By using piezoelectric materials, it is possible to convert clean and renewable energy sources into electrical energy. In this paper, the effect on the piezoelectro-elastic response of piezoelectric-fiber-reinforced nanocomposites by adding silica nanoparticles into the polyimide matrix is investigated by a micromechanical method. First, the Ji and Mori–Tanaka models are used to calculate the properties of the nanoscale silica-filled polymer. The nanoparticle agglomeration and silica–polymer interphase are considered in the micromechanical modeling. Then, considering the filled polymer as the matrix and the piezoelectric fiber as the reinforcement, the Mori–Tanaka model is used to estimate the elastic and piezoelectric constants of the piezoelectric fibrous nanocomposites. It was found that adding silica nanoparticles into the polymer improves the elastic and piezoelectric properties of the piezoelectric fibrous nanocomposites. When the fiber volume fraction is 60%, the nanocomposite with the 3% silica-filled polyimide exhibits 39%, 31.8%, and 37% improvements in the transverse Young's modulus E T , transverse shear modulus G T L , and piezoelectric coefficient e 31 in comparison with the composite without nanoparticles. Furthermore, the piezoelectro-elastic properties such as E T , G T L , and e 31 can be improved as the nanoparticle diameter decreases. However, the elastic and piezoelectric constants of the piezoelectric fibrous nanocomposites decrease once the nanoparticles are agglomerated in the polymer matrix. A thick interphase with a high stiffness enhances the nanocomposite's piezoelectro-elastic performance. Polymeric hydrogels can be used as artificial replacement for lesioned cartilage. However, modulating the hydrogel formulation that mimics articular cartilage tissue with respect to mechanical and tribological properties has remained a challenge. This study encompasses the tribological evaluation of a silica nanoparticle (SNP) loaded bilayer nanocomposite hydrogel (NCH), synthesized using acrylamide, acrylic acid, and alginate via modulated free-radical polymerization. Multi-factor pin-on-plate sliding wear experiments were carried out with a steel ball counterface using a linear reciprocating tribometer. Tribological properties of NCHs with 0.6 wt% SNPs showed a significant improvement in the wear resistance of the lubricious layer and a low coefficient of friction (CoF). CoF of both non-reinforced hydrogel (NRH) and NCH at maximum contact pressure ranged from 0.006 to 0.008, which is in the order of the CoF of healthy articular cartilage. Interfacial surface energy was analysed according to Johnson, Kendall, and Robert's theory, and NCHs showed superior mechanical properties and surface energy compared to NRHs. Lubrication regimes' models were drawn based on the Stribeck chart parameters, and CoF results were highlighted in the elastoviscous transition regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sustainable antibacterial–antioxidant films were prepared using in situ graftings of silica nanoparticle (SNP) precursors with covalently attached bioactive agents benzoic acid (ba) or curcumin (cur) on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The modified PVA-SNP, PVA-SNP-ba and PVA-SNP-cur films were characterized using spectroscopic, physicochemical and microscopic methods. The prepared films showed excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activity, and increased hydrophobicity providing protection from undesired moisture. The PVA-SNP-ba films completely prevented the growth of the foodborne human pathogen Listeria innocua, whereas PVA-SNP-cur resulted in a 2.5 log reduction of this bacteria. The PVA-SNP-cur and PVA-SNP-ba films showed high antioxidant activity of 15.9 and 14.7 Mm/g TEAC, respectively. The described approach can serve as a generic platform for the formation of PVA-based packaging materials with tailor-made activity tuned by active substituents on silica precursors. The objectives of this study are to improve the thermal and mechanical properties of epoxy/fumed silica composite with different surface treatments of fumed silica. The addition of silica nanoparticles improved the thermal stability of the composite and slowed down the pyrolysis process. The crosslinking density and Tg of the epoxy/fumed silica composites increased because of the interfacial interaction between the PDMS-treated fumed silica particles and the epoxy matrix. The flexural strength of the epoxy nanocomposite was very high even at a low silica content because of the strong interactions between the PDMS-treated fillers and the epoxy matrix. These strong interfacial interactions originate from the attractive forces between the polymer and the filler. Therefore, the polymer nanocomposite containing the PDMS-treated fumed silica is shown to be sufficiently commercially promising. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Epoxy structural adhesives have strong adhesion, minimal shrinkage and high thermal and chemical resistance. However, despite these excellent properties, their high-energy impact resistance should be improved to satisfy the increasing demands of the automotive industry. For this reason, we used four types of silica nanoparticles with different surface groups, such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), hydroxyl, epoxy and amine groups, as toughening agents and examined their effect on the glass transition temperature (Tg), crosslinking density and phase separation of epoxy structural adhesives. High-energy impact resistance, mode I fracture toughness and lap shear strength were also measured to explain the effect of surface functional groups. Silica nanoparticles with reactive functional groups increased the mode I fracture toughness of epoxy structural adhesives without sacrificing the crosslinking density. Although the mode I fracture toughness of epoxy structural adhesives could not clearly show the effect of surface functional groups, the dynamic resistance to cleavage obtained by impact wedge-peel tests showed quite different values. At a 0.3 vol% content, epoxy-functionalized silica nanoparticles induced the highest value (40.2 N/mm) compared to PDMS (34.1 N/m), hydroxyl (34.9 N/mm), and amine (36.1 N/m). We showed the potential of poly(ethylene-co-propylene) (EPR)/silver metal/p-benzoquinone composite membranes for propylene/propane mixtures, i.e., a selectivity of 10 and a mixed gas permeance of 0.5 GPU (1 GPU = 1 × 10−6 cm3 (STP)/(cm2 s cmHg) in a previous study. In this study, we additionally found that the incorporation of fumed silica nanoparticles into EPR/silver metal/p-benzoquinone (p-BQ) composite membranes exhibited much higher permeance and selectivity for propylene/propane mixtures. The positive polarity of silver metal continuously increased with the increasing silica content up to the 0.1 weight ratio, as revealed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This increase in the polarity of silver metal was attributed to the enhanced interaction of p-BQ with the surface of Ag nanoparticles by the increased dispersion of p-BQ by fumed silica nanoparticles. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) also presented that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the membranes was almost invariant. Therefore, the improvement of the permeance and selectivity with the silica nanoparticles was attributable to the increased polarity of the silver metal rather than the structural change.
