The article reports on a delayed announcement of Steven Johnson, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator (EPA) on a new smog standard that lowered the acceptable ozone levels from 80 to 75 part per billion released by EPA in March 2008. It is stated that EPA wanted to make the standard tougher and that Office of the Management and Budget objected with regards to its cost that caused the standard to be weakened. Furthermore, setting new standards confused the agency. Johnson states that U.S. President George Bush let him made the final determination.

The article presents the issuance of the final amendments to the Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plan requirements, by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in December 2006. Such changes include the alternative compliance option for qualified facilities, revised definition for oil-filled operational equipment, and the exemption from the SPCC rule for certain motive power containers. Meanwhile, the EPA has requested comment on extending the date of the preparation or amendment of the SPCC plans for implementation. Such proposal will allow the facility in operation to make further revisions in 2007 to the SPCC rule.

This article examines the new rules on low-sulfur diesel fuels published by the Environmental Protection Agency in the U.S. in May 2006. The newest addition to the agency's compliment of rules affecting the diesel fuel industry was motivated by the need for additional changes to the regulations. The rules mandate the use of lower-sulfur fuels in diesel engines beginning in 2006 for highway diesel, and 2007 for nonroad diesel fuel. Refiners and importers are required to produce highway diesel fuel meeting a 15-ppm maximum requirement starting in June 2006.

The article reports on the release by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency of its National Priority Chemicals Trends Report. The report made an analysis of 23 out of 31 priority chemicals present in industrial waste. The report said that the use of priority chemicals declined in waste by almost 6% since 2001. It also made an evaluation of the improvement in the reduction of the presence of 23 priority chemicals in waste from 2001 and 2003. Finally, the report furnished an evaluation of the trends foreseen in managing 23 priority chemicals from 1999 and 2003.
