Abstract

We discuss the general method for obtaining full positivity bounds on multifield effective field theories (EFTs). While the leading order forward positivity bounds are commonly derived from the elastic scattering of two (superposed) external states, we show that, for a generic EFT containing three or more low-energy modes, this approach only gives incomplete bounds. We then identify the allowed parameter space as the dual to a spectrahedron, constructed from crossing symmetries of the amplitude, and show that finding the optimal bounds for a given number of modes is equivalent to a geometric problem: finding the extremal rays of a spectrahedron. We show how this is done analytically for simple cases and numerically formulated as semidefinite programming (SDP) problems for more complicated cases. We demonstrate this approach with a number of well-motivated examples in particle physics and cosmology, including EFTs of scalars, vectors, fermions, and gravitons. In all these cases, we find that the SDP approach leads to results that either improve the previous ones or are completely new. We also find that the SDP approach is numerically much more efficient.

Abstract

The cross section for the process e(+)e(-)-> pi(+) pi(-) J/psi is measured precisely at center-of-mass energies from 3.77 to 4.60 GeV using 9 fb(-1) of data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Two resonant structures are observed in a fit to the cross section. The first resonance has a mass of (222.0 +/- 3.1 +/- 1.4) MeV/ c(2) and a width of (44.1 +/- 4.3 +/- 2.0)MeV, while the second one has a mass of (4320.0 +/- 10.4 +/- 7.0)MeV/c(2) and a width of (101.4(- 19.7)(+25.3) +/- 10.2) MeV, where the first errors are statistical and second ones are systematic. The first resonance agrees with the Y(4260) resonance reported by previous experiments. The precision of its resonant parameters is improved significantly. The second resonance is observed in e(+)e(-)-> pi(+) pi(-) J/psi for the first time. The statistical significance of this resonance is estimated to be larger than 7.6 sigma. The mass and width of the second resonance agree with the Y(4360) resonance reported by the BABAR and Belle experiments within errors. Finally, the Y(4008) resonance previously observed by the Belle experiment is not confirmed in the description of the BESIII data.

Abstract

Based on a sample of 1.31 x 10(9) J/Psi events collected with the BESIII detector, an amplitude analysis of the isospin-violating decays eta' -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and eta' -> pi(0)pi(0)pi(0) is performed. A significant P-wave contribution from eta' -> rho(+/-)eta(-/+) is observed for the first time in eta' -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0). The branching fraction is determined to be B(eta' -> rho(+/-)pi(-/+)) = (7.44 +/- 0.60 +/- 1.26 +/- 1.84) x 10(-4), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third model dependent. In addition to the nonresonant S-wave component, there is a significant sigma meson component. The branching fractions of the combined S-wave components are determined to be B(eta' -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0))(S) = (37.63 +/- 0.77 +/- 2.22 +/- 4.48) x 10(-4) and B(eta' -> pi(0)pi(0)pi(0)) = (35.22 +/- 0.82 +/- 2.54) x 10(-4), respectively. The latter one is consistent with previous BESIII measurements.

4. Convex Geometry Perspective on the (Standard Model) Effective Field Theory Space.

Abstract

We present a convex geometry perspective to the effective field theory (EFT) parameter space. We show that the second s derivatives of the forward EFT amplitudes form a convex cone, whose extremal rays are closely connected with states in the UV theory. For tree-level UV completions, these rays are simply theories with all UV particles living in at most one irreducible representation of the symmetries of the theory. In addition, all the extremal rays are determined by the symmetries and can be systematically identified via group theoretical considerations. The implications are twofold. First, geometric information encoded in the EFT space can help reconstruct the UV completion. In particular, we will show that the dim-8 operators are important in reverse engineering the UV physics from the standard model EFT and, thus, deserve more theoretical and experimental investigations. Second, theoretical bounds on the Wilson coefficients can be obtained by identifying the boundaries of the cone and are, in general, stronger than the current positivity bounds. We show explicit examples of these new bounds and demonstrate that they originate from the scattering amplitudes corresponding to entangled states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

5. Single Top Production at Next-to-Leading Order in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory.

Abstract

Single top production processes at hadron colliders provide information on the relation between the top quark and the electroweak sector of the standard model. We compute the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the three main production channels: t-channel, s-channel, and tW associated production, in the standard model including operators up to dimension six. The calculation can be matched to parton shower programs and can therefore be directly used in experimental analyses. The QCD corrections are found to significantly impact the extraction of the current limits on the operators, because both of an improved accuracy and a better precision of the theoretical predictions. In addition, the distributions of some of the key discriminating observables are modified in a nontrivial way, which could change the interpretation of measurements in terms of UV complete models.
