A chemically stable bilayers of SiO_{2} (2D silica) is a new, wide band gap 2D material. Up till now graphene has been the only 2D material where the bending rigidity has been measured. Here we present inelastic helium atom scattering data from 2D silica on Ru(0001) and extract the first bending rigidity, κ, measurements for a nonmonoatomic 2D material of definable thickness. We find a value of κ=8.8  eV±0.5  eV which is of the same order of magnitude as theoretical values in the literature for freestanding crystalline 2D silica.

Scanning tunneling microscopy has developed into a powerful tool for the characterization of conductive surfaces, for which the overlap of tip and sample wave functions determines the image contrast. On insulating layers, as the CaO thin film grown on Mo(001) investigated here, direct overlap between initial and final states is not enabled anymore and electrons are transported via hopping through the conduction-band states of the oxide. Carrier transport is accompanied by strong phonon excitations in this case, imprinting an oscillatory signature on the differential conductance spectra of the system. The phonons show a characteristic spatial dependence and become softer around lattice irregularities in the oxide film, such as dislocation lines.

Single magnetic Co atoms are deposited on atomically thin NaCl films on Au(111). Two different adsorption sites are revealed by high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), i.e., at Na and at Cl locations. Using density functional based simulations of the STM images, we show that the Co atoms substitute with either a Na or Cl atom of the NaCl surface, resulting in cationic and anionic Co dopants with a high thermal stability. The dependence of the magnetic coupling between neighboring Co atoms on their separation is investigated via spatially resolved measurement of the local density of states.

The possibility to modify the adsorption properties of a porous silica/Mo(112) film by controlling its work function has been studied by a combined STM and density-functional theory approach. While the original film is inert towards metal adsorption, Au atoms and clusters can be stabilized on the surface after Li doping. The Li atoms penetrate the topmost silica layer and bind as Li+ cations at the metal-oxide interface, thereby reducing the oxide work function. This induces a charge transfer into Au adatoms, which in turn enables strong Au-silica interaction mediated by a polaronic distortion of the oxide lattice.

The adsorption properties of thin silica films on Mo(112) have been tailored by embedding single Pd atoms into the nanopores of the oxide material. The embedded Pd is able to anchor metal adatoms that would not bind to the inert silica surface otherwise. Several adsorption structures, e.g., Pd-Pd, Ag-Pd, and Au-Pd complexes, have been prepared in this way and analyzed with the STM and density functional theory. The binding strength of the different adatoms to the surface is determined by the number of electrons in their frontier orbitals, which introduce a repulsive interaction with the oxide electronic states and weaken the covalent bond to the Pd anchor.

We present a combined experimental (STM/scanning tunneling spectroscopy) and theoretical (density functional theory) study on the deposition of Au and Pd metal atoms on FeO/Pt(111) ultrathin films. We show that while the Pd atoms are only slightly oxidized, the Au atoms form positive ions upon deposition, at variance to a charge transfer into the Au atoms as observed for MgO/Ag(100). The modulation of the adsorption properties within the surface Moiré cell and the charging induce the formation a self-assembled array of gold adatoms on FeO/Pt(111), whereas Pd atoms are randomly distributed.

The origin of electron trapping and negative charging of hydroxylated silica surfaces is predicted based on accurate quantum-mechanical calculations. The calculated electron affinities of the two dominant neutral paramagnetic defects, the nonbridging oxygen center, identical with Si-O*, and the silicon dangling bond, identical with Si*, demonstrate that both defects are deep electron traps and can form the corresponding negatively charged defects. We predict the structure and optical absorption energies of these diamagnetic defects.

The arrangement of single gold and palladium atoms deposited on the surface of a 3 monolayer thin film of MgO was investigated using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. While Pd atoms are arranged in a random fashion, Au forms an ordered array on the surface. The long-range ordering as well as the scanning tunneling microscopy appearance of single Au atoms on a 3 monolayer thin MgO film can be explained by partial charge transfer from the substrate to Au atoms as predicted recently by density functional theory calculations [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 226104 (2005)10.1103/PhysRevLett.94.226104]. In contrast with that, Au atoms on a thick film were found to be essentially neutral.

It has been experimentally observed that a bridging oxygen vacancy on the rutile TiO2(110) surface introduces localized Ti3+ 3d1 states about 1 eV below the conduction band which are not removed upon dissociation of a water molecule and formation of a pair of hydroxyl groups. Density functional calculations based on pure exchange-correlation functionals have not been able to satisfactorily reproduce and analyze these findings. Here we show that a correct description of the localized defect states on reduced and hydroxylated TiO2(110) is achieved only if proper geometry relaxation is accounted for using hybrid exchange functionals. We confirm the electron trapping nature of Ti(OH) groups but find no evidence that these defects should also act as hole traps by formation of Ti4+(OH)* radicals.

Bonding of gold clusters, , 16, and 20, on MgO(100) and on thin MgO films supported on Mo(100) is investigated using first-principles density-functional theory. Enhanced adhesive bonding is found for clusters deposited on metal-supported MgO films of thickness up to about 1 nm, or 4 to 5 MgO layers, originating from electrostatic interaction between the underlying metal and metal-induced excess electronic charge accumulated at the cluster interface with the oxide film. The increased wetting propensity is accompanied by a dimensionality crossover from three-dimensional optimal cluster geometries on MgO(100) to energetically favored two-dimensional structures on the metal-supported films.

In the present Letter the first electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of single metal atoms on a single crystalline oxide surface are presented. For Au atoms on a MgO(001) film investigated here an analysis of the angular dependent resonance positions and the hyperfine coupling to (17)O shows that the atoms are bound on top of oxygen ions on the terrace of the film. This result is in perfect agreement with scanning tunneling microscopy measurements at 5 K presented here. The measured hyperfine matrix components allow an experimental verification of the theoretically proposed binding mechanism of Au atoms on MgO. In particular, the large reduction of the isotropic hyperfine coupling constant of supported Au as compared to free atoms is not due to a charge transfer at the interface but a hybridization of orbitals and a resulting polarization of the unpaired electron.

The chemical activity of supported metal nanoclusters is enhanced by electronic charging induced by the interaction with surface defects. We use density functional theory plane wave calculations to show that charging of metal atoms with high electron affinity like Au is possible also in the absence of defects by atom deposition on ultrathin MgO films (1 to 3 layers) grown on Mo(100). The Au 6s level falls below the Fermi level of Mo, leading to electron transfer from Mo to Au by direct tunneling through the insulating MgO film. The effect is not observed for Pd, whose 5s empty level falls just above the Fermi level of Mo, or for thicker MgO films.

The optical properties of gold atoms supported on amorphous silica (alpha-SiO2) were studied experimentally and theoretically in the visible range. Samples were prepared in situ by depositing Au atoms at low coverages (5 x 10(12) cm(-2)) in UHV, and the optical absorption spectra were recorded by cavity ringdown spectroscopy. The atomic absorption bands can be attributed to gold atoms trapped at [triple bond] Si-O(.-) and [triple bond]Si-O(-) defect sites. The absence of optical transitions typical for Au(2) shows that the atoms are efficiently anchored at these defect sites, preventing diffusion and aggregation. Furthermore, these experimental results reveal that it is now possible to study optical properties of well-defined nanostructures at surface coverages as low as 5 x 10(11) cm(-2).

Point defects on oxide surfaces are presumed to be preferential nucleation sites for supported metal clusters. Under typical growth conditions, dimers constitute the first step in island nucleation. First-principles calculations on the formation of Pd dimers on regular and defect sites of the MgO(100) surface show that nucleation occurs with large dimer binding energies at divacancies and charged oxygen vacancies (F+ centers), while it is less favorable on steps and neutral F centers. The extensive database of defect trapping/attachment properties gives a firm basis to rationalize recent atomic-force microscopy findings and provides guidelines valid, in general, for ionic substrates.
