Five new sacculatane diterpenoids, 17,18-epoxy-7-sacculaten-12,11-olide, 7,17-sacculatadien-11,12-olide, 11beta,12-epoxy-7,17-sacculatadien-11alpha-ol, 1beta-acetoxy-11beta,12-epoxy-7,17-sacculatadien-11alpha-ol and 1beta,15xi-diacetoxy-11,12-epoxy-8(12),9(11),17-sacculatatriene along with sacculatal and sacculatanolide have been isolated from axenic cultures of the liverwort Fossombronia wondraczekii and their structures assigned on the basis of their spectroscopical properties.

A dichloromethane and a methanol extract of the liverwort Bazzania trilobata showed antifungal activity against the phytopathogenic fungi Botrytis cinerea, Cladosporium cucumerinum, Phythophthora infestans, Pyricularia oryzae and Septoria tritici. Bioautography on thin-layer chromatograms was used to isolate six antifungal sesquiterpenes: 5- and 7-hydroxycalamenene, drimenol, drimenal, viridiflorol, gymnomitrol and three bisbibenzyls: 6 ',8'-dichloroisoplagiochin C, isoplagiochin D and 6'-chloroisoplagiochin D. Furthermore we report the isolation of gymnomitr-8(12)-en-4-one and the new coumarin 7,8-dihydroxycoumarin-7-O-beta-D-glucuronide. Their structures have been elucidated based on extensive NMR spectral evidence.

The incorporation of [1-13C]-labeled glucose into the irregular monoterpene artemisia ketone, the regular monoterpenes camphor and beta-thujone, the sesquiterpene germacrene D, the diterpene trans-phytol and beta-sitosterol and isofucosterol has been studied in axenic cultures of Tanacetum vulgare L. (Asteraceae). Quantitative 13C NMR spectroscopic analysis of the resulting labeling patterns showed that the isoprene units of the monoterpenes and the diterpene are formed via the methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) pathway, whereas the isoprene building blocks of the sesquiterpene and the sterols originate from the mevalonic acid (MVA) pathway., (Copyright 2004 Elsevier Ltd.)

Blepharostol, a new sesquiterpenoid alcohol with a rearranged drimane skeleton and five new ent-labdane diterpenoids, ent-labda-13(16),14-diene-8alpha-ol, ent-labda-13(16),14-diene-1beta,8alpha-diol, ent-labda-13(16),14-diene-8alpha,9beta-diol, ent-labda-13(16),14-diene-1beta,8alpha,9beta-triol and ent-8alpha,9beta-dihydroxylabda-13(16),14-dien-1-one, have been isolated from the liverwort Blepharostoma trichophyllum. Their structures have been assigned on the basis of their spectroscopic properties.

Eleven ent-clerodanes, 13-hydroxy-cis-ent-cleroda-3,14-diene, 15-hydroxy-cis-ent-cleroda-3,13(E)-diene, 1beta,12:15,16-diepoxy-cis-ent-cleroda-13(16),14-dien-18alpha,6alpha-olide, 8beta,12:15, 16-diepoxy-cis-ent-cleroda-13(16),14-dien-18alpha,6alpha-olide, 1beta,16:15,16-diepoxy-cis-ent-cleroda-12,14-dien-18alpha,6alpha-olide, 7beta,12:8beta,12-diepoxy-15-hydroxy-cis-ent-cleroda-13-en-16,15:18alpha,6alpha-diolide, 7beta,12:8beta,12-diepoxy-16-hydroxy-cis-ent-cleroda-13-en-15,16:18alpha,6alpha-diolide, 1alpha-acetoxy-8beta,12-epoxy-15-hydroxy-cis-ent-cleroda-13-en-16,15:18alpha,6alpha-diolide, 1beta,12-epoxy-16-hydroxy-cis-ent-cleroda-13-en-15,16:18alpha,6alpha-diolide, 8beta,12-epoxy-15-hydroxy-trans-cleroda-13-en-16,15:18alpha,6alpha-diolide, 8beta,12-epoxy-16-hydroxy-trans-cleroda-13-en-15,16:18alpha,6alpha-diolide along with the known clerodane diterpenes anastreptin and orcadensin have been isolated from the liverwort Adelanthus lindenbergianus (Lehm.) Mitt. Furthermore, three eudesmane sesquiterpenes together with the known (-)-1beta,10-epoxyaristolan, 3,4-seco-4(23),20(29)-lupadien-3,28-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester and two acetophenone derivatives were identified by spectroscopic methods, essentially MS and NMR experiments.

Two new herbertane sesquiterpenoids, (-)-herbertene-1,12-diol and (-)-gamma-herbertenol, a new aromadendrane, 9-acetoxy-10-hydroxyaromadendrane, a new rosane diterpenoid, 5,15-rosadiene-3,11-dione and a new phytane, 2Z-phytene-1,15,20-triol, along with the known (-)-alpha-herbertenol have been isolated from the liverwort Tylimanthus renifolius. Several flavones and flavanones with an unsubstituted ring B were also identified. This is the first report of this class of flavonoids from the Hepaticae. All structures were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy.

Seven new chlorinated bisbibenzyls (bazzanins L-R), of the isoplagiochin C type, as well as isoplagiochin C have been isolated from the liverwort Lepidozia incurvata. The structures have been elucidated based on extensive NMR spectral evidence and by mass spectrometry.

Six new labdane type diterpenoids, three seco-clerodane diterpenoids, jamesoniellide I, along with the two new jamesoniellides K and L, the sesquiterpene waitziacuminone and a new chlorinated bisbibenzyl, 6,6',10,10',12,12'-hexachloroisoperrottetin A, have been isolated from the liverwort Jamesoniella colorata. Their structures were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy. The absolute configuration of 3-oxo-labda-8(17),13(16),14-triene (1) was established by CD spectroscopy.

Eight lignan derivatives trilobatin D-K, as well as jamesopyrone were isolated from the liverwort Bazzania trilobata. Their structures have been elucidated based on extensive NMR spectral evidence.

Two sulphoxides (2,3,5-trithiahexane 5-oxide and 2,4,5,7-tetrathiaoctane 2-oxide), three novel sulphones [S-(methylthiomethyl)methanesulfonothioate, methylthio(methylthio-methyl)sulfone, 2,3,5,7-tetrathiaoctane3,3-dioxide] and four known sulphones [methylsulphonylmethylthiomethane, methylmethanethiosulfonate, bis-methyl-sulphonylmethane, and bis-(methylthiomethyl)sulfone] were isolated from the bark extracts of Scorodophloeus zenkeri Harms. The structures were determined by spectral methods, essentially MS and NMR experiments.
