The present paper is devoted to the theoretical and numerical analysis of the spontaneously emitted electromagnetic fluctuations characterized by quasi-parallel wave vectors relative to the ambient magnetic field. The formulation is based upon the Klimontovich plasma kinetic theory. The comparative study is carried out between the spontaneously emitted field fluctuation spectrum constructed on the basis of a single Maxellian velocity distribution function (VDF) and the spectrum that arises from multi-component electron VDFs similar to those found in the solar wind. Typical solar wind electron VDF is composed of a Gaussian core and kappa distributions of halo and super-halo components. Of these, the halo and super-halo populations represent tenuous but energetic components. It is found that the energetic electrons make important contributions to the total emission spectrum. It is also found that the halo electrons are largely responsible for the emission spectrum in the whistler frequency range, whereas the more energetic super-halo electrons emit quasi-longitudinal fluctuations in the Langmuir frequency range, thus validating the recent quasi-steady state model of the solar wind electrons put forth by the present authors [Kim et al., Astrophys. Implosions of (quasi-)spherical loads with mass redistribution and displacement modification are investigated numerically. Both methods can theoretically counterbalance the nonuniformity of magnetic pressure along the load surface and realize quasi-spherical Z-pinch implosions. Mass redistribution is feasible for spherical loads with large radius and weight, while the displacement modification is more suitable for light loads, such as those composed of wire arrays. Simulation results suggest that, for mass redistributed spherical loads, wall instabilities induced by polar mass flows will deform the imploding shell. For prolate spherical loads, in which the wall instability cannot develop, the kinetic energy distribution is disturbed at high latitude. This paper is the first approach for analyzing the influence of κ-distributed particles on the modified two-stream instability (MTSI). It is assumed that the plasma consists of a magnetized Maxwellian electron contribution and unmagnetized κ-distributed ions drifting across the electrons. Within an electrostatic approximation, the influence of the κ parameter on the maximum growth rate of the MTSI is evaluated for the special case of parallel drift velocity and wave propagation. Magnetic fields are an essential component of a plasma. In many astrophysical, solar, magnetospheric, and laboratory situations the magnetic field in the plasma can be very dynamic and form highly complex structures. One approach to unraveling these structures is to determine the magnetic skeleton of the field, a set of topological features that divide the magnetic field into topologically distinct domains. In general, the features of the magnetic skeleton are difficult to locate, in particular those given by numerical experiments. In this paper, we propose a new set of tools to find the skeleton of general magnetic fields including null points, spines, separatrix surfaces, and separators. This set of tools is found to be considerably better at finding the skeleton than the currently favored methods used in magnetohydrodynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents an approach to solving a special Fredholm-type integral equation of the first kind with a particular kernel containing a modified Bessel function for applications in plasma physics. From the physical point of view, the problem was defined by Bissell and Johnson (B&J) [Phys. Fluids 30, 779 (1987)] as a task to find the potential profile and the ion velocity distribution function in a plane-parallel discharge with a Maxwellian ion source. The B&J model is a generalization of the well-known Tonks–Langmuir (T&L) [Phys. Rev. 34, 876 (1929)] discharge model characterized by a “cold” ion source. Unlike the T&L model, which can be readily solved analytically, attempts to solve the B&J model with a “warm” ion source have been done only numerically. However, the validity of numerical solutions up to date remains constrained to a rather limited range of a crucial independent parameter of the B&J integral equation, which mathematically is the width of a Gaussian distribution and physically represents the ion temperature. It was solved only for moderately warm ion sources. This paper presents the exact numerical solution of the B&J model, which is valid without any restriction regarding the above-mentioned parameter. It is shown that the ion temperature is very different from the temperature of the ion source. The new results with high-temperature ion sources are not only of particular importance for understanding and describing the plasma-sheath boundary in fusion plasmas, but are of considerable interest for discharge problems in general. The eigenvalue of the problem, found analytically by Harrison and Thompson [Proc. Phys. The reversal mechanism of a dipole magnetic field generated by dynamo action in a rotating spherical shell is investigated by a three-dimensional nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic simulation as well as a linear stability analysis. The emphasis of the study is on understanding the relationship between dipole reversal and the symmetry properties of the dynamo solution. As a result, first, it is found that there is a threshold of the magnetic Prandtl number, below which the dipole field is never reversed, and above which the reversal occurs at irregular intervals like the paleomagnetic evolution of the geodynamo. Second, it is shown that the dynamo process responsible for the generation of a dipole field (called “a-dynamo” in this paper) consists only of the antimirror symmetric magnetic field and the mirror symmetric velocity field with respect to the equatorial plane. Third, it is found that the components of the opposite symmetry to the a-dynamo grow only during the polarity reversal events and quickly decay afterwards. This indicates that the dipole field reversal and the loss of equatorial symmetry are tightly connected. In fact, it is clearly demonstrated by numerical analyses that the a-dynamo process is linearly unstable for the perturbation of opposite symmetry when the magnetic Prandtl number exceeds the threshold for dipole reversal. Mode coupling between the longitudinal Fourier components plays a crucial role in creating the instability. Based on the above results, it is proposed that symmetry-breaking instability could be the mechanism for dipole field reversal in the geodynamo process. The trajectories of electrons and ions when a hot plasma expands under vacuum are studied in detail from a theoretical point of view and with the aid of numerical simulations. Exact analytic solutions are obtained in multi-dimensions, starting from the solution for the expansion of a quasi-neutral, Gaussian, collisionless plasma in vacuum [D. S. Dorozhkina and V. E. Semenov, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 2691 (1998)]. Focusing of laser-accelerated ions with concave targets is investigated with the hybrid particle-in-cell code Lsp. For a given laser energy and pulse duration, a larger laser focal spot is found to be beneficial to focus the ion beam to a smaller focal spot, due both to a geometric effect and to the decrease in the transverse gradient of the hot electron pressure. A reversed shear Alfvén eigenmodes (RSAEs) theory has been developed for reversed magnetic field shear plasmas when the safety factor minimum, qmin , is at or above a rational value. The modes we study are known sometimes as either the bottom of the frequency sweep or the down sweeping RSAEs. We show that, strictly speaking, the ideal MHD theory is not compatible with the eigenmode solution in the reversed shear plasma with qmin above integer values. Corrected by a special analytic finite Larmor radius (FLR) condition, MHD dispersion of these modes nevertheless can be developed. Numerically, MHD structure can serve as a good approximation for the RSAEs.The large radial scale part of the analytic RSAE solution can be obtained from ideal MHD and expressed in terms of the Legendre functions. The kinetic equation with FLR effects for the eigenmode is solved numerically and agrees with the analytic solutions. The evolution of chirp-driven electrostatic waves in unmagnetized plasmas is numerically investigated by using a one-dimensional (1D) Vlasov-poisson solver with periodic boundary conditions. The initial velocity distribution of the 1D plasma is assumed to be governed by nonextensive q distribution [C. Tsallis, J. Stat. Phys. 52, 479 (1988)]. For an infinitesimal amplitude of an external drive, we investigate the effects of chirp driven dynamics that leads to the formation of giant phase space vortices (PSV) for both Maxwellian (q=1) and non-Maxwellian (q ≠ 1) plasmas. For non-Maxwellian plasmas, the formation of giant PSV with multiple extrema and phase velocities is shown to be dependent on the strength of "q". We numerically study the effects of varying electric conductivity and magnetic permeability of the bounding wall on a kinematic dynamo in a sphere for parameters relevant to Madison plasma dynamo experiment. The dynamo is excited by a laminar, axisymmetric flow of von Kármán type. The flow is obtained as a solution to the Navier-Stokes equation for an isothermal fluid with a velocity profile specified at the sphere's boundary. The properties of the wall are taken into account as thin-wall boundary conditions imposed on the magnetic field. It is found that an increase in the permeability of the wall reduces the critical magnetic Reynolds number Rmcr. An increase in the conductivity of the wall leaves Rmcr unaffected but reduces the dynamo growth rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The implosion dynamics of wire-array Z-pinches are investigated numerically in 2D (r, θ) geometry by using a resistive MHD code. It is assumed that the wires have expanded to plasmas with diameter d0, which is used as the initial condition for the consequent implosion process. In fact, the explosion process of individual wires is not included. By changing d0, the effects of the wire expansion degree on the implosion dynamics are analyzed. When d0 is larger, the current density is more concentrated at the outer side of the wires and the fraction of current flow around the wire plasmas is nearly in proportion to d0. As a result, the ablation rate of wires is increased and the implosion phase starts earlier. This conclusion agrees with the simulation works of other authors [Chittenden et al., Phys. Plasmas 11(3), 1118 (2004)]. When the array radius and initial wire plasma diameter are fixed, the increase of wire number leads to the azimuthal merge of wires during implosion. When the wires number exceed a critical value, which is related to d0, wire plasmas can merge to a continuous shell with an azimuthal perturbation in density, which depends on the initial wires number. Conservation equations are derived for the gyrocenter toroidal momentum density and the polarization field. These equations are derived from the gyrokinetic model as it is implemented in simulation codes. In view of predicting the toroidal rotation in future fusion devices such as ITER, where external momentum input will be small, accurate simulations of momentum transport are crucial. The evolution equation for gyrocenter toroidal momentum density involves the divergence of the off-diagonal components of the Reynolds and generalized Maxwell stress, while the source term is the radial current of gyrocenters. The time evolution of the polarization field is the opposite of the gyrocenter current. Hence, an evolution equation for the total momentum density, i.e., the sum of gyrocenter and polarization field toroidal momentum density can be written. The force balance equation and the toroidal momentum conservation equations have been numerically tested with the gysela code. They are satisfied with a high level of accuracy. A weakly nonlinear analysis is carried out to investigate the properties of dust ion-acoustic shock waves in a charge varying dusty plasma with vortexlike electron distribution. We use the ionization model, hot ions with equilibrium streaming speed and a trapped electron charging current derived from the well-known orbit limited motion theory. A new modified Burger equation is derived. Besides nonlinear trapping, this equation involves two kinds of dissipation (the anomalous one inherent to nonadiabatic dust charge fluctuation and the one due to the particle loss and ionization). These two kinds of dissipation can act concurrently. The traveling wave solution has been acquired by employing the modified extended tanh-function method. The shocklike solution is numerically analyzed based on the typical numerical data from laboratory dusty plasma devices. Whitham's averaged variational principle is applied in studying dynamics of formation of autoresonant (continuously phase-locked) Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal (BGK) modes in a plasma driven by a chirped frequency ponderomotive wave. A flat-top electron velocity distribution is used as a model allowing a variational formulation within the water bag theory. The corresponding Lagrangian, averaged over the fast phase variable yields evolution equations for the slow field variables, allows uniform description of all stages of excitation of driven-chirped BGK modes, and predicts modulational stability of these nonlinear phase-space structures. An analytic expression for the stability threshold of linear tearing modes is derived. The magnetized plasma is described in terms of a standard viscoresistive magnetohydrodynamic model. The analytic derivation requires an extension of the standard layer equation that represents an approximation of the full model in the vicinity of the reconnecting layer. The conceptual development and implementation of a scalable nonlinear solver for the time-dependent three-dimensional (3D) compressible resistive magnetohydrodynamics model (MHD) is discussed. The approach is based on Jacobian-free Newton–Krylov technology, preconditioned with multigrid methods for algorithmic scalability. The key to the approach is the reformulation of the hyperbolic MHD system into a parabolic one, which is amenable to multigrid techniques. Such reformulation (parabolization) aims to render the modified system block diagonally dominant (unlike the original MHD system, which is diagonally submissive for implicit time steps Δt larger than the explicit Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy time step). The algorithm has been tested on a variety of 2D and 3D configurations which demonstrate its excellent algorithmic scalability properties. In particular, it is shown that, serially, the CPU time for a given simulation scales linearly with the number of unknowns, and that large CPU gains (∼30) are attainable with respect to an explicit approach even for moderate grids (256×256). The results of a recent numerical analysis of a diffusion experiment on the large plasma device (LAPD) [Maggs et al., Phys. Plasmas 14, 052507 (2007)] are re-examined. A simplified analytic solution of the transport equations is obtained by including previously omitted contributions to the transport. This solution strongly suggests that an accurate determination of the perpendicular diffusion coefficient would be very difficult in the specific LAPD experimental arrangement, due to near-cancellation of large terms. Thus, caution should be exercised in claiming that Bohm diffusion, or its suppression in the presence of a large applied radial voltage, has been observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Four types of magnetohydrodynamic modes determine the overall stability of centrifugally confined plasmas: flute interchanges and the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, in a low β system, and the magnetorotational instability (MRI) and the Parker instability, in a high β system. Analytic calculations and numerical simulations of velocity shear stabilization of flute interchanges are reviewed. The results showed strong evidence of stabilization. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is ideally stable if the generalized Rayleigh's inflexion criterion is satisfied. The physical mechanisms of both the MRI and the Parker instability are examined and an explanation of why the MRI mechanism is insufficient to destabilize the system while the Parker instability could occur is given. Numerical simulations of the nonlinear behavior of the Parker instability are presented. It is shown that clumping from the Parker instability could reinforce centrifugal confinement. We present a comprehensive numerical study of the dynamics of an intense laser pulse as it propagates through an underdense plasma in two and three dimensions. By varying the background plasma density and the polarization of the laser beam, significant differences are found in terms of energy transport and dissipation, in agreement with recently reported experimental results. Below the threshold for relativistic self-focusing, the plasma and laser dynamics are observed to be substantially insensitive to the initial laser polarization, since laser transport is dominated by ponderomotive effects. Above this threshold, relativistic effects become important, and laser energy is dissipated either by plasma heating (p-polarization) or by trapping of electromagnetic energy into plasma cavities (s-polarization) or by a combination of both (circular polarization). Besides the fundamental interest of this study, the results presented are relevant to applications such as plasma-based accelerators, x-ray lasers, and fast-ignition inertial confinement fusion.
