Lipoblastomas are rare benign tumors of white fatty tissue that occur primarily in young children. Occasionally, heterogeneity of morphological appearance and histological overlap with other lipogenic tumors are described. In such cases fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis of PLAG1, a gene specifically rearranged in lipoblastoma, is necessary to prevent misdiagnosis. We present a case of lipoblastoma arising in an atypical site with histological features characteristic of lipoma. The correct diagnosis was made possible on cytogenetic grounds through the identification of the characteristic PLAG1-HAS2 fusion gene, thus allowing an appropriate clinical approach.

Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (CRCC) is a distinct variant of renal carcinoma generally affecting adults. We report a case of an unusual CRCC, arising in a male child affected by hypospadias. This case demonstrates that CRCC can occur in the pediatric patients and can be associated with genital tract anomalies such as Wilms tumor., ((c) 2007 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

This report describes a midline cerebellar primitive neuroectodermal tumor with muscular differentiation, that is, medullomyoblastoma with melanotic tubular structures, which developed in the cerebellar vermis in a 23-month-old male. Rhabdomyoblastic differentiation consisted both of striated muscle fibers and undifferentiated cells showing immunoreactivity for desmin and myogenic transcription factors. The presence of melanotic epithelial structures raised the issue of a teratomatous tumor. This case demonstrates the occurrence of this very rare tumor in early childhood as well as the utility of a careful search for the presence of myogenic and/or melanotic features in medulloblastomas., ((c) 2007 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

Germinoma arising in the bilateral basal ganglia is exceedingly rare, with only five cases reported to date. Owing to non-specific clinical findings and the frequent presence of ill-defined abnormalities without a definite tumor mass on neuroimaging, the diagnosis can be difficult. Desmoplastic infantile ganglioglioma (DIG) is a rare intracranial tumor affecting newborns and infants, and generally arising in the supratentorial region. We report a case of an unusual DIG, arising at the cervico-medullary junction, with diffuse leptomeningeal seeding at diagnosis that was treated with chemotherapy (CT) and delayed partial surgery. The case we describe demonstrates that DIG can occur in the subtentorial region and can show leptomeningeal dissemination like other low-grade gliomas., (2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)
