Skin cancer has a significant impact on the lives of many individuals annually and is recognized as the most prevalent type of cancer. In the United States, an estimated annual incidence of approximately 3.5 million people receiving a diagnosis of skin cancer underscores its widespread prevalence. Furthermore, the prognosis for individuals afflicted with advancing stages of skin cancer experiences a substantial decline in survival rates. This paper is dedicated to aiding healthcare experts in distinguishing between benign and malignant skin cancer cases by employing a range of machine learning and deep learning techniques and different feature extractors and feature selectors to enhance the evaluation metrics. In this paper, different transfer learning models are employed as feature extractors, and to enhance the evaluation metrics, a feature selection layer is designed, which includes diverse techniques such as Univariate, Mutual Information, ANOVA, PCA, XGB, Lasso, Random Forest, and Variance. Among transfer models, DenseNet-201 was selected as the primary feature extractor to identify features from data. Subsequently, the Lasso method was applied for feature selection, utilizing diverse machine learning approaches such as MLP, XGB, RF, and NB. To optimize accuracy and precision, ensemble methods were employed to identify and enhance the best-performing models. Depending on the degree of fracture, pelvic fracture can be accompanied by vascular damage, and in severe cases, it may progress to hemorrhagic shock. Pelvic radiography can quickly diagnose pelvic fractures, and the Association for Osteosynthesis Foundation and Orthopedic Trauma Association (AO/OTA) classification system is useful for evaluating pelvic fracture instability. This study aimed to develop a radiomics-based machine-learning algorithm to quickly diagnose fractures on pelvic X-ray and classify their instability. data used were pelvic anteroposterior radiographs of 990 adults over 18 years of age diagnosed with pelvic fractures, and 200 normal subjects. A total of 93 features were extracted based on radiomics:18 first-order, 24 GLCM, 16 GLRLM, 16 GLSZM, 5 NGTDM, and 14 GLDM features. To improve the performance of machine learning, the feature selection methods RFE, SFS, LASSO, and Ridge were used, and the machine learning models used LR, SVM, RF, XGB, MLP, KNN, and LGBM. Performance measurement was evaluated by area under the curve (AUC) by analyzing the receiver operating characteristic curve. The machine learning model was trained based on the selected features using four feature-selection methods. When the RFE feature selection method was used, the average AUC was higher than that of the other methods. Among them, the combination with the machine learning model SVM showed the best performance, with an average AUC of 0.75±0.06. By obtaining a feature-importance graph for the combination of RFE and SVM, it is possible to identify features with high importance. The AO/OTA classification of normal pelvic rings and pelvic fractures on pelvic AP radiographs using a radiomics-based machine learning model showed the highest AUC when using the SVM classification combination. Diabetes is a persistent metabolic disorder linked to elevated levels of blood glucose, commonly referred to as blood sugar. This condition can have detrimental effects on the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves as time passes. It is a chronic ailment that arises when the body fails to produce enough insulin or is unable to effectively use the insulin it produces. When diabetes is not properly managed, it often leads to hyperglycemia, a condition characterized by elevated blood sugar levels or impaired glucose tolerance. This can result in significant harm to various body systems, including the nerves and blood vessels. In this paper, we propose a multiclass diabetes mellitus detection and classification approach using an extremely imbalanced Laboratory of Medical City Hospital data dynamics. We also formulate a new dataset that is moderately imbalanced based on the Laboratory of Medical City Hospital data dynamics. To correctly identify the multiclass diabetes mellitus, we employ three machine learning classifiers namely support vector machine, logistic regression, and k-nearest neighbor. We also focus on dimensionality reduction (feature selection—filter, wrapper, and embedded method) to prune the unnecessary features and to scale up the classification performance. To optimize the classification performance of classifiers, we tune the model by hyperparameter optimization with 10-fold grid search cross-validation. In the case of the original extremely imbalanced dataset with 70:30 partition and support vector machine classifier, we achieved maximum accuracy of 0.964, precision of 0.968, recall of 0.964, F1-score of 0.962, Cohen kappa of 0.835, and AUC of 0.99 by using top 4 feature according to filter method. By using the top 9 features according to wrapper-based sequential feature selection, the k-nearest neighbor provides an accuracy of 0.935 and 1.0 for the other performance metrics. For our created moderately imbalanced dataset with an 80:20 partition, the SVM classifier achieves a maximum accuracy of 0.938, and 1.0 for other performance metrics. For the multiclass diabetes mellitus detection and classification, our experiments outperformed conducted research based on the Laboratory of Medical City Hospital data dynamics. Major depressive disorder (MDD), a prevalent mental health issue, affects more than 8% of the US population, and almost 17% in the young group of 18–25 years old. Since Covid-19, its prevalence has become even more significant. However, the remission (being free of depression) rates of first-line antidepressant treatments on MDD are only about 30%. To improve treatment outcomes, researchers have built various predictive models for treatment responses and yet none of them have been adopted in clinical use. One reason is that most predictive models are based on data from subjective questionnaires, which are less reliable. Neuroimaging data are promising objective prognostic factors, but they are expensive to obtain and hence predictive models using neuroimaging data are limited and such studies were usually in small scale (N<100). In this paper, we proposed an advanced machine learning (ML) pipeline for small training dataset with large number of features. We implemented multiple imputation for missing data and repeated K-fold cross validation (CV) to robustly estimate predictive performances. Different feature selection methods and stacking methods using 6 general ML models including random forest, gradient boosting decision tree, XGBoost, penalized logistic regression, support vector machine (SVM), and neural network were examined to evaluate the model performances. All predictive models were compared using model performance metrics such as accuracy, balanced accuracy, area under ROC curve (AUC), sensitivity and specificity. Our proposed ML pipeline was applied to a training dataset and obtained an accuracy and AUC above 0.80. But such high performance failed while applying our ML pipeline using an external validation dataset from the EMBARC study which is a multi-center study. Background: Cancer diagnosis based on machine learning has become a popular application direction. Support vector machine (SVM), as a classical machine learning algorithm, has been widely used in cancer diagnosis because of its advantages in high-dimensional and small sample data. However, due to the high-dimensional feature space and high feature redundancy of gene expression data, SVM faces the problem of poor classification effect when dealing with such data. Methods: Based on this, this paper proposes a hybrid feature selection algorithm combining information gain and grouping particle swarm optimization (IG-GPSO). The algorithm firstly calculates the information gain values of the features and ranks them in descending order according to the value. Then, ranked features are grouped according to the information index, so that the features in the group are close, and the features outside the group are sparse. Finally, grouped features are searched using grouping PSO and evaluated according to in-group and out-group. Results: Experimental results show that the average accuracy (ACC) of the SVM on the feature subset selected by the IG-GPSO is 98.50%, which is significantly better than the traditional feature selection algorithm. Compared with KNN, the classification effect of the feature subset selected by the IG-GPSO is still optimal. In addition, the results of multiple comparison tests show that the feature selection effect of the IG-GPSO is significantly better than that of traditional feature selection algorithms. Conclusion: The feature subset selected by IG-GPSO not only has the best classification effect, but also has the least feature scale (FS). Social media platforms serve as communication tools where users freely share information regardless of its accuracy. Propaganda on these platforms refers to the dissemination of biased or deceptive information aimed at influencing public opinion, encompassing various forms such as political campaigns, fake news, and conspiracy theories. This study introduces a Hybrid Feature Engineering Approach for Propaganda Identification (HAPI), designed to detect propaganda in text-based content like news articles and social media posts. HAPI combines conventional feature engineering methods with machine learning techniques to achieve high accuracy in propaganda detection. This study is conducted on data collected from Twitter via its API, and an annotation scheme is proposed to categorize tweets into binary classes (propaganda and non-propaganda). Hybrid feature engineering entails the amalgamation of various features, including Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), Bag of Words (BoW), Sentimental features, and tweet length, among others. Multiple Machine Learning classifiers undergo training and evaluation utilizing the proposed methodology, leveraging a selection of 40 pertinent features identified through the hybrid feature selection technique. All the selected algorithms including Multinomial Naive Bayes (MNB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree (DT), and Logistic Regression (LR) achieved promising results. The SVM-based HaPi (SVM-HaPi) exhibits superior performance among traditional algorithms, achieving precision, recall, F-Measure, and overall accuracy of 0.69, 0.69, 0.69, and 69.2%, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed approach is compared to well-known existing approaches where it overperformed most of the studies on several evaluation metrics. This research contributes to the development of a comprehensive system tailored for propaganda identification in textual content. Nonetheless, the purview of propaganda detection transcends textual data alone. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), accounting for 90% of all kidney cancer, is categorized into clear cell RCC (ccRCC) and non-clear cell RCC (non-ccRCC) for treatment based on the current NCCN Guidelines. Thus, the classification will be associated with therapeutic implications. This study aims to identify novel biomarkers to differentiate ccRCC from non-ccRCC using bioinformatics and machine learning. The gene expression profiles of ccRCC and non-ccRCC subtypes (including papillary RCC (pRCC) and chromophobe RCC (chRCC)), were obtained from TCGA. Differential expression genes (DEGs) were identified, and specific DEGs for ccRCC and non-ccRCC were explored using a Venn diagram. Gene Ontology and pathway enrichment analysis were performed using DAVID. The top ten expressed genes in ccRCC were then selected for machine learning analysis. Feature selection was operated to identify a minimum highly effective gene set for constructing a predictive model. The expression of best-performing gene set was validated on tissue samples from RCC patients using immunohistochemistry techniques. Subsequently, machine learning models for diagnosing RCC were developed using H-scores. There were 910, 415, and 835 genes significantly specific for DEGs in ccRCC, pRCC, and chRCC, respectively. Specific DEGs in ccRCC enriched in PD-1 signaling, immune system, and cytokine signaling in the immune system, whereas TCA cycle and respiratory, signaling by insulin receptor, and metabolism were enriched in chRCC. Feature selection based on Decision Tree Classifier revealed that the model with two genes, including NDUFA4L2 and DAT, had an accuracy of 98.89%. Supervised classification models based on H-score of NDUFA4L2, and DAT revealed that Decision Tree models showed the best performance with 82% accuracy and 0.9 AUC. NDUFA4L2 expression was associated with lymphovascular invasion, pathologic stage and pT stage in ccRCC. Using integrated bioinformatics and machine learning analysis, NDUFA4L2 and DAT were identified as novel biomarkers to differential diagnosis ccRCC from non-ccRCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mixing of cotton seeds of different cultivars and qualities can lead to differences in growth conditions and make field management difficult. In particular, except for yield loss, it can also lead to inconsistent cotton quality and poor textile product quality, causing huge economic losses to farmers and the cotton processing industry. However, traditional cultivar identification methods for cotton seeds are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and cumbersome, which cannot meet the needs of modern agriculture and modern cotton processing industry. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a fast, accurate, and non-destructive method for identifying cotton seed cultivars. In this study, hyperspectral images (397.32 nm—1003.58 nm) of five cotton cultivars, namely Jinke 20, Jinke 21, Xinluzao 64, Xinluzao 74, and Zhongmiansuo 5, were captured using a Specim IQ camera, and then the average spectral information of seeds of each cultivar was used for spectral analysis, aiming to estab-lish a cotton seed cultivar identification model. Due to the presence of many obvious noises in the < 400 nm and > 1000 nm regions of the collected spectral data, spectra from 400 nm to 1000 nm were selected as the representative spectra of the seed samples. Then, various denoising techniques, including Savitzky-Golay (SG), Standard Normal Variate (SNV), and First Derivative (FD), were applied individually and in combination to improve the quality of the spectra. Additionally, a successive projections algorithm (SPA) was employed for spectral feature selection. Based on the full-band spectra, a Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) model was established. Furthermore, spectral features and textural features were fused to create Random Forest (RF), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) identification models. The results showed that: (1) The SNV-FD preprocessing method showed the optimal denoising performance. (2) SPA highlighted the near-infrared region (800–1000 nm), red region (620–700 nm), and blue-green region (420–570 nm) for identifying cotton cultivar. (3) The fusion of spectral features and textural features did not consistently improve the accuracy of all modeling strategies, suggesting the need for further research on appropriate modeling strategies. (4) The ELM model had the highest cotton cultivar identification accuracy, with an accuracy of 100% for the training set and 98.89% for the test set. In conclusion, this study successfully developed a highly accurate cotton seed cultivar identification model (ELM model). This study provides a new method for the rapid and non-destructive identification of cotton seed cultivars, which will help ensure the cultivar consistency of seeds used in cotton planting, and improve the overall quality and yield of cotton. After adopting a combined approach of data-driven methods and machine learning, the prediction of material performance and the optimization of composition design can significantly reduce the development time of materials at a lower cost. In this research, we employed four machine learning algorithms, including linear regression, ridge regression, support vector regression, and backpropagation neural networks, to develop predictive models for the electrical performance data of titanium alloys. Our focus was on two key objectives: resistivity and the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR). Subsequently, leveraging the results of feature selection, we conducted an analysis to discern the impact of alloying elements on these two electrical properties.The prediction results indicate that for the resistivity data prediction task, the radial basis function kernel-based support vector machine model performs the best, with a correlation coefficient above 0.995 and a percentage error within 2%, demonstrating high predictive capability. For the TCR data prediction task, the best-performing model is a backpropagation neural network with two hidden layers, also with a correlation coefficient above 0.995 and a percentage error within 3%, demonstrating good generalization ability. The feature selection results using random forest and Xgboost indicate that Al and Zr have a significant positive effect on resistivity, while Al, Zr, and V have a significant negative effect on TCR. The conclusion of the composition optimization design suggests that to achieve both high resistivity and TCR, it is recommended to set the Al content in the range of 1.5% to 2% and the Zr content in the range of 2.5% to 3%. Depression is a serious mental health disorder affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Timely and precise recognition of depression is vital for appropriate mediation and effective treatment. Electroencephalography (EEG) has surfaced as a promising tool for inspecting the neural correlates of depression and therefore, has the potential to contribute to the diagnosis of depression effectively. This study presents an EEG-based mental depressive disorder detection mechanism using a publicly available EEG dataset called Multi-modal Open Dataset for Mental-disorder Analysis (MODMA). This study uses EEG data acquired from 55 participants using 3 electrodes in the resting-state condition. Twelve temporal domain features are extracted from the EEG data by creating a non-overlapping window of 10 seconds, which is presented to a novel feature selection mechanism. The feature selection algorithm selects the optimum chunk of attributes with the highest discriminative power to classify the mental depressive disorders patients and healthy controls. The selected EEG attributes are classified using three different classification algorithms i.e., Best- First (BF) Tree, k-nearest neighbor (KNN), and AdaBoost. The highest classification accuracy of 96.36% is achieved using BF-Tree using a feature vector length of 12. The proposed mental depressive classification scheme outperforms the existing state-of-the-art depression classification schemes in terms of the number of electrodes used for EEG recording, feature vector length, and the achieved classification accuracy. The escalating prevalence of cybersecurity risks calls for a focused strategy in order to attain efficient resolutions. This study introduces a detection model that employs a tailored methodology integrating feature selection using SHAP values, a shallow learning algorithm called PV-DM, and machine learning classifiers like XGBOOST. The efficacy of our suggested methodology is highlighted by employing the NSL-KDD and UNSW-NB15 datasets. Our approach in the NSL-KDD dataset exhibits exceptional performance, with an accuracy of 98.92%, precision of 98.92%, recall of 95.44%, and an F1-score of 96.77%. Notably, this performance is achieved by utilizing only four characteristics, indicating the efficiency of our approach. The proposed methodology achieves an accuracy of 82.86%, precision of 84.07%, recall of 77.70%, and an F1-score of 80.20% in the UNSW-NB15 dataset, using only six features. Our research findings provide substantial evidence of the enhanced performance of the proposed model compared to a traditional deep-learning model across all performance metrics.
