Using a bistable apparent-motion display, Odic and Pratt (2008, Perception 37 1790–1804) have recently presented data that they interpret as being inconsistent with what they call "the two-process theory". Instead, they argue, their data can be explained by the differential-activation theory along with a process they identify as "temporal summation of contrast". It is argued here that Odic and Pratt misinterpreted the two-process distinction and used a display that was too unusual to be adequately addressed by it. Further, their use of the differential-activation theory and, in particular, the temporal summation of contrast, seems problematic. Ponzo is a familiar name in psychology because of the illusion that takes his name. He had a long and productive career in Italy, and some of his work was translated for international journals already in his lifetime. However, few of these papers are available in English. We provide a commentary that considers how his name came to be associated with an illusion he did not discover. We explain the content of several papers, some of which are often cited in a wrong context in the literature (i.e., papers on touch mentioned in relation to the Ponzo illusion). More importantly, we discuss his contribution to the study of perceived numerosity, and provide a full translation of his important 1928 paper, including a redrawing of its 28 illustrations. The ability of 26 younger (mean age was 22.5 years) and older adults (mean age was 72.6 years) to haptically perceive material properties was evaluated. The participants manually explored (for 5 seconds) 42 surfaces twice and placed each of these 84 experimental stimuli into one of seven categories: paper, plastic, metal, wood, stone, fabric, and fur/leather. In general, the participants were best able to identify fur/leather and wood materials; in contrast, recognition performance was worst for stone and paper. Despite similar overall patterns of performance for younger and older participants, the younger adults' recognition accuracies were 26.5% higher. The participants' tactile acuities (assessed by tactile grating orientation discrimination) affected their ability to identify surface material. In particular, the Pearson r correlation coefficient relating the participants' grating orientation thresholds and their material identification performance was 0.8: The higher the participants' thresholds, the lower the material recognition ability. While older adults are able to effectively perceive the solid shape of environmental objects using the sense of touch, their ability to perceive surface materials is significantly compromised. Illusions are characterized by inconsistencies. For instance, in the motion aftereffect, we see motion without an equivalent change in position. We used a simple pencil-and-paper experiment to determine whether illusions that influence an object's apparent size give rise to equivalent changes in apparent positions along the object's outline. We found different results for two equally strong size illusions. The Ebbinghaus illusion affected perceived positions in a way that was consistent with its influence on perceived size, but a modified diagonal illusion did not affect perceived positions. This difference between the illusions might explain why there are so many conflicting reports about the effects of size illusions on the maximum grip aperture during reach-to-grasp movements. Esref Armagan is a blind painter. Cognitive and neural scientists have described his use of line structure when drawing and his visual cortex activation during tactile exploration. But what remains unknown is how Esref, without ever having sight, may be able to understand the use of depth cues such as relative size in a picture. To examine whether tactile experience provides information about relative size, we blindfolded sighted individuals and asked them to haptically explore a set of objects in either near or far locations before drawing the objects on paper. Objects explored with an arms extended position were drawn significantly smaller than those explored just in front of the face. Our results provide the first evidence that haptic object interaction can provide information about relative size, akin to that garnered visually. In typical figure-ground displays the figure has shape and is perceived as being in front, whereas the ground is shapeless and recedes to the back. The recent literature on the visual perception of holes has questioned the nature of this coupling between shape and depth both theoretically and empirically. In this paper we provide a theoretical framework that clarifies the underlying issues and we report new evidence supporting the view that the shape of a hole is perceived as the shape of its interior region. Palmer, Davis, Nelson, and Rock (2008 Perception, 37, 1569-1586) showed that the shape of the interior region of a hole is remembered as such, even though the surface visible through it is perceived as farther in depth. The present paper extends this evidence to perceiving holes. Participants performed a speeded shape-matching task in which they compared a surrounded interior region (of either a hole or an object) or its exterior complement with one of several shapes. The results indicate that holes are perceived as shaped in the same way as their material counterparts. We conclude that the shape of a hole is encoded as the shape of its interior region, even though that region contains no surface material. The theory of universal emotions suggests that certain emotions such as fear, anger, disgust, sadness, surprise and happiness can be encountered cross-culturally. These emotions are expressed using specific facial movements that enable human communication. More recently, theoretical and empirical models have been used to propose that universal emotions could be expressed via discretely different facial movements in different cultures due to the non-convergent social evolution that takes place in different geographical areas. This has prompted the consideration that own-culture emotional faces have distinct evolutionary important sociobiological value and can be processed automatically, and without conscious awareness. In this paper, we tested this hypothesis using backward masking. We showed, in two different experiments per country of origin, to participants in Britain, Chile, New Zealand and Singapore, backward masked own and other-culture emotional faces. We assessed detection and recognition performance, and self-reports for emotionality and familiarity. We presented thorough cross-cultural experimental evidence that when using Bayesian assessment of non-parametric receiver operating characteristics and hit-versus-miss detection and recognition response analyses, masked faces showing own cultural dialects of emotion were rated higher for emotionality and familiarity compared to other-culture emotional faces and that this effect involved conscious awareness. This paper traces the history of the visual receptive field (RF) from Hartline to Hubel and Wiesel. Hartline (1938, 1940) found that an isolated optic nerve fiber in the frog could be excited by light falling on a small circular area of the retina. He called this area the RF, using a term first introduced by Sherrington (1906) in the tactile domain. In 1953 Kuffler discovered the antagonistic center–surround organization of cat RFs, and Barlow, Fitzhugh, and Kuffler (1957) extended this work to stimulus size and state of adaptation. Shortly thereafter, Lettvin and colleagues (1959) in an iconic paper asked “what the frog's eye tells the frog's brain”. Meanwhile, Jung and colleagues (1952–1973) searched for the perceptual correlates of neuronal responses, and Jung and Spillmann (1970) proposed the term perceptive field (PF) as a psychophysical correlate of the RF. The Westheimer function (1967) enabled psychophysical measurements of the PF center and surround in human and monkey, which correlated closely with the underlying RF organization. The sixties and seventies were marked by rapid progress in RF research. Hubel and Wiesel (1959–1974), recording from neurons in the visual cortex of the cat and monkey, found elongated RFs selective for the shape, orientation, and position of the stimulus, as well as for movement direction and ocularity. These findings prompted the emergence in visual psychophysics of the concept of feature detectors selective for lines, bars, and edges, and contributed to a model of the RF in terms of difference of Gaussians (DOG) and Fourier channels. The distinction between simple, complex, and hypercomplex neurons followed. Although RF size increases towards the peripheral retina, its cortical representation remains constant due to the reciprocal relationship with the cortical magnification factor (M). This constitutes a uniform yardstick for M-scaled stimuli across the retina. Developmental studies have shown that RF properties are not fixed. RFs possess their full response inventory already at birth, but require the interaction with appropriate stimuli within a critical time window for refinement and consolidation. Taken together these findings paved the way for a better understanding of how objective properties of the external world are encoded to become subjective properties of the subjective, perceptual world. This case study is an initial exploration as to whether the depiction of texture in a set of portraits, all portraying the same Sitter, is related to the familiar likeness assessments reported in a companion paper containing a principal component analysis (PCA) of the portraits' depiction of shape. Somewhat unexpectedly, a texture PCA failed to discriminate the high from low likeness portraits, despite experimentation with different pre-processing methods to reduce the portraits' high level of uninformative, image-level texture variability. There were some findings arising from these analyses, and while only indicative at this stage, include that linear histogram matching is effective in reducing variability in portrait brightness; that depicting, and perhaps exaggerating, shading relating to lighting direction may enhance portrait likeness; and, that whether minimised or exaggerated, lighting direction can be portrayed somewhat anomalously. Furthermore, and in agreement with findings from photographs, shape and texture were not found to be independent variables, and shape-free image registration, while very usefully enabling a comparison of closely corresponding pixel coordinate values, could itself be a confounding factor for undertaking a texture PCA with portraits produced under relatively ambient conditions. Successful performance on the water-level task, a common measure of spatial perception, requires adopting an environmental, rather than object-centered, spatial frame of reference. Use of this strategy has not been systematically studied in prepubertal children, a developmental period during which individual differences in spatial abilities start to emerge. In this study, children aged 8 to 11 reported their age and gender, completed a paper-and-pencil water-level task, and drew a map of their neighborhood to assess spontaneous choice of spatial frame of reference. Results showed a surprising lack of age or gender difference in water-level performance, but a significant effect of spatial frame of reference. Although they made up only a small portion of the sample, children who drew allocentric maps had the highest water-level score, with very high accuracy. These results suggest that children who adopt environmental-based reference frames when depicting their familiar environment may also use environmental-based reference frame strategies to solve spatial perception tasks, thereby facilitating highly accurate performance. Visual illusions have been a popular topic of study for a long time, but in recent years, a number of authors have questioned the coherence of this notion. This article deals in depth with ways in which illusions have been, could be, and should be defined and with various criticisms and different conceptions of the notion of illusions. After a review of definitions of illusions in the relevant literature, a more comprehensive but also more restrictive framework is presented, involving both veridicality and illusoriness, and is illustrated using two variants of a 2 × 2 scheme for the presentation of illusions. Many different aspects of illusions are discussed. A set of criteria for illusionhood is listed. Criticisms of the notion of illusions are presented, commented upon, and responded to. Conceptions of illusions differing from the one advocated here are discussed. Throughout the paper, novel variations of illusions are shown, and problems with accounts of some well-known illusions are noted. Examples of strong context effects which are not considered to be illusions are presented. It is concluded that the notion of visual illusions, suitably reformulated, is still viable. Measurements of psychophysical performance show that the visual system is biased in ways that counteract statistical regularities of natural scenes thereby allowing efficient coding. Here we consider the perceptual effects of these encoding biases in a “holistic” way by measuring characteristics of the paintings produced by artists making perceptual matches to a natural scene image; 10 artists were asked to produce an exact copy of a single outdoor landscape scene. The structural content of the paintings produced and the “ground truth” image were compared in the frequency domain. The artists were found to over-regularize the orientation content in the paintings: The anisotropy existing only at the lowest spatial scales in the natural scene image was produced across all spatial scales in these commissioned paintings. These results were compared to those from two other methods of comparing paintings and natural scenes reported previously in a companion paper and all three methodologies indicate very similar over-regularization. Flicker and patterns of stripes in the modern environment can evoke visual illusions, discomfort migraine, and seizures. We measured reading speed while striped and less striped texts were illuminated with LED lights. In Experiment 1, the lights flickered at 60 Hz and 120 Hz compared to 60 kHz (perceived as steady light). In Experiment 2, the lights flickered at 60 Hz or 600 Hz (at which frequency the phantom array is most visible), and were compared to continuous light. Two types of text were used: one containing words with high horizontal autocorrelation (striped) and another containing words with low autocorrelation (less striped). We measured the number of illusions participants saw in the Pattern Glare (PG) Test. Overall, reading speed was slowest during the 60 Hz and 600 Hz flicker and was slower when reading the high autocorrelation text. Interestingly, the low PG group showed greater effects of flicker on reading speed than the high PG group, which tended to be slower overall. In addition, reading speed in the high PG group was reduced when the autocorrelation of the text was high. These findings suggest that uncomfortable visual environments reduce reading efficiency, the more so in individuals who are visually sensitive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to investigate the perception of loudness in response to changes in fundamental frequency (F0) in spoken sounds, as well as the influence of linguistic background on this perceptual process. The results revealed that participants perceived changes in F0 to have accompanying changes in loudness, with a trend of lower F0 sounds being perceived as louder than higher F0 sounds. This finding contrasts with previous studies on pure tones, where increases in frequency typically led to increases in loudness. Furthermore, the study examined differences between two distinct groups of participants: Chinese-speaking and English-speaking individuals. It was observed that English-speaking participants exhibited a greater sensitivity to minor intensity changes compared to Chinese-speaking participants. This discrepancy in sensitivity suggests that linguistic background may play a significant role in shaping the perception of loudness in spoken sound. The study's findings contribute to our understanding of how F0 variations are perceived in terms of loudness, and highlight the potential impact of language experience on this perceptual process. This paper is about the Poggendorff illusion in pictorial artworks. In particular, it deals with the role played by the Poggendorff illusion in the making of the geometrical misalignments in the mosaic known as Lunetta di San Lorenzo in Ravenna (Italy) and in Rubens's oil on panel Descent from the Cross in Antwerp (Belgium). Three experiments are presented. Experiment 1 tested the role of viewing distance in perceived collinearity in the mosaic by asking participants to adjust two ends of a cross in silhouette renderings of the saint projected so to mimic its original size. Results confirm an effect of viewing distance and support the hypothesis that the author of the mosaic became aware of the illusion and attempted to 'fix' it. Experiment 2 aimed at verifying perceived collinearity in a book-size version of Rubens's Descent from the Cross by employing a similar adjustment method. Results demonstrate that the Poggendorff illusion affects perceived collinearity in the painting, but perceptual collinearity does not agree with the actual geometrical misalignment in book-size reproductions of the masterpiece. Experiment 3 tested the role of viewing distance in a classic Poggendorff illusion configuration by employing the same setup as in experiment 1. Contrary to what was found in experiment 1, viewing distance did not modulate the magnitude of the illusion in the classic display, suggesting that the outcome of perceived collinearity is sensitive to the complexity of the visual scene. The difference in results between experiments 1 and 3 underscore the necessity of new tests before any reasonable conclusion can be drawn about the whys and wherefores of Rubens's misalignment. The paper presents a phenomenal investigation of monocular perception of perspectival reversal of a conical shell. The inverted shell is seen as shorter than the stimulus, and both relative size of elements within it and movement within it appear to be affected by reversal. In a previous paper we documented that sighted participants complete haptic tasks faster with two hands and multiple fingers, but that these benefits are task specific. The present study investigates whether these effects are the same for participants who are blind. We compared the performance of fourteen blind participants on seven tactile-map tasks using seven finger conditions. As with sighted participants, blind participants performed all tasks faster with multiple fingers. Line-tracing tasks were faster with fingers added to an already in-use hand, and sometimes when added to the second hand. Local and global search tasks were faster with multiple fingers and two hands. Distance comparison tasks were performed faster with multiple fingers, but not two hands. Lastly, moving in a straight line was faster with multiple fingers. These results reinforce our previous finding that the haptic system performs best when it can exploit the independence of multiple fingers. Furthermore, in every instance that an effect was different between sighted and blind participants, the blind participants benefitted more from two hands or multiple fingers than the sighted participants. Interest in geometric illusions in architectural design was restimulated in the 1970s by the publication of a paper by Gregory and Heard on the Café Wall illusion. Illusory patterns have been used in urban design for centuries. This brief note identifies two further examples of urban illusions found in Alicante, Spain and suggests that they may represent currently the longest examples of urban geometric illusion in the world. The article discusses a 43rd European Conference on Visual Perception (ECVP) 2021 Online "Workshop on Sensory and Perceptual Processes" that was held in Marburg, Germany in 1978 and organized by Dick Cavonius, John Mollon, Ingo Rentschler and Lothar Spillmann. Second meeting was held in Noordwijkerhout in the Netherlands and that established the practice of holding an ECVP meeting in a different European town or city and organized by academics and researchers in the local University.

Vittorio Benussi (1878–1927) is known for numerous studies on optical illusions, visual and haptic perception, spatial and time perception. In Padova, he had a brilliant student who carefully worked on the topic of how people estimate numerosity, Silvia De Marchi (1897–1936). Her writings have never been translated into English before. Here we comment on her work and life, characterized also by the challenges faced by women in academia. The studies on perception of numerosity from her thesis were published as an article in 1929. We provide a translation from Italian, a redrawing of its 23 illustrations and of the graphs. Our percept of the world is not solely determined by what we perceive and process at a given moment in time, but also depends on what we processed recently. In the present study, we investigate whether the perceived emotion of a spoken sentence is contingent upon the emotion of an auditory stimulus on the preceding trial (i.e., serial dependence). Thereto, participants were exposed to spoken sentences that varied in emotional affect by changing the prosody that ranged from 'happy' to 'fearful'. Participants were instructed to rate the emotion. We found a positive serial dependence for emotion processing whereby the perceived emotion was biased towards the emotion on the preceding trial. When we introduced 'no-go' trials (i.e., no rating was required), we found a negative serial dependence when participants knew in advance to withhold their response on a given trial (Experiment 2) and a positive serial dependence when participants received the information to withhold their response after the stimulus presentation (Experiment 3). We therefore established a robust serial dependence for emotion processing in speech and introduce a methodology to disentangle perceptual from post-perceptual processes. During the global COVID-19 pandemic, the wearing of face masks became a common practice, raising questions about how masks affect perceptions of and behaviour towards others. Numerous studies have explored the impact of face masks on perceptions of trustworthiness, but results have been mixed and it remains unclear whether masks influence perceptions via their social meaning or their effects on facial appearance. In this study, Australian participants (N = 363) rated a series of faces which were either masked, unmasked, or occluded by a non-mask object (computer) in terms of perceived trustworthiness in 2020, 2022, or 2023. The apparent trustworthiness of unmasked faces remained stable across years, but masked faces were rated significantly more trustworthy in 2020 compared to 2022 and 2023. Furthermore, ratings of masked faces, but not unmasked faces, were correlated with participants' attitudes towards wearing masks. Faces occluded by a non-mask object were perceived to be less trustworthy than masked faces. Together, results strongly suggest the increase in perceived trustworthiness of masked faces reported in numerous studies conducted during COVID-19 were driven by positive social meanings around mask wearing rather than by their effect on facial appearance. A form of repetition blindness in visually unimpaired individuals was found for objects presented during saccades. Observers were asked to draw their percepts after making saccades across an LED strip that "painted" an image on their retinas by presenting sequential columns of a bitmap at a speed to match a 30-degree saccade. During experimental trials, repetitions of a single letter (either "A," "X," "H," or "V") were presented across saccades. Although an average of six letters were presented across each saccade, observers typically indicated perceiving only a single instance of the letter in their drawings. This inability to perceive multiple instances of a letter was not due to a limited region of attentional processing, as it only attained for multiple instances along the axis of the saccade—horizontal saccades did not affect perception of multiple letters along the vertical axis. This study investigates the crossmodal associations between naturally occurring sound textures and tactile textures. Previous research has demonstrated the association between low-level sensory features of sound and touch, as well as higher-level, cognitively mediated associations involving language, emotions, and metaphors. However, stimuli like textures, which are found in both modalities have received less attention. In this study, we conducted two experiments: a free association task and a two alternate forced choice task using everyday tactile textures and sound textures selected from natural sound categories. The results revealed consistent crossmodal associations reported by participants between the textures of the two modalities. They tended to associate more sound textures (e.g., wood shavings and sandpaper) with tactile surfaces that were rated as harder, rougher, and intermediate on the sticky-slippery scale. While some participants based the auditory-tactile association on sensory features, others made the associations based on semantic relationships, co-occurrence in nature, and emotional mediation. Interestingly, the statistical features of the sound textures (mean, variance, kurtosis, power, autocorrelation, and correlation) did not show significant correlations with the crossmodal associations, indicating a higher-level association. Changes in subjective sensory sensitivity – reporting sensory stimuli as being atypically intense or weak – are a transdiagnostic symptom of several disorders. The present study documents for the first time the sensory sensitivity profile of fibromyalgia, taking a questionnaire measure that asks about different sensory modalities and both hyper- and hyposensitivity (the Glasgow Sensory Questionnaire, GSQ). The fibromyalgia group had higher overall scores on this measure. This was linked more strongly to sensory hypersensitivity and was pervasive across all senses that were surveyed. Although differences in hyposensitivity were found, these were sporadic (perhaps linked to the symptoms of fibromyalgia itself) and did not resemble the pattern documented for autism (e.g., self-stimulating and repetitive behaviours were not a feature of fibromyalgia). We suggest that individual differences in subjective sensory hypersensitivity may be a multisensory dispositional trait linked to fibromyalgia which ultimately becomes most pronounced for pain. Embodied cognition contends that sensorimotor experiences undergird cognitive processes. Three embodied cross-domain metaphorical mappings constitute quintessential illustrations: spatial navigation and orientation underpin the conceptualization of time and emotion and gustatory sensation underlies the formulation of emotion. Threading together these strands of insights, the present research consisted of three studies explored the potential influence of spicy taste on people's metaphorical perspectives on time. The results revealed a positive correlation between spicy taste and the ego-moving metaphor for time such that individuals who enjoyed spicy taste (Study 1) and who consumed spicy (vs. salty) snack (Study 2) exhibited a predilection for the ego-moving perspective when cognizing a temporally ambiguous event. Because both spicy taste and the ego-moving metaphor are associated with anger and approach motivation, the latter two were postulated to be related to the novel taste-time relationship. Corroborative evidence for the hypothesis was found, which indicated that spicy (vs. salty) intake elicited significantly stronger anger toward and significantly greater approach-motivated perception of a rescheduled temporal event (Study 3). Taken together, the current findings demonstrate that spicy taste may play a role in people's perspectives on the movement of events in time and highlight the involved embodied interrelation between language, emotion, and cognition. Pattern recognition is a defining characteristic of expertise across multiple domains. Given the dynamic interactions at local and global levels, team sports can provide a vehicle for investigating skilled pattern recognition. The aims of this study were to investigate whether global patterns could be recognised on the basis of localised relational information and if relations between certain display features were more important than others for successful pattern recognition. Elite (n = 20), skilled (n = 34) and less-skilled (n = 37) soccer players completed three recognition paradigms of stimuli presented in point-light format across three counterbalanced conditions: 'whole-part'; 'part-whole'; and 'whole-whole'. 'Whole' clips represented a 11 vs. 11 soccer match and 'part' clips presented the same passages of play with only two central attacking players or two peripheral players shown. Elite players recognised significantly more accurately than the skilled and less-skilled groups. In this paper, I investigate conceptual categories derived from developmental processing in a deep neural network. The similarity matrices of deep representation at each layer of neural network are computed and compared with their raw representation. While the clusters generated by raw representation stand at the basic level of abstraction, conceptual categories obtained from deep representation shows a bottom-up transition procedure. We report a large study (n = 72) using combined transcranial direct current stimulation-electroencephalography (tDCS-EEG) to investigate the modulation of perceptual learning indexed by the face inversion effect. Participants were engaged with an old/new recognition task involving intermixed upright and inverted, normal and Thatcherized faces. The accuracy results showed anodal tDCS delivered at the Fp3 scalp area (cathode/reference electrode placed at Fp2) increased the behavioural inversion effect for normal faces versus sham/control and this covaried with a modulation of the N170 event-related potential component. A reduced inversion effect for normal faces was found on the N170 latency and amplitude versus sham/control, extending recent work that combined tDCS and EEG in circumstances where the behavioural face inversion effect was reduced. Our results advance understanding of the neural mechanisms responsible for perceptual learning by revealing a dissociation between the N170 amplitude and latency in response to the tDCS-induced modulation of the face inversion effect. The behavioural modulation of the inversion effect tracks the modulation of the N170 amplitudes, albeit it is negatively correlated (i.e., reduced inversion effect—larger N170 amplitude inversion effect, increased inversion effect—reduced N170 amplitude inversion effect). During coordinated flight and centrifugation, pilots show interindividual variability in perceived roll tilt. The study explored how this variability is related to perceptual and cognitive functions. Twelve pilots underwent three 6-min centrifugations on two occasions (G levels: 1.1G, 1.8G, and 2.5G; gondola tilts: 25°, 56°, and 66°). The subjective visual horizontal (SVH) was measured with an adjustable luminous line and the pilots gave estimates of experienced G level. Afterward, they were interrogated regarding the relationship between G level and roll tilt and adjusted the line to numerically mentioned angles. Generally, the roll tilt during centrifugation was underestimated, and there was a large interindividual variability. Both knowledge on the relationship between G level and bank angle, and ability to adjust the line according to given angles contributed to the prediction of SVH in a multiple regression model.
