Consumers exert considerable time, energy, and financial resources toward achieving weight and body shape goals. However, weight management behaviors often become maladaptive (i.e., more harmful than helpful) and lead to increased chances for negative mental and physical results. An online panel (n = 412; M age = 45.49; SD age = 16.64; 61.4% female) was surveyed to assess how implicit mindset moderates the relationship between perfectionistic concern (self-criticism when the self is perceived to fall short of valued standards), perfectionistic striving (insistence on pursuing and achieving excessively high performance standards), and maladaptive weight management behaviors. This pre-registered study demonstrates that consumers high on perfectionistic concern who also hold a more growth implicit mindset engage in more maladaptive behavior; consumers who hold a more fixed implicit mindset engage in less maladaptive behavior regardless of their perfectionism. Importantly, our results indicate that high perfectionistic striving acts as an amplifier, enhancing implicit mindset's moderation of the relationship between perfectionistic concern and maladaptive behavior. We further demonstrate that this effect is most pronounced for maladaptive weight management behaviors which require greater persistence, such as cognitive restraint, excessive exercise, and muscle building. Abstract: We modeled work performance as outcomes of individual-differences mediated by technical performance. Beyond the “usual suspects” (e.g., general mental ability, and personality), we also measured the ethical development of participants (n =460). We surmised that ethical development – which has not been extensively studied as a predictor of work performance while controlling for established predictors – captures unique variance in both technical and work performance. Results demonstrated incremental validity for ethical development in predicting technical performance, which in turn predicted work performance. The indirect effect of ethical development was significant too. Our results highlight the importance of process models of performance, which include proximal as well as distal individual differences. Abstract: This research presents theoretical and empirical evidence to show the usefulness of a moderated mediation model to test individual differences in Behavioural Approach System in the prediction of workplace performance. We consider mastery approach orientation as the mediator in the relationship between Behavioural Approach System (BAS) and work performance. Additionally, we examined the moderated effect of a rewarding climate on the indirect effect of BAS in the prediction of work performance. Results from 123 supervisors’ ratings of employees’ work performance supported the model whereby the indirect effect of BAS on work performance via mastery orientation was strongest when the psychological climate of the organization was also rewarding. This model further advances our understanding of how individual differences in conjunction with contextual factors may influence work-related behaviour. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Although investigators have suggested that maladaptive appraisal of interpersonal situations may be related to perfectionist characteristics of socially anxious persons, little research has addressed this notion. In this study, the joint role of social anxiety and socially prescribed perfectionism (SPP; Hewitt & Flett, 1991a) was assessed relative to participants’ appraisal of an interpersonal situation. Results showed that social anxiety and SPP were related with the discrepancy between participants’ ratings of others’ performance standards for them and ratings of their own self-efficacy for an upcoming conversation, and that SPP moderated the relationship between social anxiety and the discrepancy. Second, only social anxiety was related with the frequency of negative self-statements; however, SPP moderated the relationship between social anxiety and participants’ negative self-statements relative to the conversation. For both interactions, the greater an anxious person’s SPP, the greater their degree of maladaptive appraisal. Results are discussed relative to theoretical and clinical implications of the findings. Perfectionistic concerns about the discrepancy between one's standards and performance are associated with several problematic interpersonal and emotional outcomes. The degree to which discrepancy as a form of perfectionism, as well as personal standards as a form of perfectionism, relate to one's willingness to talk about one's distress to others have been underexplored. Our study examined the association between perfectionism and distress disclosure tendencies and also anticipated disclosure in response to several stressful, hypothetical events. College students (N = 325) completed measures via an online survey. Regression analyses revealed that discrepancy (but not personal standards) was negatively related to distress disclosure tendencies. Multilevel modeling indicated that discrepancy was associated with lower anticipated disclosure of negative, hypothetical events, but discrepancy did not interact with the intensity of the event. This research provides novel findings concerning the association between discrepancy and emotional disclosure, and it suggests that personal standards has a minimal role in the disclosure of distress. • We examined the relation between perfectionism and disclosure of distress. • Discrepancy (between standards and performance) was associated with lower distress disclosure tendencies. • Discrepancy was also associated with lower anticipated disclosure of hypothetical events.
