An excitation function of one- and two-neutron transfer channels for the 60Ni+116Sn system has been measured with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA in a wide energy range, from the Coulomb barrier to far below it. The experimental transfer probabilities are well reproduced, for the first time with heavy ions, in absolute values and in slope by microscopic calculations which incorporate nucleon-nucleon pairing correlations. Measurements of the excitation function for the fusion of 24Mg + 30Si (Q = 17.89 MeV)have been extended toward lower energies with respect to previous experimental data. The 5-factor maximum observed in this large, positive-Q-value system is the most pronounced among such systems studied thus far. The significance and the systematics of an S-factor maximum in systems with positive fusion Q values are discussed. This result would strongly impact the extrapolated cross sections and reaction rates in the carbon and oxygen burnings and, thus, the study of the history of stellar evolution. Carbon burning is a key step in the evolution of massive stars, Type 1a supernovae and superbursts in x-ray binary systems. Determining the ^{12}C+^{12}C fusion cross section at relevant energies by extrapolation of direct measurements is challenging due to resonances at and below the Coulomb barrier. A study of the ^{24}Mg(α,α^{'})^{24}Mg reaction has identified several 0^{+} states in ^{24}Mg, close to the ^{12}C+^{12}C threshold, which predominantly decay to ^{20}Ne(ground state)+α. These states were not observed in ^{20}Ne(α,α_{0})^{20}Ne resonance scattering suggesting that they may have a dominant ^{12}C+^{12}C cluster structure. Given the very low angular momentum associated with sub-barrier fusion, these states may play a decisive role in ^{12}C+^{12}C fusion in analogy to the Hoyle state in helium burning. We present estimates of updated ^{12}C+^{12}C fusion reaction rates.

A novel method of deducing the deformation of the N=Z nucleus 76Sr is presented. It is based on the comparison of the experimental Gamow-Teller strength distribution B(GT) from its beta decay with the results of quasi-random-phase approximation calculations. This method confirms previous indications of the strong prolate deformation of this nucleus in a totally independent way. The measurement has been carried out with a large total absorption gamma spectrometer, "Lucrecia," newly installed at CERN-ISOLDE.
