Abstract

Artículo escrito por un elevado número de autores, solo se referencian el que aparece en primer lugar, el nombre del grupo de colaboración, si le hubiere, y los autores pertenecientes a la UAM, Three-jet production in deep inelastic ep scattering and photoproduction was investigated with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of up to 127pb-1. Measurements of differential cross sections are presented as functions of angular correlations between the three jets in the final state and the proton-beam direction. These correlations provide a stringent test of perturbative QCD and show sensitivity to the contributions from different color configurations. Fixed-order perturbative calculations assuming the values of the color factors CF, CA, and TF as derived from a variety of gauge groups were compared to the measurements to study the underlying gauge group symmetry. Abstract

Cross sections are presented for the inclusive production of {Lambda} hyperons in electron-positron annihilations at {radical}{ital s} =29 GeV based on the full 291-pb{sup {minus}1} sample of data taken in the High Resolution Spectrometer experiment at the SLAC {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{minus} storage ring PEP. These results, and the associated correlation analyses, are consistent with the Lund model predictions with the strange diquark suppression ratio {delta} fixed at 0.59{plus minus}0.10{plus minus}0.18, as compared to the standard Lund value of 0.32. The {Lambda} multiplicity has been found to be 0.182{plus minus}0.020 per event. The opposite-strangeness multiplicity {l angle}{ital n}{sub {Lambda}}{Lambda}{bar a}{r angle} has been measured to be 0.046{plus minus}0.020, whereas the like-strangeness multiplicity {l angle}{ital n}{sub {Lambda}{Lambda}}+{bar {Lambda}}{bar {Lambda}}{r angle} is 0.009{plus minus}0.028. A strong correlation is found between {Lambda}'s and {bar {Lambda}} 's; when one is found in an event, the other is found in the same event with a probability that exceeds 50%.

Abstract

Intranuclear rescattering rates are determined for low energy pions created within neon nuclei by muon neutrinos with energies between 0.4 and 6.0 GeV. Specifically, charged current ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$-neon and ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$-deuteron interactions from two accelerator bubble chamber experiments are ${E}_{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ weighted to match the shape of the atmospheric neutrino spectrum. The relative populations of final states within the weighted event samples imply rates for pion absorption and pion charge exchange, which expressed as probabilities per final state pion, are 0.22\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05 and 0.10\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08, respectively. Inclusive ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ momenta and production angle distributions from neon are found to be similar to those from deuteron targets; sizable kinematic distortions attributable to inelastic rescattering are absent. However, the fraction of ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+} ({\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ momenta in neon which are less than 300 MeV/c and backward in the laboratory system slightly exceeds the deuteron fraction, by 0.03\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04 (0.11\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.10). Our measurements indicate the extent to which pion intranuclear rescattering may distort final states resulting from atmospheric neutrino reactions or from nucleon decays in nuclei having mass number near $A=20$.

Abstract

This paper reports a new measurement of the branching ratio for the decay {tau}{sup {minus}}{r arrow}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{bar {nu}}{sub {ital e}}{nu}{sub {tau}}. The data were taken with the High Resolution Spectrometer at the SLAC {ital {ital e}}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} colliding-beam facility PEP, operating at {radical}{ital s}=29 GeV. The result {ital B}({tau}{sup {minus}}{r arrow}{ital e}{sup {minus}}{bar {nu}}{sub {ital e}}{nu}{sub {tau}})=(17.0{plus minus}0.5{plus minus}0.5)%, together with our measurements of the lifetime and the topological branching fractions of the {tau} lepton are compared with theoretical expectations.

Abstract

Cross sections for e(+)p neutral current deep inelastic scattering have been measured at a center-of-mass energy of roots=318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 63.2 pb(-1). The double-differential cross section, d(2)sigma/dxdQ(2), is presented for 200 GeV2 lt Q(2) lt 30 000 GeV2 and for 0.005 lt x lt 0.65. The single- differential cross sections dsigma/dQ(2), dsigma/dx and dsigma/dy are presented for Q(2) gt 200 GeV2. The effect of Z- boson-exchange is seen in dsigma/dx measured for Q(2) gt 10 000 GeV2. The data presented here were combined with ZEUS e(+)p neutral current data taken at roots=300 GeV and the structure function F-2(em) was extracted. All results agree well with the predictions of the Standard Model.

Abstract

The photoproduction of bottom quarks in events with two jets and a muon has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 110 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$. The fraction of jets containing b quarks was extracted from the transverse momentum distribution of the muon relative to the closest jet. Differential cross sections for bottom production as a function of the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the muon, of the associated jet and of ${x}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\mathrm{jets}},$ the fraction of the photon's momentum participating in the hard process, are compared with MC models and QCD predictions made at next-to-leading order. The latter give a good description of the data.

Abstract

A study of the $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$-jet mass spectrum in ${e}^{+}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}X$ events at a center-of-mass energy 300 GeV has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider at DESY using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}.$ The mass spectrum is in good agreement with that expected from standard model processes over the $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$-jet mass range studied. No significant excess attributable to the decay of a narrow resonance is observed. By using both ${e}^{+}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{e}^{+}X$ and ${e}^{+}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}X$ data, mass-dependent limits are set on the s-channel production of scalar and vector resonant states. Couplings to first-generation quarks are considered and limits are presented as a function of the ${e}^{+}q$ and $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}q$ branching ratios. These limits are used to constrain the production of leptoquarks and R-parity violating squarks.

Abstract

Data from the ANL 12-foot bubble chamber have been used to study the K-bar/sup 0/..pi../sup -/ system in the reaction K/sup -/p..-->..K-bar/sup 0/p..pi../sup -/ at 6.5 GeV/c. Signals for the production of K*(892), K*(1430), and K*(1780) were observed with cross sections of 181 +- 22, 41.2 +- 6, and 8.4 +- 2.9 ..mu..b, respectively. The partial waves contributing to the production of the K-bar/sup 0/..pi../sup -/ system from threshold up to 1.7 GeV were studied. The principal conclusions are: (i) K*(892) and K*(1430) production is dominated by natural-parity exchange, (ii) the ratio of unnatural- to natural-parity exchange increases with the resonance mass, consistent with the predictions of a triple-Regge model, (iii) there is evidence for a broad 0/sup +/ s-wave enhancement, with considerable s-d and s-p interference, centered at 1.2 GeV, and (iv) the m=2 amplitudes are negligible.

Abstract

We use ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}$-deuteron reactions into exclusive multipion final states to determine the extent to which atmospheric $\ensuremath{\nu}$ interactions can imitate nucleon decay. For decays $N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{l}^{c}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{c}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{c} ({l}^{c}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{c}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{c}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0})$, neutrinos induce background events at the rate 0.07\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06 (0.03\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02) per kiloton year. By requiring a multipion final state to be consistent with a $\ensuremath{\rho}$, $\ensuremath{\omega}$, or $\ensuremath{\eta}$, a fivefold reduction of the background is obtained. Thus presentgeneration experiments are capable of searching for such decays at a lifetime level corresponding to many kiloton years of detector exposure.

Abstract

Inclusive V/sup 0/ production in 6.5-GeV/c K/sup -/p interactions is studied using the ANL 12-ft-diameter hydrogen bubble chamber. The total cross sections for inclusive K-bar/sup 0/ and ..lambda../sup 0/ production are sigma (K-bar/sup 0/) = 7.98 +- 0.49 mb and sigma (..lambda../sup 0/) = 3.94 +- 0.24 mb. Semi-inclusive differential cross sections are determined as functions of Feynman x and transverse momentum squared of the V/sup 0/'s, and of four-momentum transfer to the V/sup 0/. The average charge multiplicity, the ratio /D, and the correlation function f/sub 2//sup cc/ for the neutrally charged hadronic system recoiling from the V/sup 0/ are determined as functions of the mass of the recoiling system. Results are used to examine universal aspects of multiparticle production.

Abstract

This paper gives a detailed description of an experiment which studies the interactions of muon-type neutrinos in hydrogen and deuterium. The experiment was performed at the Zero Gradient Synchrotron using the wide-band neutrino beam incident on the Argonne 12-foot bubble chamber filled with hydrogen and deuterium. The neutrino energy spectrum peaks at 0.5 GeV and has a tail extending to 6 GeV. The shape and intensity of the flux is determined using measurements of pion yields from beryllium. The produced pions are focused by one or (for the latter part of the experiment) two magnetic horns. A total of 364000 pictures were taken with a hydrogen filling of the bubble chamber and 903 000 with a deuterium filling. The scanning and other analyses of the events are described. The most abundant reaction occurs off neutrons and is quasi-elastic scattering $\ensuremath{\nu}d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p{p}_{s}$. The separation of these events from background channels is discussed. The total and differential cross sections are analyzed to obtain the axial-vector form factor of the nucleon. Our result, expressed in terms of a dipole form factor, gives an axial-vector mass of 0.95\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.09 GeV. A comparison is made to previous measurements using neutrino beams, and also to determinations based upon threshold pion electroproduction experiments. In addition, the data are used to measure the weak vector form factor and so check the conserved-vector-current hypothesis.

We have measured the polarization of the ..lambda.. hyperon produced in the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. K/sup 0/..lambda.. at 3 and 5 GeV/c, for four-momentum transfers t' out to 1.6 GeV/sup 2/, by observing the parity-violating decay ..lambda.. ..-->.. p..pi../sup -/. With an increase in statistical power by a factor of 3 to 4 over the best previous experiments in this energy range, we confirm earlier observations that the polarization is small and positive below t'=0.4 GeV/sup 2/, becoming large and positive for larger values of t'. In particular, at 5 GeV/c for all t' between 0.8 and 1.6 GeV/sup 2/ the polarization is consistent with a value of -1.

Abstract

Data from the High Resolution Spectrometer at the SLAC storage ring PEP have been used to study the inclusive production of baryons and mesons. Time-of-flight measurements are used to identify the charged hadrons. Neutral hadrons are identified from effective-mass peaks associated with their decay into two charged particles. Cross sections and other inclusive production characteristics are presented for ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$, ${K}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$, and ${K}^{0}$ (K${\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}^{0}$) mesons, and for the baryons (antibaryons) p (p\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}) and \ensuremath{\Lambda} (\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}). The ratio of the inclusive cross section to the point cross section for the ${K}^{0}$ and K${\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}^{0}$ mesons is R(${K}^{0}$,K${\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}}^{0}$)=6.15\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.25, and for \ensuremath{\Lambda} and \ensuremath{\Lambda}\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{}, R(\ensuremath{\Lambda},\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{})=0.846\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.036\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.085. The neutral-hadron differential cross sections are compared with the predictions of the Lund string model.

Abstract

In this paper, results are presented from a study of the hadronic final states in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at 29 GeV. The data were obtained with the High Resolution Spectrometer (HRS) at the SLAC PEP e/sup +/e/sup -/ colliding-beam facility. The results are based on 6342 selected events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 pb/sup -1/. The distributions of the events in sphericity (S), thrust (T), and aplanarity (A) are given and compared to other e/sup +/e/sup -/ data in the same energy range. We measure = 0.130 +- 0.003 +- 0.010 and = 0.100 +- 0.002. The sphericity distribution is compared to sphericity measurements made for beam jets in hadronic collisions as well as jets studied in neutrino scattering. The data sample is further reduced to 4371 events with the two-jet selections, S< or =0.25 and A< or =0.1. The single-particle distributions in the longitudinal and transverse directions are given. For low values of the momentum fraction (z = 2p/W), the invariant distribution shows a maximum at zapprox.0.06, consistent with a QCD expectation. The data at high Feynman x (x/sub F/) show distribution consistent with being dominated by a (1-x/sub f/)/sup 2/ variation for themore » leading quark-meson transition. Abstract

We report measurements of the lifetimes of the D/sup 0/, D/sup +/, and D/sub s//sup +/ (F/sup +/) mesons produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV. The decay vertex distributions in the processes D/sup 0/..-->..K/sup -/..pi../sup +/, D/sup +/..-->..K/sup -/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup +/, and D/sub s//sup +/..-->..phi..pi../sup +/ were made using a vertex chamber installed in the High Resolution Spectrometer at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The measured lifetimes are tau/sub D//sub =/ = (4.4 +- 1.0 +- 0.6) x 10/sup -13/ s, tau/sub D//sub =/ = (9.2/sub -1.3//sup +1.7/ +- 1.6) x 10/sup -13/ s, and tau/sub D//sub >//sub s//sup =/ = (3.1/sub -2.0//sup +2.4/ +- 0.5) x 10/sup -13/ s. In addition the lifetime of the B/sup 0/ meson is determined assuming that only the B/sup 0/ and not the B/sup -/ decays to a D/sup *//sup +/ meson. The B/sup 0/ is not directly observed. The lifetime tau/sub B//sub =/ is estimated indirectly to be (8.2/sub -3.7//sup +5.7/ +- 2.7) x 10/sup -13/ s.

Abstract

A search was made with the High Resolution Spectrometer at PEP for events with an isolated pair of charged tracks e/sup + -/X/sup - +/ where X is a muon or meson. Such pairs are a possible signature for the decay of massive neutrinos. Only one event was found, for a integrated luminosity of 300 pb/sup -1/, satisfying certain selection criteria and with a mass m/sub ex/ > 1.8 GeV. This result places strong constraints on the existence of new neutrinos with masses from 1.8 to 6.7 GeV and with mixing parameters to the known neutrinos in the range 10/sup -6/ < absolute value of U/sup 2/ < 1. 12 refs., 6 figs.

Abstract

In this paper we present results on hadronic production in antineutrino-proton interactions. The data sample, which consists of 2033 charged-current events with antineutrino energy above 5 GeV, comes from exposures of the 15-foot hydrogen bubble chamber to the Fermilab broad-band antineutrino beam. The results are discussed in terms of both their exclusive-channel components and the deep-inelastic part of the data, for which the total hadronic mass W and the lepton four-momentum transfer Q2 are large. The current-quark fragmentation shows properties in good agreement with the simple quark-parton model. In particular, the data show no evidence for scaling violations or breakdown of the factorization hypothesis when the selections appropriate to obtaining the current-quark fragments are used. The jetlike features of the events and the energy and charge correlations in the quark fragmentation region are in reasonable agreement with the standard jet model of Field and Feynman. However, these features and the transverse-momentum properties of the current-quark fragments also follow phase-space predictions. The characteristics of the spectator-diquark (target fragmentation) system are presented. These features are compared to those of the current-quark system and to some predictions of quark-fusion models for proton fragmentation.

Abstract

We present the results of a study of the inclusive reaction nu-barp ..--> mu../sup +/X/sup 0/ for antineutrino energies from 5 to 150 GeV. The data were obtained by exposing the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory hydrogen-filled 15-foot bubble chamber to a wide-band antineutrino beam. This is the first high-energy antineutrino experiment in which a pure proton target was used. The experimental problems of selecting the required sample of charged-current antineutrino-induced events are discussed in detail. A Monte Carlo simulation of the experiment is used to provide correction factors to the measured distributions. A measurement of the x dependence of the inelasticity (y) distributions gives the proton structure functions F/sup nu-barp//sub 3/(x) and xF/sub 3//sup v/p(x)up to an overall normalization constant. When expressed in terms of the quark-parton model, the quark distributions u(x) and d-bar(x)+s-bar(x) are determined. The results for u(x) are found to be in excellent agreement with models based on fits to electron and muon scattering data. Using these results to fix the u(x) normalization, an absolute measurement is made of x(d-bar(x)+s-bar(x)), the antiquark momentum distribution.

Abstract

This paper reports cross-section measurements for the /rho//sup 0/ and /ital K//sup */(890) vector mesons produced in /ital e//sup +/e/sup /minus// annihilation at /radical//ital s/ =29 GeV. The data, which were taken with the High Resolution Spectrometer operating at the SLAC colliding-beam facility PEP,correspond to an integrated luminosity of 291 pb/sup /minus/1/. The measured multiplicities for fractional momentum /ital x//gt/0.05 are /ital N//sub /rho//sup 0//=0.79/plus minus/0.04 and /ital N//sub /ital K//sup *0/(890)/=0.53/plus minus/0.04. The measured fragmentation functions agree well with the predictions of the Lund model and when extrapolated to threshold, the corresponding total multiplicities are /ital N//sub /rho//sup 0//=0.90/plus minus/0.05 and /ital N//sub /ital K//sup *0/(890)/=0.59/plus minus/0.05.

26. Diffractive process in six-prong proton-proton interactions at 205 GeV/c

Abstract

We have studied the 6-prong events in a 50000-picture exposure of the Fermilab 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber to a 205-GeV/c proton beam. The data consist of complete measurements of 442 events, each containing a proton track with ${P}_{\mathrm{lab}}l1.4$ GeV/c. A low-mass diffractive peak is seen in the event with 5 charged particles in the forward center-of-mass hemisphere. An analysis based on the rapidity distributions of the outgoing tracks and the missing mass gives a single diffractive cross section of 0.88\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12 mb for both hemispheres of which the final state $\mathrm{pp}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ contributes 0.18\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.07 mb. In the diffractive sample, only 0.20\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06 mb corresponds to events decaying through an intermediate state containing a ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{++}$. We measure an upper limit for the double diffraction cross section of 0.38\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12 mb.

Abstract

We present an analysis of scaling-variable distributions in deep-inelastic antineutrino-proton interactions. The data sample of 351 antineutrino-proton and 122 neutrino-proton charged-current events was obtained from exposures of the 15-foot hydrogen bubble chamber to the wide-band antineutrino beam at Fermilab. The methods used to select the muon track and estimate the beam energy for each event are discussed in detail. We observe no energy dependence in the shape of the antineutrino Y distribution; for a mean nu-bar energy of 31 GeV, we measure the shape parameter B = 0.76 +- 0.11. The distributions in the scaling variables X, V, and W are in reasonable agreement with the predictions of the quark-parton model. In addition, we measure the ratio R/sub p/ = sigma (nu-bar + p ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/ + ...)/ sigma (..nu.. + p ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/ + ...) = 0.79 +- 0.14, consistent with the value expected for this model.

Abstract

This paper presents the charged-particle multiplicity distributions for e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV measured in the High Resolution Spectrometer. The data, which correspond to an integrated luminosity of 185 pb/sup -1/, were obtained at the SLAC e/sup +/e/sup -/ storage ring PEP. The techniques used to correct the observed prong numbers are discussed. The multiplicity distribution of the charged particles has a mean value = 12.87 +- 0.03 +- 0.30, a dispersion D/sub 2/ = 3.67 +- 0.02 +- 0.18, and an f/sub 2/ moment of 0.60 +- 0.02 +- 0.18. Results are also presented for a two-jet sample selected with low sphericity and aplanarity. The charged-particle distributions are almost Poissonian and narrower than have been reported by other e/sup +/e/sup -/ experiments in this energy range. The mean multiplicity increases with the event sphericity, and for the sample of threefold-symmetric three-jet events, a value of = 16.3 +- 0.3 +- 0.7 is found. No correlation is observed between the multiplicities in the two hemispheres when the events are divided into two jets by a plane perpendicular to the thrust axis. This result is in contrast with the situation in soft hadronic collisions, where a strongmore » forward-backward correlation is measured. For the single jets, a mean multiplicity of 6.43 +- 0.02 +- 0.15 and a dispersion value of D/sub 2/ = 2.55 +- 0.02 +- 0.13 are found. These values give further support to the idea of independent jet fragmentation. The multiplicity distributions are well fit by the negative-binomial distribution.« less

This paper gives the results of a study of single-pion production by the weak charged current utilizing the wide-band muon-type-neutrino beam at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. The data were obtained from hydrogen and deuterium fillings of the 12-foot bubble chamber. The methods of event selection and separation from background are given as are the details of the corrections and systematic effects in the data sample. The energy-dependent cross sections and differential distributions are presented for the three single-pion production reactions ..nu..p..--> mu../sup -/p..pi../sup +/, ..nu..n..--> mu../sup -/p..pi../sup 0/, and ..nu..n..--> mu../sup -/n..pi../sup +/. An isospin decomposition shows that the ratio of I = 1/2 to I = 3/2 amplitudes is 0.68 +- 0.04 with a relative phase of (90.7 +- 4.6)/sup 0/ for M(N..pi..) mu../sup -/p..pi../sup +/, the characteristic mass of the nucleon axial-vector elastic form factor is measured to be 0.98/sup +0.06//sub -0.03/ GeV when analyzed within the context of the Adler model. The data are also compared to other parametrizations of the nucleon axial-vector form factor.

Abstract

The Fermilab wide-band antineutrino beam incident on the hydrogen-filled 15-foot bubble chamber was used to study nu-barp neutral-current interactions. The u = x(1-y) distribution is presented for both the neutral- and the charged-current data sample. Fitting the neutral-current u distribution to the prediction of a simple quark-parton model measures the Weinberg angle. By using recent measurements of the neutral-to-charged-current cross-section ratio for ..nu..p interactions (R/sub p/), we find the corresponding ratio for nu-barp interactions (R-bar/sub p/) to be 0.36 +- 0.06.

We have studied the semi-inclusive reactions anti ..nu..p ..-->.. ..mu../sup +/V/sup 0/X and ..nu..p ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/V/sup 0/X, and measured the fractional rate for producing one or more neutral strange particles in these reactions to be 0.16 +- 0.03 and 0.15 +- 0.04, respectively. We have observed K/sup -/(892) and ..sigma../sup -/(1385) production in anti ..nu..p scattering at a few percent of the inclusive rate. No evidence for D/sup 0/ production was seen in the K/sub s//sup 0/..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ final state. The distributions in the standard deep-inelastic kinematic variables are presented for events with strange particles and compared to those for the other charged current data. The fragmentation properties of events containing a K/sub s//sup 0/ are in agreement with results from electroproduction experiments, and we have measured ..integral../sub 0/ /sub 3//sup 1/ /sup 0/ 1/N/sub T/ dn/dz dz/sub dz//sup dN/ dz = 0.029 +- 0.005, which is smaller than the prediction of the Field and Feynman fragmentation model.

Abstract

This paper reports a determination of the axial-vector form factor of the nucleon using the momentum-transfer distribution for 1737 events of the type ..nu../sub ..mu../d..--> mu../sup -/pp/sub s/. The events were obtained form a 2.4 x 10/sup 6/-frame exposure of the Argonne 12-foot bubble chamber to a neutrino beam at the Argonne Zero Gradient Synchrotron. After fitting and applying selection criteria, the background was estimated to be at the 2% level. The axial-vector mass in the dipole parametrization was measured to be M/sub A/ = 1.00 +- 0.05 GeV/c/sup 2/, in good agreement both with earlier measurements from this experiment and with other recent results. A test of the conserved-vector-current hypothesis, made by simultaneously fitting M/sub A/ and M/sub V/ using dipole form factors, gave M/sub A/ = 0.80 +- 0.10 GeV/c/sup 2/ and M/sub V/ = 0.96 +- 0.04 GeV/c/sup 2/.

We have measured the processe/sup +/e/sup -/..--> mu../sup +/..mu../sup -/ at ..sqrt..s = 29 GeV using the High Resolution Spectrometer at SLAC PEP. The forward-backward charge asymmetry is A/sub mumu/ = -(4.9 +- 1.5 +- 0.5)% based on 5057 events. Abstract

The properties of the final-state hadronic system in antineutrino-proton charged-current interactions are presented. The events were observed in Fermilab 15-foot hydrogen bubble chamber. The average energy of the events is - 30 GeV, but there are some interactions beyond 100 GeV. The mean multiplicity of the charged hadrons varies as = (0.06 +- 0.60) + (1.22 +- 0.03)lnW/sup 2/ for hadronic masses W in the range 1.0 < W/sup 2/ < 50 GeV/sup 2/. By contrast, the multiplicity depends only weakly on the four-momentum transfer between the leptons. The mean pion multiplicities for events with three or more charged tracks are found to be = 1.64 +- 0.04, = 1.16 +- 0.13, for ..pi../sup -/ and ..pi../sup 0/ production, respectively. By comparing the number of positive tracks with ..pi../sup -/ data from neutrino production, we deduce a mean proton multiplicity of 0.53 +- 0.15. The single-particle distributions in both longitudinal and transverse momentum are found to be similar to those for nondiffractive production in hadronic collisions. The fragmentation properties of the final-state d quarks are compared to the expectations of the quark-parton model. The fraction of observed neutral-strange-particle production for events with three or more charged tracks is 0.08 +-more » 0.015 and is consistent with coming completely from associated production.« less

Abstract

We present our final results on double-pion production by muon-type neutrinos observed in a 2.4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{6}$ (365 000) picture exposure of the Argonne 12-foot deuterium- (hydrogen-) filled bubble chamber. The reactions $\ensuremath{\nu}d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}p{p}_{s}$, $\ensuremath{\nu}d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}p{n}_{s}$, and $\ensuremath{\nu}d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}n{n}_{s}$ are studied. The data, which shows strong $\ensuremath{\Delta}(1236)$ production, has nucleon-$\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\pi}$ mass distribution peaked at low masses in all three reactions. The excitation functions for the three reactions exhibit a rapid rise over the energy range from threshold up to about 3 GeV, but thereafter the energy dependence appears less pronounced. The threshold behavior of the cross sections for these reactions is analyzed in the context of a model developed by Adjei, Dicus, and Teplitz. Data from the constrained reaction, $\ensuremath{\nu}d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}p{p}_{s}$, satisfy the Adler conserved-vector-current test.

Abstract

Using the Fermilab 15-foot hydrogen bubble chamber exposed to a broad-band $\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}$ and $\ensuremath{\nu}$ beam, we have studied the neutral-to-charged-current cross-section ratio $R$ for interactions on protons. The ratio ${R}^{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}p}$ is found assuming various forms of the neutral-current couplings. The data are consistent with the predictions of the Weinberg-Salam model and, assuming this model, we obtain ${R}^{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}p}=0.42\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13$.

Abstract

We present the multiplicity distributions of the hadrons produced in antineutrino-proton interactions. The data sample, which consists of 2025 charged-current events with antineutrino energy greater than 5 GeV, comes from exposures of the 15-foot hydrogen bubble chamber to the broad-band antineutrino beam at Fermilab. The distributions in hadronic mass W has an average value of 3.7 GeV but extends up to 10 GeV. The mean multiplicity of charge hadrons depends on the hadronic mass W and varies as = (-0.44 +- 0.13) + (1.48 +- 0.06)lnW/sup 2/ for W/sup 2/>4 GeV/sup 2/. The mean multiplicities for events with three or more charged tracks averaged over the total data sample are = 1.68 +- 0.03 and = 1.11 +- 0.07 for ..pi../sup -/ and ..pi../sup 0/ production, respectively. The mean ..pi../sup 0/ multiplicity is found to increase slowly with n/sub -/. The integrated correlation coefficient f/sup - -//sub 2/ and the dispersion D/sup -/ are given as a function of n/sub -/. When compared to the distributions characteristic of other leptonic and hadronic reactions, we find a similarity between the nu-bar data and results from hadronic reactions that have no diffractive component. Multiplicity data for the heavier particles K/sup 0/, rho/supmore » 0/, and ..lambda.. are also summarized. The pion multiplicities in the current fragmentation region exceed those for the target fragmentation at all W values. They also satisfy the isospin relation 2 = + required for the fragmentation of an I = 1/2 quark when a W>4 GeV selection is imposed.« less

We present new results on ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}n$ at 5.5 GeV/c. We fit all the available $\frac{d\ensuremath{\sigma}}{\mathrm{dt}}$ and decay density-matrix elements for the ${K}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{*0}N$ charge-exchange reactions. The difference between the ${K}^{+}$ and ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ reactions is explained successfully in terms of interference between a $\ensuremath{\rho}$ Regge pole and strong absorptive corrections to the $\ensuremath{\pi}$ Regge pole. This difference is related by vector dominance (VDM) to the ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ photoproduction cross sections and polarized-photon asymmetry data. The VDM predictions are only qualitatively successful.

Abstract

The results presented in this paper are obtained from an analysis of bubble-chamber pictures of ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}d$ interactions at an incident ${K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ momentum of 5.5 GeV/c. Generally, the quasitwo-body final states are produced peripherally, with a small backward peak occurring in some of the final states. The final states ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\omega}$, ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\rho}}^{0}$, and ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\varphi}$ appear to be produced primarily by vector-meson exchange. In the final state $\ensuremath{\Lambda}(1520){\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ the decay distributions of the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}(1520)$ hyperon are found to be consistent with a vector-exchagne production process with $M2$ coupling at the nucleon vertex. The predictions of the independent-quark model and of other symmetry schemes, namely that the forward cross sections for ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\rho}}^{0}$, ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\omega}$, ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\varphi}$ production be in the ratios 1: 1: 2, are not inconsistent with our experimental values.

Abstract

During the initial data run with the High Resolution Spectrometer (HRS) at SLAC PEP, an integrated luminosity of 19.6 p${\mathrm{b}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV was accumulated. The data on Bhabha scattering and muon pair production are compared with the predictions of QED and the standard model of electroweak interactions. The measured forward-backward charge asymmetry in the angular distribution of muon pairs is -8.4%\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4.3%. A comparison between the data and theoretical predictions places limits on alternative descriptions of leptons and their interactions. The existence of heavy electronlike or photonlike objects that alter the structure of the QED vertices or modify the propagator are studied in terms of the QED cutoff parameters. The Bhabha-scattering results give a lower limit on a massive photon and upper limits on the effective size of the electron of ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{+}g121$ GeV and ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\ensuremath{-}}g118$ GeV at the 95% confidence level. Muon pair production yields ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{+}g172$ GeV and ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\ensuremath{-}}g172$ GeV. If electrons have substructure, the magnitude and character of the couplings of the leptonic constituents affects the Bhabha-scattering angular distributions to such an extent that limits on the order of a TeV can be extracted on the effective interaction length of the components. For models in which the constituents interact with vector couplings of strength $\frac{{g}^{2}}{4\ensuremath{\pi}}\ensuremath{\sim}1$, the energy scale ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\mathrm{VV}}$ for the contact interaction is measured to be greater than 1419.0 GeV at the 95% confidence level. We set limits on the production of supersymmetric scalar electrons through $s$-channel single-photon annihilation and $t$-channel inelastic scattering. Using events with two noncollinear electrons and no other charged or observed neutral particles in the final state, we see one event which is consistent with a simple supersymmetric model but which is also consistent with QED. This allows us to exclude the scalar electron to 95% confidence level in the mass range 1.8 to 14.2 GeV/${\mathit{c}}^{2}$.
