Regional and local authorities in Europe, particularly in the UK, should enjoy more power in decision making, both at the national and the European levels, to realize the goals of a closer Europe. The UK government has done little to strengthen the local bodies, and lack of proper representation of regional governments at the national level places them at a disadvantageous position at the European level politics. However, the EU gives importance to regional representation and participation and has created a 'committee of the regions' which helps to bring together regional governments of Europe. From the early 1990s, the UK government has taken a positive approach toward regionalism.
