The article presents literary criticism of the play "Love! Valour! Compassion!" by Terrence McNally. Particular focus is given the role of unconditional love in the play and in the works and personal papers of writer John Cheever. Details on McNally's teleplay adaptation of Cheever's short story "The Five-Forty-Eight" are presented. McNally's screenplay "Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune" is also discussed.
