Paper documents are an important carrier of information related to human civilization, with the reinforcement and protection of fragile paper documents being a key aspect of their protection. This research utilized amphoteric polyvinylamine polymer as a paper reinforcement agent, strengthening the Xuan paper commonly used in paper documents. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), solid-state 13C NMR, and other analytical methods were employed to compare the physical properties, micro-morphology, crystallinity, and aging resistance of the paper before and after reinforcement. Research was conducted on the effects of reinforcement, the aging resistance, and the effects on the fiber structure. The results indicate that polyethylenimine has a filling and bridging effect between the paper fibers. After treatment with polyethylenimine, there was a significant improvement in the folding endurance and tensile strength of the paper. Essential oils (EOs) have stability problems, including volatility, oxidation, photosensitivity, heat sensitivity, humidity sensitivity, pH sensitivity, and ion sensitivity. A drug delivery system is an effective way to stabilize EOs, especially due to the protective effect of polymeric drug carriers. Polysaccharides are frequently employed as drug carrier materials because they are highly safe, come in a variety of forms, and have plentiful sources. Interestingly, the EO drug delivery system is based on the biomimetic concept since it corresponds to the structure of plant tissue. In this paper, we associate the biomimetic plant-like structures of the EO drug delivery system with the natural forms of EO in plant tissues, and summarize the characteristics of polysaccharide-based drug carriers for EO protection. Thus, we highlight the research progress on polysaccharides and their modified materials, including gum arabic, starch, cellulose, chitosan, sodium alginate, pectin, and pullulan, and their use as biomimetic drug carriers for EO preparations due to their abilities and potential for EO protection. A biodegradable photodynamic antibacterial film (PS-CF) was prepared using the casting method, with κ-Carrageenan (κ-Car) as the film-forming substrate and curcumin-β-cyclodextrin (Cur-β-CD) complex as photosensitizer. Chilled pork samples were coated with PS-CF and stored at 4 °C to investigate the effects of PS-CF combined with LED light irradiation (425 nm, 45 min) (PS+L+) on pork preservation during 10 days of storage. The total viable count (TVC) of bacteria, total volatile basic nitrogen value (TVB-N) and the pH of pork treated with PS+L+ were all lower than the control, and the water-holding capacity (WHC) was higher. Ten days later, the TVB-N value was 12.35 ± 0.57 mg/100 g and the TVC value was 5.78 ± 0.17 log CFU/g, which was within the acceptable range. Sensory evaluation determined that the color, odor, and overall acceptability of pork treated with PS+L+ were significantly better than the control. These findings suggest that PS+L+ treatment effectively extended the shelf life of chilled pork from ~4–5 to 10 days. Correlation analysis showed that the sensory quality of the chilled pork significantly correlated with total bacterial counts, TVB-N and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) (p < 0.05), suggesting that these biomarkers could be used as standard indicators for evaluating the freshness of chilled pork. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of Cur-β-CD photodynamic antibacterial film for the preservation of chilled pork and provide a theoretical basis for the application of the film for the preservation of fresh food in general. To overcome the low water solubility and low bioavailability of curcumin (CUR), multiple delivery strategies have been proposed. Among these, cyclodextrin-based carriers have been widely used for the encapsulation and delivery of CUR. Cyclodextrins (CDs), as natural oligosaccharides, have been well known for their biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and internal hydrophobic and external hydrophilic structural features. This paper summarizes the recently reported CD-based carriers for encapsulating CUR. Particularly, the polymerization properties of CD self-assembly to enhance the encapsulation of CUR are discussed. In addition, the current progress on stimuli-responsive CD carriers for controlled release of CUR is described, which laid an important foundation for the development of CUR-based precision therapy in clinical practice. Dual functional graphene oxide (GO) microcapsules were fabricated through self-assembly in Pickering emulsions, carrying corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTA) on the microcapsule shells and encapsulating a self-healing agent epoxy monomer. The formation of the GO microcapsules was assisted by the interaction between BTA and GO, which provided robust encapsulation for the epoxy monomer. The loading capacity of BTA and epoxy monomer reached 90.5%. The addition of the GO microcapsules simultaneously promoted the corrosion protection and self-healing properties of the waterborne epoxy composite coatings. The healing efficiency of the composite coatings reached over 99.7% when the content of the microcapsules was 10 wt%. Medulla tetrapanacis is composed of a lignocellulosic biopolymer and has a regular porous structure, which makes it a potential biomass material for preparing porous N-doped biochar. Herewith, N-doped Medulla tetrapanacis biochar (UBC) was successfully prepared by modification with urea and NaHCO3 under pyrolysis at 700 °C. The nitrogen-containing groups were efficiently introduced into biochar, and the micro-pore structures of the UBC were developed with sizeable specific surface area, which was loaded with massive adsorption sites. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of the UBC conformed to pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model. The superior adsorption capacities of the UBC for methylene blue (MB) and congo red (CR) were 923.0 mg/g and 728.0 mg/g, and the capacities for Cu2+ and Pb2+ were 468.5 mg/g and 1466.5 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the UBC had a stronger affinity for Cr3+ and Fe3+ in multiple metal ions and retained at a preferable adsorption performance for dyes and heavy metals after five cycles. Precipitation, complexation, and physical adsorption were the main mechanisms of the UBC-adsorbing metal ions and dyes. Warp sizing is a key process in textile production. However, before the yarn/fabric finishing, such as dyeing, the paste adhering to the warp must be eliminated to ensure optimal dyeing properties and the flexibility of the fabric. Therefore, the sizing will often consume a lot of energy and produce a lot of industrial wastewater, which will cause serious harm to the environment. In this study, we have developed an energy saving and environmentally friendly starch-based slurry by modifying natural starch with acrylamide. The paste has excellent viscosity stability and fiber adhesion, and exhibits excellent performance during warp sizing. In addition, the slurry has good water solubility at 60–70 °C, so it is easy to desize at low temperatures. Because of this, the sizing of the warp can be deslimed directly from the yarn during subsequent washing processes. MXenes, as emerging 2D sensing materials for next-generation electronics, have attracted tremendous attention owing to their extraordinary electrical conductivity, mechanical strength, and flexibility. However, challenges remain due to the weak stability in the oxygen environment and nonnegligible aggregation of layered MXenes, which severely affect the durability and sensing performances of the corresponding MXene-based pressure sensors, respectively. Here, in this work, we propose an easy-to-fabricate self-assembly strategy to prepare multilayered MXene composite films, where the first layer MXene is hydrogen-bond self-assembled on the electrospun thermoplastic urethane (TPU) fibers surface and the anti-oxidized functionalized-MXene (f-MXene) is subsequently adhered on the MXene layer by spontaneous electrostatic attraction. Remarkably, the f-MXene surface is functionalized with silanization reagents to form a hydrophobic protective layer, thus preventing the oxidation of the MXene-based pressure sensor during service. Simultaneously, the electrostatic self-assembled MXene and f-MXene successfully avoid the invalid stacking of MXene, leading to an improved pressure sensitivity. Moreover, the adopted electrospinning method can facilitate cyclic self-assembly and the formation of a hierarchical micro-nano porous structure of the multilayered f-MXene/MXene/TPU (M-fM2T) composite. The gradient pores can generate changes in the conductive pathways within a wide loading range, broadening the pressure detection range of the as-proposed multilayered f-MXene/MXene/TPU piezoresistive sensor (M-fM2TPS). Experimentally, these novel features endow our M-fM2TPS with an outstanding maximum sensitivity of 40.31 kPa−1 and an extensive sensing range of up to 120 kPa. Additionally, our M-fM2TPS exhibits excellent anti-oxidized properties for environmental stability and mechanical reliability for long-term use, which shows only ~0.8% fractional resistance changes after being placed in a natural environment for over 30 days and provides a reproducible loading–unloading pressure measurement for more than 1000 cycles. As a proof of concept, the M-fM2TPS is deployed to monitor human movements and radial artery pulse. For the high-value utilization of hemicellulose-based composite films, the poor film-forming and mechanical properties of hemicellulose-based composite films must be surmounted crucially. Based on this, hemicellulose-based organic-inorganic composite films with good mechanical properties were prepared from quaternized hemicelluloses (QH), bentonite, and polyethyleneimine (PEI). The QH/PEI/bentonite composite films were prepared by vacuum filtration, and the properties of the composite film were investigated. The results showed that the QH was inserted into bentonite nanosheets through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. PEI was cross-linked with hemicellulose by hydroxyl groups, electrostatically attracted by the bentonite flake layers. The mechanical properties of the composite films were significantly increased by the incorporation of PEI. When the PEI content was 20%, the tensile stress of the composite film was increased by 155.18%, and the maximum tensile stress was reached 80.52 MPa. The composite films had strong UV absorption ability with the transmittance was almost 0 in the UV region from 200 to 300 nm. The thermal property of composite film was also improved, and the residual mass increased by three times compared to QH. Chemical sand-fixing technology has shown good potential in preventing desertification, but the effect is determined by materials. In this paper, the adsorption behavior of quartz and six common polymer sand-fixing agents under dry conditions was studied by molecular dynamics method. The results show that all polymers could be adsorbed on the surface of quartz and their functional groups play an important role in the adsorption process. Compared with other materials, the binding energy and the number of hydrogen bonds of PAA-quartz composites were improved by 30.7–65.6% and 8.3–333.3%, respectively. It was found that the number of hydrogen bonds formed under the unit molecular was positively correlated with the mechanical properties of the improved sandy soil. This study provides an accurate, efficient and inexpensive qualitative evaluation method for the curing effect of sand fixers, which will assist in the screening and development of new high performance sand fixers. MK-2048 is a second-generation integrase inhibitor active against HIV, which has been applied vaginally using ring formulations. In this work, a nanoparticle-in-film technology was developed as a discrete pre-exposure prophylactic product option against HIV for an extended duration of use. A film platform loaded with poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (PNP) encapsulating MK-2048 was engineered. MK-2048 PNPs were loaded into films that were manufactured via the solvent casting method. Physicochemical and mechanical properties, in vitro efficacy, Lactobacillus compatibility, in vitro and ex vivo permeability, and in vivo pharmacokinetics in macaques were evaluated. PNPs with a mean diameter of 382.2 nm and −15.2 mV zeta potential were obtained with 95.2% drug encapsulation efficiency. PNP films showed comparable in vitro efficacy to free MK-2048 (IC50 0.46 vs. 0.54 nM) and were found to have no impact on Lactobacillus. MK-2048 encapsulated in PNPs showed an increase in permeability (>4-fold) compared to the free MK-2048 in MDCKII cell lines. Furthermore, PNPs had higher ectocervical tissue permeability (1.7-fold) compared to free MK-2048. PNP films showed sustained drug levels for at least 3 weeks in the macaque vaginal fluid. The interfacial effect is one of the significant factors in the glass-transition temperature (Tg) of the polymeric thin film system, competing against the free surface effect. Herein, the Tgs of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films with different thicknesses and substrates are studied by fluorescence measurements, focusing on the influence of interfacial effects on the Tgs. The strong interaction between PMMA and quartz substrate leads to increased Tgs with the decreased thickness of the film. The plasmonic silver substrate causes enhanced fluorescence intensity near the interface, resulting in the delayed reduction of the Tgs with the increasing film thickness. Moreover, as a proof of the interface-dependent Tgs, hydrogen bonds of PMMA/quartz and molecules orientation of PMMA/silver are explored by the Raman spectroscopy, and the interfacial interaction energy is calculated by the molecular dynamics simulation. Styrene-butadiene styrene graphene oxide nanoplatelets (SBS-g-GOs)-modified asphalt was prepared by reacting thiolated GOs (GOs-SH) with SBS in asphalt using a thiol-ene click reaction. The temperature resistance and mechanical properties of asphalts were analyzed by dynamic shear rheology (DSR) and multiple-stress creep-recovery (MSCR) tests, which revealed that an optimum amount of GOs-SH (0.02%) can effectively improve the low temperature and anti-rutting performance of SBS asphalt. Segregation experiments showed that SBS-g-GOs possessed good stability and dispersion in base asphalt. Fluorescence microscopy results revealed that the addition of GOs-SH promoted the formation of SBS network structure. Textural and morphological characterization of GOs-SH and SBS were achieved by Fourier transform infra-red (FT-IR) spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), atomic-force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while surface chemical composition was tested by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Based on textural characterization data, a suitable reaction mechanism was proposed that involved the preferential reaction between GOs-SH and 1,2 C=C of SBS. The currently designed GOs-SH incorporated asphalt via thiol-ene click reaction provides new ideas for the preparation of modified asphalt with enhanced mechanical properties for target-oriented applications. In this paper, a template-filling method was found to prepare composition gradient gelatin films by incorporating α-[3-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) propyl]-ω-butyl-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS–E) grafted gelatin (PGG) into a gradient gelatin mesh template. The method can be used to prepare other composition gradient biopolymer films. Gradient mesh template prepared by the methacrylic anhydride cross-linked gelatin under temperature gradient field. The porosity of the template decreased from 89 to 35% which was accompanied by decrease in average pore size from 160 to 50 µm. Colloidal particles about 0.9~10 µm were formed from PGG after adding them to a mixed solvent system of 9:1 (v/v) of ethanol/water, which were filled in the mesh template under vacuum (0.06 MPa). A gradient film was obtained after drying at room temperature for 48 h. The results of scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray combined with freezing microtome and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy suggested that the distribution of the Si element along the thickness showed a typical gradient pattern, which led to hydrophilic/hydrophobic continuous changing along the thickness of film. The water vapor permeability, thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical tensile results show that the gradient films had excellent water vapor permeability and flexibility, and hence could be used as biomimetic materials and leather finishing agents. Bone fractures and defects are a major health issue and have reportedly affected over 455 million individuals globally to date. Bone tissue engineering has gained great success in bone defect repair and bone reconstruction based on the use of nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) or collagen (COL). Both nHA and COL exhibit osteogenic induction capacity to support bone tissue regeneration; however, the former suffers from poor flexibility and the latter lacks mechanical strength. Biological scaffolds created by combining nHA and COL (nHA/COL) can overcome the drawbacks imposed by individual materials and, therefore, have become widely applied in tissue engineering. The composite scaffolds can further promote tissue reconstruction by allowing the loading of various growth factors. Naringin (NG) is a natural flavonoid. Its molecular weight is 580.53 Da, lower than that of many growth factors, and it causes minimal immune responses when being introduced in vivo. In addition, naringin is safe, non-toxic, inexpensive to produce, and has superior bio-properties. In this study, we introduced NG into a nHA/COL scaffold (NG/nHA/COL) and exploited the potentials of the NG/nHA/COL scaffold in enhancing bone tissue regeneration. NG/nHA/COL scaffolds were fabricated by firstly combining nHA and collagen at different compositional ratios, followed by NG encapsulation. NG release tests showed that the scaffold with a nHA/COL mass ratio of 7:3 exhibited the optimal property. The in vitro cell study showed the desirable biocompatibility of the NG/nHA/COL scaffold, and its effective promotion for the osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), as proved by an increased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, the formation of more calcium nodules, and a higher expression of osteogenic-related genes involving Osteocalcin (OCN), BMP-2, and Osteopontin (OPN), compared with the control and nHA/COL groups. When administered into rats with skull defects, the NG/nHA/COL scaffold significantly promoted the reconstruction of bone tissues and the early repair of skull defects, indicating the great potential of NG/nHA/COL scaffolds in bone tissue engineering. A new approach for flame retardant functional finishing of textiles was explored to improve flame retardancy of cotton fabrics by simple physical adhesion method. Mg(OH)2 was adhered to cotton fiber with the aid of fiber swelling in ionic liquid on heating and shrinkage on washing to obtain flame retardancy. The effects of immobilizing condition and methods on flame retardancy were discussed. The surface morphology, crystal structure, combustion behavior, thermal and physical properties of cotton fabric adhered with Mg(OH)2 were analyzed. The afterflame time and afterglow time of adhered cotton fabric were significantly reduced to less than 5 s. The thermal weight loss of cotton fabric was increased by 11.7% and the total heat released per unit mass was decreased by 20.9% after MH adhesion. The simple eco-friendly adhesion method provided a convenient approach for the development and application of flame retardant functional cellulosic textiles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The method capable of rapid and sensitive detection of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) is necessary and receiving increasing attention. In consideration of the vast signal amplification of fluorescent conjugated polymers (FCPs) for high sensitivity detection and the potential applications of boron-containing materials in the emerging sensing fields, the organoboron FCPs, poly (3-aminophenyl boronic acid) (PABA) is directly synthesized via free-radical polymerization reaction by using the commercially available 3-aminophenyl boronic acid (ABA) as the functional monomer and ammonium persulfate as the initiator. PABA is employed as a fluorescence sensor for sensing of trace BPO based on the formation of charge-transfer complexes between PABA and BPO. The fluorescence emission intensity of PABA demonstrates a negative correlation with the concentration of BPO. And a linear range of 8.26 × 10−9 M–8.26 × 10–4 M and a limit of detection of 1.06 × 10–9 M as well as a good recovery (86.25%–111.38%) of BPO in spiked real samples (wheat flour and antimicrobial agent) are obtained. Although sulfonic acid (SA)-based proton-exchange membranes (PEMs) dominate fuel cell applications at low temperature, while sulfonation on polymers would strongly decay the mechanical stability limit the applicable at elevated temperatures due to the strong dependence of proton conduction of SA on water. For the purpose of bifunctionally improving mechanical property and high-temperature performance, Nafion membrane, which is a commercial SA-based PEM, is composited with fabricated silica nanofibers with a three-dimensional network structure via electrospinning by considering the excellent water retention capacity of silica. The proton conductivity of the silica nanofiber–Nafion composite membrane at 110 °C is therefore almost doubled compared with that of a pristine Nafion membrane, while the mechanical stability of the composite Nafion membrane is enhanced by 44%. Isotactic polybutylene-1 (iPB) has lots of advantages and is best used as hot water pipe. However, to transform into stable crystal form I, the iPB needs as long as 7 days. In this process, the irreversible damage brings great difficulties to the use of the iPB. The method which convert it directly into crystal I has shortcomings such as being requiring complex operation and being expensive. In this study, an innovative idea was put forward, not paying attention to the crystal transformation of iPB but only focusing on reducing the time it can be applied. In this study, bamboo powder was modified by the silane coupling agent KH570 (KBP) to prepare iPB/KBP composite. The infiltration test and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis showed that the hydrophilicity of KBP is greatly reduced, which can greatly improve the compatibility of the iPB and KBP. The tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of the composites storage for 3 days is equal to the pure iPB with storage 7 days with the KBP additions of 3%, 3%, 7%, and 5%, respectively. The heat deformation temperature (HDT) of the composite with 3% KBP after 1-day storage reached the value of pure iPB storage for 7 days. This provides more space and possibilities for the industrialization of the iPB. The crystallization behavior of iPB/KBP composites proves that the addition of KBP accelerates the crystallization rate of iPB, but the crystallinity of the iPB/KBP composites is not changed. The SEM photograph of iPB/KBP composites showed that when the KBP addition was low the compatibility between KBP and iPB was good. Through a covalent grafting reaction, octadecyl amine (ODA) was grafted on the surface of waste rubber powder (WRP) to obtain an ODA-WRP modifier, which was in turn compounded with a styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS) to prepare ODA-WRP/SBS-modified asphalt. The three major indicators (i.e., dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), multi-stress creep recovery (MSCR), and separation tests) showed that 1-ODA-WRP effectively improved the complex shear modulus (G*), elastic Modulus (G′), and loss modulus (G″) by 36.47%, 40.57%, and 34.77% (64 °C and 10 Hz), respectively, as compared to pristine SBS-modified asphalt. Fluorescence microscopy (FM) results concluded that the enhancement in mechanical properties was accredited to the better compatibility of various components in asphalt and establishment of network structure between ODA-WRP and SBS in ODA-WRP/SBS-modified asphalt. Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses confirmed the successful synthesis of ODA-WRP. A hyper-branched sulfonated polyimide (s-PI) was synthesized successfully and composited with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to achieve ultra-high methanol-permeation resistive for direct methanol fuel cell application. The optimized s-PI-PVDF composite membrane exhibited methanol resistivity low to 1.80 × 10−8 cm2/s, two orders of magnitude lower than the value of the commercial Nafion 117 membrane (60 × 10−7 cm2/s). At the same time, the tensile strength of the composite membrane is 22 MPa, which is comparable to the value of the Nafion 117 membrane.
