We perform direct thermovoltage measurements in a single-electron transistor, using on-chip local thermometers, both in the linear and non-linear regimes. Using a model which accounts for co-tunneling, we find excellent agreement with the experimental data with no free parameters even when the temperature difference is larger than the average temperature (far-from-linear regime). This allows us to confirm the sensitivity of the thermovoltage on co-tunneling and to find that in the non-linear regime the temperature of the metallic island is a crucial parameter. Surprisingly, the metallic island tends to overheat even at zero net charge current, resulting in a reduction of the thermovoltage., 10 pages, 4 figures

We propose a method to perform accurate and fast charge pumping in superconducting nanocircuits. Combining topological properties and quantum control techniques based on shortcuts to adiabaticity, we show that it is theoretically possible to achieve perfectly quantised charge pumping at any finite-speed driving. Model-specific errors may still arise due the difficulty of implementing the exact control. We thus assess this and other practical issues in a specific system comprised of three Josephson junctions. Using realistic system parameters, we show that our scheme can improve the pumping accuracy of this device by various orders of magnitude. Critical points and phase transitions are characterized by diverging susceptibilities, reflecting the tendency of the system toward spontaneous symmetry breaking. Equilibrium statistical mechanics bounds these instabilities to occur at zero frequency, giving rise to static order parameters. In this work we introduce a new class of dynamical transitions in a quantum many body system far from thermal equilibrium, characterized by a susceptibility diverging at a finite non-zero frequency, an emerging scale set by interactions and non-equilibrium effects. In the broken-symmetry phase the corresponding macroscopic order parameter becomes non-stationary and oscillates in time without damping, thus breaking continuous time-translational symmetry. Our results, obtained for a paradigmatic model of bosons interacting on lattice in prensence of drive and dissipation, are relevant for the upcoming generation of circuit QED arrays experiments and outline a generic framework to study time-domain instabilities in non-equilibrium quantum systems, including Floquet time crystals and quantum synchronization., 10 pages, 8 figures

We analyze a simple implementation of an absorption refrigerator, a system that requires heat and not work to achieve refrigeration, based on two Coulomb coupled single-electron systems. We analytically determine the general condition to achieve cooling-by-heating, and we determine the system parameters that simultaneously maximize the cooling power and cooling coefficient of performance (COP) finding that the system displays a particularly simple COP that can reach Carnot's upper limit. We also find that the cooling power can be indirectly determined by measuring a charge current. Analyzing the system as an autonomous Maxwell demon, we find that the highest efficiencies for information creation and consumption can be achieved, and we relate the COP to these efficiencies. Finally, we propose two possible experimental setups based on quantum dots or metallic islands that implement the non-trivial cooling condition. Using realistic parameters, we show that these systems, which resemble existing experimental setups, can develop an observable cooling power., 11 pages, 6 figures

We propose a generalization of the linked-cluster expansions to study driven-dissipative quantum lattice models, directly accessing the thermodynamic limit of the system. Our method leads to the evaluation of the desired extensive property onto small connected clusters of a given size and topology. We first test this approach on the isotropic spin-1/2 Hamiltonian in two dimensions, where each spin is coupled to an independent environment that induces incoherent spin flips. Then we apply it to the study of an anisotropic model displaying a dissipative phase transition from a magnetically ordered to a disordered phase. By means of a Pad\'e analysis on the series expansions for the average magnetization, we provide a viable route to locate the phase transition and to extrapolate the critical exponent for the magnetic susceptibility., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

In this paper we report a relaxation-induced suppression of the noise for a single level quantum dot coupled to an oscillator with incoherent dynamics in the sequential tunneling regime. It is shown that relaxation induces qualitative changes in the transport properties of the dot, depending on the strength of the electron-phonon coupling and on the applied voltage. In particular, critical thresholds in voltage and relaxation are found such that a suppression below 1/2 of the Fano factor is possible. Additionally, the current is either enhanced or suppressed by increasing relaxation, depending on bias being greater or smaller than the above threshold.
