We study the role of record statistics of damage avalanches in predicting the fracture of a heterogeneous material under tensile loading. The material is modeled using a two-dimensional random spring network where disorder is introduced through randomness in the breakage threshold strains of the springs. It is shown that the waiting strain interval between successive records of avalanches has a maximum for moderate disorder, thus showing an acceleration in occurrence of records when approaching final fracture. Such a signature is absent for low disorder when the fracture is nucleation-dominated, as well as for high disorder when the fracture is percolation type. We examine the correlation between the record with the maximum waiting strain interval and the crossover record at which the avalanche statistics change from off-critical to critical. Compared to the avalanche exponent crossover based prediction for failure, we show that the record statistics have the advantage of both being real-time as well as being a precursor significantly prior to final fracture. We also find that in the avalanche-dominated regime, the failure strain is at best weakly correlated with the strain at the maximum waiting strain interval. A stronger correlation is observed between the index of the largest record and the index of the record at the maximum waiting strain interval.

We report an experimental and theoretical study of the morphology of desiccation cracks formed in deposits of hematite ellipsoids dried in an externally applied alternating current (ac) electric field. A series of transitions in the crack morphology is observed by modulating the frequency and the strength of the applied field. We also found a clear transition in the morphology of cracks as a function of the aspect ratio of the ellipsoid. We show that these transitions in the crack morphology can be explained by a linear stability analysis of the equation describing the effective dynamics of an ellipsoid placed in an externally applied ac electric field.

The hysteretic behavior exhibited by collagen fibrils, when subjected to cyclic loading, is known to result in both dissipation as well as accumulation of residual strain. On subsequent relaxation, partial recovery has also been reported. Cross-links have been considered to play a key role in overall mechanical properties. Here, we modify an existing coarse-grained molecular dynamics model for collagen fibril with initially cross-linked collagen molecules, which is known to reproduce the response to uniaxial strain, by incorporating reformation of cross-links to allow for possible recovery of the fibril. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we show that our model successfully replicates the key features observed in experimental data, including the movement of hysteresis loops, the time evolution of residual strains and energy dissipation, as well as the recovery observed during relaxation. We also show that the characteristic cycle number, describing the approach toward steady state, has a value similar to that in experiments. We also emphasize the vital role of the degree of cross-linking on the key features of the macroscopic response to cyclic loading.

We consider a dimer lattice of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) type, where alternating linear couplings have a controllably small difference and the cubic nonlinearity (β-FPUT) is the same for all interaction pairs. We use a weakly nonlinear formal reduction within the lattice band gap to obtain a continuum, nonlinear Dirac-type system. We derive the Dirac soliton profiles and the model's conservation laws analytically. We then examine the cases of the semi-infinite and the finite domains and illustrate how the soliton solutions of the bulk problem can be glued to the boundaries for different types of boundary conditions. We thus explain the existence of various kinds of nonlinear edge states in the system, of which only one leads to the standard topological edge states observed in the linear limit. We finally examine the stability of bulk and edge states and verify them through direct numerical simulations, in which we observe a solitonlike wave setting into motion due to the instability.
