Moving electron vortices have been observed in laser interaction with non-uniform near-critical-density plasma by multi-dimensional Particle-in-Cell simulations. In two dimensional geometry, there are two vortices with opposite magnetic polarity, moving perpendicularly to the plasma density gradient direction. The field distribution and particle motion composing such a moving structure have been clearly observed in simulations, which explains the vortex motion. Two components of loop currents are formed around each electron vortex, which dominate the vortex motion. The moving velocity can be as large as a 0.2 c level, forming relativistic vortices inside the plasma. Laser plasma conditions such as intensity, polarization, density profile, and external magnetic field effects on the vortex motion and evolution are also studied. In three dimensions, the structure appears as an expanding magnetic ring with an internal magnetic field up to 1000 Tesla. Such vortex structures suggest an interesting way of energy (with more than 5% of the laser energy) transportation to ambient plasmas as far as 50 μ m away from the laser-plasma interaction region, which may have applications in laser plasma-based inertial confinement fusion and laboratory astrophysics.

The production of intense X-ray and particle sources is one of the most remarkable aspects of high energy laser interaction with a solid target. Wide application of these laser-driven secondary sources requires a high yield, which is partially limited by the amount of laser energy absorbed by the target. Here, we report on the enhancement of laser absorption and X-ray and particle flux by target surface modifications. In comparison to targets with flat front surfaces, our experiments show exceptional laser-to-target performance for our novel cone-shaped silicon microstructures. The structures are manufactured via laser-induced surface structuring. Spectral and spatial studies of reflectance and X-ray generation reveal significant increases of the silicon K α line and a boost of the overall X-ray intensity, while the amount of reflected light decreases. Also, the proton and electron yields are enhanced, but both temperatures remain comparable to those of flat foil targets. We support the experimental findings with 2D particle in cell simulations to identify the mechanisms responsible for the strong enhancement. Our results demonstrate how custom surface structures can be used to engineer high power laser-plasma sources for future applications.

We study the spontaneous emission in high-gain free-electron lasers operating in the quantum regime and its detrimental effect on coherent emission. A quantum model describing the coherent and spontaneous emission in free electron lasers has been recently proposed and investigated [G. R. M. Robb and R. Bonifacio, Phys. Plasmas 19, 073101 (2012)]. The model is based on a Wigner distribution describing the electron beam dynamics, coupled to Maxwell equations for the emitted radiation field. Here, we rephrase the model in a more rigorous way, considering a discrete Wigner distribution defined for a periodic space coordinate for which the electron momentum is discrete. From its numerical solution, we find good agreement with the approximate continuous model. In the quantum regime of the free-electron laser, we obtain a simple density matrix equation for two momentum states, where the role of the spontaneous emission has a clear interpretation in terms of coherence decay and population transfer.

A pseudospark-sourced electron beam is a promising candidate for driving a THz millimeter wave radiation source. However, the physics governing the electron beam density profile and the beam center deviation from the axis of the structure, which may be caused by the randomness in the pseudospark discharge process, remains still unclear especially for the high energy component of the pseudospark-sourced electron beam which is usually non-mono-energetic. It is essential to study the electron beam density profile and the beam center position distribution for optimizing the pseudospark discharge configuration. In this paper, images of some single-shot electron beam pulses have been captured using a 50 μm thickness stopping copper foil and a phosphor screen coated with P47 scintillator to study the electron beam density profile and the beam center position distribution of the high energy component of the electron beam. The experiments have been carried out on two pseudospark discharge configurations with two different size hollow cathode cavities. The influence of the cathode aperture of each configuration has also been studied according to the beam images. Experimental results show that the beam profile of the high energy component has a Lorentzian distribution and is much smaller than the axial aperture size with the beam centers dispersing within a certain range around the axis of the discharge structure. The pseudospark-sourced electron beam with the larger hollow cathode cavity shows smaller full width at half maximum (FWHM) radius and a more concentrated beam center distribution.

The effects of ion motion on Landau damping has been studied by the use of one-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson simulation. It is shown that the ion motion may significantly change the development of the linear Landau damping. When the ion mass is multiple of proton mass, its motion will halt the linear Landau damping at some time due to the excitation of ion acoustic waves. The latter will dominate the system evolution at the later stage and hold a considerable fraction of the total energy in the system. With very small ion mass, such as in electron-positron plasma, the ion motion can suppress the linear Landau damping very quickly. When the initial field amplitude is relatively high such as with the density perturbation amplitude δn/n0 > 0.1, the effect of ion motion on Landau damping is found to be weak or even ignorable.

This paper presents a numerical study of the linear and nonlinear evolution of the electromagnetic electron-cyclotron (EMEC) instability in a bi-Kappa distributed plasma. Distributions with high energy tails described by the Kappa power-laws are often observed in collision-less plasmas (e.g., solar wind and accelerators), where wave-particle interactions control the plasma thermodynamics and keep the particle distributions out of Maxwellian equilibrium. Under certain conditions, the anisotropic bi-Kappa distribution gives rise to plasma instabilities creating low-frequency EMEC waves in the whistler branch. The instability saturates nonlinearly by reducing the temperature anisotropy until marginal stability is reached. Numerical simulations of the Vlasov-Maxwell system of equations show excellent agreement with the growth-rate and real frequency of the unstable modes predicted by linear theory. The wave-amplitude of the EMEC waves at nonlinear saturation is consistent with magnetic trapping of the electrons.

The extreme ultraviolet (XUV) emission from dense plasmas generated with sub-10-fs laser pulses with varying peak intensities up to 3*10^16 W/cm^2 is investigated for different target materials. K shell spectra are obtained from low Z targets (carbon and boron nitride). In the spectra a series limit for the hydrogen and helium like resonance lines is observed indicating that the plasma is at high density and pressure ionization has removed the higher levels. In addition, L shell spectra from titanium targets were obtained. Basic features of the K and L shell spectra are reproduced with computer simulations. The calculations include hydrodynamic simulation of the plasma expansion and collisional radiative calculations of the XUV emission., 22 pages, 11 figures.
