Abstract

Joint European Torus (JET) plasma initiations that form a significant quantity of runaway electrons have been studied. It is shown that there is no direct relationship between the prefill pressure and breakdown electric field and signs of runaway electrons during the plasma initiation. Runaway electron generation is determined by the electric field and density development at and after burn-through. A clear criterion of density and electric field at one given point in time, which would ensure the avoidance of runaway electron generation, cannot be determined, because the timescales for the formation of runaway electrons and for the dynamics of the density differ significantly. Moreover, the formation process can be reversed, reducing the influence of runaway electrons on the discharge. Ensuring a high enough density will reduce the likelihood that runaway electron discharges are formed. It is also found that at JET the electric field often exceeds the critical electric field during the early stages of the current ramp-up phase, even when no signs of runaway electrons are present. Expected runaway current dynamics have been analysed using the discharge circuit equation. The comparison of the expected runaway electron current dynamics shows it to be significantly slower compared to theoretical expectations in the presence of a hot and dense thermal background plasma. This could be explained by an enhanced critical electric field and/or a reduced confinement of runaway electrons. The latter is shown to be affected by bursts of magnetohydrodynamic activity that are characteristic during the current ramp-up. The development of discharges in which the current is fully carried by runaway electrons happens on a slow timescale of several seconds, limited by the available flux. Such timescales are sufficient for improved active control of these events, avoiding runaway currents at plasma initiation exceeding values at which they could damage in-vessel components. The results provide insight into the improvement and interpretation of self-consistent modelling of runaway electron generation during the start-up of International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor discharges.

Abstract

Hybrid scenarios in present machines are often characterized by improved confinement compared with the IPB98(y, 2) empirical scaling law expectations. This work concentrates on isolating the impact of increased s/q at outer radii (where s is the magnetic shear) on core confinement in low-triangularity JET and ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) experiments. This is carried out by predictive heat and particle transport modelling using the integrated modelling code CRONOS coupled to the GLF23 turbulent transport model. For both machines, discharge pairs were analysed displaying similar pedestal confinement yet significant differences in core confinement. From these comparisons, it is found that s/q shaping at outer radii may be responsible for up to similar to 50% of the relative core confinement improvement observed in these specific discharges. This relative improvement is independent of the degree of rotational shear turbulence suppression assumed in the GLF23 model. However, employing the full GLF23 rotational shear model leads to an overprediction of the ion temperatures in all discharges analysed. Additional mechanisms for core confinement improvement are discussed and estimated. Further linear threshold analysis with QuaLiKiz is carried out on both pairs of discharges. This work aims to validate recent predictions of the ITER hybrid scenario also employing CRONOS/GLF23, where a high level of confinement and resultant fusion power sensitivity to the s/q profile was found.

Abstract

Low collisionality, low particle source, ELMy H-modes (type-III) with sawteeth are produced in JET in order to address the question of density profile evolution in the reference q95= 3 ITER scenario. The paper focuses on particle transport in the core zone around the mid-radius. The pedestal region including ELMs and the region affected by sawteeth are not considered. By replacing a significant part of the neutral beam heating by RF power the beam particle flux at mid-radius has been reduced to ?Beam/ne= 0.07?m?s?1. The additional flux due to wall neutrals is estimated as ?Wall/ne? 0.12?m?s?1. Density profiles are found to be modestly peaked under these conditions with a relative density difference of ?n/n= 0.23 across the zone not affected by sawteeth and ELMs. In a region around the mid-radius the ratio of effective particle diffusivity to electron thermal diffusivity is found to be De,eff/?e? 0.2, which might indicate an anomalous pinch provided the particle diffusivity Deis sufficiently large. The measured values of De,eff/?eare at the lower end of the range used in ITER models.

Abstract

Results from recent experiments to study the effects of divertor geometry and increased plasma shaping on the L–H transition threshold on JET are reported. Equivalent septum configurations run with the new septum replacement plate (SRP) in the MkII Gas Box divertor have shown that the presence of the septum lowers the L–H transition power threshold, Pth, by 20%. For X-point to virtual septum top distances of less than 6 cm, the SRP plasmas also demonstrate a significant decrease of the L–H Pth and pedestal electron temperature, Te with reduced X-point height. Although, the SRP plasma's Pth remains above that with the septum, there is no difference in the pedestal Te at the L–H transition. The influence of plasma shaping on the L–H transition has also been investigated for the first time on JET in a series of density scans at Ip/Bt of 2.5 MA/2.7 T. While keeping the lower triangularity, δlower, and divertor geometry constant, the upper triangularity, δupper, has been increased from 0.23 to 0.34 with no effect on Pth or the pedestal Te or Ti. In a separate edge ne scan, two configurations with different δupper/δlower values of 0.23/0.23 and 0.43/0.33 have been compared. A large difference in the transition threshold is observed at values of edge ne above 1.8 × 1019 m−3, with the higher δ plasmas characterized by Pth of up to 25% lower at the highest densities scanned. This is thought to be the result of lowered X-point and outer strike point heights with increased δ.

Abstract

L–H transition experiments have recently been performed on JET to characterize the local edge ion parameters. Evidence of a threshold in the edge ion temperature to access the H-mode is presented and comparisons are made with edge electron temperature. These results provide the first scaling of pedestal ion temperature on JET. The threshold edge ion temperature scales approximately linearly with toroidal magnetic field and shows no dependence on electron density in the range explored. Reference shots have been repeated with the ion ∇ B drift away from the X-point and counter neutral beam injection. The L–H transition is also considered in terms of dimensionless parameter space. The effective edge ion collisionality does not appear to play a significant role in the L–H transition, providing no clear distinction between the L- and H-modes. In contrast, the normalized poloidal ion gyroradius provides a sharp H-mode boundary at any given field and current, consistent with a threshold ion temperature for H-mode access being dependent on toroidal field but not on density. However, comparison of ρ* and with forward and reversed fields across a range of fields and currents demonstrates that these dimensionless parameters simply describe an operation trajectory for the JET L–H transition.
