Deep learning, a pivotal branch of artificial intelligence, has increasingly influenced the financial domain with its advanced data processing capabilities. This paper introduces Factor-GAN, an innovative framework that utilizes Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) technology for factor investing. Leveraging a comprehensive factor database comprising 70 firm characteristics, Factor-GAN integrates deep learning techniques with the multi-factor pricing model, thereby elevating the precision and stability of investment strategies. To explain the economic mechanisms underlying deep learning, we conduct a subsample analysis of the Chinese stock market. The findings reveal that the deep learning-based pricing model significantly enhances return prediction accuracy and factor investment performance in comparison to linear models. Particularly noteworthy is the superior performance of the long-short portfolio under Factor-GAN, demonstrating an annualized return of 23.52% with a Sharpe ratio of 1.29. During the transition from state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to non-SOEs, our study discerns shifts in factor importance, with liquidity and volatility gaining significance while fundamental indicators diminish. Additionally, A-share listed companies display a heightened emphasis on momentum and growth indicators relative to their dual-listed counterparts. Deep learning has achieved immense success in computer vision and has the potential to help physicians analyze visual content for disease and other abnormalities. However, the current state of deep learning is very much a black box, making medical professionals skeptical about integrating these methods into clinical practice. Several methods have been proposed to shed some light on these black boxes, but there is no consensus on the opinion of medical doctors that will consume these explanations. This paper presents a study asking medical professionals about their opinion of current state-of-the-art explainable artificial intelligence methods when applied to a gastrointestinal disease detection use case. We compare two different categories of explanation methods, intrinsic and extrinsic, and gauge their opinion of the current value of these explanations. The results indicate that intrinsic explanations are preferred and that physicians see value in the explanations. Based on the feedback collected in our study, future explanations of medical deep neural networks can be tailored to the needs and expectations of doctors. Reservoir reconstruction, where parameter prediction plays a key role, constitutes an extremely important part in oil and gas reservoir exploration. With the mature development of artificial intelligence, parameter prediction methods are gradually shifting from previous petrophysical models to deep learning models, which bring about obvious improvements in terms of accuracy and efficiency. However, it is difficult to achieve large amount of data acquisition required for deep learning due to the cost of detection, technical difficulties, and the limitations of complex geological parameters. To address the data shortage problem, a transfer learning prediction model based on long short-term memory neural networks has been proposed, and the model structure has been determined by parameter search and optimization methods in this paper. The proposed approach transfers knowledge from historical data to enhance new well prediction by sharing some parameters in the neural network structure. Moreover, the practicality and effectiveness of this method was tested by comparison based on two block datasets. A large volume of data is being captured through the Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU), which opens new opportunities and challenges to the study of transmission line faults. To be specific, the Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data represents many different states of the power networks. The states of the PMU device help to identify different types of transmission line faults. For a precise understanding of transmission line faults, only the parameters that contain voltage and current magnitude estimations are not sufficient. This requirement has been addressed by generating data with more parameters such as frequencies and phase angles utilizing the Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) for data acquisition. The data has been generated through the simulation of a transmission line model on ePMU DSA tools and Matlab Simulink. Different machine learning models have been trained with the generated synthetic data to classify transmission line fault cases. The individual models including Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), and K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) have outperformed other models in fault classification which have acquired a cross-validation accuracy of 99.84%, 99.83%, and 99.76% respectively across 10 folds. Soft voting has been used to combine the performance of these best-performing models. Accordingly, the constructed ensemble model has acquired a cross-validation accuracy of 99.88% across 10 folds. The performance of the combined models in the ensemble learning process has been analyzed through explainable AI (XAI) which increases the interpretability of the input parameters in terms of making predictions. Consequently, the developed model has been evaluated with several performance matrices, such as precision, recall, and f1 score, and also tested on the IEEE 14 bus system. To sum up, this article has demonstrated the classification of six scenarios including no fault and fault cases from transmission lines with a significant number of training parameters and also interpreted the effect of each parameter to make predictions of different fault cases with great success. Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models are being increasingly employed for medical imagery analyses, with both approaches used to enhance the accuracy of classification/prediction in the diagnoses of various cancers, tumors and bloodborne diseases. To date however, no review of these techniques and their application(s) within the domain of white blood cell (WBC) classification in blood smear images has been undertaken, representing a notable knowledge gap with respect to model selection and comparison. Accordingly, the current study sought to comprehensively identify, explore and contrast ML and DL methods for classifying WBCs. Following development and implementation of a formalized review protocol, a cohort of 136 primary studies published between January 2006 and May 2023 were identified from the global literature, with the most widely used techniques and best-performing WBC classification methods subsequently ascertained. Studies derived from 26 countries, with highest numbers from high-income countries including the United States (n = 32) and The Netherlands (n = 26). While WBC classification was originally rooted in conventional ML, there has been a notable shift toward the use of DL, and particularly convolutional neural networks (CNN), with 54.4% of identified studies (n = 74) including the use of CNNs, and particularly in concurrence with larger datasets and bespoke features e.g., parallel data pre-processing, feature selection, and extraction. While some conventional ML models achieved up to 99% accuracy, accuracy was shown to decrease in concurrence with decreasing dataset size. Deep learning models exhibited improved performance for more extensive datasets and exhibited higher levels of accuracy in concurrence with increasingly large datasets. Availability of appropriate datasets remains a primary challenge, potentially resolvable using data augmentation techniques. Moreover, medical training of computer science researchers is recommended to improve current understanding of leucocyte structure and subsequent selection of appropriate classification models. This study presents a surveillance system developed for early detection of forest fires. Deep learning is utilized for aerial detection of fires using images obtained from a camera mounted on a designed four-rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The object detection performance of YOLOv8 and YOLOv5 was examined for identifying forest fires, and a CNN-RCNN network was constructed to classify images as containing fire or not. Additionally, this classification approach was compared with the YOLOv8 classification. Onboard NVIDIA Jetson Nano, an embedded artificial intelligence computer, is used as hardware for real-time forest fire detection. Also, a ground station interface was developed to receive and display fire-related data. Thus, access to fire images and coordinate information was provided for targeted intervention in case of a fire. The UAV autonomously monitored the designated area and captured images continuously. Embedded deep learning algorithms on the Nano board enable the UAV to detect forest fires within its operational area. The detection methods produced the following results: 96% accuracy for YOLOv8 classification, 89% accuracy for YOLOv8n object detection, 96% accuracy for CNN-RCNN classification, and 89% accuracy for YOLOv5n object detection. The objectives are to improve the diagnostic efficiency and accuracy of epidemic pulmonary infectious diseases and to study the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in pulmonary infectious disease diagnosis and public health management. The computer tomography (CT) images of 200 patients with pulmonary infectious disease are collected and input into the AI-assisted diagnosis software based on the deep learning (DL) model, "UAI, pulmonary infectious disease intelligent auxiliary analysis system", for lesion detection. By analyzing the principles of convolutional neural networks (CNN) in deep learning (DL), the study selects the AlexNet model for the recognition and classification of pulmonary infection CT images. The software automatically detects the pneumonia lesions, marks them in batches, and calculates the lesion volume. The result shows that the CT manifestations of the patients are mainly involved in multiple lobes and density, the most common shadow is the ground-glass opacity. The detection rate of the manual method is 95.30%, the misdetection rate is 0.20% and missed diagnosis rate is 4.50%; the detection rate of the DL-based AI-assisted lesion method is 99.76%, the misdetection rate is 0.08%, and the missed diagnosis rate is 0.08%. Therefore, the proposed model can effectively identify pulmonary infectious disease lesions and provide relevant data information to objectively diagnose pulmonary infectious disease and manage public health. Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a condition characterized by a decline in cognitive abilities, specifically in memory, language, and attention, that is beyond what is expected due to normal aging. Detection of MCI is crucial for providing appropriate interventions and slowing down the progression of dementia. There are several automated predictive algorithms for prediction using time-to-event data, but it is not clear which is best to predict the time to conversion to MCI. There is also confusion if algorithms with fewer training weights are less accurate. We compared three algorithms, from smaller to large numbers of training weights: a statistical predictive model (Cox proportional hazards model, CoxPH), a machine learning model (Random Survival Forest, RSF), and a deep learning model (DeepSurv). To compare the algorithms under different scenarios, we created a simulated dataset based on the Alzheimer NACC dataset. We found that the CoxPH model was among the best-performing models, in all simulated scenarios. In a larger sample size (n = 6,000), the deep learning algorithm (DeepSurv) exhibited comparable accuracy (73.1%) to the CoxPH model (73%). In the past, ignoring heterogeneity in the CoxPH model led to the conclusion that deep learning methods are superior. We found that when using the CoxPH model with heterogeneity, its accuracy is comparable to that of DeepSurv and RSF. Furthermore, when unobserved heterogeneity is present, such as missing features in the training, all three models showed a similar drop in accuracy. This simulation study suggests that in some applications an algorithm with a smaller number of training weights is not disadvantaged in terms of accuracy. Since algorithms with fewer weights are inherently easier to explain, this study can help artificial intelligence research develop a principled approach to comparing statistical, machine learning, and deep learning algorithms for time-to-event predictions. Over recent decades, machine learning, an integral subfield of artificial intelligence, has revolutionized diverse sectors, enabling data-driven decisions with minimal human intervention. In particular, the field of educational assessment emerges as a promising area for machine learning applications, where students can be classified and diagnosed using their performance data. The objectives of Diagnostic Classification Models (DCMs), which provide a suite of methods for diagnosing students' cognitive states in relation to the mastery of necessary cognitive attributes for solving problems in a test, can be effectively addressed through machine learning techniques. However, the challenge lies in the latent nature of cognitive status, which makes it difficult to obtain labels for the training dataset. Consequently, the application of machine learning methods to DCMs often assumes smaller training sets with labels derived either from theoretical considerations or human experts. In this study, the authors propose a supervised diagnostic classification model with data augmentation (SDCM-DA). This method is designed to utilize the augmented data using a data generation model constructed by leveraging the probability of correct responses for each attribute mastery pattern derived from the expert-labeled dataset. To explore the benefits of data augmentation, a simulation study is carried out, contrasting it with classification methods that rely solely on the expert-labeled dataset for training. The findings reveal that utilizing data augmentation with the estimated probabilities of correct responses substantially enhances classification accuracy. This holds true even when the augmentation originates from a small labeled sample with occasional labeling errors, and when the tests contain lower-quality items that may inaccurately measure students' true cognitive status. Moreover, the study demonstrates that leveraging augmented data for learning can enable the successful classification of students, thereby eliminating the necessity for specifying an underlying response model.
