For rubber-like materials, there are three popular methods of equibiaxial tension available: inflation tension, equibiaxial planar tension, and radial tension. However, no studies have addressed the accuracy and comparability of these tests. In this work, we model the tension tests for a hyperelastic electroactive polymer (EAP) membrane material using finite element method (FEM) and investigate their experimental accuracy. This study also analyzes the impact of apparatus structure parameters and specimen dimensions on experimental performances. Additionally, a tensile efficiency is proposed to assess non-uniform deformation in equibiaxial planar tension and radial tension tests. The sample points for calculating deformation in inflation tensions should be taken near the top of the inflated balloon to obtain a more accurate characteristic curve; the deformation simulation range will be constrained by the material model and its parameters within a specific limit (λ ≈ 1.9); if the inflation hole size is halved, the required air pressure must be doubled to maintain equivalent stress and strain values, resulting in a reduction in half in inflation height and decreased accuracy. The equibiaxial planar tension test can enhance uniform deformation and reduce stress errors to as low as 2.1% (at λ = 4) with single-corner-point tension. For circular diaphragm specimens in radial tension tests, increasing the number of cuts and using larger punched holes results in more uniform deformation and less stress error, with a minimum value of 3.83% achieved for a specimen with 24 cuts and a 5 mm punched hole. In terms of tensile efficiency, increasing the number of tensile points in the equibiaxial planar tension test can improve it; under radial tension, increasing the number of cuts and decreasing the diameter of the punched hole on the specimen has a hedging effect. The findings of this study are valuable for accurately evaluating various equibiaxial tension methods and analyzing their precision, as well as providing sound guidance for the effective design of testing apparatus and test plans. The problem of bacteria-induced infections threatens the lives of many patients. Meanwhile, the misuse of antibiotics has led to a significant increase in bacterial resistance. There are two main ways to alleviate the issue: one is to introduce antimicrobial agents to medical devices to get local drug releasing and alleviating systemic toxicity and resistance, and the other is to develop new antimicrobial methods to kill bacteria. New antimicrobial methods include cationic polymers, metal ions, hydrophobic structures to prevent bacterial adhesion, photothermal sterilization, new biocides, etc. Biodegradable biocompatible synthetic polymers have been widely used in the medical field. They are often used in tissue engineering scaffolds as well as wound dressings, where bacterial infections in these medical devices can be serious or even fatal. However, such materials usually do not have inherent antimicrobial properties. They can be used as carriers for drug delivery or compounded with other antimicrobial materials to achieve antimicrobial effects. This review focuses on the antimicrobial behavior, preparation methods, and biocompatibility testing of biodegradable biocompatible synthetic polymers. Degradable biocompatible natural polymers with antimicrobial properties are also briefly described. Finally, the medical applications of these polymeric materials are presented. To reduce the amount of citral used without reducing the antimildew performance of bamboo, the citral compound preparation process, the distribution of the compound in bamboo, and its antimildew performance were investigated using the Oxford cup method, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and ultraviolet spectrophotometry. The results revealed that the combination of citral with cinnamaldehyde or thymol may lead to partial chemical reactions, which may change the chemical structure of citral and affect its bacteriostatic properties. The bacteriostatic properties of the citraldehyde thymol compound against common molds of bamboo were considerably superior to those of the citral cinnamaldehyde compound. The limonaldehyde thymol compound showed a low distribution trend outside and vice versa inside in the treated bamboo. The citral thymol compound exhibited good antimildew performance at a concentration of 200 mg/mL. The citral thymol compound could reduce the amount of citral by approximately 67 mg/mL without reducing the antimildew performance of bamboo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present study, the sustained-release system loading citral was synthesised by using PNIPAm nanohydrogel as a carrier and analysed its drug-release kinetics and mechanism. Four release models, namely zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, and Peppas, were employed to fit the experimental data, and the underlying action mechanism was analysed. The optimised system was applied to treat a bamboo mould, followed by assessment of the mould-proof performance. Our experimental results revealed that the release kinetics equation of the system conformed to the first order; the higher the external temperature, the better the match was. In the release process, PNIPAm demonstrated a good protection and sustained-release effect on citral. Under the pressure of 0.5 MPa, immersion time of 120 min, and the system concentration ratio of 1, the optimal drug-loading parameters were obtained using the slow-release system with the best release parameters. Compared to the other conditions, bamboos treated with pressure impregnation demonstrated a better control effect on bamboo mould, while the control effect on Penicillium citrinum, Trichoderma viride, Aspergillus niger, and mixed mould was 100% after 28 days. Chitosan nanoparticles have been considered as potential candidates for drug loading/release in drug delivery systems. In this paper, nanoparticles (HACAFNP) loading adriamycin based on 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan grafting folic acid (HACF) were synthesized. The surface morphology of the novel nanoparticles was spherical or oval, and the nanoparticles exhibited a relatively small hydrodynamic diameter (85.6 ± 2.04 nm) and positive zeta potential (+21.06 ± 0.96 mV). The drug release of nanoparticles was assayed and represented a burst effect followed by a long-term steady release. Afterward, the antioxidant efficiencies of nanoparticles were assayed. In particular, the target nanoparticles exhibited significant enhancement in radical scavenging activities. Cytotoxicities against cancer cells (MCF-7, BGC-823, and HEPG-2) were estimated in vitro, and results showed nanoparticles inhibited the growth of cancer cells. It's worth noting that the inhibition index of HACAFNP against BGC-823 cells was 71.19% with the sample concentration of 25 μg/mL, which was much higher than the inhibitory effect of ADM. It was demonstrated that the novel nanoparticles with dramatically enhanced biological activity, reduced cytotoxicity, and steady release could be used as the practical candidates for drug loading/release in a delivery system. A novel and green method for the preparation of chitosan derivatives bearing organic acids was reported in this paper. In order to improve the antioxidant activity of chitosan, eight different hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chitosan derivatives were successfully designed and synthesized via introducing of organic acids onto chitosan by mild and non-toxic ion exchange. The data of Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), 1H NMR, and elemental analysis for chitosan derivatives indicated the successful conjugation of organic acid salt with hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC). Meanwhile, the antioxidant activity of the chitosan derivatives was evaluated in vitro. The results indicated that the chitosan derivatives possessed dramatic enhancements in DPPH-radical scavenging activity, superoxide-radical scavenging activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging ability, and reducing power. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of the synthesized compounds was investigated in vitro on L929 cells and showed low cytotoxicity. Thus, the enhanced antioxidant property of all novel chitosan products might be a great advantage, while applied in a wide range of applications in the form of antioxidant in biomedical, food, and cosmetic industry. Injectable hydrogels have been widely applied in the field of regenerative medicine. However, current techniques for injectable hydrogels are facing a challenge when trying to generate a biomimetic, porous architecture that is well-acknowledged to facilitate cell behaviors. In this study, an injectable, interconnected, porous hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel based on an in-situ bubble self-generation and entrapment process was developed. Through an amide reaction between HA and cystamine dihydrochloride activated by EDC/NHS, CO2 bubbles were generated and were subsequently entrapped inside the substrate due to a rapid gelation-induced retention effect. HA hydrogels with different molecular weights and concentrations were prepared and the effects of the hydrogel precursor solution's concentration and viscosity on the properties of hydrogels were investigated. The results showed that HA10-10 (10 wt.%, MW 100,000 Da) and HA20-2.5 (2.5 wt.%, MW 200,000 Da) exhibited desirable gelation and obvious porous structure. Moreover, HA10-10 represented a high elastic modulus (32 kPa). According to the further in vitro and in vivo studies, all the hydrogels prepared in this study show favorable biocompatibility for desirable cell behaviors and mild host response. Overall, such an in-situ hydrogel with a self-forming bubble and entrapment strategy is believed to provide a robust and versatile platform to engineer injectable hydrogels for a variety of applications in tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and personalized therapeutics. In this study, starch was chemically modified to improve its antioxidant activity. Five novel cationic 1,2,3-triazole functionalized starch derivatives were synthesized by using "click" reaction and N-alkylation. A convenient method for pre-azidation of starch was developed. The structures of the derivatives were analyzed using FTIR and 1H NMR. The radicals scavenging abilities of the derivatives against hydroxyl radicals, DPPH radicals, and superoxide radicals were tested in vitro in order to evaluate their antioxidant activity. Results revealed that all the cationic starch derivatives (2a–2e), as well as the precursor starch derivatives (1a–1e), had significantly improved antioxidant activity compared to native starch. In particular, the scavenging ability of the derivatives against superoxide radicals was extremely strong. The improved antioxidant activity benefited from the enhanced solubility and the added positive charges. The biocompatibility of the cationic derivatives was confirmed by the low hemolytic rate (<2%). A new class of chitosan derivatives possessing thiourea salts were synthesized to improve the solubility and the antioxidant activity of chitosan. Firstly, chitosan was modified to carboxymethyl chitosan, combining carboxymethyl chitosan with thiourea salts that have different structures to form new chitosan derivatives. The chitosan and chitosan derivatives were characterized by FT-IR, 13C NMR, TGA, and elemental analyses. The new peaks of thiourea salts could be clearly observed at about 1240 cm–1 in the IR spectra, and the peak of C=S was clearly observed at around 180 ppm in the 13C NMR. IR spectra and 13C NMR of the structural units of these polymers validated the chitosan derivatives possessing thiourea salts were successfully synthesized. Their antioxidant properties were tested, including DPPH-radical scavenging ability, superoxide-radical scavenging ability, and hydroxyl-radical scavenging ability. Our results suggested the increase of thiourea salt groups in chitosan derivatives promotes the scavenging effect. The scavenging activity of 4TMCMCS, TMCMCS. 4,4DCMCS, and 4ACMCS against DPPH-radical and superoxide-radical were more than 90% at 1.6 mg/mL, respectively. In the cytotoxicity assay, no cytotoxicity was observed for the L929 cells with chitosan and its derivatives at all testing concentrations. These results demonstrated that the combination of chitosan and thiourea salt groups improved the antioxidant activity of chitosan, and the antioxidants or free radical scavengers based on natural polymers and thiourea salts showed potential applications. In order to improve the bioactivity of chitosan, we synthesized a novel series of chitosan derivatives: firstly, chitosan was reacted with methylclhlorofonmate obtaining N-methoxyformylated chitosan (1), which was then converted into N-pyridylurea chitosan derivatives (2a-2c) by amine-ester exchange reaction. In addition, N-pyridylurea chitosan derivatives were conducted by reacting with iodomethane to obtain quaternized N-pyridylurea chitosan derivatives (3a-3c). The structural characteristics of as-prepared chitosan derivatives were confirmed by fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), elemental analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Meanwhile, the antioxidant activity of the chitosan derivatives was assessed in vitro. As shown in this paper, the antioxidant activity decreased in the order: c > b > a. Moreover, after the quaternization with iodomethane, quaternized N-pyridylurea chitosan derivatives immediately exhibited enhanced antioxidant capacity compared with N-pyridylurea chitosan derivatives. For example, in 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, the scavenging activities of 3a-3c were 91.75%, 93.63%, and 97.63% while 2a-2c were 42.32%, 42.97%, and 43.07% at 0.4 mg/mL. L929 cells were also adopted for cytotoxicity test of chitosan and synthesized derivatives by CCK-8 assay and all samples showed decreased cytotoxicity. In this paper, we report chemical modifications of inulin by seven kinds of aromatic Schiff bases, which are different from their substituent groups. The obtained inulin derivatives were confirmed by FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. Then, we studied their antifungal activity against four kinds of plant pathogens involving Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerium Owen, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum, and Phomopsis asparagi by the mycelium growth rate method. The results revealed that all inulin derivatives were endowed with significant antifungal activity compared to inulin. Among them, 6-amino-(N-4-chlorobenzylidene)-6-deoxy-3,4-di-O-acetyl inulin (4CBSAIL) and 6-amino-(N-3,4-dichlorobenzylidene)-6-deoxy-3,4-di-O-acetyl inulin (3,4DCBSAIL), which were synthesized from p-chlorobenzaldehyde and 3,4-dichlorobenzaldehyde, could completely inhibit the growth of the test fungi at 1.0 mg/mL. The inhibitory indices of the inulin derivatives were related to the type, position, and number of substituent groups (halogens) on the Schiff bases. The results confirmed that it was feasible to chemically modify inulin with Schiff bases to confer high antifungal activity to inulin. Poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS), a biodegradable elastomer, has been extensively explored in biomedical applications for its favorable mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Efforts have been made to fabricate multifunctional PGS copolymer in recent years, in particular PGS-co-PEG (poly(glycerol sebacate)-co-polyethylene glycol) polymers. However, rare research has been systematically conducted on the effect of reactant ratios on physicochemical properties and biocompatibility of PGS copolymer till now. In this study, a serial of PEGylated PGS (PEGS) with PEG content from 20% to 40% and carboxyl to hydroxyl from 0.67 to 2 were synthesized by thermal curing process. The effects of various PEGS on the mechanical strength and biological activity were further compared and optimized. The results showed that the PEGS elastomers around 20PEGS-1.0C/H and 40PEGS-1.5C/H exhibited the desirable hydrophilicity, degradation behaviors, mechanical properties and cell viability. Subsequently, the potential applications of the 20PEGS-1.0C/H and 40PEGS-1.5C/H in bone repair scaffold and vascular reconstruction were investigated and the results showed that 20PEGS-1.0C/H and 40PEGS-1.5C/H could significantly improve the mechanical strength for the calcium phosphate scaffolds and exhibited preferable molding capability for fabrication of the vascular substitute. As a renewable, biocompatible, and biodegradable polysaccharide, inulin has a good solubility in water and some physiological functions. Chemical modification is one of the important methods to improve the bioactivity of inulin. In this paper, based on 6-amino-6-deoxy-3,4-acetyl inulin (3), three kinds of Schiff bases of inulin bearing pyridine rings were successfully designed and synthesized. Detailed structural characterization was carried out using FTIR, 13C NMR, and 1H NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Moreover, the antifungal activity of Schiff bases of inulin against three plant pathogenic fungi, including Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.niveum, and Phomopsis asparagi, were evaluated using in vitro hypha measurements. Inulin, as a natural polysaccharide, did not possess any antifungal activity at the tested concentration against the targeted fungi. Compared with inulin and the intermediate product 6-amino-6-deoxy-3,4-acetyl inulin (3), all the synthesized Schiff bases of inulin derivatives with >54.0% inhibitory index at 2.0 mg/mL exhibited enhanced antifungal activity. 3NS, with an inhibitory index of 77.0% exhibited good antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea at 2.0 mg/mL. Many saccharides are attractive targets for biomaterial applications, due to their abundance, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. In this article, a synthesis process of 6-N-substituted cationic inulin derivatives, including 6-pyridyl-6-deoxyinulin bromide (PIL), 6-(2-amino-pyridyl)-6-deoxyinulin bromide (2APIL), 6-(3-amino-pyridyl)-6-deoxyinulin bromide (3APIL), 6-(4-amino-pyridyl)-6-deoxyinulin bromide (4APIL), 6-(2,3-diamino-pyridyl)-6-deoxyinulin bromide (2,3DAPIL), 6-(3,4-diamino-pyridyl)-6-deoxyinulin bromide (3,4DAPIL), and 6-(2,6-diamino-pyridyl)-6-deoxyinulin bromide (2,6DAPIL) was described. The C6-OH of inulin was first activated by PPh3/N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) bromination. Then, pyridine and different kinds of amino-pyridine groups (different position and different numbers of amino) were grafted onto inulin, respectively, via nucleophilic substitution. Then, we confirmed their structure by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. After this, their radical scavenging activities against hydroxyl radical and diphenylpicryl phenylhydrazine (DPPH) radical were tested in vitro. Each derivative showed a distinct improvement in radical scavenging activity when compared to inulin. The hydroxyl-radical scavenging effect decreased in the following order: 3APIL > PIL > 3,4DAPIL > 4APIL > 2,3DAPIL > 2,6DAPIL > 2APIL. Amongst them, 3APIL revealed the most powerful scavenging effect on hydroxyl radicals, as well as DPPH radicals. At 1.6 mg/mL, it could completely eliminate hydroxyl radicals and could clear 65% of DPPH radicals. The results also showed that the steric hindrance effect and the substitute position of the amino group had an effect on the radical scavenging activity. In this paper, quaternary ammonium salts of chitosan bearing halogenated acetate, including N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan chloroacetate (TMCSC), N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan dichloroacetate (TMCSDC), N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan trichloroacetate (TMCSTC), and N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan trifluoroacetate (TMCSTF), were prepared via N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan iodide (TMCSI). The obtained chitosan derivatives were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR spectra, 13C NMR spectra, and elemental analysis. Their antifungal property against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumebrium Owen (F. oxysporum f. sp. cucumebrium Owen), Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea), and Phomopsis asparagi (P. asparagi) were evaluated by hyphal measurement method at concentrations ranging from 0.08 mg/mL to 0.8 mg/mL. Meanwhile, two common bacteria, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), were selected as the model Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria to evaluate the antibacterial property of the chitosan derivatives by agar well diffusion method. The results showed that TMCSC, TMCSDC, TMCSTC, and TMCSTF had better antifungal and antibacterial activities than chitosan and TMCSI. In particular, a rule showed that the inhibitory activity decreased in the order: TMCSTF > TMCSTC > TMCSDC > TMCSC > TMCSI > chitosan, which was consistent with the electron-withdrawing property of different halogenated acetate. Apparently, the quaternary ammonium salts of chitosan with stronger electron withdrawing ability possessed relatively greater antifungal and antibacterial activities. We successfully synthesized the water-soluble chitosan derivatives propane sulfonated chitosan (PSCS) and dipropane sulfonated chitosan (DPSCS) in this paper. These derivatives were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. Moreover, the antioxidant activity of the chitosan derivatives was evaluated by free radical scavenging ability (against DPPH-radical, hydroxyl-radical, and superoxide-radical) and ferric reducing power. Meanwhile, inhibitory effects against two fungi were also tested. Our results suggested antioxidant abilities and antifungal properties were in order of DPSCS > PSCS > CS, which were consistent with the number of propane sulfonated groups. The scavenging activity of DPSCS against superoxide-radical and DPPH-radical were 94.1% and 100% at 1.6 mg/mL, respectively. The inhibitory indices of DPSCS against P. asparagi and F. oxysporum were up to 82.2% and 94% at 1.0 mg/mL, respectively. Obviously, the number of propane sulfonated groups of chitosan derivatives not only contributes to antioxidant activity, but also to antifungal activity. Therefore, DPSCS with more propane sulfonated groups endowed with antioxidant and antifungal activity that can be used as a candidate material in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
