A broad process of trade liberalization began in Mexico in 1985. This was strengthened by the coming into effect of the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1994. This article analyzes the impact on the labor market of the external opening and, in particular, the situation for labor by level of training, as well as inequalities in pay. For this purpose, based on various data sources for individuals and companies, a number of methodologies are used, ranging from the calculation and analysis of inequality indicators, estimating Mincerian functions for salaries, to regressions of indicators for remunerations and employment of skilled and unskilled workers. As a result it was found that the external opening increased wage iniquity, although this process was not linear and was also influenced by other factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
