The single ion magnetic anisotropy of S-state transition metal ions (3d 5 ) in wurtzite diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is studied from a microscopic point of view. Starting from a hamiltonian including Coulomb, spin-orbit and effective crystal field interactions, the axial spin hamiltonian parameter is calculated by using an exact diagonalization method. Application to some Mn-doped DMS validates the model.
