The article reports that the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality will develop a rule requiring public utilities to reduce mercury emissions by 90 percent by year 2015. Electric companies must reduce mercury emissions from coal-burning power plants within nine years. According to governor Jennifer Granholm, mercury poses a real and serious health concern for residents. Michigan has joined other states who are suing the federal government, claiming that federal mercury emissions standards are weak.
