Abstract

Measurements are presented of the properties of high transverse momentum jets, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s=7TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35pb -1 and were collected with the ATLAS detector in 2010. Jet mass, width, eccentricity, planar flow and angularity are measured for jets reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with distance parameters R=0.6 and 1.0, with transverse momentum pT>300GeV and pseudorapidity |η|

Abstract

Distributions sensitive to the underlying event are studied in events containing one or more charged-particle jets produced in pp collisions at √s=7TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These measurements reflect 800μb-1 of data taken during 2010. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with radius parameter R varying between 0.2 and 1.0. Distributions of the charged-particle multiplicity, the scalar sum of the transverse momentum of charged particles, and the average charged-particle pT are measured as functions of pTjet in regions transverse to and opposite the leading jet for 4GeV

Abstract

Inclusive jet and dijet cross sections have been measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The cross sections were measured using jets clustered with the anti-kt algorithm with parameters R=0.4 and R=0.6. These measurements are based on the 2010 data sample, consisting of a total integrated luminosity of 37pb-1. Inclusive jet double-differential cross sections are presented as a function of jet transverse momentum, in bins of jet rapidity. Dijet double-differential cross sections are studied as a function of the dijet invariant mass, in bins of half the rapidity separation of the two leading jets. The measurements are performed in the jet rapidity range |y|

Abstract

We report a study of final states containing a W boson and hadronic jets, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector at the CERN LHC and comprise the full 2010 data sample of 36pb-1. Cross sections are determined using both the electron and muon decay modes of the W boson and are presented as a function of inclusive jet multiplicity, Njet, for up to five jets. At each multiplicity, cross sections are presented as a function of jet transverse momentum, the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of the charged lepton, missing transverse momentum, and all jets, the invariant mass spectra of jets, and the rapidity distributions of various combinations of leptons and final-state jets.

Abstract

The production cross sections of the inclusive Drell-Yan processes W ±→ν and Z/γ∗→(=e, μ) are measured in proton-proton collisions at √s=7TeV with the ATLAS detector. The cross sections are reported integrated over a fiducial kinematic range, extrapolated to the full range, and also evaluated differentially as a function of the W decay lepton pseudorapidity and the Z boson rapidity, respectively. Based on an integrated luminosity of about 35pb-1 collected in 2010, the precision of these measurements reaches a few percent. The integrated and the differential W± and Z/γ∗ cross sections in the e and μ channels are combined, and compared with perturbative QCD calculations, based on a number of different parton distribution sets available at next-to-next-to-leading order.

Abstract

Results are presented on the production of jets of particles in association with a Z/γ* boson, in proton-proton collisions at √s=7TeV with the ATLAS detector. The analysis includes the full 2010 data set, collected with a low rate of multiple proton-proton collisions in the accelerator, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36pb-1. Inclusive jet cross sections in Z/γ* events, with Z/γ* decaying into electron or muon pairs, are measured for jets with transverse momentum pT>30GeV and jet rapidity |y|

Abstract

This paper describes a measurement of the W boson transverse momentum distribution using ATLAS pp collision data from the 2010 run of the LHC at √s=7TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 31pb -1. Events form both W→eν and W→μν are used, and the transverse momentum of the W candidates is measured through the energy deposition in the calorimeter from the recoil of the W. The resulting distributions are unfolded to obtain the normalized differential cross sections as a function of the W boson transverse momentum. We present results for pTW

Abstract

We present an update of a search for supersymmetry in final states containing jets, missing transverse momentum, and one isolated electron or muon, using 1.04fb -1 of proton-proton collision data at √s=7TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in the first half of 2011. The analysis is carried out in four distinct signal regions with either three or four jets and variations on the (missing) transverse momentum cuts, resulting in optimized limits for various supersymmetry models. No excess above the standard model background expectation is observed. Limits are set on the visible cross section of new physics within the kinematic requirements of the search. The results are interpreted as limits on the parameters of the minimal supergravity framework, limits on cross sections of simplified models with specific squark and gluino decay modes, and limits on parameters of a model with bilinear R-parity violation. © 2012 CERN.

Abstract

The ATLAS experiment has measured the production cross section of events with two isolated photons in the final state, in proton-proton collisions at √s=7TeV. The full data set acquired in 2010 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 37pb -1. The background, consisting of hadronic jets and isolated electrons, is estimated with fully data-driven techniques and subtracted. The differential cross sections, as functions of the di-photon mass (m γγ), total transverse momentum (p T,γγ), and azimuthal separation (Δφ γγ), are presented and compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD. © 2012 CERN.

Abstract

The Z→ττ cross section is measured with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in four different final states determined by the decay modes of the τ leptons: muon-hadron, electron-hadron, electron-muon, and muon-muon. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36pb-1, at a proton-proton center-of-mass energy of √s=7TeV. Cross sections are measured separately for each final state in fiducial regions of high detector acceptance, as well as in the full phase space, over the mass region 66-116 GeV. The individual cross sections are combined and the product of the total Z production cross section and Z→ττ branching fraction is measured to be 0.97±0.07(stat)±0.06(syst)±0.03(lumi)nb, in agreement with next-to-next-to-leading order calculations. © 2011 CERN.

Abstract

Jets are identified and their properties studied in center-of-mass energysqrt(s) = 7 TeV proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider usingcharged particles measured by the ATLAS inner detector. Events are selectedusing a minimum bias trigger, allowing jets at very low transverse momentum tobe observed and their characteristics in the transition to high-momentum fullyperturbative jets to be studied. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-ktalgorithm applied to charged particles with two radius parameter choices, 0.4and 0.6. An inclusive charged jet transverse momentum cross section measurementfrom 4 GeV to 100 GeV is shown for four ranges in rapidity extending to 1.9 andcorrected to charged particle-level truth jets. The transverse momenta andlongitudinal momentum fractions of charged particles within jets are measured,along with the charged particle multiplicity and the particle density as afunction of radial distance from the jet axis. Comparison of the data with thetheoretical models implemented in existing tunings of Monte Carlo eventgenerators indicates reasonable overall agreement between data and Monte Carlo.These comparisons are sensitive to Monte Carlo parton showering, hadronization,and soft physics models.

Abstract

A search for contact interactions has been performed using dimuon events recorded with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at √s=7TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 42pb-1. No significant deviation from the standard model is observed in the dimuon mass spectrum, allowing the following 95% C.L. limits to be set on the energy scale of contact interactions: Λ>4.9TeV (4.5 TeV) for constructive (destructive) interference in the left-left isoscalar compositeness model. These limits are the most stringent to date for μμqq contact interactions. 2011 American Physical Society.

Abstract

This paper describes searches for the pair production of first or second generation scalar leptoquarks using 35pb-1 of proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at √s=7TeV. Leptoquarks are searched in events with two oppositely-charged muons or electrons and at least two jets, and in events with one muon or electron, missing transverse momentum and at least two jets. After event selection, the observed yields are consistent with the predicted backgrounds. Leptoquark production is excluded at the 95 CL for masses MLQ

Abstract

Measurements of charged particle distributions, sensitive to the underlying event, have been performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are based on data collected using a minimum-bias trigger to select proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 900 GeV and 7 TeV. The "underlying event" is defined as those aspects of a hadronic interaction attributed not to the hard scattering process, but rather to the accompanying interactions of the rest of the proton. Three regions are defined in azimuthal angle with respect to the highest transverse momentum charged particle in the event, such that the region transverse to the dominant momentum-flow is most sensitive to the underlying event. In each of these regions, distributions of the charged particle multiplicity, transverse momentum density, and average pT are measured. The data show generally higher underlying event activity than that predicted by Monte Carlo models tuned to pre-LHC data. © 2011 American Physical Society.
