revenues. This effect is stronger than what is observed for the assistance programmes not related to human capital. The impact of intervention on migration balance is in turn not significant. We also observed that the effectiveness of the assistance within the cohesion policy depends on existing regional preconditions for development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
